TDE Is Not A Fan Of The New RIAA Certification Rules

The RIAA felt that including music streaming was the next logical step in the continued evolution of Gold & Platinum Awards to reflect the changing marketplace of music consumption. The new Album Award formula is 1,500 on-demand audio and/or video song streams equals 10 track sales which equals 1 album sale. The RIAA’s Digital Single Award ratio has been updated from 100 on-demand streams equals 1 download to 150 on-demand streams equals 1 download. With the new update Kendrick Lamar’s ‘To Pimp A Butterfly’ was one of the albums to be certified platinum. TDE boss Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith a.k.a. Dangeroo Kipawaa wasn’t too excited about the change as he tweeted,

“No cheat codes 2 platinum… #TDE. We don’t stand behind this @RIAA bs. ole skool rules apply. 1 million albums sold is platinum. until we reach that #, save all the congrats.”

What are your thoughts? Should Anthony and TDE just get with the times?

I don’t agree with this system but it is what it is. if mens really want to stand up, emphasize on the “real” status or come up with a term to acknowledge what we believe “real” platinum is and move with it. IF not stream away sheep, i mean people.

I just found this According to new data from Nielsen/Billboard, 116.1 million album unit sales were clocked up versus 120.9 million in H1 2014.

As MBW’s analysis below shows, CD album sales – which were down 10% in H1 2015 to 56.6 million – claimed 49% of this total album sales market.

Despite digital album sales being down – by less than 1% to 53.7 million – downloads’ share of total album sales grew to 46%.

The growth of vinyl album sales kept on keeping on: the format grew 38.4% to 5.6 million in H1 2015, taking a 5% share of CD/digital/vinyl formats.

If you were to remove vinyl, CD unit sales would have counted for 51% of the total, with digital albums on 49%.

(Important note: this doesn’t count sales on cassette, mini-discs and other very peripheral formats.)

  • Knickfan4life

I think they should actually lower the certifications to 350,000 combined sales that should get you a silver plaque.

  • NotTomFromMySpace

streams shouldnt be counted i feel. niggas have their shit streaming all day lol

  • bluelight74

Embrace technology , understand it, produce it and use it or be left behind. We seem to be unable to understand this simple truism. Evolve and adapt, or die.

  • ebonyhud

I think he has a point only when it comes to free streaming. Free streaming shouldn’t really effect sells. However in any streaming platform in which an artist is getting paid…I feel like it should reflect on their album status.

  • RayStantz

I understand both sides of the coin. Business is always evolving to include new technology. That’s a fact that will not go away but as an artist, when being compared to past greats you want an even playing field. Catch 22…

  • Q.

If nobody’s hitting the mark, they should just abolish Platinum and Gold certs altogether, make the awards suitable to today’s music…Paper and Plastic!
