Hip-Hop Rumors: Was There A Mass Firing After Lady GaGa Flopped?

Lady Gaga's "Applause"

Lady GaGa did her thing over the weekend – she was funny! But, her album ArtPop has not managed quite so well. The album was set to sell roughly 260k in the first week, which is actually pretty good by most standards. But Gaga is not most artists. Her first album sold over a million in the first week. As I recall, they did a lot of pricing trickery to get that to happen, like selling it for .99 cents in some digital spots. Now, here is where the firing goes. Interscope devoted $25 million into the promotion of this album and will not come close to breaking even. They haven’t put this much into an album since Michael Jackson! There are even reports that own up to payola being transacted to push her single “Applause.” About 50 people are reportedly going to be jobless as we move into the holiday season.

  • John Q. Public

$25 mill to promote an album doesn’t seem right… Also lady GAGA is not HIPHOP

    • Inmadopicouroz✓QUEENSᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

      I concur. AHH don’t know shi&!

    • Myleage

honestly i didnt know she was dropping an album. granted i dont check for her, but i do not know one single from her album. so where did that 25 mill go to?

      • Charter

        Someone’s pocket.

    • Stay Phokus

she’s not hip hop, but it effects interscope records where there is a lot of hip hop artists, some of the people that maybe fired might come from the hiphop side

on top of that they are willing to shell out 25 mil for promotion for a crazy white girl, but would never do that for a hip hop artist

      • Guest

        50 gonna be pissed

  • 1hiphophiphop

She been garbage. Fake ass Madonna

    • brotha_man

but nikki a fake ass gaga

  • Celz

Interscope does firings before Christmas every year..

    • soyhiphop

For a janitor at interscope you sure do know alot!

      • Celz

Lame comment from a lame nicca.. Hollywood is a small circle it takes little to no effort hit up industry events.

      • Inmadopicouroz✓QUEENSᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

he a wet back from Staten Island where his punk daddy got punked by the Wu back in the day. WHat he don’t know that Rae smashed his mom back in the day

      • Celz

Now to make MONEY from hitting up those events is a different story…

  • Charter

$25 Million??? Where? Spend as much as you want….make sue the music is good and people hear it! Other than Applause, there were no other videos or $25 million of visibility shown! If anyone should be fired, it’s the cats at the top that signed off on $25 Million in this day in age!

  • TimeWillTellu1

She had a new album out? That 25 million can feed so many families.

  • iamwhoiam

    Lady Gaga huh???

  • What the f**k does this have to do with hip hop?

  • $18592567

ROB FUSARI is the reason she flopped… He did the hot records on her first project then their business got messed up with her new success. Dude gave her name and swag… This is what happens when Pinocchio get too big 4 Geppetto.

  • Jared

Whoever wrote this “rumor” needs to be fired. Her first album dropped in 2008 and sold 24,000 copies first week. Do the research. You didn’t even know lady Faga in 2008…

  • PL

Lady Gaga…Hip-Hop…How is this hip-hop related?..where’s the connection?

    • COOCHaDAMus

PL hip hop spans past just being a genre or even a culture it has completely crossed over. i feel the same way about myle cyrus (spelling i know is off) nawmeen homie

      • anemia716

Yes, but how does lady gaga represent hip hop? She is not a part of the hip hop culture by any stretch. Nice try.

      • sesa

I agree with you that her music is not hip hop, but Interscope reps her (label that sells more hip hop albums than any other label, and label that could be running this site), and Akon was the one pushing her to the mainstream originally.

  • don king

25 million n this seemed 2 b the weakest promoted album so far. shes just played out. its over 4 her.

  • Super_Hero

Lady Gaga audience has gotten smaller. She alienated lot of her fanbase by only targeting the pop gay crowd.

    • anemia716

Ok, I’m pretty sure her fanbase has always been comprised of gays and boppers. She’s been targeting the same crowd since day one.

      • Weedras

nah not really she had other folks checking for her on till she hit them with that Born this Way album… but her core has always been the gay pop crowd,,,

  • Dead Mosby

Having a mass amount of hype is one thing, maintaining that hype is a whole new battle. I feel like artists get lazy and have expectations that the momentum will just naturally continue regardless of whether or not they are still striving to perfect their craft.

  • BillyBobJohn

Interscope was already in a bad way after they had a reshuffle and new people came in so this is just gonna make things ten times worse. def jams has the same problem. keep pushing albums back and albums flopping.

  • Does this mean Street King Immortal will never get released since Interscope lost all this money, 50 will be mad as hell about these events.

  • soyhiphop

How do artist sell records in 2013? first off who in the f*ck uses cds? maybe a 47 year old man in bangledesh riding a elephant while listening to you cant touch this on his sony disc man..but i dont know any one who buys music on itunes lol why? I get your sh!t for free!

    • DeeJay Babe

I still sell CDs physically through a mixtape distro company and on MixtapeDJs dot net.. yes, there’s still a market for CDs, not as big as it was.. but they are not extinct.

    • brotha_man

i have not had a music cd in a long time….the same with DVDs unless my and my girl hit a redbox

    • Inmadopicouroz✓QUEENSᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

u disrespect the culture FU(K Nicca. Real NY niccas don’t see you unless you try to sneak them cause U PUZZZZZY! I understand not buying CDs but you still have to support the artist u rep. whether iTunes or concerts etc. stop being a FU(k nicca before I slap ur baby momma and kick both u bit(hes out here!

    • J. Jordan

Definitely still a market for physical cds, it’s much smaller than 10 or 15 years ago but still there. There are still people who don’t do illegal downloads and actually buy digital (believe it or not), still die-hard fans who buy ALL of their favorite artists stuff (think Jay-Z, Eminem etc), there’s collectors (like myself, 200+ cds in multiple genres, dope collection) plus people who aren’t computer-savy like older folks, people in smaller cities/towns, young tween-boppers, people without a good pc or laptop…ALL these people still buy cds

  • Truth Powell

Lady Gaga’s ugly ass is not hiphop and should not be a news story here. These fake new artists are all hype. They have no longevity. Anyone who was a “fan” a few years ago moved on to the next new thing.

  • Guest

this site is interscope funded. thats why all you hear about is game, eminem, 50 cent, and mainly interscope artists. eminem does snl, so does gaga a week later. This site brings up some other labels every now and then but interscope is pop hip hop. Rap a lot is a real label, no gagas over there.

    • Rap a Lot has traditionally been to hardcore for the mainstream, so that doesn’t count!

Everyone knows the GB, but without BDS spins.

nobody here checking for GAGA…I thought this was a hip hop site?

    • RapItUp

You gotta take that up w/ “The Inside Man”.. or wait, could be “Friday Foster”… oo no, even the reliable “illseed” (whose moniker is probably used by many posting ‘journalists’ on this site abroad) this site has gone straight to the crapper

    • MrsOno

But you clicked on the article. You checked for her…lol!

i clicked on it to type this!!! I’m sorry but you get DONKEY of the DAY!!!

  • So why are ymcmb the only artists acting like it’s so easy to sell a record these days…Everyone has it hard, the struggle is real…lol

    • atle fjeldstad

It`s easy to sell records when you buy most of them yourself 😉

  • Immortal

I guess even taking all her clothes off at shows wasn’t enough to kids to buy her album. I guess those “monsters” of her’s are finally growing up and her shock value is going down. Sad for those that are loosing those jobs right before the holidays, but WTF were they thinking in this economy and fickle music market to put that much out there on one album?

  • Mark Olford

sounds like the making of an American Greed episode….somebody get Stacy on the line…

fruk this she devil, glad she flopped.

  • s0rethumb

That Liz Minnelli/Madonna/Streisand gimmick has reached its expiration date. Next!

  • LexxBrown

I really think those days are gone when you spend that much to push an artist. but dam

  • johnblacksad

Where all them mf’s that used to call her the next Michael Jackson at?

    Horrible bet!

  • richard_b_hard

Maybe if she releases a sextape with R Kelley pissing on her,her sales might go up!

One white person at a time buddy..It was Eminem’s turn she should of waited

  • ItGoesDownINtheDM

her album tanked and shes taking a few people with her lol

  • ItGoesDownINtheDM

but why invest 25 million into any music project ?? its movies that get made for less than that lol …. someone def needs to get fired on that one …. if you spend 25mill what were you expecting to make lol ????? gaga is big but she aint that big lol … the only artist i can see taking major risk like that on are folks like jayz justin timberlake or eminem … cause no matter what they drop even the doo doo thier ish seems to still sell ……

  • atlantahiphopshop

    Cavewoman gone wild!

  • So 50 ppl are losing theyre job because no one is interested in her music…well not enough ppl rather cause 260k went out and got it first week which isnt bad especially when she really didnt have a big hit or a hit period coming off of this album or recently, that i know of at least.

  • meanygreene

now she know how underground artists feels

  • baller187

she better get back up cuz it can be over real quick

  • churchpreach

    oh shit lol

  • drac215

25 million? Doesn’t make sense at all!!! You must have your numbers wrong because even a small time business person would know the music industry cant turn a profit on a 25 million dollar investment. Like someone said even the film industry are making movies for 25 million or under to maybe make a profit!!! There’s not one artist today that a record company would invest 25 million on(eminem, jayz, beyonce, katy perry,…),even they(record labels) are not worth that much!!!

    • Legendary Trolly

Yea they can. Gaga probably gets a dollar for each album she sales. If she goes platinum she gets a million bucks. The label gets about 9 dollars for each album she sales. The album sales about 10 bucks a pop, so the lable will get 9 million if she goes platinum. If they expect her to sell 3 million then they would have got the profit.

      • drac215

So she would have to sell about 30 million albums to make a 5 million dollar profit? Sounds risky

      • Legendary Trolly

Yea but they probably expected her to sell about 10 million copies anyway. And also some stores will sell a deluxe edition for about 20 bucks, so then the money would be doubled. Of course Im no expert on the music game lol
