Pop Singer Lorde Calls Drake & Nicki Minaj's Music "Irrelevant"

(AllHipHop News) Rising New Zealand pop star Lorde broke out in the United States this year with her number one single “Royals.” At just sixteen she became the youngest artist to reach the top spot on the Billboard chart since former teen sensation Tiffany accomplished that feat in 1987.

While the singer-songwriter has managed to attract the ears of young listeners across the nation she apparently does not get why some of her musical peers have been as successful. Speaking with interviewmagazine.com, Lorde mentioned a few other entertainers, including two YMCMB rappers, that she feels creates music that does not relate to most people’s lives.

“Around the middle of last year I started listening to a lot of rap, like Nicki Minaj and Drake, as well as pop singers like Lana Del Rey,” said Lorde. “They all sing about such opulence, stuff that just didn’t relate to me—or anyone that I knew. I began thinking, ‘How are we listening to this? It’s completely irrelevant’.”

i see what you did with that headline try start a beef lol, but she saying that her and people she know don’t relate to them and irrelevant to and i understand why would 16 yrs old white girl from new Zealand relate to rapper from Canada and new york

    • johnblacksad

false media, we don’t need it, do we?

    • Blazer

Why would any 16yr old from anywhere relate to that garbage.

btw the bulk YMCMB listeners would be between the age of 12-16 i’d say.

      • Me

Im 19 and I listened to YMCMB and Lorde!!

  • Thenatural503

Wait since when did rappers or whatever you wanna call Drake and Nicki rap about anything that’s relevant to 99% of anyone who listens to their music?

    • YouDontKnow

Oh, shut up. She never called them irrelevant in a way of fame or questioning their skills. She meant that their songs are practically irrelevant to many of our lives. Reading is fundamental, so learn to read this yellow journalism you call “news.” Speaking of yellow journalism, why would you make such a bummy headline just to get some views? Are there not enough viewers?

    • atle fjeldstad

Ain`t that the truth! Unless you can do it all, like me 😉

  • Sasha

    Who is she?

    • arrdeesss

Try reading the article next time. It kinda explained who she is.

      • Sasha

No, WHO is she? Think about that statement, before you reply to me.

      • arrdeesss

Oh ok, good one guy. That’s pretty damn original.

  • AlbertoRipRon

Didn’t even expect shorty to be cute

  • Kev

Honestly, those who say Nicki is trash are just judging her based off of her mainstream shit (Super Bass, Starships, Stupid Hoe, etc. etc.) I’m telling you people, she has quality music, it’s just the way the industry is, the “stupid/unmeaningful” songs get blown up more. Same with Drake (and many other artists). Lorde is a great artist and her comment was completely different than what the media is trying to proclaim. Everyone is entitled to their opinion however she can’t “diss” other musicians. There are different types of music and there are different types of fan bases and I think everyone should just respect that.

    • Dontoure Smith

      …… HA! GAAAYYYYEEEEEE

      • Kev

^ Real mature. You’re like 40 years old and you’re still saying “Ha! Gaaayyyyeeeee?” Go back to 6th grade.

      • Dontoure Smith

You must know me personally. Probably not cause I’m no where near 40 bruh. And I can’t go back to 6th grade. Time machines don’t exist. Maybe you should go back to the drawing board and come up with more creative insults. Grown men sitting on the Internet defending Nicki Minaj music. That’s childish lol

      • atle fjeldstad

        chuuch

      • arrdeesss

On that pic you look like 39 homie. That’s probably where he get it from.

      • Dontoure Smith

Nowhere near 39 either. You both lose

      • arrdeesss

Wasn’t trying to win, I was just saying.

      • arrdeesss

Damn, then maybe you should act as old as you look then, cornball azz ni99a..

      • Dontoure Smith

  • LB Tross

Shit journalism at its best !!!!! lazy arse reporting…. cut 2 pieces of a quote and make a diss statement.. you my friend owe the girl and apology….She holds Drake and Nicki in awe.. DO YOUR HOMEWORK !

    • bwellerr

WTF are you talking about?! The link to the interview is right in the article! THERE IS NO CUTTING. It’s a direct quote. The fucked up journalism is in the title of this article. Lorde was saying the content of Drake’s & Nick’s songs are irrelevant to the listeners; she wasn’t calling them irrelevant.

  • remy730

She has a problem with pop rap. Just like most of us do. The bitch aint breaking no new ground. This chick music don’t relate to me or anyone I know. She a pop artist and need to stay in her lane. Next year she’ll be someone that we used to know like Gotye.

This bitch talking like she “got” 6 hits in America

    • atle fjeldstad

I didn`t even understand that sentence..

      • Havoc Wreaka III

That’s because you’re white…. Clearly I forgot to put “got” in the sentence but you’re a honky so you suck at life

      • Pia Razon

Mr. HavocWreaka III, a sure sign that a man feels confident in his own skin is the ability to communicate thoughts and ideas without name calling. Your hate filled responses don’t make those of us who disagree with you look bad, they make you look bad and unfortunately, they reflect poorly on your parents as well. If you’re so bold, post your real photo!

      • Havoc Wreaka III

        Honky talk

      • Immortal

You were doing good in your retort until you mention using his real photo. His “real” photo means nothing, and proves nothing. I agree that to make a point through name calling or degradation of another invalidates your whole point. @disqus_VPOAHN0Qlf:disqus blacks are our own worst enemy. While racism does exist and will exist in some form or another in the fabric of society, giving it a white label is wrong. Fact check: Blacks sold other blacks as slaves during the slave trade. For every so called “kingpin” in the black drug world there has been there has been a black man that snitched once he realized that he was going to get serious Federal time. I didn’t say state. Blacks complain about the drugs in our community but the thing is, WE bring them in, WE sell them to our own, and WE freely commit modern genocide to our own for the sake of a dollar. Then we have the arrogance to try to explain it away as if I didn’t do it someone else would. WE support fake ass rappers who talk about selling drugs, killing, and doing time, knowing full well that most of them have barely seen the inside of a courtroom. Until the black man is his brothers keeper, then we are truly his executioner.

      • SBRon

Yes, I get that blacks sold other blacks, etc…etc… (A large part of it was known as the “Triangle Trade”. Slaves were dropped off in the sugar plantations in the Caribbean – leading to rum distilleries in the North – said rum was “currency” for more slaves in Africa). We’ve been “poppin’ bottles” for a looong time!!!
Now, FLASH FORWARD to the 21st Century: I don’t view black-on-black destruction as racism…I call it self-hatred due to Plantation Psychosis (aka mental and psychological slavery). We’ve been treated as, and told we’re subhuman and inferior & unfortunately, it’s engrained in far too many of us!!!

As far as I’m concerned, the “white label” of racism will forever remain, due to the fact THEY instituted it in EVERY facet of American life from education, politics, sports & entertainment, down to “shop n’ frisk”!! So when a white boy on here gets his Hilfiger boxer briefs in a bundle, screaming racism after reading the word honky….I find that laughable!!!

If Havoc Wreaka III really is racist towards whites, how exactly can he act on his racism? Can he systematically oppress them? Sure, he could take up the “Knockout Game”, ending with life in prison or death by police!! Therefore, the issue of Black Racism towards Whites is basically a non-starter for me…I don’t practice it, but history makes it understandable!!

      • Immortal

Good Points and a true result.

      • Conrad Harvey

        Aww how cute.. racism.

      • SBRon

Listen Conrad, you can cut that “racism” shit out right now…
Although I admit, “honky” is a bit dated!! Dude probably archived every episode of “The Jeffersons” in syndication or some shit! But, that’s beside the point…REAL RACISM is ingrained in the very fabric of this society, perpetrated by WHITE people against people of color, especially blacks!! It seems to be the trend for those of your ilk to loosely throw out the “R word” these days…

YOU have NEVER in your life experienced REAL RACISM!! Maybe you got beat down, or your girl was dicked down by a brotha, but were you denied housing by a person of color, idiot? I’m using that word since you like to use it…As though #1 worldwide proves a damn thing?!? Just means a significant number of white folk on every continent bought the shit…

And it’s “shit music” because YOU are not feelin’ it?!? WhoTF are you? Lastly, I’m a business owner, so if I decided to hire a person of color instead of you, I guess that would be racism, too, right? Or could it be I have the ability to see inside people, so I might discover your sense of entitlement, where whites think every job is theirs? “They’re takin’ OUR jobs!”

      • Havoc Wreaka III

        I’m a racist… honky

Word. I won’t give Drake or Niki even one more play on Youtube! I got no time for the one percent unless it’s revo time.

  • AmericaFalling

She’s right, but Drake does relate to his audience though but I agree with those others mentioned. Nicki Minaj has no place in civilized society, nevermind pop culture. and Lana Del Rey is one depressing ass chick, I feel like jumping from the Empire State Building when listening to her music.

    • bwellerr

I might be wrong, but I think the song she did with asap rocky was less depressing than her usual style.

  • queen bee

But she LOVES Nicki??? and she said that shes “an important female in pop” & “ffing slays” and also said the Drake record is so good, like stop twisting her words, its like everyone wants to make her look bad

    She’s correct.

    • Rayquan Rogers

      in your opinion

      • Conrad Harvey

Most people’s opinions on earth is that they want to eat tomorrow. The fact that a few spoiled assholes can buy the equivalent of a lifetimes supply of food for their whole family with one jewelry purchase, then get paid to brag about it, may be one of the most relevant injustices in our world. But the fact that the music itself is irrelevant is a matter of object truth. Modern Rap (or Hip Pop) is trash. I’m sure its very relevant to the people who get paid from it though. Hip Hop will never die. The shit music is fad, the greed is here to stay.

      • Rayquan Rogers

        Seems legit. But still.

    • Havoc Wreaka III

I agree with her, but for this message to come from someone who’s so new to the business is unsettling. You don’t make it big by putting down people who are more successful than you are.
