Tidal Streaming Service Reaches One Million Subscribers

(AllHipHop News) Tidal has had some rocky moments this year, but the streaming service managed to continue to grow. The company’s part owner, Jay Z, announced Tidal has now reached one million subscribers.

It was revealed in January that Jay put in a $56 million bid to purchase Tidal from Schibsted. At the time, the service reportedly had around 530,000 subscribers. Tidal was relaunched in March with several high-profile artists owners such as Beyoncé, Rihanna, Kanye West, Alicia Keys, Nicki Minaj, J. Cole, and Usher.

The platform offered exclusive content such as music/video premieres and live streams of concerts by Jay, Young Jeezy, and Lil Wayne. Tidal also provided the exclusive broadcast of the Made In America festival which featured performances by Beyoncé, The Weeknd, Future, J. Cole, Meek Mill, and more.

“Men lie, women lie, numbers don’t”. Lol sorry, couldn’t help it

      • Nemo hos

Just like when artists buy their own albums to skyrocket sales…theory used

      • RapItUp

Man it’s one thing to make your own one time purchase.. to be out here copping subscriptions seems like a reach though bruhh!!

      • Nemo hos

        Hell yea..you ain’t never lied…hahaha

      • lol. but men and women do lie about numbers, so there’s that. :p

      • RapItUp

        Lol I’ll take that

    • Good Dick, M.A.A.D Pussy

JAY’s always winning!! just accept that!!

      • lol. jay is def a winner, but let’s not forget Armadale.. still. i def rock with hov, so don’t get me wrong, I just don’t think Tidal was the kind of tech he should have gotten behind. He needed to find something that actually disrupted. either way, i always wish him well. i wish anyone that came from the same streets and background as me the same. 🙂

  • Psyer

S/O 2 him. I think they only had about 35k subscribers when it was bought.

  • BigDayOne

Spotify has 40 million paying subscribers
Apple Music has 11 million paying subscribers
In the music streaming space I don’t think 1 million subscribers is anything to brag about.
I didn’t see if it was specified if these are 1 million paying subscribers or not

    • RapItUp

They only offer a paid service, for one.. Perhaps before bashing the service you should do some homework. As for comparing to the other streaming services, see previous point. In addition, they came into the game waayyy after spotify and Apple hands out free months upon sign-up of service so I believe their #’s are skewed. Lastly, note they have at least doubled their production, within 2 quarters or so, and any company should celebrate that type of growth. Hi hater! (wow, so early in the AM too! crab!)

    • Brooklyn Stoop

      guess what.
before spotify and apple reached 40 and 11 million…………..they had to reach 1 million.
      shocking aint it

      • Weedras

and apple music got that 11 million by pulling in many who were on the Beats app…

    • Sinbk Legend

Go back to sleep bro….you lost

    • ItGoesDownINtheDM

its a start you actling like they had 40million from day 1 ….. its all a process … the fact that he went from 500k to 1million is displaying growth … whos to say he wont be somewhere in the middle of that 10mill to 40 million subscribers in another year or 2 …..

    • SupaDoopaGhost1

      KILL YOSELF FOOL!!!!!!

    • Good Dick, M.A.A.D Pussy

damn bruh..doesnt make any sense that you get sh!t on like this on a hiphop website! smh Jayz is a real boss!

  • Cyber💂🏾Soljah

Salute to Jay Z, he’s an X Dope man(not dope boy) & music is the new dope game. It’s called the slow grind, in due time his strategy will all make sense.

    • DLOUPO

If jay really felt that then everybody in the dope game knows when u have a new product on the scene u supposed to drop the price and sell 20s for dimes not dimes for 20 and when u get the custys that’s when u jack back up the price

      • Cyber💂🏾Soljah

Men lie, women lie. Number don’t. He double with his numbers either way. The dealers before him are very well established. It’s to early to try and compete with them. All he has to do is make sure his number come back proper. Which at this point they are. When he cover’s more ground then he can focus on the big fish. No different than the way they built The Roc.

      • Yabiggirl

Not exactly, J is pushing “quality” crack lol, when you have quality, your numbers can go up and you can charge more!

      • Yabiggirl

His product isn’t new, its just a better version of what everyone has out there (figuratively speaking, not a definite comparison to youtube, spotify & tidal just to clarify). Jays venture isn’t just about running a new music service, it was more about taking the power away from white owned execs who make billions and giving that power back to the artist, his name alone drew in new subscribers and I think that eventually Tidal will be the number 1 streaming service just from the artist they on their alone.

  • A.P. Millz-CT

I am happy to hear about this.. Is it still $20 a month??

    • Perfect Timing

The price of TIDAL subscriptions purchased from inside the iOS app have gone up. The price of hifi moves from $19.99 a month to $25.99 a month. The non-hifi subscription moves from $9.99 a month to $12.99

Some direct subscriptions from the website still list at

      $9.99 a month (non HIFI)
      $19.99 a month (HIFI)

      • ItGoesDownINtheDM

        lol moves ??

  • Perfect Timing

The More they want to see you Fail, the more motivated you will be to prevail…

  • ItGoesDownINtheDM

good ish im still not apart of the 1 millions subscribers but its aint like i belong to any of the competitors either ……….. just saying that to say it def still has tons of room for growth

  • Keyser Soze

Dope… Glad to see the Big Homie push through and continue to be successful

A perfect example on how the numbers do lie, how many “paid” subscribers tho? Let’s see what happens when the trail period runs out and that 20 dollar bill comes in. Rent, cell, car note, school, kids, food, gym, tidal. Uhmmmm, which 1 can i do without?

    • RapItUp

Bruh.. Please read something.. You have no idea what you’re talking about.. ‘How many paid’, trial subscriptions.. $20.. You know all of that is false, right?

      • DLOUPO

What r u talkn about? When I said trial I met free trial like when u go to tidal it says start ur free trial here and when that fades let’s see who’s left

      • Dark Matters

Even in that instance, they’re still doing better than they were doing before.

In April they told us that they had over three quarters of a million subscribers. They give out 1 month free trial subscriptions. It’s been well over a month since April and they’re now at 1 million subscribers.

So, you can draw two conclusions. One conclusion is that they’re retaining most of those trial subscriptions as paid subsribers and/or a lot more people are trying out tidal than were before.

        Either way, it’s a win.

Ok we know $20 is for hi def still doesn’t change the fact he’s in a saturated market with nothing tangible to offer consumers to pay or switch besides the its better for the artist, right I pass…

  • RapItUp

Reading the comments, some fools actually think tidal basic service is actually $20.. See why tidal gotta fight so hard? Media manipulation and competition is a mug.. Haha.

Just to clarify, no I don’t have tidal. I also don’t stream at all. Like my music on hand at my disposal.. If I decided to stream (can’t see that happening) I’d roc w/ Hov though. For the $10 subscription, not the HI-DEF $20 one.. smh

How many people in this comment section have Tidal? Exactly

    • brotha_man

i use iTunes….but I’m real close to switching to tidal

      • Gap Tooth Bruce

        Same here!

  • Zodiak Killa

I make 91 percent of all my music sales, why would I stream through them for .008 percent when iTunes is paying 9.10 for each one of my albums sold? Zodiak Killa on iTunes.

    • Dark Matters

Your question is a convolution of two different questions.

The first is: Why would I stream my album when I can retail it?
The answer would be, you can do both or one or the other depending on your circumstances. There are consumers who stream but don’t purchase. And there are consumers who only purchase. While some only stream, there are also those who only steal music.

The other is: Of the streaming services why would I choose Tidal over any other service?
The answer is Tidal pays the most royalties.

How many albums do you sell at that margin?

  • Slaughtr

    FCK Tidal

Props to Jay and the team for sticking with it… Tidal is cool actually. The only drawback is the popularity in comparison to Spotify, Apple Music and Pandora. Other than that it’s a dope method that I am ok with saying I too am a subscriber of Tidal. They are all cool. Just as Netflix and Hulu are both cool. It’s all in your personal pref… IMO of cours.e

  • coldPissa

strategy to get the sheep to jump onboard, just throw out a number and they will come a runnin

  • Brindle

“1,000,000 platinum” is a record sales word. When a business gets it’s 1 millionth customer, they don’t say, now McDonalds is platinum. Kinda sounds like hype. No way to tell if this has become good and they’re celebrating a true success or this is still bad and they’re just celebrating the number 1,000,000… 530,000 was unsuccessful which means they only produced an additional 470,000… is that good in the streaming world?? How fast did other streaming companies grow in the same amount of time without all the publicity and big name artist advertisement??
