First it was Kreayshawn, Then it was Trinidad James, next it will be Bobby Shmurda. Stop signing rappers based off of viral videos, and sign them based off of actual talent.

    • Ryan Cole

These signings are agenda-based. Def Jam knew he wasn’t gonna be shit outside of “All Gold Everything”, but they saw how little talent he had and how much of a stereotype he portrayed. It worked.

    • Immortal

How DARE you make sense. That’s just too damn much to ask for in the recording industry these days.

      Real shit bruh

I really thought he woulda come with a decent album at least

  • Poseidon

….No surprise there. He pretty much shamed his self with the way he worded that tweet though. Silence would’ve been golden.

  • TruthSerum

Def Jam realized All Gold Everything was the peak of his career, they milked it for what they could get and sent him back down to the minors.

They should just stop signing rappers to album deals and do singles deals with them. The album format is dead on a business level, we in August already and not one rap record has gone gold yet this year. Even Iggy, with the biggest song of the summer and a few other hits is still paused at around 250K. I’d sign an artist for their single and let them release the album on their own. The single all anybody gonna spend money on.

    • Poseidon

He didn’t make anything. That 2 mil was recouped by Def Jam for promo/studio. He’s putting the tissue paper back in the J’s and wiping them down as we speak, and heading back to Foot Locker with a pocket full of receipts. Dude’s broke.

  • Dointer

I love reading this…This gives more evidence that the early 2000’s was the last era of real MCS. How? we are still talking about Cassidy, Juelz Santana, Grafh, Fabolous, Jeezy, Papoose, Saigon, Jada, Little Brother,State Property,G Unit, JR Writer. Even if it is negative or positive, they left an impression……….. These Mfuckas today with hype are so easily forgotten, they rely on nothing but an instant song…. Whereas artists prior to that, had to freestyle, battle, make songs by the hundred (consistantly) to impress us……

    • Ryan Cole

You mentioned real MCs and Juelz in the same sentence?

      • Dointer

Yes I did (as you can clearly see). The Back Like Cooked Crack series was dope, he was original, he had his own style and swagger.

      • Ryan Cole

It must’ve been the beats telling you that, because Juelz can’t rap for shit. He’s like NY Wayne, which isn’t a good thing.

      • Dointer

No it wasnt the beats telling me that. I myself thought/think that Juelz was a creative rapper. Good for you for thinking otherwise….Im not here to argue back and forth.

      • Fosho3528

You’re late by about 5 years my dude. 1992-1997 was the golden era. It kicked off with The Chronic and ended around Wu Tang Forever. JR Writer?? Cmon now youngster.

      • Immortal

Nah come on youngblood….1979-199(7?) would be the golden years. You have the foundations of Hip Hop, establishment of the four fundaments, and the time it took for Hip Hop to make it into the mainstream. Now during this time, what are known as “rappers” or “crappers” depending on how you look at them took over the scene, began the “manufactured” rapper (never heard of an Industry made MC have you?). I would say this started in the early 2000’s but left a grey area where the MC’s were looking at the “Crappers” and wondering where did my hard work go? And some were struggling to find their way into the new social conscious (Hammer anyone?).

      • Dointer

Thank you, thats a bigger picture of the point I am getting at.

      • Hector G

dude was obviously mentioning rappers from an era he’s familiar with. the nyc rappers from the 2000’s are dope too and younger people identify with them more. Still, as far as I am concerned when you look at the talent that is out there today, it makes the 2000’s look like a golden era of hip-hop also.

      • ghettogov

Hell yeah at least niggas was still tryna spit

      • Dointer

I never said it was a “golden era”, you are missing my point completely. I am saying it was the last era where people were putting energy and effort into being lyricists.

      • Hector G

i’m disagreeing bud, this thread is about trinidad james’s dumb ass. When you compare juelz to trinidad james…….juelz comes out looking like rakim so if you wanna hate on dip set or nyc then that is your personal opinion.

      • Ryan Cole

I loved Dipset and I’m from Brooklyn. Juelz and Jones can’t rap. Cam, Hell Rell, 40, and JR were nice.

    • Godless Heathen

lol grafh g unit jr writer and juelz mcs? nah theyre rappers. garbage rappers…not everything from nyc is hot

      • Dointer

Grafh is probably one of the most underrated rappers in my books. He has fallen off major recently though.

  • Coast2Coast

Ran off @ the mouth too much. He probably still dont get it. smh…His days were numbered from the rip.

  • I guess Trinidad be keeping it a hunnit tho gotta give em that he say what he want but that music ain’t saying sht….good luck on whatever else it is he does.

    • Hector G

ya keeping it a hunnit % broke lolol…..Again, kids working at mcdonalds deserve more money than this clown. I hope he has good luck too, joining the “regular people” who will laugh at him till the end of time cause you had an ignorant song called all gold everything and now you aint got $hi+ lololol

      • Oh u know niggaz was already prolly clowning em anyway…he remind me of one of them dudes that niggaz just get on they ass every time they come round…he Def gon be on vh1 one hitter quitters…

  • Ryan Cole

Well played, Def Jam. Y’all knew James was trash, but pumped money into his career so that he could spread ignorance and put his cooning ass on stage for the world to see. What’s funny is that Sha Money is the one that got him signed. Same dude responsible for Bobby Shmurda getting a deal. Who’s side is he on? No wonder 50 hates this guy now.

  • JimJames29

  • a$$holebynature

Def Jam did TJ a favor, no one want to be on Def Jam anyway.

    • Hector G

No, see, trinidad james was on def jam and they DROPPED him lolololol ya keep acting like trinidad james is a bigger deal than def jam smh. That is exactly what NOT to gather from this article. def jams story will continue, trinidad james story was short, sucked really bad and is already over.

  • tr3sdaddy

This is shocking…………said no one on Earth

  • Ike’s Mood

jimmy gon take his money from keef too, watch…

  • bigdoe6

No respect for Sha Money signing this clown and Bobby Shmurda. Sha Money is signing Youtube rappers. Whatever happened to actually going out and finding that real talent in the city streets. Overall it makes Sha Money looks bad. How do he go from signing 50cent who went to become a global artist to signing these Instagram rappers who are here today and go tomorrow. Smh.

    • Word7

The difference is 50 was already 50.. Sha Money just had his back when beef was popping off.. 50 been grinding for years these dudes Trinidad and Shmurda grind was like a year them dudes said it themselves on interviews. When a cat is hungry and put in the necessary ground work then maybe they might succeed. There is a bunch of cats everywhere with the grind aint get lucky with that internet buzz. Sha Money is actin as if he built 50 when he didn’t.

  • ghettogov

    Say it ain’t so….lmfao

  • Sadat

Why signed to a label anyway. Indie is the way to go. Major labels are so desperate these days.

  • Guest

Honestly, he never needed Def Jam. He could have just stayed indie and made his money. This will probably just set him back.

  • GQ

Who didn’t see this coming? Dude had 2 1/4 songs that buzzed and that popped off. It’s fucced up that Def Jam is no longer that iconic label it once was. Now its all about microwavable artist. One maybe two singles, a promo run, few shows, and its over.

James is a true sneaker head tho, so his best bet is to fully jump into that world and get paid. Blogs, online mag, something.

Or, get with a washed up industry chick and join Love & Hip Hop.

Damn! its cold world indeed, a record label sign you for $2mil and drop you without waiting for you to drop an album or at least recoup their cash, that shit sounds like money laundering. Sha Money might be washing that left over Jimmy Henchmen cash from his counter to counter express. Otherwise this shit don’t make sense at all.

  • JimJames29

He’s so wack he didn’t even have a verse on the remix to his own hit song

I mean who is really SHOCKED?

Another case of an artist who should have stayed independent while his song was buzzing like Chief Keef (who had even more of a buzz). Labels threw them a few millions and now their careers are in limbo

  • Mack

    Word to French Montana.

  • The first thing I would have did with 2 million is got my teeth fixed…off top.

  • pauleyPee

I’m a serious hip-hop/urban music fan. With that said, “All Gold Everything” was maaaaaaajor. Everything about it captured the defining movement within the culture at that time. Let’s see what the next move is for my dude.

    • Celz

Shyt was major trash.. Hot garbage on sale.. Dude had a dope beat, a solid hook, mediocre flow, trash lyrics, and the image of a broke pimp from a 90s sitcom… That shyt ain’t music man.. What was he expressing? How he’s only kinda broke and spent it all on gold so now he’s broke again?

      • ghettogov

Even the beat was taken from too short and just slowed down…

      That shit was garbage

What a shock that another gimmick fake ass pop rapper looses his contract after a major label milks him dry. I can’t believe all that gold didn’t really mean he’s a dope MC straight off the streets selling crack and killing bitches with this gay leopard panties, CRAZY!!!! Now people who read this equally whack website will pretend like they never liked him when they really did just because they were told he’s popular for a minute an a half and heard him on the radio every 10 minutes.
