Producer 40 Says Posthumous Aaliyah Album With Drake Not Happening

(AllHipHop News) Some fans of the late R&B singer Aaliyah may be sadden by the latest news concerning another reported project from the “One In A Million” perfomer. Others may be rejoicing. Either case, it appears the long talked about Aaliyah/Drake collaborative album produced by Noah “40” Shebib has been canned.

40 tells Vibe magazine he decided to pull out of the project after the negative feedback from die-hard Aaliyah followers. Many fans of “Baby Girl” were not supportive of the 2012 Drake-featured track “Enough Said” nor the fact that Timbaland, the man who produced many of Aaliyah’s hits, was not involved in the album. 40 reveals that it was also Aaliyah’s mother’s request that the project not go forward that sealed the deal on the cancellation.

40 to Vibe:

The world reacting to Drake’s involvement so negatively, I just wanted nothing to do with it. That was a very sad experience for me. I was naïve to the politics surrounding Aaliyah’s legacy and a bit ignorant to Timbaland’s relationship and everybody else involved and how they’d feel. Tim said to me “Don’t stop, make the album.” I think that was Tim taking the position of, “I’m not going to stop you. If you’re not going to do it, that’s your decision.” But ultimately, I wasn’t comfortable and didn’t like the stigma. We released [“Enough Said”], but I was seven songs deep. [Aaliyah’s] mother saying “I don’t want this out” was enough for me. I walked away very quickly.

40 says he was originally brought into the process by Aaliyah’s uncle Barry Hankerson and her cousin Jomo Hankerson. The father-son duo own Blackground Records; the label that released Aaliyah’s music. Drake later asked 40 if he could participate in the album.

I think it’s Degrassi not Disney.

  • OG_Lil_Pretty_Thug

Why has Drake always been so obsessed over Aaliyah?

    • nastinupe

Because Drake always wants what he can’t have, like a spoiled child. That’s why he’s always trying to call hoes out that left him when they are happy with someone else. Trying to mess up their current situation. Aaliyah is like the current unattainable chick to Drake. She’s dead so he can’t have her, but he’s trying to get close and connect with her through music.

      • Inmadopicouroz✓QUEENSᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

        you so Drake !

      • OG_Lil_Pretty_Thug

So he basically has a sexual fantasy for a deceased person. What creeps me out is that dude has a tattoo of her, never liked him for some reason.

    • Taryn Haughton

Drake really creeps me out now. He has a tattoo of her face on his back and her birthday month and day on his side or on his arm. Like dude you’re so obsessed that you needed to get tattoos in relation to her …

I dunno why they thought that sounded like a good idea, pretty sure Drake has never even met Aaliyah what would she think about some random guy taking her songs and making a duo-album… Plus Aaliyah fans and Drake fans are not necessarily the same…

    • hoeyuno

I bet tim turned them down in the past.

  • Reblogged this on Money Hu$tle.

  • i’mreloaded!

I’m not a big fan of re-creating the deceased music, but if you are gonna do that, at least make it how we remembered her music and that’s with Tim. Or else it will just be a disaster like that 2pac Loyal to the Game cd when Em produced it.

    • Bumpy Johnson

      that was horrible

  • brotha_man

Tim and Missy are the only two that should be allowed to touch Aaliyah’s ish….Maybe R.Kelly

    • Jayson C Williams

Really r Kelly? I was with u up until that

      • brotha_man

he helped do her first album…gotta be something for that

      • SBRon

Yeah, but there may come a time VERY SOON where other artists won’t want their name attached to anything R. Kelly…

      • Bumpy Johnson

her first album in my opinion is her best…ur crazy. R.Kelly is a musical genius

      • Jayson C Williams

Are u guys stupid? The dude rapped her?? Ran off n got married! U dumb fux really think her moms was going to give the ok? Last time I checked her most successful albums came with timberland miss me with the bs r Kelly shit. Nugga 50 years old still em wearing throw backs. He’ll never be Marvin Gaye when u rape girls. Ya make me sick hope ur sisters become singers n he’s their producer

      • Bumpy Johnson

        STFU right quick.

      • Jayson C Williams

Suck ya mothers dic right quick lol

      • Bumpy Johnson

        what city you stay at?

      • Taryn Haughton

        My same reaction though lol

  • #Fail I was wondering what was going on…I’m thinking the approached it wrong. Aaliyah is R&B and quite frankly most people these days that are famous or influential don’t know how to properly produce and market that

  • William Witherz

Well… I say this will give Drake more time to add his verses to the terrible trap rappers that we continue to put out.

Dude shouldn’t have caved into the pressure if Timmy said it was cool. Not until it was done anyway…

  • spanky520

im glad they decided not to continue with it.hopefully her fam gets timbaland to do the project.only people who actually knew her should be involved, not people like drake who she never met.that’ll be just for sales.show respect & honer her memory with a cd done the right way.only dmx no flake

  • Immortal

IMO let the woman rest in peace. Let those of us who remember her and her music enjoy the memories, and for those that are just enjoying her music now, enjoy her for what she was, not as what someone wants to interpret her to be in his mind. She came, did her thing, and was taken home. No one should try to recreate her or next there will be hologram tours of her. Would she really want that?

  • bigdoe6

If Timbo aint involved. I don’t want to hear it. Rest in Paradise Baby Girl.

  • Dumbcrap

wow someone with morals and a brain. ROFL at Drake. But honestly who thought Drake made sense, having nothing to do with Aaliyah. Its like that garbage Eminem produced the Tupac album, im positive it was called Loyal to the Game. Wow that was so bad and disrespectful, had tupacs voice chopped up so he could put partial words together and Tupac would sound like he was saying G- Unit and Em. Even if that wasnt enough the CD was just plain bad. Maybe 1 new verse (i think), HORRIBLE beats, i mean horrible and instead of putting people on the CD Tupac worked with like even the remaining outlaws (not a fan but would rather have them then……) well then G-Unit. Every 2-3 tracks had someone from G Unit on it.

    • Polecat

One of them albums that had PACs life Eminem produced was tight Homie, you tripping.

  • AlbertoRipRon

You can’t put corny and simp with Aaliyah man. You just can’t do it. Then Timbo isn’t involved? yea, cancel that. I don’t want to hear the greatness of Aaliyah mashed up with Drake and 40’s tracks. No way.

  • I actually liked that “Enough Said” record. I think the angelic sound of Aaliyah’s voice over the blissful atmospheric sounds of 40 would have made a beautiful sound. But I definitely understand his respecting the family’s wishes.

    • Taryn Haughton

Yea it’s nice he respected that cuz blackground records doesn’t really care if her parents and brother are for it or not. Her uncle owns all of her stuff and her parents and brother have no power over what happens.
