Hip-Hop Rumors: Will The Grammys Diss Hip-Hop?

THE GRAMMYS – WILL THEY DISS HIP-HOP?

I think it is quite possible that there is a worldwide conspiracy against Hip-Hop music and life. The rappers are getting locked up in droves, the music is castrated at radio and the videos get no play on outlets that should support. With that opinion, I offer this rumor to you. I have been told from a very small birdie that the Grammys will not be televising the rap/Hip-Hop portion of the awards. What I mean is, all the “best Hip-Hop” categories may not get any burn during the ceremony. They cut the female rapper part a ways back and now it seems like they may be getting slick. Remember when the rappers boycotted the Grammy’s back in the day for this reason? Sure you don’t. Read below:

In 1999, Jay-Z boycotted the Grammys:

“I am boycotting the Grammys because too many major rap artists continue to be overlooked,” Jay-Z said in a written statement. “Rappers deserve more attention from the Grammy committee and from the whole world. If it’s got a gun everybody knows about it; but if we go on a world tour, no one knows.”

In 1989, the whole rap movement at the time boycotted:

Three of the five nominees in what was then the brand new Rap Performance category announced they would boycott the event: LL Cool J and DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince were the first acts to pull out of the show, angered by the fact that the rap awards would not be part of the live, televised ceremony but would be part of the less prestigious pre-show proceedings instead. They were joined by the rap duo Salt-N-Pepa, who bowed out with a statement saying, “If they don’t want us, we don’t want them.” Rap and metal both got their own separate categories in the 1989 Grammy lineup for the first time, but while the metal awards were to be part of the live broadcast, rap was given second-class citizen status. Show producers said they had limited air time, and viewers “want George Michael,” not rap.

Freeway Ricky Ross Turns 50; Continues To Engage Youth

(AllHipHop News) Convicted drug lord “Freeway” Ricky Ross will celebrate his 50th birthday tomorrow (January 29th) and he has vowed to continue to educate youth about the perils of drugs and gang culture.

Ross served over 20-plus years in prison for running a massive crack-cocaine operation that was grossing almost $3 million dollars per week.

He was also catapulted to international infamy, when the San Jose Mercury Times exposed a link between Ross’ suppliers and the CIA, DEA, which lead to the Iran-Contra scandal.

Now, Ross spends his time reaching out to youngsters who might glorify the previous life he lead, which took two-decades from his life, in addition to acknowledging that his actions helped destroy his own community.

“We have to stress early the importance of leadership, finances, credit, entrepreneurship, and an improved vocabulary,” a reformed Freeway Ricky Ross told AllHipHop.com. “Becoming an active mentor is the first step to everything in this process.”

Freeway Ricky Ross is currently traveling the country for speaking engagements with organizations like Unity One, Amer-I-Can, Hip Hop Detox and his own non-profit, The Freeway Foundation.

Ross, who was released from Texarkana Prison in early 2009, will celebrate his 50th birthday at Westside Stages in Los Angeles, California.

Ludacris Hosts Sprite Step Off Docu-Series

The nationwide Sprite Step Off competition will be the focus of a new docu-series hosted by rapper/actor Ludacris.

The six-part series, titled Sprite Step Off, will follow six step teams from fraternities and sororities across the country as they prepare for the regional rounds of the Sprite Step Off competition while learning steps and beats as well as juggling round-the-clock rehearsals and family, friends and school demands.

Each team will compete for a chance to win one of two $100,000 scholarships at the event’s national final. The Sprite Step Off is regarded as the largest national step team competition in history as it celebrates the creativity and originality of the multicultural college experience through stepping, scholarship and service.

The combined prize pool of the Sprite-sponsored event amounts to $1.5 million in scholarships. In addition to the competition, the Sprite Step Off competition promotes a national program called the Sprite Step Off Challenge, an effort designed to inspire youth nationwide to help their communities by donating a collective total of 1.5 million hours of volunteerism and service between September 12, 2009 and September 12, 2010.

For Ludacris, the chance to showcase teams in the Step Off as well as the merits of stepping provides a win-win situation for viewers and step enthusiasts.

“I love that MTV2 and Sprite are giving a Step competition national exposure and introducing this creative dance form to an audience outside of the urban college landscape,” the entertainer said about the half-hour series, which was shot on location at college campuses around the country. “The teams competing on the show are not only dedicated but diverse and will take Step competitions to a new level.”

Fraternities and sororities featured on Sprite Step-Off include Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.; Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.; Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.; Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.; Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; and Zeta Tau Alpha.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with Sprite to bring these student performances to television as part of our new original series lineup for MTV2 and to provide a platform for the rich and historic tradition of college stepping,” added Chris McCarthy, senior vice president of Strategic Development and Digital TV Networks, MTV.

The Sprite Step Off docu-series featuring Ludacris will premiere Sunday (Jan. 31) on MTV2.

Soulja Boy & JaBar

Nowadays music has been simplified with the touch of a button and the post of a YouTube video. Frankly such actions have many of you thinking that anybody can be the next Soulja Boy. The reality is that he is who he is exclusively. Be a fan or not Soulja Boy’s beat driven hits are too hard to deny.

Thirsty for more success Soulja Boy is onto the next by propping his CEO hat tall. As he readies his next full length LP entitled The DeAndre Way, he sows a new impression into the music biz by introducing his next diamond in the rough via newly signed artist JaBar to his SOD Money Gang Imprint. With a legion of minions in tow and a co-sign from Universal towards the distribution side, this is sure to be an unstoppable force. Soulja Boy and JaBar have duly cooked up another anthem that many will find equally appealing through his first major single “Daze.”

During a super busy day Soulja Boy and his protégé took the time to holla at AllHipHop.com to preview a sneak peak of what is coming to a city near you.

AllHipHop.com: JaBar so you’re actually the first artist to release a project under the SOD Money Gang so how did you first hook up with Soulja boy and SOD?

Jabar: Me and Soulja actually met a few years ago at a show in Atlanta and we’ve just been cool every since.

AllHipHop.com: What made JaBar worthy of being signed?

Soulja Boy: I think JaBar would have been successful even without my co-sign. However much time you put into something then that’s what you can expect to get out of it and JaBar has a good work ethic. I’m building an empire from the group up and I plan on putting out a lot of talent. JaBar has talent and he stays on his grind, I wouldn’t even waste my time otherwise. JaBar is a superstar who can hold his own.

AllHipHop.com: Now you had previously started a clothing line, how’s that coming along?

JaBar: The clothing line was doing really good. I started it in high school, but I decided to put it on hold right now to concentrate on my music.

AllHipHop.com: When is your album dropping and what can hip hop fans expect?

JaBar: It should be dropping sometime around March or in the spring. I’ve been influenced by a lot of Atlanta artist and I’m ready to do it and go to the top.

AllHipHop.com: Tell us about the hysteria building around the new single?

JaBar: My first single is out right now called “Dazed.” I wrote it back when we were out on the ISouljaBoyTellem tour. We have a lot of heavy radio support right now.

AllHipHop.com: So what type of lesson’s have you learned from witnessing Soulja Boy achieve so much in the music industry?

JaBar: I’ve learned that it takes a lot of hard work. It takes a lot just to make it to the top. We’ve been on the road together for about two years so I’ve been doing shows and events and I’m ready to get out there.

AllHipHop.com: Now Soulja boy you have a lot on your plate outside of the music. What else can we expect from you?

Soulja Boy: Umm Yeah I just shot two movies. Both were with Nick Cannon. One should be coming out this year and the other will start filming soon. All of my fans should enjoy it because I’m starring in it, with the other one I’m just playing myself.  It should be going down before I leave for my tour. I have a video game in the works it’s still in development.

AllHipHop.com: You were featured on the new Snoop Project for the song “Pronto” what was that experience like?

Soulja Boy: Working with Snoop was amazing. He’s an OG in the game and he taught me a lot. He’s one of the best who’s worked with some of the best so he really broke down the game to me.

AllHipHop.com: You seem to be gaining more respect at your craft how does that feel?

Soulja Boy: I had to earn my respect in the game, and I’m still having to earn it. It’s building me as an artist and as an individual. I’ve been hated on by the masses so I still have to earn mine and try to win people over.

AllHipHop.com: There are talks of you working with Kanye West can you elaborate on that?

Soulja Boy: Yeah I produced a few songs for Kanye’s album. Its really special for me and I think it’s going to be really amazing. We we’re in the studio in Los Angeles. I did one track that I know people are going to go crazy over.

AllHipHop.com: As far as Soulja Boy’s album when can fans anticipate it to drop?

Soulja Boy: I already have my single, which should drop in maybe two weeks. I’m coming back super hard, everybody is gonna be all over me.

AllHipHop.com: I know the Internet has been instrumental in your career what are some of your favorite websites and blogs to break your new music?

Soulja Boy: My favorite websites and blogs are well I’m really into Twitter and Youtube. Those two are the ones that I go back and forth with the most on with my fans. Of course my own website SouljaBoyTellem.com. Other than that I try and break new music on all of the popular websites HotNewHipHop, AllHipHop, WorldStarHipHop, Real Talk NY, and some others.

AllHipHop.com: Well they say fame can corrupt a person, but it’s seems to have had the reverse effect on you so how do you stay so focused?

Soulja Boy: I stay focused by just know what I’m here for and know what I want to do with my life. My mind set is so free. I’m just able to concentrate 100% and be dedicated to what I’m working on.
