“I’m a producer on a Mac Dre biopic,” Chaney revealed on DMV Spotlight with Mr. Peter Parker. “It’s a two picture film deal about Mac Dre, his life, his music, how he affected the culture of Hip Hop and some of the artists.”

Chaney will also star as Dre’s friend Curtis “Kilo Curt” Nelson, and he says four cast members from The Wire are part of the production as well. While Chaney could not give up who those particular actors are, he does add that Mac Dre’s mother, Wanda Salvatto, has endorsed the project.

Mac Dre (born Andre Hicks) was killed in 2004. He was 34 years old.

If they’re going to do a movie about TIP then they have to do it right! I wonder if Diggs and Romper Room will be featured.

    • MrNoName2K

    Bay Shit!!

  • andone

this is cool and all but im really waitin on that 2PAC movie… long overdue!

    • dehova

I was thinking that myself and then thought I’d find a film about Suge more interesting. I just can’t see them doing a Pac film justice. Mac Dre, in all honesty I only know what I saw on American Gangster

      • andone

good points but the thing is suge is still alive and we already have a B.I.G film(which was also overdue and mediocre)… this has my vote jus like the NWA flick but i think more ppl would agree that PAC’S is anticipated the most?

      • dehova

Well, what you said about the Biggie movie is kind of why I’m apprehensive about any Pac film. Could they do it justice?
I think there are loads of stories to be told but I think with the icons…. boy, I dunno!
As for Suge 50 and Em both did films so I see no reason a Suge film shouldn’t come out, especially with former associates saying he’s a rat now

No disrespect to Mac Dre or his memory but if a movie about Nelson Mandela flopped what chance does this have?

    • brotha_man

you read books on mandela by mandela…u watch movies on mac dre. movies wont do mandela justice….words are more powerful. imo. long walk to freedom, conversations with myself, and the struggle is my life are three of the best books by mandela

      • dehova

Especially a movie where you’re expected to believe one of the most iconic figures of our times was Stringer Bell

      • KingsCountyCrooklyn

he shook off the Bell character a few movie scripts back and even in the stringer role he did play as the educated/ intelligent individual.

      • Montezuma1

I guess my point is the targeted market is even smaller than the one Mandela had and purely from a cinematic perspective certain themes do better and are promoted better when it comes to “urban” content. A slave movie for instance with racial violence and sexual subjugation will be better received by all than one promoting a strong black male. Tyler Perry does great because his character is completely emasculated. I was going deeper than what you touched upon. Audiences are conditioned for a certain narrative when it comes to black people. Mandela’s tale of self determination didn’t fit and I doubt a film about Mac Dre will either.

cant knock it til you see it son…

      • Montezuma1

Didn’t knock it. Just offered an opinion to provoke thought.

      • ZAbutler

I completely get what you’re saying. I mean, nobody watched The Wire even though it’s universally considered the greatest TV show ever. In fact, the highest rated season by far was season 2, when the location shifted to mostly white characters.

That said… a film on Mac Dre and the Romper Room has a lot going for it that a Mandella film doesn’t. I don’t think a mainstream audience wants to see a film about self determination, black or white. A heist film with sick beats? Yeah, that sounds like a nice way to spend an afternoon.

      • Montezuma1

Agreed. Now how much money did they score? Will it be impressive to more than a niche market? Next, How many people bought his music? Was his a niche market? I’m speaking solely from a filmmakers perspective. How many potential viewers based upon the premise you provided?

      • $38035240

Listen to the song that tells Mac Dre’s and his crews life..
        “Rompaughraphy – J-Diggs”
And tell me that story is not summary of a movie….
“up and coming Rapper about to reach stardom who is somewhat connected by his childhood friends who rob banks.
goes to jail for the bank robberys that his friends did, when he could of told on his friends and been sent free.. He records the first album ever from prison by using the phone and sends shots at the detectives and the informant that put him in jail… Upon his release he has no money but local rappers help him to fund and release his first album after prison that would take the region by storm and reach Billboards Top 200 even though it was a independent album.. when his friends are released from prison he signs them to his label and takes them out of a life of crime even though they were the ones who basically sent him to prison… he is bout to blow when he is murdered.. and in his death rappers copy his style and create a sub genre and lifestyle (Hyphy)” – Sounds like a good movie to me

      • Montezuma1

I appreciate Mac Dre’s story but the purpose of making a movie from the investor’s perspective is to make money. You make money by making a film with MASS appeal. Mac Dre’s story is more compelling than Eminem’s but the appeal is much smaller. In no way am I devaluing the man or his journey. I’m speaking to why some films work and some don’t. Not trying to be a film critic at all just analyzing the business side for my own personal reasons.

Feeling myself still my track !

  • Brick Soulja

It’s a shame Dre had to do prison time, because he wouldn’t tell on his friends. He was a real man of respect and loyalty. I hope that his real murderer eventually gets what she deserves.

    • C.Berry Latina and PROUD

      his murderer did get popped

      • Brick Soulja

That rapper from K.C. that Mac Minister set up in Nevada didn’t murder Dre. It’s too many people on both sides that are saying otherwise. It was a case of a rush to judgement.

      • $38035240

Dre was with a KC dude that them niggas was trying to hit.. but ended up hitting Dre instead… word is the niggas responsible got it… and I aint talkin bout Fat Tone

  • SlapAddict1986

i was not expecting this, but its gon be sweet! they gotta show the Romper Room bank robberies, side shows, the beef between Hillside and Crestside, and his death and legacy in the independent game…TIP!!
