DJ Quik Planning To Give “1989 DJ Quik” On 9th Studio Album (VIDEO)

(AllHipHop News) 25 years and counting DJ Quik has been the architect for countless of West Coast classics. In an interview on The Arsenio Hall Show, Quik explains how 19 year old DJ Quik will help his upcoming album.

DJ Quik’s debut album Quik Is The Name was released on Profile Records in 1991 and according to Quik, the “youthful and naive” Quik that appeared in that seminal debut will return in his upcoming ninth studio album:

I’m channeling DJ Quik from 1989. I’m sampling my old shit and thinking like the old DJ Quik from 1989. I’m biting me from then. I won’t be impressed until I sound as youthful and naive as I used to.

Back in August, L.A. Weekly named Quik the greatest L.A. producer of all time. Even after over two decades and hundreds of produced records, the West Coast production legend still believes he is unworthy of such a “lofty honor”:

Somebody else deserves that title. I don’t think I’ve done enough to deserve that title. I mean, I’ve produced a bunch of records, but come on, man. Dr. Dre obviously did so much. Then there’s DJ Muggs. Battlecat. Battlecat helped me get into the business with drum sounds and taught me how to program. So much a better DJ than I am. But me? I try to look back and say ‘what did I do?’ You know what? I’m going to have to accept it at some point, but it’s such a lofty, lofty honor. It’s too big for my skinny body. I don’t know if I’m ready for that yet.

Don’t you mean 1989 DJ Quik realness?
As for Quik personally, y’all already know what I’d def do……….

  • fasho

I’ve always said Quik and Warren G were better producers than Dr. Dre. No diss but musically and production wise, they were better. Dre had bigger albums and of course sold millions but from a music perspective, I definitely co-sign that.

    • yahoodikilla

Quik is a legend no doubt but to me Jonny J was a better producer. You are right about warren g an quik bein better than dre, so was sam sneed.

      • andone

R.I.P Jonny J… shout out to daz, muggs and alchemist!

      • bigdoe6

Johnny J was a beast. Gotta co-sign that one.

  • YungKizz

dj quik is a legend much respect to him

  • i’mreloaded!

Quik is nice as hell wit the production, but umma have to give it to Daz.

  • cromthelaughinggod7

Daz produce the entire Doggy Style album. Then dre paid him to have the credits of producer on it. I will put Daz in one of top LA producers. Dre doesn’t deserve credit only for Chronic the original and 2001.

    • yahoodikilla

I thought dre produced shiznit and G’z an hustlas? an a few others??

    • Jonathan Bacher

Im sure you have the agreement they supposedly signed, right ?

    • John Q. Public

Buuuuuullllshit…. repeating the same made up sh*t over and over isn’t gunna make it true

      • Thomas Smith

Sorry DAZ didn’t produce the whole doggystyle LP…….

      • cromthelaughinggod7

Never repeated it over and over. WTF are you smoking. You got me mixed up with someone else. Niggas got personal investment in his shit. Dre is dope but that shit happens.

    • Vinsanity

Next you goin say Daz produced 100 miles and runnin or Livin like Hustlers.

      • cromthelaughinggod7

Never said that but Dre didn’t do all has he claimed. A lot of producers do that. It is nothing to catch feelings over homie! Smoke something aight fall back!

      • Vinsanity

Keep dik riding Daz bro. Ha Ha

      • C.Berry Latina and PROUD

nigga daz is a legend… he made all the bangers during the death row era. you trippin

I understand whats going on here but its not going to work. Quiks been in the game too long and now trying to start over again after doing it all. This is the new trend right now from rappers of my generation still trying to hang in. Snoop knows you cant rap for ever so he trying something that might keep him around longer. Maybe DJ Quik should learn to play an instrument if he wants longevity, start a band kind of like Kokane was trying to do. Quik should find a young cat still in High School and pen and produce all his shit create a following and showcase him as his star talent on his own label. That way Quik can still make music, just through other artist. Dont get it twisted, got mad respect for Quik and a fan but rapping at 50 isnt cool. Cant do it for ever…. I know Quik isnt 50 but you get what im saying with all these rappers getting there….Time to do something else or at least start thinking about it.

    • John Q. Public

on a side note… last night somebody told me E40 was 47, he jus dropped a triple cd today. He gotta be the oldest “relevant” rapper in the game

    • C. Black

I don’t know fam. I’m still trying to figure out whats the negatives associated with spittin at an older age? If the culture is in ya blood, its just in ya blood. Either behind the scenes producing or still spittin, matters not. If I’m not mistaken, any other music genre can do it, why not ours? Shiiiit, KRS still making albums, Too Short still rockin, and a gang of others. As long as their material remains relevant, rock that shit, flat out.

      • Vinsanity

Ill tell you why and i appreciate your opinion but kids are the ones who buy the albums, kids are the ones that go to shows, kids are the ones listening to the radio all day, watching music videos, Adults such as my self have our own children and family and lives to worry about than to follow these artist. So kids are the ones that the Labels are targeting in rap and in pop. Ask yourself whys he trying to be 1989 again?

      • Huh, so I will face death after I become 40?

      • Pierre Elliott

        WOW YOU ARE BRAIN WASHED.

      • Vinsanity

When a 43 year old man (yup Quiks old he got babies who got babies) says
hes going to channel his 19 year old self and be naive and stupid again
we call it a…..Mid Life Crisis. Get mad if you want but true is true

    • I get it that Hip-Hop is a young man’s game, but exactly why is that? maybe because the message behind most rap content is juvenile (My theory)? As far as I’m concerned rapping at 50 is cool as long as the content is as mature as you or, or should be. I’m in my early 30’s so I don’t want to be listening to High School rap all the time, so am I as a fan too old to LISTEN like older rappers are too old to rap? Had to through my tangent in there based on that “rapping at 50 isn’t cool” comment.

      • Vinsanity

B.B king, Willie nelson etc.. will be performing untill they die with sold out shows while rappers from our time will be forced into retirement is my point. Rapping at 50? whos coming to your show? its not a good look and its pitiful. Im 30 myself and when im in L.A area all i listen to is Kay Day which is identical to whats on my i pod which is all i usually listen to. Also that whole style is over, Deathrow today would not work. What im saying is the kids today and age dont care about this, which who is ultimately the reason why artist either succeed or fail. Adults such as myself have too much going on with kids, work, marriage, bills…etc to follow artist as if im a kid again. I do value your opinion though. Kids are the ones who go to shows and buy the cds or itunes and are the ones who listen to the radio all day and the ones who watch music videos. Kids are the ones labels market to in hip hop and pop. Whos Quik making the cd for? Who will buy it? Some cats our age but not enough to make it worth putting out. Peace. Ask yourself whys he trying to be 1989 again?

      • Pierre Elliott

DUDE YOU NEED TO SIT DOWN. I WORKED IN THE BIZ WORLD FOR MANY YEARS UNTIL I SAID IM GONNA MAKE MUSIC—–THE WORDS YOU ARE SAYING TO THESE BROTHERS ARE THAT OF DEFEAT.

IM 40 DOGS–I LOOK 27 YEARS OLD WITHOUT TRYING AND I REALIZED YOU HAVE TO LIVE FOR YOU. AND IF IM 50 AND PEOPLE ARE COMING TO CHECK ME—-THEN IM ALL FOR IT…..

ITS PEOPLE LIKE YOU WHO ALREADY GAVE UP.
        YOURE A CONSUMER—NOT A CREATOR, SO TAKE IT BACK A TASE…

AND IF PEOPLE LET AGE STOP THEM—-HALF OF US WOULDNT EVEN BE HERE, ALIVE OR EVEN BEING ABLE TO TEXT DATA ACROSS CYBER SPACE IF YOU LET THAT ATTITUDE GET OUT….

THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU JUST SAID TO THESE *POSITIVE*
        BROTHAS–YOU SOUND NEGATIVE.

IM BE RAPPIN TILL IM MUTHA FCUKIN 60

      • Vinsanity

No, you sound negative. Attacking me and shit. Youre also in denial bro, there comes a time when you have to move on from one stage of your career to the next. Quik didnt stay a Dj forever he became a rapper and producer then did everything possible in his field now due to his age and the fans today theres little connection. Thats how it goes in hip hop. Whodini ant selling out shows or putting out relevant albums are they? They have to cancel shows all the time these days when Its a throwback concert with rappers from our time due to poor ticket sales…just this year alone look it up….. P.S All caps doesnt help you get your point across it tells us what kind of an ass you really are.

      • Pierre Elliott

Cause WHODINI aint handlin they biz.
They aint in the studio—or whatever.

Theres a DIFFERENCE between QUIK and WHODINI nlgga

But dont go and say that–like its fact.
It aint about rap pin–its about the passion for the craft.

you sound like their pissed off manager.

oh and by the way— SIT BACK DOWN!!

      • Vinsanity

I couldve easily said Big Daddy kane, Slick Rick, Kool Moe Dee, either way the point still stands and the facts remain the same. You sound like a pissed off groupie. So go ahead and sit back down on your boyfriends lap. Have you noticed that rappers from our time are already having to settle for smaller venues like casinos? How long you’ve been in the industry? Should’ve been paying attention. The only way to get paid these days is by doing shows so why not sign someone generate a buzz and make money with your feet up. Sign a young white kid or something (seems to be the new trend) pen and produce all his shit and stack bundles. I wanna see Quik succeed not fall off. Whys he going back to 1989 why not be 2013? Whos he trying to reach with this record? Why not make Grown Folk Music a record full of Quiks grooves id def get that considering im not a kid anymore nor do my kids let me be. I guess my taste in music just matured Quiker than yours, Obviously you said you would be rapping until 60….i can see you making records like “All by myself”…”Invisible spotlight”…”Where did everybody go”?…”Where my meds at”?….. “Another Day Another shit Stain”…etc

      • Pierre Elliott

YEP AND THE BEAT WILL BE HOT—CAUSE I MADE IT.
AND MY VERSES WILL BE THINGS PEOPLE CAN IDENTIFY WITH—–

      • Vinsanity

When a 43 year old man (yup Quiks old he got babies who got babies) says
hes going to channel his 19 year old self and be naive and stupid again
we call it a…..Mid Life Crisis. Get mad if you want but true is true… I gonna stop cause i mean look at your comments i can tell i got you up against the wall. I hope you learned something in all this since you in the music biz and all and didnt learn $hit and how the hell are Kids going to identify with a 60 year old rapper? Youre dumb, you probably paint by sticking your fingers in your ass.

      • Pierre Elliott

SEE THATS YOUR PROBLEM—YOU THINK IM WORRIED ABOUT SOME DAMN KIDS?

      • Pierre Elliott

AND DUDE I DONT RAP, I PRODUCE. AND I MAKE MY MONEY OFF OF PAINTINGS SO ITS SOMETHING I GOT LOVE FOR—IT AINT THE ONLY WAY I EAT.

      • Pierre Elliott

1989 IS WHEN MUSIC HAD LIFE, THATS WHAT HE MEANS..
I CAN TELL YOURE NOT A CREATOR..

I like the fact that he mentions, Dre, Muggs, and Battlecat. This dude got a good heart. LA has a lot of great producers.

  • U.P.T.nw4eva

To me he is the best producer in hip-hop and I’m an eastcoast cat. His production, playing several instruments, I mean this dude been ahead of the game. I like Havoc, Premo, Just Blaze etc. But Quik just has that ear for sounds and melodies. Just my opinion lol don’t attack me trolls.
