Today is the 17 year anniversary of the release of The Miseducation of Lauryn HillSeveral esteemed Hip-Hop and R & B icons have exclusively collaborated with AllHipHop in this mini-documentary to reflect on how she influenced the genre. From being described as a creative insomniac by Jerry Wonda, to Ed Lover praising her power to personally change the trajectory and perception of female MCs and their material, the inherent respect for Ms. Lauryn Hill is palpable.

Later, she receives praise for caressing the mic with “the perspective of a woman,” while Erick Sermon, Musiq Soulchild, Redman, and J. Period collectively reminisce with authentic anecdotes. As a whole, these stories include both her personal and her professional impact on themselves and on music. Check out the entire video and discover why L. Boogie is credited with revolutionizing music and “giving birth to Drake.”

Which track from The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is the best?

  • hoeyuno

Lauren was ill on the mic…T’Nah Apex could be on that Lauren level Emceeing and Singing in a couple years…..Check “Sweetest thing” with T’Nah and Buckshot.

  • hoeyuno

Why Eric and Reggie wearin suites????

  • Sgt. H. Jennings

Lauren Hill was nice on the mic. No doubt but let’s be very clear here, she is not the greatest female mc to grace the mic. GTFOH. I too liked her in the Fugees and her classic album TMOLH but to me she’s just another talented artist but the greatest female mc ever? Absolutely not…. Top 10 maybe but #1, HELL NO!!

    • Dee

      Well who is #1?

      • Sgt. H. Jennings

I agree, Lauren Hill is dope. Dope as hell to be quite honest there. But she’s not #1 on my list. It’s Latifah…. Not trying to discredit L. Hill because she was at the top of her game when she graced us with her presence. In my opinion Latifah is #1. But yes, Lauren Hill is def in the discussion. I don’t want to come off as disrespecting because I value hip-hop for more than what we are seeing today. Like many of you I know the genre is a lot deeper and substance driven than what’s out today. Not knocking these cats of today but I’m sure you catch my drift. LH is dope but Latifah is #1 to me but the argument is there when it comes to Lauren Hill, Nicki Minaj and MC Lyte.

    • pauleyPee

MC Lyte was dope as fu**. Lauryn didn’t put in enough records, I’m just saying. Even though we all know that her album is the single greatest album a woman has released in hip-hop. She earned that… But MC Lyte was the business and she was pure hip-hop.

  • water_ur_seeds

She is defo the greatest IMO, when she was at her prime that is, ‘my rhymes are heavy, like the mind of Sister Betty’ :-O she dropped so many gems and GOAT verses…

I love Jean Grae, Lyte and numerous other women MC”s, but Lauryn in her prime is the greatest, but its down to personal opinion…

  • Mrs. Davis804

Damn right she is! A real woman’s perspective was projected, not a stereotype or gimmick. Her album is the epitomy of balance.

  • Montezuma1

I agree. Purists will point to MC Lyte. Lyte was dope but Lauryn is in a class by herself. Hate the way things went after her stardom though but salute to her nonetheless and a big F U C K you to Wyclef.

    Greatest Female Hip-Hop Artist!”…HELL NO.NOT EVEN CLOSE#KILLNYRAP

    • Sinbk Legend

This nigga mad bcuz there is no legendary rapper of any caliber where he from

  • Dj

She’s the GOAT. Hands down. Lyrically better than all female MCs (though Rah Digga, Lyte and Rapsody are super nice), vocally unmatched and 2 classic albums that transcended the culture? Yeah, its her. Don’t know a female rapper who has done what she did. And with her clothes on.

  • Anthony Mason

On the score she was so dope….she outshined them scrubs….

  • xxthoughtxx

she had a dope album, but i think queen latifah gave more to hiphop, Queen latifah has been in the game since the late 80s, movies, tv shows, albums, talk shows… lauren hill has been dormant for the past 17 years, had a exceptional album, o yea she birthed all these singing rap dudes too

  • Tohn

Just listen to Manifest off The Score album, if you want to question her lyrical prowess. One of my favorite verses ever. Wish she had kept it together long enough to put out a worthy follow up to Miseducation. I’d probably still give the female GOAT to Lyte.
