Rahiel Tesfamariam

Washington Post Columnist Calls For “Death Of World Star Hip Hop”

(AllHipHop News) Worldstarhiphop.com is one of the most visited entertainment websites in the world. The site features music videos from both well-established artists and up-and-coming performers. It also highlights videos that depict violent acts often committed by young, black individuals. In response to those depictions of violence, activist and writer Rahiel Tesfamariam penned an op-ed for the Washington Post titled “Death of World Star Hip Hop (D.O.WSHH).”

In the article, Tesfamariam calls for World Star to experience “brand damaging from hip-hop artists and community activists” similar to Jay Z’s take down of auto-tune on his 2009 track “D.O.A. (Death of Auto-tune).” While acknowledging WSHH’s right to freedom of speech, she also brands the website as “one of the most culturally damaging media platforms in existence today.”

Tesfamariam is just the latest public figure to offer criticism of World Star. Last year members of the Zulu Nation started a petition to persuade the site to remove “Hip Hop” from its name. The Minister of Information for the Zulu Nation, Quadeer “MC Spice” Shakur, argued that World Star was misrepresenting the foundations and true principles of Hip Hop.

“WorldStarHipHop has no respect, as far as I’m concerned, for our people and our music,” Shakur told AllHipHop.com last March. “If it was in fact just a site for what we call ‘entertainment’ then let it be known at the bottom of your page. Put some kind of disclaimer that you are not in fact involved in or a part of real Hip Hop culture.”

In the same article, one of the forefathers of Hip Hop, Grandmaster Melle Mel, also expressed his opinion that WSHH was not a true representation of the culture.

“WorldStarHipHop has no more to do with Hip Hop than FedEx has to do with the federal government,” said Melle Mel.

While World Star has its critics, the site also has its defenders. Huff Post Live hosted the Google+ discussion “Do ‘Hood Sites’ Normalize Black Stereotypes?” moderated by Marc Lamont Hill. Panelist Mandon Lovett offered his take that WSHH is only shining a light on the violence that’s happening in urban America. The independent filmmaker reinforced World Star’s tag that the site is the “CNN of the Ghetto.”

Chicago rapper Rhymefest also defended World Star during the Huff Post exchange. He points out that other video streaming sites provide the same type of content as WSHH.

“We’re not here talking about YouTube,” said Rhymefest. “We’re not here talking about Vimeo. We’re not sitting here talking about all of these sites that do the same thing that World Star does.”

In her WashPost piece, Tesfamariam addresses those who stand up for WSHH.

“To defend World Star Hip Hop is to defend the normalization of violent stereotypes and exploitation of pain, anger and brokenness,” she writes.

LIKE I ALWAYS SAY: YOU DON’t like something, why do u care so much?
Besides, they all say world star is a misrepresentation of black community. wshh didn’t create anything new, it’s just broadcasting to a large audience.

man where i stay even without wwshh this stuff word still be going on is a stereotype or is just upset this is in most PoC’s lives this is REALITY !

  • Black Jay

I have to say that I don’t agree with her on this one. It’s supply and demand. I personally believe the website is as damaging as she says. It does untold harm to the perception of Black People. But to censor it or attempt to take it down due to that reason would open the floodgate to numerous other venues. I mean this site has done a lot of damage. A lot! But so has porn. Why isn’t she over there trying to take that down? Everyone has a PISS PRODUCT OF THE DAY that they want to eliminate. But this is America. Don’t like it? Turn it off and do you.

I believe freedom of speech grants WSHH the right to showcase whatever they want and also believe the site is damaging to the progression of the black community. Both can be true. She shouldn’t work on taking down WSHH; no she should focus on why people love it so much and why the youth are eager to showcase ignorant behavior.

I do agree with the Zulu Nation however; drop hip hop from your title… because most of that shtt is not hip hop.

I truly hate the fact they have Hip Hop in the name. I don’t care what they put out, but it has nothing to do with Hip Hop. Same with Love and Hip Hop. I don’t disgree with her, but as Rollo Goodlove said “Niggas gon be niggas. So you might as well get paid while you bullsh@$in!!”

One could say the same thing about AHH too…

      • Terrance

It was well written. You have a future in writing. IMO.

      • Crazy cuz my teachers used to tell me that same thing all thru school. Maybe I should apply for an AHH position, lord KNOWS they need all the help they can get right about now…but then again, my articles prob. wouldn’t have enough typos for their liking. LMAO

      • Terrance

Maybe you should apply. It actually ran across my mind. Nothing like a good read to get the mind jump started.

  • Kevin Anthony

Or..don’t watch videos that have nothing to do with Hip Hop. “Food for Thought” Kevin Anthony-21 on soundcloud

  • Peter Kushing

She should be a model in one of those worldstar videos lol

  • Rhymefest has a point…wshh gets most of their content from youtube.

    • Celz

The point is it gets all of the negative content and none of the positive content. If you have one racist white man then you have one ignorant bigot with the freedom of speech. If you get a large group of them together and they begin feeding off of each other’s negative opinions and turn them into actions then you have a hate group. Worldstar is a conglomeration of the most ignorant elements of black culture on the web and then intensified. You see ignorant niccas everywhere doing illegal shyt yelling “Worldstar!” hoping to get their 15 minutes of fame. You have to admit some of these fights and other ignorant shyt would have never happened if people didn’t think they could be in a trending video. And even worse whenever Worldstar covers something legitimate and it makes it onto a reputable news cycle it has a huge ass “Worldstar” watermark all over it directing people to the cesspool of black culture. Worldstar is worse than MTO, Bossip, TMZ, AHH (naw I’m kiddin), and any other gossip trash site you can find..

      • Most of the time the ones that are yelling worldstar are the ones that are filming the fights…and lets be real most people don’t wanna see positive content, which is why the site is so popular now, they have positive content on the site also…if you don’t wanna see street fights, don’t go to wshh or don’t search for it in youtube, its that simple…wshh might be worse than those sites but its reality, those gossip sites lie and start rumors..also this is the internet, there’s far more gruesome sites than wshh

      • Celz

You gotta point.. I’ll rob you and take half your bread cuz you know that’s better than all of it.. It’s not me visiting WSHH that’s the issue, it’s the ignorant white and black people who are influenced by the trash. I occasionally visit WSHH and I have a great time when I do. But like every thing in life moderation is key. Some of these ignorant niccas get caught in the downward spiral of keepin it real. And get confused that bein a thug is actually a career choice. Then racist people see the shyt and instead of taking it for the insignificant sample that it is, actually use it to justify their misguided beliefs. Denying your blackness is even worse than WSHH so I’m not saying do that. But could you imagine if the Harlem Renaissance, the Civil Rights Movement, or everyone in Leimert Park was only interested in selling our brothers, sisters, and culture out for some online advertising dollars. Look at AllHipHop they do a decent job of keeping the trash balanced out on here. Maybe they should care about this site more, but at least they care some. WSHH could give 2 fuccs about black culture, hip-hop, presenting positive influences for the youth, or anything besides a quick come up.

      • what do u mean by influence? so you think the reason why people are street fighting is because of wshh? wshh make people do bad things? lol.i dont think so..racist people are gonna be racist regardless,..crack kills and destroys families, wshh is not killing anything, come on thats not comparable..don’t get crazy lol..

      • Celz

Influence, yea, it’s human nature to be influenced; especially underage girls with absent father figures.

If I hit Compton Blvd. and start servin is it ok as long as there are other crack dealers around? Basically you are arguing that WSHH is ok because other forms of ignorance exist and some people enjoy negative shyt. If I swear to never turn anyone on to crack and only serve fiends is that ok because I didn’t “influence” them?

If you see a bunch of men and women that you would never date or associate with in life on WSHH over and over then the site has a problem. What happened to honor, dignity, and respect? Good luck findin any of that on WSHH.

      • what im say is wshh doesn’t make people do bad things, just like a movie, just like music, just like a video game.that sh!t doesn’t cause people to act violent..you make it seem like people are purposely fighting just to get on wshh,.

      • regal84

But there’s a difference…while movies, video games, and music are directly influenced by real life, it is not quite the same as seeing “Sharkeisha” suckerpunching someone and us loving every minute of it…What this site has done (whether adverntently or inadvertently) is make “ghetto celebrities” out of instances such as this, and it only encourages the behavior for a quick 15 minutes of fame…Ask WSHH how many checks have they sent to the people that are in the vidoes posted on their site…

      • Celz

What I’m saying is you’re wrong. It’s extremely naive to think that 11-19 year old kids aren’t influenced by what they see. Just because you can tell the difference doesn’t mean they can. Your ability to spell means you were most likely educated, which means you most likely had some sense of a stable adolescence, which means you most likely had some form of a decent role model. LOTS OF NICCAS DON’T FAM. Lots of niccas really think “Yo if I rap good and stay a real nicca I’ll blow”. WSHH reinforces that fantasy everyday.

Lmao at people not bein influenced. I guess all them lil kids, who are immune to influence, just started wearin skinny jeans nationwide as a coincidence right?

      • Immortal

I agree with you, but at least they have the Worldstarr honeys section. Nobody argues over content there. Just video ho’s takin it off. But all joking aside, it’s a shame that a child can see this ish on both sides of that site. Not the best thing for a child to see, but someone will say that’s why you have to police your kids on the net.

  • i don’t get why its not hiphop, yeah its all ignorant but just because its not positive doesn’t mean its not hiphop right? is it not a reflection of whats going on in the hoods of America? a elite rapper like nas raps about the ignorance of the hood in rhyme form and we call it hiphop, but when there’s a website (worldstarhiphop) that shows the ignorance of the hood from video people complain about the name of the site.whats the deal?

    • Terrance

As you said… Nas is sharing hood stories in “ART FORM”. There is nothing artistic about ppl bludgeoning each other on video recorded by cell phones.

What’s going on in the HOODS of America is just that… “What’s going on in the HOODS of America”.

Though Hip-Hop plays a role in what goes on in the HOOD, it’s not a BIG enough role to champion HOOD RATCHETNESS as Hip-Hop. #ABSURD

      9enteractive .com

      • if there was a site where nas would rap in every ignorant video, commentary rapping (free styling) about whats going on in every video wouldn’t that be considered hiphop?

      • Terrance

        Rapping IS Hip-Hop…

    • Flea

Take it from someone who knows first hand.
Only by taking the text book definition can that site claim any ties to hip hop

yeah – worldstar don’t have a filtering system like other sites I blog on – that if something inappropriate is blogged, it get deleted – worldstar has 100% foolish commenters – worse than the videos

      • John Q. Public

Half of what u post is ignorant and racist. u are one the “foolish commenters” I was referring to. And u are always calling white ppl child molesters for no reason. (we can see your comments). Im guessing u were molested as a child. Or you are just a troll

Im def not closed minded, the man assumed I was white so he said all white ppl watch child porn. Whether its World Star Hip Hop or World Star Entertainment. Its still going to be the same ignorant ish on the site. Negative press gets the most hits, its nothing people love more than to see the humiliation of another human being. I’ve see people set their own people up recording, just to have some shine on worldstar. If not them then it would just be another site getting rich. Its more like National Geographic of animals smacking each other, acting tough and rapping.

I dont see nothing wrong with worldstarhiphop although they promote violence its not up to the visitors to decide. i think its best to ask the victims (people who have been affected by wshh) how they feel in order to avoid the site showing fights and etc. but then again this is why the majority of wssh visitors visit the site for. wshh can always put the unnecessary videos on other domain , but it looks like thats what they get paid for and any changes to the website means they will loose some revenues.

  • Nana De Baus

Rhymefest is wrong to compare youtube to worldstarhiphop. First of all youtube is a major cooperate company which means users get restriction for bad uploads and with wshh users only get to comment on uploads.

    • ThatBostonMan

WorldStar is actually the hiphop TMZ. And in my opinion it is okay. Why shouldn’t there be a gossip site of the hood?

If there shouldn’t, then why is it okay for TMZ?

  • bigdoe6

I have no issues with worldstar. They upload good content and bad content. Lately they been going overboard with a lot of senseless videos. They need to find some kind of balance though. Same for Youtube.

  • Flea

If we stopped acting so ignorant and ratchet in these streets, there would be no WSHH….can’t blame them for what others do…yeah, they can ignore it, but where is the money in that??? It’s one of the most visited sites in the world for a reason, and thatls because as a culture, we love watching train wrecks…Seems like we’re blaming WSHH for our own guitly pleasure…

    • Immortal

But I can blame AHH for making stories off items and stories from another site. This IS supposed to be a hip hop site and centuries long ago, it was and a damn good one.

      • regal84

I agree with that…AHH used to be just that…All Hip Hop…but they did recognize the gowing trends in other sites such as WSHH and MTO and Bossip, so they are starting to follow in that same format to gain and keep viewers…Instead of being leaders (like they were), they are now followers…

    • ThatBostonMan

TMZ does the same exact thing. Do we see people claiming TMZ has a moral responsibility to censor itself?

What is wrong with you pathetic, foolish, race haters who purposely take your dumb, morally bankrupt minds to a black site to peddle your hatred. I know what’s wrong with you but do you know what’s wrong with you? Are you one of those incest babies like Hitler? Maybe you’re a victim of abuse by one of your relatives and to make him (or her) seem normal, he/she castigates people who are different from themselves – let’s say black men, to make you think that there is someone worse in the world than them. If we were to tally up all the rapes of white men versus the rapes of black men in this part of the world, I’m fairly certain the numbers would not even be close. Your relatives rape more than any. Your posts just make you look beyond ignorant, as though your brain is damaged – which leads me back to thinking that you are an incest baby, like Hitler.

  • Reblogged this on Jessie Spencer's Blogspot.

  • I do agree with the article, WorldStar is not YouTube or Vimeo….they damn near are extorting indie artist charging damn near $700 and up to be on their site oh yeah with the options to buy views??? Really?? I wish i would, smdh Imagine YouTube doing that….lets just call a spade a spade they throw fucked up content that only damages the black community to drive traffic and they take advantage of these poor artist while extorting hip hop to make their profit. Q should call it WorldStar cuz the site definitely doesn’t compliment hip hop, hence why I love AllHipHop….Real hip hop not shit niggas paid to get on the site but content they stand behind, and yes i like the fact they spruced it up with stories and some gossip…its called growth

FYI I don’t like WSHH however I must commend any black owned website that can attain as much success as their major competitors, it’s just a shame their disgracing their own community with the negativity.

    • ItGoesDownINtheDM

yeah wordstar and youtube are 2 different animals lol … youtube will actually pull a video down with the quickness … wshh if you pay them will post it no matter what it is lol …. they are not into taking down vids that they are paid to post … they even steal video content from other sites and post it like its thier and wont remove those either … wshh actually participates in whats posted they play a part … youtube and sites like that allow the public to post videos and they monitor those vids for age restictions and copywrite infrigements etc…. wshh doesnt really do any kind of quality control especially if your paying lol and they have adult content on the site but no age restictions are present, which is really my only petpive with the site …… yall gotta get ya info right if you going to blast a site lol

      • ThatBostonMan

Does censorship actually help people? If the information is censored then you have less to work with as a researcher or as a person studying. If you’re a sociologist you do not want censorship. If you’re a psychologist you do not want censorship.

Define the black community? If the black community exists then where is the investment capital, the education, the fundamentals to allow these young people to do something productive with their lives?

Let’s not blame WorldStar for everything wrong with society. Society is messed up whether or not there ever is a WorldStar. WorldStar profits from society being messed up but so does everyone else. Colleges charge higher tuition each year. So those colleges promote ignorance in the same way WorldStar does.

But it’s still better to have colleges than to not have colleges. The same can be said about WorldStar.

  • While I agree w/ many of her observations, I believe in a free market. Why not focus on the mentalities of the perpetrators of the ignorance and the millions of people that watch/share it (the content)?

At the end of the day, people like what they like – It is what it is

    • ThatBostonMan

Why are people ignorant? For one, a college education costs more than most people can afford. So until we figure out how to educate people we cannot blame young people for being violent or upset.

Until education is free and accessible for all, we cannot blame ignorant people for being ignorant. Society keeps people ignorant on purpose.

ppl do what they chose, even if unconscious to the consequences of their decision. time for ppl to take responsibility for themselves and hold themselves accountable, no one else can correct or heal someone else’s errors. heal thy self and stop looking for blame and justification for your own dis-ease.

Why not show both sides? Why show one side or the other?

Fck World Star, they mainly put up negative and hood orientated dumb schitt up on their website last time I looked *years ago*…

Atleast YouTube and them other sites have different music genres and a variety of positive informational videos to watch (cooking, cars, clothing, DIY videos etc)

WorldStar make a living off dumbing people down…

    • ThatBostonMan

This is true, it does display negative or hood oriented dumb shit. At the same time if you get to the point in your life where you don’t live in the hood where are you going to go to see how life is in the hood?

There has to be websites which capture the worst attitudes of the hood. Maybe if enough people know what life is like in the hood we can change the hood into something less negative. Hiding the negative aspects does not change the fact that it’s happening.

Do people get bullied and get into fights? They always have. Every generation has been in the same sort of situations. It repeats itself over and over again. None of the people were talking about how to solve bullying or how to reduce violence.

And I don’t buy the argument that everyone in the hood wants to be famous. Some people want to be famous but not everyone cares about being famous. Everyone wants different things and the reason for the conflict is that there isn’t enough opportunity for people to get what they want from life in general.

theres a difference between showing what life is like in the hood, and glamourising it and then calling it ‘hip hop’, what they show 99% of it isn’t hip hop. theres plenty of documentaries that show hood life and so without glamourising it, you can find most of them on youtube to.

        No doubt.

The news shouldn’t be about ethics or politics. It should be about showing the environment as it is so that people can do something to fix it or make it better.

Censorship only hides the truth. If people are fighting and are violent then how are we supposed to address it if we don’t see it? The girl in the video who beat up the other girl? People say she did it to be famous? If she wants to fight for a living there are sports where she can do that.

There should be a place for fighting in the context of sport. There should be sites where people can see violence or anything else. At the same time those sites should discourage violence by providing a disclaimer which says so.

World Star should capture reality as accurately as they can just as rappers and artist attempt to do something similar. Once reality is captured then it is up to the academics and community activists to address the actual problem which is the mindset of the youth as well as the economic and political circumstances.

Are you really worried about not being able to see fighting or violence? SMH its outside your door get off the computer and walk the neighborhood. Go volunteer at a school if you really wanna know whats going on. Its not about censorship. Its about a website sensationalizing nonsense in the name of “Hip Hop”. We dont need that !

Worldstar does indeed promote violence and exploitation of our youth,. You can look at any fight video and hear the video personnel or crowd Yelling, “Worldstar!!!”. They don’t yell the name when they are pulling a prank on someone or laughing at something, its always about a violent act. I think so many of these kids want to be seen on camera being tough and “bout it”, they they are not thinking about the decisons they are making and how bad it looks for the Hip hop culture. Worldstar is NOT hip hop, it just has certain sprinkles of the hip hop culture.

I think they know what type of traffic that the title :hip hop” brings, so they continue to brand it as such. I think that it is indeed hurting the culture. Its only a matter of time before someone is killed, while someone is yelling “WORLDSTAR!!!” as it happens. They are not helping at all, and only care about numbers….not the culture.

    • BlackCrown216

ILPVIDEO.COM is similar to worldstar, but it does not have the same amount of traffic, and i really think its because it doesnt have “hip hop” in its name.
