Tupac Broadway Musical To Close After Just 6 Weeks

(AllHipHop News) Holler If Ya Hear Me was bringing Hip Hop to Broadway, but according to reports the musical has not been bringing audience members to the seats. As a result, the 2Pac-inspired show will be shut down after only six weeks.

“I was unable to sustain this production longer in order to give it time to bloom on Broadway,” said lead producer Eric L. Gold in a statement.

The play centered around the music and lyrics of rap icon Tupac Shakur. Holler If Ya Hear Me starred accomplished spoken word artist and musician Saul Williams, and was directed by Kenny Leon (A Raisin In The Sun).

The New York Times referred to Holler as “one of the worst-selling musicals in recent years.” Last week the show only managed to occupy 45% of the seats at the Palace Theatre. The production was never able to bring in more that $175,000 a week in gross revenues. The critical response to Holler was also lukewarm.

“My hope is that a production of this caliber, powerful in its story-telling, filled with great performances and exciting contemporary dance and music will eventually receive the recognition it deserves,” added Gold. “Tupac’s urgent socially important insights and the audiences’ nightly rousing standing ovations deserve to be experienced by the world.”

Understandable… It was originally meant to be musical ABOUT Tupac, but when Afeni got the movie going she didn’t wanna take away from that so they had to make another story… And it got rather lackluster reviews as well and it surely didn’t help that Saul Williams who played the lead said that Tupac wasn’t a very good rapper, meanwhile the cast all struggled to rap his lyrics with any conviction (according to reviews and clips I’ve seen which looks like a schoolplay)…

  • Let’s get real here:::I went to see the show last week and let’s just say it wasn’t a full house::Black folks don’t go to see Broadway shows…White folks don’t support Tupac like that so there you have it…….I am disappointed though because as much as the Hip-Hop community worship Tupac, you would think that this would have been the biggest turn out ever…But once again it only goes to show that Hip-Hop fans are all talk and no action. #justsaying
