(AllHipHopNews) The digital legacy of Prince will live on as the pop icon’s official websites from 1994 to the present will be archived by The Prince Online Museum.
“This Museum is an archive of that work and a reminder of everything he accomplished as an independent artist with the support of his vibrant and dedicated online community,” says Sam Jennings, director of the Prince Online Museum and webmaster of Prince’s NPG Music Club, which provided exclusive Prince content from 2001 to 2006 through subscription.
According to The Fader, the website currently hosts 12 of the 20 plus Prince websites.
There will reportedly be no downloads sold and no membership fees required, according to Jennings, because the project was executed by individuals close to Prince, simply out of love.
The archiving of Prince’s digital legacy is slightly ironic as Prince banned Youtube and iTunes from hosting his music and actually deemed the internet as dead in an interview with The Daily Mirror in 2010.
“The Internet’s completely over. I don’t see why I should give my new music to iTunes or anyone else. They won’t pay me an advance for it and then they get angry when they can’t get it,” said Prince, who also revolutionized the way independent music was sold online as well.
“The internet’s like MTV. At one time MTV was hip and suddenly it became outdated. Anyway, all these computers and digital gadgets are no good.”
