Drake Speaks On "Beef" With Kendrick Lamar & Comparisons To Ja Rule

(AllHipHop News) The perceived verbal back-and-forth between two of the leading young voices in Hip Hop has been a topic on conversation for the last several months. After Kendrick Lamar mentioned Drake among the emcees on his “Control” verse, many waited to hear what the Young Money rapper would say in response.

While some listeners felt Drake’s “The Language” and a few lines on the “Sh!t (Remix)” were aimed at Kendrick, the “Started From The Bottom” rhymer tells Vibe that he’s not into beefing on wax or responding to “Control” in particular.

In the magazine’s cover story, Drake says:

I don’t ever want to get into responses. It’s a commitment to go there. “The Language” is just energy. What it was inspired by, I’m sure that, and other things. It’s just me talking my shit. I never once felt the need to respond to that record. The sentiment he was putting forth is what he should have. Of course you wanna be the best. Where it became an issue is that I was rolling out an album while that verse was still bubbling, so my album rollout became about this thing. What am I supposed to say? Nah, we’ll be buddy-buddy? Mind you, I never once said he’s a bad guy [or] I don’t like him. I think he’s a fucking genius in his own right, but I also stood my ground as I should. And with that came another step, which then I have to realize I’m being baited and I’m not gonna fall. Jordan doesn’t have to play pickup to prove that he could play ball, no offense. But I’m not gonna give you the chance to shake me necessarily, ’cause I feel great. There’s no real issue. It’s tough because the people wanna see us tear each other down; I don’t wanna give them that. There’s no point. I have no ill feelings toward that guy. It’s just like, it’s there for me if I wanna fall for it. I’m just too smart for that. Hopefully it’s the last time I gotta talk about this, ’cause every time I open my mouth up about it, they take this piece and take this piece. And he’s hungry, so he’s going to do what he has to do like the BET [cypher]. But again, it’s not enough for me to go. We haven’t seen each other [since the BET cypher,] but I’m sure we’ll see each other and it’ll be cool. And if it’s not, then I guess that’s how our story unfolds.

Drake also addresses comparisons made between he and another singing rapper Ja Rule. According to Drizzy, he sees himself as more closely related to 50 Cent than his former rival.

I see myself more as 50 than Ja, not from a street perspective, but from a hitmaking perspective. I have the “21 Questions” and “Started From the Bottom.” I’ve tapped into both markets, whereas when Ja would go the street route it would be seen as a reach because 50 kept attacking him. So he’d have to stay in that girl lane. I can really rap, so I would never let that happen.

  • In other words, he knows Kendrick would have lit hisass up. I understand.

    • Casor_G

      Nobody ducking Kendrick Lamar

    • Correct!

    • MrNoName2K

Exactly what I derived from his comments..

    • Obi Won

    • BigHomie337

That’s what u got from that? He basically compared Kendrick to a nigga that never made it in ball that would go all out to beat Jordan even tho it wouldn’t mean anything cuz Jordan in the league playing in arenas and dude gonna be back in the park. He basically said Kendrick not on his level. Plus y’all niggas acting like Kendrick wanted beef. He clearly said it wasn’t a diss just telling ppl he wanna be the best.

    • LaurynHernandex

Kendrick ain’t say nothing to papoose.

  • majesticking

Ja came out street, hollar hollar jayz’s can i get a what what and not to mention seeing him and the goons on a queens street corner with my man Mike Geronimo in that black and white video. He started out street then started dropping joints for the ladies which he eventually stuck with because it was selling. Where he messed up is he did it too much and didn’t balance his projects out. Sort of like what Puff told Big your album is dope yet if you don’t have anything radio can play you’ll just be another broke ass rapper from Brooklyn. Here balance is the key if you want to maintain a balanced fan base. Eventually his fan base became all females which is fine if thats what you want just know there a flip side to it and thats what 50 kept saying about Ja the streets is hungry and they tired of all that singing. Furthermore Ja can really rap its like your comment suggest that he can’t. Balance is the key here.

    • Robertcarvalho

The black and white video is get the fortune Mic genrnimo ain’t rapping on that, but mic genrnimo was featured on ja’s when he was with Cash money click the single is called “for my click”

  • brotha_man

but jordan would if he was called out….in fact it was in his contract. hell, if u called jordan out on ping pong he would make u prove it.

  • jd

Difference is MJ would battle ANYONE who even THOUGHT that they were on his level. He loved destroying nobodies. Thats what made him great. Never backing down or staying away from a challenge. But then again, dude grew up a Raptors fan. No offense.

    • You Got Me Hott Out Here!!

Bullshit. He was too busy doing real shit.

      • jd

Drake must not know after Jordan had already RETIRED he stepped on the court for a PICK UP GAME to take on ROOKIE Oj Mayo because Mayo was trash taking and Jordan destroyed him

    • You Got Me Hott Out Here!!

      Yes, nigga. RETIRED.

  • Reblogged this on HUEY mix wit RILEY.

  • Black Jay

You know what? Drake is soft. I mean, according to him it’s stupid to engage any emcee in battle on record. Okay… But what do you have to say about Big Daddy Kane, Jay Z, Juice Crew, KRS-ONE, Roxanne, MC Shan, LL COOL J, and Kool Moe D????? Drake is point blank AFRAID and SOFT.

Okay…. He used the Michael Jordan situation as an example. THATS BOGUS! Because if he were into sports he would know how MJ was. Let Charles Barkley or any other person come out of their mouth to spit crap about how they were better than him…. Michael Jordan would make a personal example out of your *ss and play you on his highlight reel. It was about colleague against colleague and not any dude playing pick up on the street. And last time I checked, Kendrick Lamar is a COLLEAGUE! Jay Z and Nas were COLLEAGUES.

Drake is just afraid that Kendrick will end that career.

And actually I’m kinda mad at the title of his magazine cover. Real kings don’t run. Real kings defend the thrown. Drake is trying to hide behind it.

  • ty

Ja actually had hit records and he also sold alot of records niggaz just got tied of his singing and g unit shady aftermath shut murder Inc down rap beefs was real then now these corn balls like drake can do what they want to make all these love songs then make trap music then when people diss them they don’t reply and when they see each other they shake hands murder Inc and g unit had real fights bad boys and death row had real beef roca fella and dblock was really going at it lil kim and foxy had real beef mob deep had real beef with true life dipset got they ass beat by junior mafia lil kim goons shoot up hot97 when they saw cnn and she sent her boy friend to bust some shots at 50 when he was dissing beef was real then drake and young money ain’t built for Cuban links lol

    • Robertcarvalho

Apparently Pac and death row confronted bad boy on the soul train awards in 96.

  • Jordan was never afraid to play on the street or open gym…bad person to name as justification for being afraid of head on confrontations

    • LaurynHernandex

STFU. Jordan never played no hotsauce at the rucker.

      • The rucker isnt the only outdoor basketball court dumbass

      • LaurynHernandex

        Yes it is fa g.

  • Obi Won

Ok I get it now, Drake just doesn’t want to compete. He just wants to rap, and enjoy the benefits of being an entertainer, nothing wrong with that. He’s like the Steve Kerr of music, just let him shoot his three pointers, don’t worry about defense & get his championships.

    Jordan NO, Steve Kerr, Yes

  • MrNoName2K

Wouldn’t expect anything more or less from ol Wheelchair Jimmy..and even worse, he’s ducking Kendrick Lamar of all people lol ..whats really going

  • Elayorx El

Drake, in my humble, I liken more to Lebron James, than a Michael Jordan. His statement up top says it all, and is a representation of the true balance Hip-Hop needs at this present point in time, because obviously, too many folks have been doped up on all this violent drama, that in no way should be the proper bedrock solely for constructing a true MC anyway. Lebron to me, has shown qualities MJ never did, and that speaks to where we need to be moving as a culture, as it is no accident the post-Jordan era was one of extreme individualism, and selfishness. MJ had nothing to do with this? He even tows the line of guilt in a past commercial, but that’s what I’m saying, I think if Lebron were in that position, he would have just outright admitted his participation, in hindsight. Drake is the KING right now, due to talent, and skills, and the likes of Rakim, KRS, MC LYTE, and others, should be proud. His Airness was that dude, and pound for pound, may have had an equal, who’s number is being raised to the rafters on March 1st, 2014. I trust that those who care, will all be tuning in.

    • Troll_E_G

Did u really write that lol….Drake not the king, far from it…he just commercial….Kendrick is the better emcee n rapper…Drake just marketed better

      • You Got Me Hott Out Here!!

        LOL Dumb ass statement

      • LaurynHernandex

Lol yeah right. Most numbers beat opinions. Drake the king. YOu can’t argue with sales.

      • So if we’re goin by numbers, you sayin Hammer was the king at one time? How about Vanilla Ice? They both had numbers Aubrey can only dream of.

    • johnblacksad

Chris Bosh maybe… if you catch the drift

      • MrNoName2K

lol you a fool for that…

  • You Got Me Hott Out Here!!

People really can’t stand that Drake is the King of rap right now.

    • johnblacksad

I can’t stand that people think that Drake is the King of rap right now… smh

      • It’s this new estro-generation we got runnin around fam. See the main thing we forgot back in the day, was that all those crack babies HAD to grow up eventually…

  • Dubz

MJ loved competition…he was always competing…even when others wasn’t. I don’t think that was a good comparison. Only reason why people kept asking about it is because Drake was in his feelings and was afraid to give a legit answer. All you had to say was “I didn’t see it as a diss, I thought it was a dope verse” And it would’ve been done with. You started talking that “It wasn’t authentic….blah blah blah” and now you back tracking.

    • calford6

MAN!, I rarely reply but you are spot on on this, he should of kept it 100 and said what he felt!

    • LaurynHernandex

Nah. MJ played NBA ball. You wouldn’t see him playing in the rucker vs hotsauce. You a failure at life btw.

      • Correct me if I’m wrong, but ain’t Kendrick in the exact same mainstream music industry as Drake? Don’t he have the same type of major backing as Drake? So goin off your own analogy, that makes him every bit as “NBA” as Aubrey. Lemme guess though, he’s only “Rucker” cuz YOU don’t like him, right?

      • Dan_Tebasco

        Shut up kunt

  • ChiVa02

Which Michael Jordan? The same one who was talking sh*t AT his hall of fame induction? Pick another guy, Drake..Jordan isn’t the right comparison.

    • You Got Me Hott Out Here!!

Best comparison available. Either that or Kobe.

      • Not even close. I’m nowhere near bein a Jay-Z fan, but he has more right to claim MJ/Kobe status, and if I actually cared enough to do so I’d list a few more with more right to say that.

  • bigdoe6

Jordan battled everytime he got on that court. Keep Jordan name out cha mouth you cosby kid. This is battle hip hop. Hip Hop was built on rap battles. Drake aint built for this.

    • LaurynHernandex

Didn’t jordan get his shit snapped by AI.

      • BigHomie337

Nope. Over son crossed Jordan but Jordan dropped 40 and the Bulls won easily.

      • LaurynHernandex

You just said no and yes. Ai crossed jordan over don’t matter who won. I said did he get his shit snapped and he did.

    • LaurynHernandex

Also he’s not just talking about Kendrick. By using Jordan he’s saying look what happened to Lebron James playing streetball and getting beat. Michael jordan wouldn’t be going to the ruucker to play hotsauce he’d play in the nba. Why should drake stoop down to play someone who has something to gain?

    • LilPatBeatz

After signing that Jordan deal him and Jordan are best friends according to the Sh*t remix! lol

Kendrick is ambulance chasin…keep taunting and he’s gonna let his mouth sign a check his ass can’t cash…Kendrick drunk off “INFAMIL”….and smelling his piss…A newbie that doesn’t respect Drake’s place in music and thinks he’s the bully to take it……keep it up Can-I-Bus Jr….Never say I didn’t warn yall…(in my Drake singing voice).

      • LilPatBeatz

Foreal Kendrick is biting the hand that feeds him just to get a reaction! Poetic Justice wouldn’t have been as huge without the assist from Drake and neither would F*ckin’ Problems but this dude keeps tryna take shots at his “rap partners”! If he called out Future or somebody completely irrelevant to his fan base then it wouldn’t have been such a big deal but Kendrick is calling out his past collaborators which just canibalizes his own records! I’ve got love for both artists and even bought their cds on the day it dropped so it’s sad to see them going at each other over seemingly NOTHING!

  • king

This guy stays in the girl lane wtf is he talking about.

  • lando

Ja are you reading this? Drake really tripping. He ain’t no 50 either. I lost some respect with this ole ralph tresvant ass ninja.

  • iLMagotape44life

lmao drake took a steamy $hit on Ja.

  • Sicko

Kendrick can save it for when his album release then drop a bomb on these rap niggas once again and make them get their panties in bunch yet again. Kendrick is to the point now that people are ANTICIPATING MORE, everything he say will go VIRAL INSTANTLY, that Control Verse was buzzing for like 24-48 hours, nigga was trending none stop for like a DAY after Control Dropped then again once his BET Cyper Verse Dropped. And DRAKE got the 50 vs Jay beef all twisted, the “STREETS” was behind 50 Cent and G-Unit 100%, Ja Rule just like Drake had the BITCHES on his side because he sang on his Records JUST LIKE DRAKE.

I think both artist are DOPE and neither needs the beef to sell a lot of records but if your going to beef GO ALL IN. Drake made up with Chris Brown, as soon as he see Kendrick in person he is going to be on some Peace Shit as well…Which is not a BAD THING don’t get me wrong
