Hip-Hop Rumors: Should Macy’s And Walgreen’s Pay Drake For YOLO Gear?

YOLO.

So, before we get started: a bit of history about YOLO.

The earliest known use of the acronym is attributed to Adam Mesh from the third season of the NBC reality show The Average Joe. Mesh launched the “You Only Live Once” (YOLO) clothing line on March 20th, 2004. Since then, a lumber of people have used the phrase “YOLO,”including The Strokes, nightclubs and others. In 2011, Drake did songs called “Lord Known” and “The Motto,” where they extolled the virtues of YOLO. And America followed, in particular, the impressionable young. In fact, an Ontario man tweeted “Yolo” while driving drunk. He died as well as the other four passengers in the car. At that point, we thought YOLO was pretty much dead.

NOW.

Drake saw some merch in WalGreen’s and decided he deserves a cut of the action because of the tremendous popularity of the song he wrote with Lil Wayne. He tweeted: “Walgreens….you gotta either chill or cut the cheque, Macy’s…same goes for you.” Cheque….lol.

What do you think?

They keep us talking, but if we stop talking about them then they should worry! –illseed.

    Money shit.

  • Unless they were smart enough to own the rights and usage by trademarking it. Then yes…But most likely they don’t own the rights, rappers always talk about what they own, instead of actually owning things on paper. YMCA aka YMCMB will be fine they have enough money to live off of.

  • Why is this even a debate? Of course he should get paid for it. While he didn’t come up with “You only live once”, he did come up with the catch-phrase “YOLO”. He most certainly should get a portion of any profits relating directly to YOLO

    • No copyright?

      • Some things are beyond copyright

      • Q.

        Some things are beyond stupidity.

      • Darren Myt Collins

In the enterainment business NOTHING IS BEYOND COPYRIGHT and or Trademark……..either you have it or you don’t, and if you don’t you are like a man siiting on the toile…ASSED OUT

  • Gooz

I doubt anybody actually said YOLO before Drizzy…the saying is old as hell, but nobody put together the acronym and said it aloud. Also, Illseed, if you had a sense of literacy, you would know that CHEQUE is proper for the piece of paper Drake is talking about..a cheque is something you can cash for money, a CHECK is something like a nike swoosh. Step your grammar game up.

    • Check is for money too, I think it’s accepted as the English version….as opposed to the British one. ( Cheques )

    • Q.

LOL Canadian grammar cop? I mean…Grammar Mounted Police.

“Cheque” & “Check” = .same meaning. British vs. American spelling.

    • Actually Drake stole Yolo from Young Dro.. He was saying POLO (Playas only Live Once) for the last decade. Drake came along with the bigger name and switched “Playas” to “You”.. Nice try Drizzy.. Im still a fan though.

    • Sean Taylor

Step yo grammar game up sucka

: a written order directing a bank to pay money as instructed : draft

  • mrgibson

No legal copyrights? Yeaaaaa no one is giving you any money.

  • He should get smacked in the mouth for giving fools a lame a** excuse for doing stupid sh*t! And if he didn’t trademark it, NO he shouldn’t get paid! That’s his fault for not capitalizing and his own stupid a** slogan!

  • Yoyo!? lol

The irony about this whole situation is that Drake is signed to a record label who wants to be Bloods, but they stole this term from a rap group and record label that was created by Crips!!! Ha! Ha! Ha! Man, that’s some sh!t for your @ss when you really think about it. Lol!

  • Q.

This is right down there with Paris Hilton’s “That’s hot” claim. #wackgravy

  • Abrasive Angel

You Only Live Once has been around since before his birth and today all someone did was just use an acronym and it became an excuse to do some dumb shit.

  • Carlos

he should get money at least of that shirt right there, it says yolo is the motto that is a direct quote from the motto, which is copywrited

    • Mr. Coco Loso™

  • EzE

the term yolo will be played out jus like how bling bling was a decade ago…

  • POWBLENMG

this nigga jewish, he wants money, but he doesn’t own the rights of YOLO. Am I the only one who laughed at the ‘cut the check’ LMFAOOOO. He was watching the GD’s video.

  • MiiUziWeighsATon

honestly i think drake is just joking on this…i mean he tweeted it for godsake…if he was really serious he would not have tweeted it..you just would have heard about a lawsuit in the news. Being that he does not have that phrase copywritten or trademarked..he is assed out. Just like lil wayne did not copyright or trademark the word “bling”. If you ain’t got neither there is nothing you can do about it.

  • ladynamor

Whats really crazy is Drake used a lot of OTHER PEOPLES SH!T on his records since he started. Stolen swag, styles, ideology, slang and lyrics from other people. Then when someone does it to him HE TRIPS? What goes around comes back around an so on and so forth. Ecclesiastes type sh!t. SMH

  • Y.O.L.O was actually first used by a group out of L.A. called N.O.T.S. aka True Blue on their 2nd album titled Y.O.L.O. back in 1996/1997

  • lowdawg125
