Making Room & Following The Lead Of Our Sisters In Hip-Hop For 2012

With 2012 upon us, we wanna encourage folks to seriously take some time to invest and make room in the cypher and at the proverbial Hip-Hop roundtable table for our sistas who hold it down on the mic. There have been far too many discussions about where are the female emcees, and why don’t we see and hear more of them, when in reality they are all around us.

It’s up to each of us within Hip-Hop to insist that promoters make sure that women are included in their line up. We’re not talking about a token opening act, but a fair amount woven in the main line up. It’s up to us to insist that radio deejays, including myself, are consistently playing women emcees in our offerings. How about inviting more females to spit a hot 16 on an epic song?

It’s up to each of us who claim to love Hip Hop to be familiar above and beyond a casual name drop. We should know folks’ music. We should know the release date of albums. We should know when and where folks are touring. They should be a part of our discussions and debates. We should allow room for the diversity of expressions, and not fall back on the tired stereotype of all female emcees sounding the same. We should also follow the leads of our sisters, understanding there is much we can learn from them and whole lot of flava we can soak up to improve help improve ourselves.

As males within Hip-Hop, we should not limit our attraction or engagement to female emcees based on overt displays of sex. Yes, we know there are the Lil’ Kims and Foxy Browns who made their mark going that route, but just like we’ve had male groups like 2Live Crew who brought that to the table, we don’t limit the male experience within rap to that group, hence whey should we limit our sistas?

Below are three great websites that’ll hopefully get people familiar with female emcees in 2012. One of them, Hip Hop Sisters, is run by Hip-Hop legend MC Lyte. The other one Femmixx focuses on female Hip-Hop producers as well as deejays and emcees.. That’s run by Tachelle Wilkes.

Another site, The Illest Female Rappers, focuses on independent female rappers, while the Womyns Hip Hop Movement focuses on a soon-to-be-released compilation put together by DJ Kuttin Kandi, dedicated to ending domestic violence.

Folks should be familiar with Momma’s Hip Hop Kitchen. which focuses on Health, Nutrition and Physical Activity using Hip Hop Culture. They are celebrating their 5th year and currently, they’re looking for artists to be down with their upcoming “Be The Cure” event in March.

Since Hip-Hop has as its 5th Element, Knowledge, we urge folks to get familiar with http://crunkfeministcollective.wordpress.com/. They bring attention to a lot of issues that are of importance to the Hip-Hop Generation, coming from an unapologetic, uncompromised feminist perspective. They don’t take no mess from nobody.

Over the holidays, I put together a YouTube playlist that has over 100 female emcees. It’s by no means a definitive list, but hopefully it’ll turn folks on to some artists they can add to their repertoire. You can access that playlist below or by clicking HERE.

In 2012, let’s push the envelope, do some serious crate digging, and be the change we say we want….

Hip-Hop Rumor: Kim Kardashian Broke Up Kanye and Amber?

Amber Rose is finally opening up about why her relationship with Kanye West met its demise. The official “come-up” queen sat down with Star magazine and claims that the real reason she and Kanye broke up was all because of Ray J’s former bang buddy, Kim Kardashian.

Here’s what Amber had to say about the the former p### star-turned-reality star’s homewrecking ways.

“Kim is one of the main reasons why me and Kanye aren’t together … She’s a homewrecker.”

The two first hooked up while Kim was dating Reggie Bush and Amber was with Kanye, 34.“They were BOTH cheating,Amber reveals. “They were both cheating on me and Reggie with each other.”

And Kim, Amber says, instigated the whole affair by calling, texting, and sending racy photos of herself to Kanye. But even when Amber uncovered the emails and confronted Kim, 31, she just wouldn’t give up trying to steal Amber’s man.

“She was sending pictures, and I was like, ‘Kim just stop. Don’t be that person,'” Amber says, “I thought at least she’d be woman enough to respond to me. She never responded.”

Nothing we hear about Kim K. surprises us anymore. She needs to see a therapist to address her issues of low self-esteem. One thing’s for sure – she sure does love guys with “Big Egos”.

?uestlove Says D’Angelo Making Finishing Touches On Long-Awaited Album

(AllHipHop News) Reclusive soul singer D’Angelo is laying the foundation for a long-awaited return to music as he embarks on a European tour.

The entertainer will travel overseas to kick off the outing in Stockholm on January 26. Other stops include Copenhagen on January 27, Paris on January 29, and Amsterdam on January 30 and 31. The tour wraps up in London on February 3.

News of the trek comes as D’Angelo puts the finishing touches on the follow-up to his sophomore opus, Voodoo. The album, released in 2000, featured the hit singles “Devil’s Pie,” “Left and Right” feat. Redman and Method Man, and “Untitled (How Does It Feel).”

When asked about the status of D’Angelo’s forthcoming opus, longtime collaborator/Roots drummer ?uestlove mentioned that his friend is in the “home-stretch” of recording the album.

“I’m on his record as well,” ?uestlove shared with Billboard.com’s The Juice. “He’s in the home-stretch right now. I know that Fred Wesley and the JB Horns just did a cut that Q-Tip did; I know he’s doing his vocals right now.”

The update reinforces similar statements made last month from ?uestlove, who told Pitchfork.com that “the album is pretty much 97 percent done.

“He’s just finishing his lyrics now. He needs somebody to smack him and take the record away from him, because it’s pretty much finished,” he added.

D’Angelo’s return to making music marks a turn away from headlines generated over the past few years, centering on his encounters with the law. On Monday (January 2), fans were left wondering as a demo track from the vocalist hit the Internet. According to ?uestlove, the Alternative rock tune, a cover of the 1992 Soundgarden hit, “Black Hole Sun,” will not appear on D’Angelo’s third album, as it was made more than five years ago and not leaked according to ?uestlove.

“@Spencer_Murphy my statement on Black Hole Sun: its a demo from like 8 yrs ago done in his crib in Va. Its NOT on the album (I did NOT leak),” the Roots musician tweeted.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Chris Brown Swears Off Interviews In 2012!!

Breezy Says No Thanks to the Media in 2012!

Chris Brown’s manager, Tina Davis, recently told Billboard that her client would not be doing any interviews in 2012. Despite having a very successful 2011, it appears that 2012 is the year of staying out of the spotlight for Mr. Breezy. Chris plans on taking the year to focus 150 percent on performing and recording, so it’s safe to suggest that a new album will be dropping sometime much later in the year.

His manager also said, “we’re not trying to be rude, selfish, or disrespectful to anyone in anyway. If people are going to judge him for anything, judge him for his talent.”

Coincidence that this is happening just days after reports were running rampant that he is getting back with ex-flame Rihanna? Who knows for sure, but don’t cancel out any possibilities just yet!
