Rapper Snoop Dogg and well-known rap collective Above the Law will be among the celebrities and local leaders honored during this year’s West Coast Hip-Hop Regional Awards.
The two-day event, which is slated to kick off with a meet and greet event on Oct. 24, will go beyond recognizing area movers and shakers who have made significant contribution to the music industry, according to West Coast Hip-Hop Regional Awards founder and CEO Miss SKG.
“It’s also about promoting diversity in the Hip-Hop genre, educating the public on the work of rap and Hip-Hop pioneers and to diminish the negativity associated with Hip-Hop and rap,” she told AllHipHop.com in a statement.
The Hip-Hop Regional Awards is designed to empower artists as well as honor them for their musical accomplishments and contributions to the community, while educating the public on the importance of and need for positive images associated with the Hip-Hop.
In addition to honoring West Coast artistry, the event will recognize Los Angeles City Councilman Bernard Parks and highlight health issues in the community such as to sickle cell anemia.
The emphasis on broader issues coincides with Miss SKG’s efforts to used the event as a vehicle to “implement after-school music programs and initiate scholarship programs so students can pursue their dreams in college.”
Snoop Dogg will join Above The Law and King Tee in receiving tributes during the event’s dinner show.
The second annual awards ceremony, which is set to begin at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 25 at the Wilshire Grand Hotel in downtown Los Angeles, will also pay homage to Latin Hip-Hop music.
Actress Porsha Coleman, Julio G and comedian T.K Kirkland will serve as hosts, while artists like Crooked I, Glasses Malone, Colby O Donis, Strong Arm Steady and others will also be celebrated at the Regional Awards.
