Nas Names His Favorite Southern Rappers

(AllHipHop News) Nasir Jones is considered by many rap fans as the reigning King of New York, but that does not prevent the Queens emcee from sharing his thoughts on his southern peers.

During a sit down with Nice Kicks to talk bout his new business venture 12AM Run, Nas also provides his list of favorite southern rappers. Both members of OutKast make the cut as well as the leader of MMG, a pair of new school rapper/producers, and two of Texas’ finest.

“J. Cole’s there. Big K.R.I.T. Scarface is the don straight up. Rozay. Bun B. 3 Stacks. Big Boi. It’s a long list,” says Nas.

I’d give almost the same answer if I had to answer that question. I don’t know how I feel about Ross in there, but I’d throw in Devin the Dude with an honorable mention for Young Buck.

For a while I thought B.o.B could fit on that list, but nah. He lost me with Airplanes.

Big kit is top 3 new artist of this generation of new rappers….best out the south

  • bigdoe6

Top rappers from the south: Goodie Mob, Geto Boys, Outkast, Mista Mike, Mystikal, Trick Daddy, JT Money, Juvenile, 8ball & MJG, Tela, Mia X, BG, Young Buck, and UGK.

    • Myleage

young buck? and no t.i. luda or jeezy? but the dude who cried to fifty and got dropped from cash money? wheres master p, wayne, david banner, kilo ali, killer mike, curren$y, j cole, slim thug, pastor troy, man your list sucks.

      • bigdoe6

Sorry brother i couldn’t name them all but thanks for adding the others. You’re appreciated.

    • Christopher Thompson

I agree with your list, JT Money may have been the best from the south Lyrically back in the day!

  • No Scarface, but Rosay Perez? Uh, er, I meant, Officer Ricky Rosay?

    • Truth Powell

He did say Scarface. That’s an easy question tho. They should ask him who his fave NYC rappers are.

      • >>Suprised look & asks :

        “Was that a $hot fired @ NY?”

‘Chet is mad Doo Doo grits on the commercial level, but dudes like Mikey D & DJ Grand Wizard Rasheen still hit you with that old school, gritty, unmastered ‘chet that sound like a cassette & definitely too raw for radio.

        Mikey D & JadaKiss
        Peep ^^

      • Truth Powell

No shot at NYC . I love that place. But you know they have a problem with supporting each other. NYC dudes hate to big up anther NYC dude. Seems like it’s almost trendy for an NYC emcee to give props to a southern rapper.

      • No doubt, what’s even sadder, on the mainstream RAP level, the South does have better rappers, although on the Hip hop level, NY has the best MC’s.

      • Truth Powell

But those NYC best emcees are all in their 40s…….. :/

    • RapItUp

Ross and Nas have actually made some dope tracks together.. One I can think of off top, check out Usual Suspects. Ross do his thing when he need to! That’s back off Deeper than Rap

      • Sorry, but I just can’t check for anything from rosay!

      • Bumpy Johnson

don’t forget nas a fake nigga too thats why he don’t mind.

      • I wouldn’t say that….but I wouldn’t deny it either!

      • Sparky Flinstone

Nas wasn’t NEVER a fake nigga just the youngest flyest nigga to do it and gave yall GAY Z stans a style for u to run wit FOH don’t u fools know haters don’t prosper as far as they could bcuz the hatred blinds them to greater possibilities?

      • Bumpy Johnson

        lol chill .
        1. don’t just assume (in life period)
        2. nas is my fav. rapper alive.
        3. you ever been to NY? are you into NY muisc like deep in it to know people like E money bags, cormega, tragedy khadafi n’em, who grew up few doors down if not a street or 2 down from Nas.
        4. If you don’t just do some research. n you’ll find out why i said he fake.
5.he isn’t RICK ROSS fake, but ur either fake or real n nas’s history wit niggas doesn’t make the cut.

  • Clayton Bigsby

Best new rapper from the South is Jay Electronica… period.
I don’t care if he never releases another record, he is by far the best from there.

    • AK

New rapper??? i been known about him for like 10 years and he is 40 years old, and curren$y got a lot more better records for New Orleans alone

      • Clayton Bigsby

I don’t care if Jay is 65 years old, he is the best new raper from the South and by ‘new’ I meant from the new breed.
Curren$y is not on Jay’s level and you know it. I wouldn’t even put Curren$y along Joey Bada$$.

      • AK

you trippin spitta would put joey to shame, and jay elec was hot from 08-10 ever since hes been subpar ( no one even remembers him after kendrick killed him on control ) and spitta has been putting out classics for damn near 8 years now no let up

      • Savimbi

Whoa there buddy slow down…I fux with currensy but he is nowhere near JB lyrically…and my mans is right lyrically wise, nobody in the South is touching Jay Electronica

      • Clayton Bigsby

        *claps with much vigor!

Edit: mental his first joint was in 1993…

      • Dayum! 93?
I didn’t know he’s been putting it down that long!

Honestly, even though he isn’t as big of a name, he deserves to be in the Top 5.

      • water_ur_seeds

Yeah surprised me to haha yo I forgot Celph Titled needs to be on the list to!

    • Sinbk Legend

      can’t forget stat quo

I was thinking Stat, but he hasnt really got enough material, especially good material to be on the list imo… He has the potential though…

    • stealth

K rink been rappin since the early 90’s. He is in his forties far from being new

  • Rapist on BAIL

The South is garbage! I do like J.Cole (if you consider him South) and Curren$y. But thats about it as far as new guys. Of course Ludacris, Chamillionaire, UGK, T.I., and Officer Ricky got spit game.

    • Sinbk Legend

      lmao this NlGGA said chamillionaire

  • Jonathan Smart

If you don’t have Little Brother (especially Phonte) on/in your list, you’re dumb and should switch to a different genre of music. They shaped the hottest rappers out.
