Rihanna & Drake’s “Work” Hits #1, Sets New Record For Non-Americans

(AllHipHop News) Once again the tandem of Rihanna and Drake hits the pinnacle of the Billboard Hot 100. After ruling the chart with “What’s My Name?” in 2010, Ri Ri and Drizzy land at #1 with “Work.”

“Work” marks Rihanna’s 14th Hot 100 chart topper. The Roc Nation singer now has 14 career #1 songs, moving her into third place alone behind The Beatles (20) and Mariah Carey (18).

Rihanna (born in Barbados) and Drake (born in Canada) also helped set a new record for the number of singles by non-Americans to consecutively maintain the top spot on the Hot 100. This makes the ninth straight non-American act to rule over the chart dating back to August 2015.

The last 9 number one songs were Rihanna & Drake’s “Work,” Justin Bieber’s “Love Yourself,” Zayn’s “Pillow Talk,” Justin Bieber’s “Sorry,” Adele’s “Hello,” The Weeknd’s “The Hills,” The Weeknd’s “Can’t Feel My Face,” Justin Bieber’s “What Do You Mean?,” Omi’s “Cheerleader.” Wiz Khalifa was the last U.S. born artist to have a #1 song with “See You Again” in July 2015.

  • As I said before…. Rihanna is a singles monster. It’s how she sells albums. She’s not a Kanye. Kanye is known for albums. People aren’t checking for a Rihanna album unless she’s got a hot joint on the radio. That’s her formula. But hey, that’s how she makes those album sales so props to her. I doubt we’ll ever see anything innovative or genre breaking from her though.

that’s how EVERY hip hop artist is (new-gen) – the top single is the goal , to be like tyga and wiz for examples , of making long term success outta worthless albums and one hit single several years ago

      • True. That’s the goal for most artists looking to make an income instead of real music. But not too many people have been as consistent as Rihanna. She’s tapped into something. The problem with that is that it becomes only a business and is almost akin to selling out. I have no patience with artists that don’t take risks every now and then.

u dumb nigga kanye is broke

      • He’s not broke. And even if he was, what the f*ck does that have to do with people checking for his album? Pay attention. That’s the reason your dumb ass didn’t graduate high school until you were 28. 😂😂😂

I understand not being able to get along – but I always knew chris brown breaking it off with her was gonnna be a bad Business move (for him)

this generation is trash, this music is horrible compared to what she used to do, and u dumb niggas buying it

I can’t front, this song is fire, an instant club banger. Right in Rihanna’s wheelhouse too–mad Caribbean flavor with her whiny patois and sultry dance moves. LOL …I bet if they had dropped this in the 2Q, she would’ve had the summer on lock, guaranteed. Still might though.

Meanwhile, Drake is like the mayonnaise of music: he’s the “condiment” the industry has come to rely on, but is totally unnecessary to make something good. i.e., “Work” is still the sh!t minus Drake.
