2 Chainz Talks Skin Complexion Fixation & Scrutiny Of Lyrics In Hip Hop

(AllHipHop News) Def Jam recording artist 2 Chainz spoke with MTV’s Sway Calloway about some serious issues related to Hip Hop. The Georgia native addressed his choice to use dark-skinned models in his latest video for “Feds Watching” and the recent rash of apologies by rappers over lyrics some critics have considered offensive.

Chainz admits that “Feds Watching” drew concern from executives at the label and Pharrell Williams, who is featured on the track, about certain lyrics on the song.

“Pharrell brought it up, and then the label brought it up,” said 2 Chainz. “Basically I said the word prosecutor. It’s almost a cuss word. You almost can’t say it, because this is a government official.”

He also says there are other lyrics on his new album B.O.A.T.S. II: Me Time that he has had to question if they may be going too far. Particularly, one line where he says, “I blew myself up like a Unabomber.”

Chainz also makes the point that rappers have to constantly find a balance between their rights as an artist to free speech and possibly harming their connections to corporate interests with their controversial rhymes.

“One end, you want to talk about the first amendment, you want to talk about freedom of speech, but on the other end, everything is so delicate, you cannot say anything,” he added.

“When you’re just trying to be slightly creative and just try to use a metaphor in a different way that people can appreciate, maybe laugh about, it’s taken out of context the wrong way and you find yourself losing millions dollars out of the kind of deals that you have set-up.”

One area of free expression 2 Chainz has fully embraced is highlighting women of different complexions in his video. He says he purposely used dark skin women in the visuals for”Feds Watching.”

“We always get battered, us rappers, because we always talk about red girls, light-skinned girls,” said Chainz. “We’ve been brainwashed like little girls with baby dolls.”

Well dayum. 2chains sounded intelligent. This is the b.s. I’m talking bout. Ain’t nobody saying don’t make party songs but mix it up. Start giving some positive and inspirational too. Like k.r.s one said” many of you are educated open your mouth and speak…”

    • EDOGZ818

The chics were looking right in the video, catchy beat, etc, but dumb lyrics, and kinda shameful too, because 2 Chainz actually has some talent / skill.

      • eddieknucks

Exactly what I’m saying. Cool with sum cats who know him. Said the ninja eduacated and mad intelligent.

      • EDOGZ818

I believe it, in fact, it’s hard not to believe it, so is this proof that execs dumb down the music?

      • Eli Pinilla

they dumb down themselves on purpose. thats why i dont f*ck with these
dudes that try to play ignorant but are actually smart. chainz, wacka,
and plies. these dudes is the worst. smart enough to know what they
doin, but do it anyways to make money. then when people start lookin at
them like they dumb, they start tryin to talk all smart in interviews
and shit. but young duded dont know the difference and they act like the
stupid ngga in the song, not the smart ngga in the interviews…at
least dudes like the clipse and wu talked that street shit with

      • @Real_SirJamie

I don’t know about Waka… There is NO excuse for the way he acted on 106th and park when asked about school and voting. If that was “acting” then he needs an Oscar.

      • Eli Pinilla

lol homie aint dumb. he just act stupid. he knows exactly what hes doin….they all do.

      • @Real_SirJamie

I halfway agree with you, because as you stated in interviews he doesn’t sound stupid.

      • RapItUp

Waka used to be Gucci’s shooter.. I mean, he can have COMMON SENSE, but I’m w/ LAMK., I wouldn’t go as far as to call him smart.. nigga is still a big rich idiot.. lol

      • eddieknucks

Soon as the check cut them ninjas like “c.a.t spells dog, duhhh.” Modern day step and fetch it.

    • Dwayne Nvo

he aint trying to sound smart, hes smart for real. he went to college but in his songs he tries to sound dumb cause aint nobody gonna buy his shit if he sounds smart.

      • junj03

He went to ASU on a scholarship,

Allot of dumb people go to College to play sports on

If the high school/college need the player then they will do
whatever it takes to get him & keep his grades in “good” standings.

As for him, he can’t even put words correctly to make a
        proper sentence.

When they interviewed him on Hot97 it was worst. Its like,
they have to help him complete sentences & ideas.

you right my homeboy went to FAMU and couldn’t read. but could run like the wind. unfortunately he cant rap, he is now doing a bid in kentucky for drug trafficing. true story. and he has a degree. so i co-sing wit junj03

      • RapItUp

It was worsT?? Lol well if that isn’t the kettle calling the pot black..

  2. MrNoName2K

in a way i see where he’s comin from..but on the flip side, he aint said nothing that hasn’t been addressed before..

    • Matt Swan

We’ll see in his next video when every redbone, latina and PAWG with fake a$$ body parts from Miami is in there.. And he can’t explain away the dumb ish like the Emmitt Till verse or the molly verse from Fawse. Some things you think, other things you actually say. Some rappers haven’t realized that.

  3. BibatheDiva

I love that he used a lot of dark and brown skinned women in the Feds Watching video, I hope that catches on.

  4. Dassine Lamb

I like 2 Chainz but the dumbing down has got to stop “I wish a nigga would like a kitchen cabinet ” (he means “wood”),that is not a metaphor those are 2 different words with entirely different meanings . In the ” Feds watching song he says “I’m raw talking California Rolls” well California Rolls are not raw Sushi !!! SMDH cause kids hear this and run with it !!! Stop It

    • RapItUp

I’m in Cali, and yeaaa, the California roll/raw thing wasn’t cool. But c’mon though, the wood/would kitchen cabinet thing, that was funny, was it not?? That song wasn’t meant to be really thought provoking or carry a profound message.. It fit the bill. And if kids are that young to be impressionable enough to confuse wood & would, then they are WAAAY TOO YOUNG to be listening to 2 Chainz trappin’/ass clappin’/money stackin music

      • Dassine Lamb

I am in Antioch born and raised in Oakland , daughter of Chief of Staff BPP , so yeah WE been here also . I don’t agree with the song being a song made for funnies here’s the thing , I agree with monitoring what your children listen to and see but C’Mon Son if you don’t think or understand that peer pressure is EVERYTHING and when your parents weren’t around I’m sure we all have done things we know we should not even entertain !!! So I believe it is our responsibility to make sure we stay informing and educated our youth not try and dumb down the next generation it scares me these people will be in control when I’m old !!! Feel me

      • RapItUp

I too, worry about the next generation.. I almost feel like it’s too late for them, and big corporations/media has that shit on lock.. Look at this website for instance. What it used to be, and what it is now.. I know a thing or two about peer pressure, lemme tell you.. Lol! We just gotta get our youth back in those books and show them (by example?) that killing each other and going to jail ain’t cool.. It just ain’t where its at!

  5. ZUBU

The video was nice visually, yet it lacked any intellectual content. Having said that I watched the interview and the brotha is certainly intelligent, as others have commented maybe its the label execs who have rappers dumbing down the music. Maybe the rappers are doing it just to cash in, whatever it is it doesn’t work for me. Reasons why I don’t even listen to most of these new dudes.

  6. Arrie Mental Woodard

a few years ago when he was apart of DTP i read in an interview that he has a college degree. Alot of rappers are intelligent, some are actually teachers who chose to rap. This is a business, you do what sells. and he found his lane. Stop hating and let him eat……

  7. Rapist on BAIL

Ugly ass hoes in the video bro! Just play it safe next time and use butter pecan Latinas or even pawgs! Ya know, some real eye candy!

Hot song, but worst video ever!

  8. brotha_man

I always thought pam from “martin” was dope…hell she still dope. nobody disrespects black women more the A.S.A.P. watching their/his videos is like watching a episode of 90210

  9. Andy

He didn’t sound that intelligent. And there is no excuse for some of the verses he has put out. Granted, he probably isn’t as stupid as I originally thought he was, but I wouldn’t call him smart or intellectual.
