Ab-Soul Addresses Leaving Black Hippy, Kendrick’s Success + More (VIDEO)

(AllHipHop News) Ab-Soul has no qualms with speaking about his groupmate/”brother” Kendrick Lamar but he does want to clear up the group’s perception. In a recent interview with Montreality, the Control System rapper addressed his threat of leaving Black Hippy, what is holding a Black Hippy album back and more.

While Soul Brother #2 says in the interview that a Black Hippy album will happen “when that check is right”, he also takes time out to address his previous tweet threatening to leave Black Hippy:

I don’t want people to think Kendrick is Lil’ Wayne or 50 Cent. It’s not G-Unit. My boss is not Kendrick. Kendrick didn’t sign me. Kendrick didnt add me to his group. This was a collective long before there was Black Hippy.

Soul says his untitled upcoming project is a “diverse body of work” that will be arriving soon, however gave no concrete details on the project. He also gives a succinct reaction to Kendrick Lamar appearing on the song “Love Game” from Eminem’s upcoming album The Marshall Mathers LP 2:

Eminem would be foolish not to have him on his album

Check out the full interview where Ab-Soul speaks on wanting to get “Reasonable Doubt Jay Z” on a song, the realest lyrics he ever wrote and more:

  • Homegrown Chicks

Black Hippy as individual artists are still building their overall brand to popularity! I don’t know if it’s wise to be making demands at this time. Let’s be honest, Kendrick IS THE BLACK HIPPY brand at this point! Jay Rock is probably the most well known, then SchoolBoyQ (and the ladder of the two is a recent occurence).

    • Dubz

I get what Soul saying, I don’t understand why fans have to associate Kendrick as the “leader” of the group…he is the best and well known out of the group but that doesn’t mean he the “leader” and I think that is all Ab-Soul is saying.

      • Homegrown Chicks

“a Black Hippy album will happen when that check is right”….somebody come get ya boy, he’s feeling himself a little too much!

      • Dubz

I don’t blame him, nobody is trying to get screwed out of money.

      • ItGoesDownINtheDM

you gotta think about it … none of them dudes is buzzing except for schoolboy and kendrick .. and kendrick now has a retail album that went platinum to hang too … which means when they do try to structure a deal im sure all the money is going towards Kendrick … and knowing this industry !!!!! its a good chance they trying to get soul on that joint @ a for promo rate !!!!!! the biz is grimey and chances are thats why he said that

    • PhilTheGreat

Ha I think it was Kendrick who even said that Ab-Soul really got them all musically assorted, cuz his mom had the record store or something like that??? Someone correct me if I’m wrong, my memory is a bit fuzzy on that interview.

      • ItGoesDownINtheDM

im not to sure about that but his peeps def owns a lengendary record store out there tho

    • Schooly B

Latter the word you were searching for is latter.

      • Homegrown Chicks

I was wondering about that…lol. Too lazy to spell-check, good lookin out! lol

    • Guillaume Pilon

jay rock was know before kendrick

but yeah ur right kendrick is the big name

    • ItGoesDownINtheDM

if anyone should have a gripe def should be Jay rock cause he was first up to bat … got kind of a mediocre response …. then kendrick came thru and tore the roof off this mother lol …… but imo its simply cause kendrick is different … aint nothing jay rock talking about that 100000000000 other mceez aint already said same with schoolboy ….. Soul def has a potential once again cause hes different … new ish fresh exclusive … and hes def my fave out the collective …..

  • Reblogged this on Earz2DaStreetz.

  • RapItUp

I can understand this guys frustration, but he seriously needs to stfu.. If it weren’t for the internet bloggers such as ourselves, nobody would know who the hell this guy was unless his name was DIRECTLY NEXT to Kendrick’s.. He should just shut his black-lipped trap, keep penning those thought provoking hits, and wait until he’s up to bat

    • I definitely found out about him through Schoolboy Q. Druggys With Hoes Again. And I’ve heard of almost all the other members before I heard of Kendrick. Why should he shut up for being reduced to just a band member when they all had a distinct fan base before they started individually blowing up?

      • RapItUp

Not as distinct as he would like to think, according to the magazine cover. “Kendrick Lamar and Black Hippy” collective. I don’t agree with them doing that, but the magazine has less than a second to capture the reader. Who do you think is going to get noticed? Ab-Soul? Or Kendrick Lamar? Black Hippy? XXL was right on point in terms of marketing, and it will bring shine to the rest of the group. I’m just saying, he should wait until he has some more buzz to start popping off at the lip like he is now, otherwise he will Azalea Banks himself w/ that attitude

  • cdj313
