Richard Pryor Jr: Nick Cannon Changed My Mind On Him Playing My Father

(AllHipHop News) With the world being in the year 2014 that means that children of deceased legends from the 70’s and 80’s are now grown and able to portray their parents in biopics. According to Richard Pryor’s son, he has been so impressed by Nick Cannon’s dedication to playing his father in an upcoming biopic that he has changed his mind on the rapper/actor.

Pryor Jr initially did not believe Cannon would be able to adequately capture his father on screen for the upcoming Lee Daniels biopic about his deceased father. However, in a recent interview with Daily Mail, the son of one of the greatest comedians of all time stated that

He did the small thing of using his left hand instead of his right hand, he picked up smoking to try and emulate my dad, he’s let his hair grow out. He’s looking into who my dad really was, looking into his childhood, who he was raised by and around, and he is interested in talking to me about who my dad was.

Cannon has not officially been named the lead actor on the as-of-yet untitled Richard Pryor biopic. Pryor’s work is under the control of his widow, Jennifer Lee Pryor, a fact that causes concern for Pryor Jr:

She is going to portray herself as angelic when it was the opposite,’ he continued. ‘She’s not a nice lady…My dad’s money took care of him; they didn’t even live in the same home.

Pryor Jr has sent requests to be involved in the process of the film’s production to Jennifer Lee Pryor’s attorneys.

I think he would do a good job

    Biopic after biopic after biopic.

    • whatupdoe

Right. Seems that the only movies that Hollywood excepts about blacks are f’n biopics…. Anyways, Nick Cannon is too corny to play Pryor although it’s a trip how much they resemble in those pics.

      • Arrie Mental Woodard

naw you forget the cliched movies of “white people hate negroes until negroes join the local school sports team (pick a sport) and now we al live in harmony” smh…. i’d rather have biopics instead of that sports shit as if thats all we can do is play sports

      • whatupdoe

Make no mistake, Richard Pryor was a brilliant comedian, however he was an entertainer. That’s whats so annoying about all of these biopics. Blacks are pigeonholed as entertainers. The mainstream audience is very comfortable with the stereotype. We need a true reflection which is variety.

      • Arrie Mental Woodard

i dont really like either and thats why i dont rush out to see “black” movies because you only get stereotypical roles. period. im sick of it!!!!

  • KingsCountyCrooklyn

nick should be able to to play Pryor if he lands the part, hopefully it is a well written script. to see him play the the part as the original Rick Ross would be a harder test of his acting skills.

  • diggdoug

do it right or don’t touch it.

  • andone

I mean who else was gonna be able to play and still even slightly resemble richie???

    • Arrie Mental Woodard

Mike Epps until a conflict with Richards wife put a wrench in the plans.

      • andone

dont believe epps ever had a serious role nor do I think hes fully capable of portraying one???

  • Hephaestus1

Can’t lie, he does look a bit like Rich.

Nick has really come a long way in recent years, but I’m still not 100% on his acting capabilities.

    We’ll see what happens.

  • John Q. Public

“jo jo dancer your life is calling”… if yall haven’t seen it you need to. Pryor already did his own biopic

    • El Dogga

      That’s what I was thinking…..

    • Immortal

Another money chase by greedy people. As with all these other biopics

  • Jonathan Cephas

I thought Mike Epps was gone play him..

    • John Q. Public

he should. Epps is actually a really good dramatic actor

      • barbaracbell

        you filthy whore.

      • andone

        dramatic actor?

      • John Q. Public

yea I just watched that movie “Repentance” starring Forrest Whitaker & Anthony Mackie and Epps played a straight character with no comedic role and was the best actor in the movie.
He played a straight part in the movie “Sparkle” too. My girl was watching it not me but the one part I saw he was coked and out beating his girls ass. Played that role well from what I saw.

      • andone

ok was unaware of this might have to check it out, thanks for the drop.

    • Arrie Mental Woodard

where you been???? Richard Pryor’s wife has been shitting on Mike Epps in public for the last 2 years…. she even called him a Bitch Ass Ninja… look it up, she has been going in on Mike!

      • John Q. Public

        didn’t know that… is this wife #9 or #10?

Pryor basically married every girlfriend he ever had

      • Arrie Mental Woodard

lmao… hell yeah he did.. i think he even married once twice! im not sure what number she is, lol, but her name is Jennifer then Richard Pryors daughter was talking shit about Eppsalso… i dont know what he did but i think they wanted to rough dude up hahaha

  • Reazonero

He lookin like him a bit. He even got that blank coke stare . No disrespect to Richard Pryor though.

  • water_ur_seeds

Nick does look like him there, and the fact he is also a comedian is a plus as he has that outgoing personalty/charisma.

    • jon dubock

      Nick Cannon is a comedian????…..

      • water_ur_seeds

        Apparently so…

  • Richard was waaaaaaay too funny for a cornball to play him. In that respect Cannon got a lot of work to do. I don’t dislike nick I just think he’s corny as hell at times.

    • tbone2

will smith used to be corney too.

    • Nick is a good actor though.
      (Corny comedian….but a good actor. )

  • therealjjohnson

I have no clue why people hate Nick Cannon so much. He is a good actor. I saw a film that he played in call “The Killing Room” that totally changed my outlook on him as an actor. It was not a comedy at all, but a dark kinda grizzly movie. Take a watch and you might change your mind as well. Good movie too.

    • andone

thing is nick kinda brought it on himself… likable person and character jus not always respected… thats the prob here I guess?

    • Bulli$hPride

Nick is dope primarily because I thought he was corny. Who knew corny is what Holywood wanted from us. Looking past that my dude looks like Pryor and I believe he will be hard to turn down. Epps doesn’t work as hard or smart as Cannon.
As we grow up our definition of “real” changes. Same people that diss Nick respect a Gucci, Keef, or Jim Jones smh !

    • andone

speech is key as well, good point

  • i’mreloaded!

Damn. Nick might just be able to do it. Don’t $hit on me but I can see Brandon T. Jackson playin dat role too.

    • Jake Zero

Here is a pile of sh1t in your face for your last suggestion. Please open your mouth as I mush it in!

      • i’mreloaded!

        Nigga, go die somewhere.

      • Jake Zero

Have you swallowed the sh!t yet brother? How’d it taste? I ate peanut butter before I crapped in your mouth. You might need some Wonder Bread.

  • GMF357

Even if Nick did play him, it would seem lackluster because ppl think of better actors to play Rich. Its like Chadwick (dude fro 42) playing James brown. It looks good but we know Damn well Eddie Murphy shoulda played him. it shoulda been more serious and rated R.
Simply put, if Mike Epps didn’t do Rich then Marlon Wayans shoulda got the role. He was supposed to play Rich when Mike wasn’t.
And actually Mike Epps is playing Rich in the Nina Simone bio

I just don’t like the whole persona of what Nick Cannon has become but I will say this; When I did not know who he was, I was bowled over by his brilliance in Charles Stone III’s DRUMLINE.

I think he can pull it off, I’m just unsure whether I will be able to see past his Wilin’Out persona.

    Fingers crossed.
