Jay Z, Justin Timberlake, Alicia Keys, & Rihanna Not Boycotting Florida

(AllHipHop News) Last week Stevie Wonder made news when the legendary singer announced that he would not play any shows in Florida as a form of protest against the state’s controversial “Stand Your Ground” law. The statute gained national attention after Trayvon Martin was killed by George Zimmerman in 2012 and the not guilty verdict in Zimmerman’s murder trial on July 13.

Reports began circulating that other high-profile stars like Jay Z, Justin Timberlake, Kanye West, Madonna, Alicia Keys, The Rolling Stones, Rihanna, and Usher were joining Wonder’s refusal to perform in Florida. The Huffington Post is now reporting that list of stars has been mostly discredited.

The story was first reported by American Urban Radio Networks’ White House correspondent April Ryan. In Ryan’s article she claimed that sources close to Stevie Wonder confirmed the list. According to HuffPost several of the performers representatives have stated off the record that their clients are not involved in the boycott.

Rihanna, Alicia Keys, and The Rolling Stones have been confirmed to not be participating. Justin Timberlake and Jay Z apparently have not committed to the boycott either. Sun Life Stadium, the venue for the Miami stop of their joint tour, issued a statement on its website yesterday saying, “the Legends of The Summer Stadium tour with Justin Timberlake and JAY Z will take place as planned.”

Ryan updated her original post on Tuesday:

I obtained from multiple sources early Monday a list of artists and entertainers who my sources told me had committed to a boycott of Florida following the George Zimmerman acquittal.  Since publishing that list I have heard from several representatives of the artists named who say, on behalf of their clients, they are uncomfortable being identified on that list and are seeking additional information.

As of now the only acts on Ryan’s published list that have publicly announced that they will be boycotting the state of Florida are gospel group Mary Mary and soul singer Eddie Levert.

    Money over morals

Nah… even tho I have the utmost respect for Stevie Wonder’s decision, the other artists never said anything about a boycott in the first place. Everybody should find his way to fight the injustice that was done to Trayvon… Stevie found his… but i don’t think a general boycott is the most efficient thing to do.

Boycotts are the only things that work when deling with racist.

Who says the stand your ground law is immoral?

George Zimmerman was wrong, but I’m defending my family and home by any means necessary.

Honestly, this makes no sense to me.
The fans are going to pay the price because of a law.
If the law bothers you so much then do something to CHANGE IT!
this wont help at all plus there’s Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts (though the term is used very loosely there), Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode
    Island, South Carolina, South
Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming have adopted Castle Doctrine statutes, and other states
(Iowa, Virginia, and Washington) have considered
    stand-your-ground laws of their own.

They going to boycott those cities as well?

    • n n

It makes perfect sense remember sun city the resort in south africa Lionel richie and Bruce Springsteen and Michael Jackson refused to play because of apartheid? .

I love Stevie Wonder but I think it is wrong for him to boycott Florida by not performing there. Why should his fans and the people who love to see him perform be punished because of laws, politics, that verdict? Doesn’t make sense. I may not agree with the verdict but then again I don’t have all the facts either. Anyway his fans don’t need to be punished for what he thinks is wrong.

    • mike car

The people who you refer to as his fans live in florida therefor are florida residents who allow those state laws to pass. It makes sense.

      • Sonyafun

Doesn’t mean his fans had anything to do with that law, so why punish people when you don’t even know? Anyway isn’t it suppose to be about the music with the artists?

      • mike car

If you dont like it move to a better State

    • n n

Because when you hit a state in the pocket you make change similar to the reason you can sit in any seat you want in Alabama in 2013.

    • LetsBeRealpeople

YOu don’t love Stevie Wonder, you like Stevie Wonder. There is a difference. When you love Stevie Wonder, “but” never follows.

      • Sonyafun

Yes it does and it did. You can love someone and still disagree with them.

      • LetsBeRealpeople

You can love someone and set them free. You can recognize a grown man making a decision according to his convictions on social issues. Lets not permit white-washing the issue at hand.

damn so basically that writer was creating news herself which is popular in today’s media. And it just so happens that she was a White House Correspondent. Looks like Obama’s ppl are trying to keep this whole Trayvon Martin controversy going smh.

  • Abequa234

That whole list was just made up to begin with. These artists are not going to boycott one state when almost every state in America has some form of Stand Your Ground laws. It wouldn’t make sense. Doesn’t mean they agree with the verdict though. I don’t agree with the verdict but that wouldn’t stop me from vacationing in Florida.
