Gene Simmons of Kiss Trashes Rap, Talib Kweli Fires Back

(AllHipHop News) Gene Simmons has been a long critic of Hip-Hop, but now he has stated that he wishes for the complete death of the genre.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, the front man of antiquated rock band Kiss takes aim at rap again.

“I am looking forward to the death of Rap. I’m looking forward to music coming back to lyrics and melody, instead of just talking, “ said the 66-year old. “A song, as far as I’m concerned, is by definition lyric and melody … or just melody.”

Simmons stated he felt rap will cease to exist in about 10 years.

“Rap will die. Next year, 10 years from now, at some point, and then something else will come along. And all that is good and healthy,” he said.

Later in the interview, he seemingly pigeon-holed all rap music into the “gangsta rap” category.

“I don’t have the cultural background to appreciate being a gangster. Of course that’s not what it’s all about, but that’s where it comes from. That’s the heart and soul of it. It came from the streets,” he concluded.

The remarks did not get past emcee Talib Kweli.

“Would it be unfair of me to say I’m looking forward to the death or nah? Chuck Berry shits on Kiss,” the Brooklyn rapper stated.

If rap was gonna die, it already would have. Disco only lasted 10 years. Rap is more than halfway through its fourth decade. I’d think a guy who wore spandex and make-up to get on would be a fan of mainstream rap’s current Young Thug-style incarnation, but go figure

  • The Legendary Troll

old white people been saying this for years. nobody is forcing it down your throat gene. stop confusing young thug with hip hop and maybe you might find art in it.

  • TheAfroRican

Gene Simmons doesn’t even write any of the songs on the KISS catalog so f*ck him and the click he claim.

By the way, a Puerto Rican wrote and arranged a lot of his songs for him.

    • RazaBladeKing

Never knew that, and I don’t doubt it for a second. Yo, on the low, its kinda strange how latinos don’t get their props for their contributions to American music. I got Pun in my top 5 NY mcs all time, and Pitbull (before he got on this dance music trash) in my top 5 FL mcs all time, but most people never think of em when they’re puttin together a list

      • Pitbull an MC now ?

      • RazaBladeKing

Not now, but his first 3 or 4 albums. Specifically, “El Mariel” and “The Boatlift”… if you can speak both english and spanish (or at least understand em both), he was spittin straight heat back then

      • Forgot about his earlier days. Fair enough !

  • Hahahahaha…. This is maaaaaad funny. He’s talking like his sh*t is relevant right now. The last hair band to hit number one was who? When?

Truth be told, they all stole their style from Black folks anyway. We are the originators. He’s just mad that his vitamin D dairy ass can’t make mad money off of that thievery no more.

Hey Gene, here’s a clue. Real sh*t lasts longer than stolen sh*t (which explains why hip hop has outlasted your paint on the face ass crew). The public knows real sh*t. And they also know who steals it. I’m not saying others can’t innovate and participate. Music is for everybody. But rock was stolen. Y’all tried to steal hip hop on some Elvis sh*t by planting Vanilla Ice’s b*tch ass. But even your people who respected it (Eminem) wouldn’t let y’all stealing asses get away with it. Hold this L you lizard tongue ass dummy. Hahahaha….

    • Although the shit he said is wack to the 10th power, KISS is still a legendary band.

A genre vs one band ? Is that even fair to compare ?

Dont know why you had to put race into the equation but at the end of the day all music is derived from the classics…

      • Because Gene Simmons is a known racist and his comments are coming from that same space (classifying all rap as gangsta, in case you didn’t catch that sneak diss). We’re talking about the same b*tch ass dude that gave Donald Sterling support after he got busted for saying that racist sh*t. To the uninformed, his comments seem harmless. But to people in the know, he’s a racist mother*cker that is keeping it racist. That’s why Talib went off. Educate yourself homie.

      • I didn’t know. Thanks !

I think people missing the point. But today, people wouldn’t understand the struggle of musicians by comparing it to technology, ( Scratching, sampling, the using of parts of songs) is not real music, It mimicking sounds of music to get a beat. Every group/artists are in there for a reason. Musicians, vocalists, instruments are the reasons u belong there. PE and NWA, are there for impact, not none of the above. I like PE and NWA, but it’s no way in hell that Janet, Chic (14yrs they been nominated) The Spinners and Chaka Khan. shouldn’t be in there. HipHop needs it’s own Hall of Fame with just HipHop, no other genre. Just RRHOF need to stay true to what it was meant to be. JMO, not dismissing your opinion.

      • yomomma

        bravo you nailed it

    • Drake’s 3rd best Ghostwriter

Vanilla Ice had one hit song. I don’t think that anyone, anywhere, EVER, for even the briefest of moments, thought he was going to steal hip hop. This is a completely irrational statement that can not and will not be substantiated with fact.

Eminem had a successful rap career… about 15 years ago. Almost every single rap artist who anyone cares about since, has been black. If his success was an attempt by white people to steal hip hop it was executed horrifically and with extreme incompetence.

      • Reading is fundamental. Read the Eminem comment and get back to me. You might need some Baush & Lomb solution.

      • Drake’s 3rd best Ghostwriter

I don’t need eye lubricant to read through a bunch of bullshit. You’re not making a whole lot of sense. Some bitter old rocker says some hater shit and you go on a rant about how white people “tried to steal hip hop” but were unsuccessful because, according to you, “people who respected it (Eminem)” wouldn’t allow it to happen. It’s just delusional. According to you, if i’m getting this right, white artists, record companies and corporations eager to capitalize on the enormous success he had and possibly white wash the entire art form would have been able to get away with it but were unable to do so because what, Eminem said no ? Ridiculous.

      • Your White guilt is showing. Tuck that sh*t in. It might get snatched. 😂😂😂

      • Drake’s 3rd best Ghostwriter

I’ll tuck my white guilt in if you try to think things through a little more next time. lol. Your argument just didn’t make sense.

      • To white people, Black thought rarely does. Lol!

      • Drake’s 3rd best Ghostwriter

White people have f*cked up enough. At least blame us for some shit that’s our fault or some shit that is actually a problem. lol

      • Next I’m expecting you to tell me you have one Black friend. 😂😂😂

You’re a funny dude. My position remains unchanged. Appreciate the convo though.

      • Drake’s 3rd best Ghostwriter

That used to be my name on here, haha

        But…but I have BLK friends

      • No diss to you but I don’t think you thought about what you just did. Hahaha….I know you have your troll hat on but I’m speaking about your wording. 😂😂😂. Look at it dude…. And think…. That sh*t is gay as hell. Hahahahahaha

This article here and the comments together is America in a nutshell

  • Far as I’m concerned, Gene Simmons just mad cause nobody been checkin for him since Kiss fell off…

  • since when does rap not have lyrics and melodies?? lol someone please put this senile old man to sleep already

  • DrakeDoesn’tWrite

Some old white rocker does this once a year. I bet their kids like rap.

  • Chyze

Rap has been around since 1978 you pasty faced senile weirdo and it was born from the want 2 do more than join gangs….it started with peaceful block parties. Gangsta Rap is a part of Hip Hop…..NOT the other way around. Now when you finish stealing guitar riffs and melodies from artists greater than yourself….then maybe…you’ll have a valid point. Kiss was great at one point but your relevance died long ago.

  • remy730

There’s not too many things more infuriating than an outsider speaking on a subject they have no idea about like they are the authority on the subject. Imma drop a manifesto on the reason why white men like having sex with minors is because their dad raped them, tomorrow. I don’t have the cultural background to appreciate being a pedophile…. but still.

  • MidWestFlyest

Haha, grumpy old white men, shit is so funny to me. Bet he votes for Trump.

  • ursocalledgod

the opinions of a bassist whos band hasn’t been relevant in decades carries no weight whatsoever. when you speak on things you cant fully assess from the outside looking in all you end up doing is sounding like a fuccing idiot. case in point.

  • Kiel HybridGlobal Freeman

Lol I think hes mad because rap keeps evolving while Rock music is pretty much dead…

He’s right if hip hop continues with the route it’s going it will fall. It’s not about the generation it’s the integrity. When Has said hip hop is dead I couldn’t agree more nowadays straight dumbed down unsoulful shyt with garbage flows. There is no variety and too many weak ass solo acts not saying nothing. So if niggaz is mad and trying to talk progression your fooling yourself. The Grammys. Even though bs doesn’t even really acknowledge the genre because there is nothing to award. Come correct with provocative shyt then maybe rap on a whole can gain sales as it once did. Rock was invented by a black man so fck Simmons but if he’s refering about the music now I understand. Stop with the fake ass colorful names and being somebody your not, heat the mic or don’t touch it.

    • bluelight74

That bigoted piece of shite wasn’t right about anything. An irrelevant attention seeking mediocre talent maggot. Rap music is the most globally dominant musical force and has been for over 20 years and has spawned countless spinoffs. What will die is this current crop of trash not the music itself.

      • #Mr.Toadman AKA Toastman

Naw gene states facts. If this faggotry or bullshit mumbling music keeps up its a wrap

KISS were the biggest sell outs in the world. If there was a picture in the dictionary next to Rock Bands Who Sold Out it would be of KISS

  • yomomma

hes kinda right but who is really surprised by this, coming from a rocker?

  • Jaymat_

Rap is horrible right now. I know that in ten years, I won’t be listening anymore. Most of the songs that I hear are not relevant to me at my age (37) and I cannot relate. I’m a grown man with a full time job and kids so hustling in these streets isn’t something that I really deal with at this stage of life. Like Jay-Z said, ” I don’t be in the project hallway, talking bout how I be in the projects all day.” Maybe rap is not dead, but it’s not growing either. Rap is starting to limit itself to a particular age group, I’ll say fifteen to thirty-year-olds. Respect in the rap game is not given to the predecessor. Rappers who have been doing it for years are looked at as washed up and it shows in their record sales and media exposure. Just a few weeks ago on this website I read a comment that said Jay Electronica has a “grandpa flow.” The old makes way for the new in the rap game and sheds itself like snakeskin. Diversity? Gone. Depth? Non existent. Balance? Forbidden. All we have for the most part are young people expressing what young people do over beats and they better get it all out soon. Because once you hit your thirties, “Mr. New Hottest Rapper,” the bell will toll for you also. I don’t mean to sound like someone’s old uncle on the porch drinking a 40, but I had to express how I feel about a genre that I am losing touch with.

    • Q.

All by design, Sir. Rap was deliberately engineered to stay in a juvenile state, the ONLY musical artform to do so. The blind just roll with the punches.

      • Jaymat_

“Light is provided through sparks of energy
From the mind that travels in rhyme form
        Giving sight to the blind
The dumb are mostly intrigued by the drum
Death only one can save self from
This relentless attack of the track spares none.”-Masta Killa

      • Q.

I always found it hilarious that right after that knowledge bomb, Ghost comes in with “Yo Yo fvck that!” Pure comedy. LOL

    • Apex Productionz

Bro everything you said was ON POINT.I’m 38 man so i can relate.WELL SAID!

    • DJ O

Well Im sure people your age 20 to 30 years ago were saying the same thing. How can u relate to music made for and by 20 year olds???? That rappers of your day still dropping music. Support them instead of trying to get into what the kids are listening too.

  • Q.

When I first read this headline on the NY Daily News, I chuckled…As an outsider, Gene Simmon’s opinion is moot, but there’s a grain a truth even in a lie! Rap is in a degenerative state, due to social engineering. And I wish half of these zombies farting over beats would die off.

  • Dolladae

Hip hop as a culture is dying while the MUSIC of the culture (rap) has evolved into something else. Rap will never die but we ARE allowing our culture of hip hop to die.

    • DJ O

Nah Hip Hop as a culture is alive and well. Its just HipHop as a music genre is not mainstream or pop.

  • hoeyuno

“I’m looking forward to music coming back to lyrics and melody, instead of just talking, “
Dumbest ish ever said. These old rock guys are legends to a lot of people but Emcees run circles around them with complicated lyrics. These guys do not give the music a chance and in the late 80s thought/hoped hip hop music would be a couple year fad but its become the voice of poor peoples and struggle globally 30 years later without the use of high heels and make up !!

  • JerZeBoy

Hey Gene is that why hip hop still sells more then rock does?

  • The City

    Okay dude

Who gives a fu-k what Gene Simmons say, let him go paint his face and put on his all black leotard.

    • ZUBU

LMAO…. dude wearing yoga pants… It’s like me complaining about country music, or harping about the attire grunge kids wear… Who cares what I think about a sector of music or culture that I’m not a part of…

    • He can’t…he sold the rights to the make up!

  • Boss

What about how he hiding them black Roots hey Gene we know nigga 👹

  • Anthony Mason

Rock music sells like H1 hummers in downtown Portland OR…

All the money is in EDM, hip hop, groups and solo singers…

KISS stands for…. “Knights In Satan’s Service”. Im not even joking….

Bet his evil fornicating a** won’t talk about that… never….

  • The Wackness Vs Dope

hip hop been dead. does anyone use turn tables anymore? whens the last time you heard a scratch? the other elements of it died a long time ago in the graffiti scene and break scene. the fashion still there but its got nothing to do with the other scenes. so now its not even about being a good a mc anymore. we should just call it something else because it is something else. it’s like when people call the beatles rock n roll and metallica when they are clearly very different

    • W.E.B. Du Bois

      wrong dumbass – it evolved

    • Celz

I don’t know what you listen to but Hip Hop is good.. Just saw a Run the Jewels show

      • The Wackness Vs Dope

well you know Jazz is not dead either there are still people who do it but – it’s not the 1920s with it.

    • Rap is dead….Hip Hop will never die!

      • The Wackness Vs Dope

well lets see, no turn tables, no breaking, no graffiti, no rapping. Thats something else. i don’t look at a dolphin and call it a cat.

      • There are different elements of Hip Hop, but in school yards, project rooftop hallways, prisons & parks, you can hear beats banged on on a hard surface with MC’s spitting lyrics.

The commercial side, RAP, is floundering, no denying that!

      • hip hop is not dead it just doesn’t get air play, there’s a lot of dope hip hop in the underground, internet shows, etc… if you have a open mind, a open ear, copy and paste this “Datpiff/iL4M” Search it and Enjoy! as a matter of fact Song #4 is a song about Graffiti how perfect is that.

Nas – “Each one of you guys that claim Hip-Hop is still alive

Like y’all ain’t in agreement wit Nas

That shit is dead motha’fucka, it’s dead bitch”

      • I only fck with early Nas shtt not a fan of his later stuff…. QUICK QUESTION, DID YOU CHECK MY SHTT??? the very first joint with KRS THE TEACHER DROPPING KNOWLEDGE covers a lot of what we talking about … I 4M my own opinion of what I like and hear I mean even when Nas said this quote in 2006 there was dope hip hop then, there was Dope hip hop in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011,2012, 2013,2014,2015, and there’s dope hip hop in 2016 so you either stuck in a certain era/time frame or you have become glued to your critics hat. BUT RESPECTFULLY to each his/her own, you’re entitled to feel how you feel we all have different likes and dislikes. I will say though maybe you should check out “Flip the script Radio” on Mixlr.c0m every Wednesday 8pm-11pm and listen to some real Hip Hop not that BS on the radio. Seek and ye shal find. – – – DATPIFF/iL4M

      • The Wackness Vs Dope

and people confuse black culture with hip hop – black culture is not hip hip. all hiphop gossip rags about black celebrities is not hip hop.

      • Neither are Obama phones but, ask a Black person for the Top 10 reasons Obama never did anything for Black people and they almost always point to Obama phones like poverty is Black culture.

  • Wow!
Definitely a good look for Hip Hop!
When Gene Simmons takes time out to hate, instead of beefing about not being able to wear his make up because he sold the rights to it when he needed the money, shows the power of Hip Hop.

Gene Simmons couldn’t even get in the news when he wanted to do a KISS anniversary….without make up!
