Aaron McGruder Releases Statement On Departure From “The Boondocks”

(AllHipHop News) Fans of the animated program The Boondocks were excited to find out the show was returning for a fourth season this year, but they were also puzzled when word got out that the series’ creator Aaron McGruder was not involved in the making of the latest installment.

McGruder addressed his departure from The Boondocks in a statement posted on the show’s Facebook page. He wrote:

As the world now knows, The Boondocks will be returning for a fourth season, but I will not be returning with it. I’d like to extend my gratitude to Sony and Adult Swim for three great seasons.

I created The Boondocks two decades ago in college, did the daily comic for six years, and was showrunner on the animated series for the first three seasons. The Boondocks pretty much represents my life’s work to this point. Huey, Riley, and Granddad are not just property to me. They are my fictional blood relatives. Nothing is more painful than to leave them behind.

To quote a great white man, “Hollywood is a business”. And to quote another great white man, “Don’t hold grudges”.

What has never been lost on me is the enormous responsibility that came with The Boondocks – particularly the television show and it’s relatively young audience. It was important to offend, but equally important to offend for the right reasons. For three seasons I personally navigated this show through the minefields of controversy. It was not perfect. And it definitely was not quick. But it was always done with a keen sense of duty, history, culture, and love. Anything less would have been simply unacceptable.

As for me, I’m finally putting a life of controversy and troublemaking behind me with my upcoming Adult Swim show, BLACK JESUS.

The Boondocks season four begins April 21 on Adult Swim.

I can see why you’d think that, based on his statements. I just hope that’s the truth, and I wonder who’s taking the reigns? I hope not the dude who does Family Guy. I don’t like that cats controversy/humor. Some of the jokes I found offensive, I do realize I’m being biased because of the hue of the person behind the jokes. Idk, it seems Boondocks was thought provoking for those of us who are smart enough to see it that way. Which was the way he meant it! A good laugh with a dose of reality.

If Seth MacFarlane EVER lays one drop of sweat on The Boondocks (which I don’t believe even Aaron would allow) the series and the legacy would be ruined forever

God is in the details. I really don’t see The Boondocks being what it was WITHOUT Aaron. The subtle mix of modern and historical references made this show iconic to me, and I am disgusted by how coonish this 4th season could be without him. I digress though… Can’t wait to see Black Jesus. Loved it when it was on youtube.

Probably had the freedom to do and direct the show as he pleased in the beginning, and now those shirt and ties are telling him, “no do it this way” or “naw were not going to do this, to controversial”. Once Aaron lost creative FULL creative control i’m sure he bounced.

That’s what I got from “To quote a great white man, “Hollywood is a business”. And to quote another great white man, “Don’t hold grudges”.

That’s exactly what I got from those comments. When Corporate America smells a hit and potential mass exposure, they try to flip you. I’m pretty sure the show might have some dumb stuff now. But I’ll check the first episode before I permanently disconnect.

Agreed, which is nothing unusual, I was surprised they didn’t water it down after the 2nd season, once it had it cult following. If the 4th is corny, at least we still got 3 good seasons as memories. It still sucks though, I was hoping the show would at least run a quarter the years family guy did.

I think Aaron has made it clear that since he has nothing to do with the new series if the direction they take it in is not a good one he has no blame on him. People will write it off as some corporate bs and we’ll accept whatever he comes up with next. On the other hand if the next season come out as good as the previous 3 he can bask in the glory of creating something that continues a legacy while he grows his reputation elsewhere doing something else. We’l’l wait and see how it pans out. Good luck to him either way.

Dear BLACK artists…..STOP giving up your work, music, creativity etc to the White Man….Arron u should have kept your show…to say its not yours sound like a white publicist put that bs out there and then to hold the oppressors nuts a lil more by adding quotes from white man u think is great goes against everything Huey Freeman stood for….everytime blacks create something…we always give it away and in turn…we never create wealth …he should have kept his show or moved to the Revolt networks with Diddy…time for brothers to work together in business…too many times I hear, they won’t greenlight my movie or shows because its no white hero smh or kanye saying he need white clothing designers to make it big .. stop begging, depending, and asking when your People are all around u….let that digest

What else is he going to say & do brother? Take it to the own network? Maybe puffs new tv channel? Nah. All three are being run either by Jews or whites. Until we completely endorse ourselves as a ppl and become self contained, things like this will always happen.

You think white are interested in giving him a show in the first place? Learn to put blame on the correct people,i.e jews.

Hmm…. What I heard was this: Aaron was the showrunner but comedian Rodney Barnes was responsible for most of the writing of the first 3 seasons and eventually became the executive producer. Aaron and Rodney had a falling out after season 3 and Aaron couldn’t handle the workload by himself, so he sold the show to cartoon network. Not sure if it’s true or not, but that’s what I heard.

No Aaron No Me…I won’t watch….Somehow the entertainment industry wants our essence and dollars without….Example: BET, Essence,Hip Hop Dance, R&B top artist, etc..

I hope this doesn’t take a turn for the worst like The Game did or where Chappelle Show was going to go if he had came back…
