Mos Def Re-Enters Court With Scarf After Being Forced To Remove Turban; Facing More Litigation In Late March

(AllHipHop News) Just when you thought that racism and prejudice primarily existed in the United States, we learned today that South Africa is still up to its dirty tricks that we thought ended with apartheid in the mid 1990’s.

In an act of blatant disrespect, today a judge forced former rapper and actor Yasiin Bey to remove a religious garment from his head prior the day’s court proceedings.

Despite the prejudiced act by South African courts, Yasiin Bey (formerly Mos Def) returned to court with a scarf on his head in order to still observe his personal religious beliefs.

While it’s believed Mr. Bey practices Islam, turban-wearing traditions can be found in the Indian Subcontinent, Afghanistan, South Asia, the Arabian Peninsula, North Africa, the Horn of Africa, the Sahel, and parts of the Swahili Coast which encompass many different religions.

The former Black Star rapper has a new court date set in a case that stems from overextending his stay with an expired visa and “aiding and abetting” his family members to overstay their welcome in South Africa where Yasiin Bey has been living since 2013.

“I am currently in Cape Town South Africa and I am being prevented from leaving unjustly, unlawfully and without any logical reason,” Yasiin Bey said in statement back in January on Kanye West’s website.

In addition to aiding and abetting his family to stay illegally in South Africa” Yasiin Bey is charged with trying to use a “world passport” to exit the country on a flight to Ethiopia.

Currently the Brooklyn bred rapper born, Dante Terrell Smith, is out on what amounts to a $300 bail and has a new court date set for March 24th.

Fake: a thing that is not genuine; a forgery or sham.
Muslim: a person who follows the religion of Islam

    Ain’t this some bullshit?

Mos Def is in observance of a legitimate religion by wearing a headpiece signifying that, and they give him shit in court about that?

But old racist Honky ass Hulk Hogan is currently permitted to wear a do-rag in a damn Florida courtroom during his lawsuit about that leaked sex tape no one wants to see. Here’s proof with this photo below.

Now ain’t this some ass backwards shit? I understand head wear is normally banned from courts, but I believe they’re usually lenient with religious headpieces as we’ve seen peeps with Sikhs, turbans, or yarmulkes on their heads enter courts without having to remove them.

If they give Mos Def shit about his Muslim headpiece, they should also give Hogan shit because his shit isn’t for religion, just strictly for his played out ass image and to cover his baldness we’ve known about for decades now.

Who cares? Court is court. I just felt like it was a double standard.

      • cza jones

No it really isn’t. I can’t make a right turn in NYC on a red light. Should i cry double standard? Courts are not the same, laws are not the same, formalities are not the same. Shouldn’t compare the two.

Celebrity Status = money for said city. He use to Live(or still Do) in St Pete, FL,

People leave this country and think that it’s all good. SMH. It’s not. It’s even easier for the government to f*ck you over.

    • Shouldve just have followed regulation abroad.

Only $300 for bail indicates theyre not really trying to get him Id say.

    • Banksy

No actually it is easier. On the basis that you don’t try to show your ass to their system. It sounds like this nigga went out there flexing when he should’ve done what I do. Stay humble, get your money and keep it pushing. I lived in the UK and in Aus. Neither the Police or the Courts knew me because of everything I listed earlier.

He’ll be back to the US once that money run out. I like Mos Def but something ain’t right bout him. Wasn’t he fighting some child support cases before he left?

    • jray

I am in agreement with you. I don’t know about the child suport issue, but I do agree there is something a bit odd and strange about the guy . I don’t know what his situation is and why he is over there and really don’t give a damn enough to follow up on it. However, on the surface, it’s odd to me. He is talented though.

  • Q.

Why are they targeting Mos??? Keep your eyes peeled!

  • Spijo

We all know that the US is the power house. But that doesn’t mean South Africa is just a lawless country where anyone can just do as they please. Mos Def took advantage that he is renowned and that he is from the US. So he thought he will have an easy walk in the park. Where does this world passport originate if I may ask? this guy is taking SA for granted forgetting that SA is a country that has a justice system, irrespective of it being poor or effective. I think he is learning his lesson by the way. He must respect other countries.

  • Anisca

He better recalibrate his meds because there is no way in hell he is in his right mind.
world passport, wearing a turban(I thought he was Muslim) calling it a religious garment itso bull..askin him to respect the law had nothing to do with racism..his Dr. better recalibrate his meds for sure.
