(AllHipHop News) The name “Bill Gates” has become a ubiquitous way to quantify success. Recently, the billion dollar man reacted to learning that he was lyrically referenced in Beyoncé’s “Formation.” Gates was previously unaware of the allusion.

“I hadn’t realized that she did that until somebody in the office actually sent me a copy of the lyrics and I said, ‘Are you serious? This is kind of a strange set of words here,’” he revealed to Wired. “I’m surprised.”

That initial surprise resonates with Gates as a compliment. “I guess it’s nice that people consider me successful,” he says. “I actually haven’t met Beyoncé.” Although, he has yet to meet up with B, he has met her better half.

“I know Jay Z, because when I did some humor right when I was retiring from Microsoft—he was nice about participating in that, and did a great job on that, he reflected. “I guess I should do a Bing search and see if there are more uses of my name that I don’t know about.”

Really.. what’s strange here? Bill Gates is practically the default replacement for ”richest man alive” and similar phrases, and rappers use his name in that context all the time.

      Why not shoutout Aliko Dangote?

      • Dope

Because Bill Gates has been number one of Forbes list for years, and you don’t shoutout number 2 and below in rap. And also because Bill Gates has become a simbol of a billionaire. For some years that guy from Mexico took his spot on to of the list, but nobody knows his name, Bill’s name is just a household name and you shoutout something familiar, not something people have to google to understand.

      • Of course you should do. Make niggaz look shit up. Have some interesting lyrics.

Rap is a competitive game, where everyone brags that they, not someone else, is the best. As such, you can’t be comparing yourself to the third or 52nd person on another list. If you bring up running, you say you’re Usein Bolt, you don’t say the name of the guy who finished third. That’s just how rap is.
Interesting and educational lyrics yes, but people in rap who choose to make an analogy with Bill Gates or something similar, are probably just bragging on that song, not trying to educate anybody.
