Pharrell Talks About Trying To Compete With Jay Z

(AllHipHop News) Pharrell Williams is a superstar producer, multiple Grammy winner, Academy Award nominee, and the creator of the number one song in the country. Despite all these accomplishments, the Virginia native still feels he is not in the same league as frequent collaborator Jay Z.

In a recent interview with The Guardian, Skateboard P admits that his debut solo album In My Mind is his least favorite work. Pharrell says it is because he didn’t know who he was, and he was just trying to compete with other artists.

“I thought I knew who I was… This competitive guy in the music industry, who admired my peers and felt he needed to compete with the races that they designed,” said Pharrell. “It was in my mind, but not in my heart. It was this caricature that I’d built in my mind, that fitted in with what Snoop and Jay were doing. Some of the things I said on that record, all the bragging, it’s not necessary. It doesn’t say anything about you, apart from how shallow you are.”

Pharrell goes on to point out that despite hoping to compete with Jay at the time, he came to the conclusion that it was not a going to happen. According to the G I R L performer, Jay’s run in the music business and lyrical talent puts him on another level.

“Jay was never going to race with any of us. That was just my delusion,” added Pharrell. “Because his career runs laps round people. And he runs laps round people, lyrically. He’s a philosopher and a poet.”

TRUTH. But isn’t this an accidental diss to Jay-Z? He’s been constantly called a “braggadocio rapper.”

      • Weedras

if he was taking a jab at him he wouldn’t have gone on to say dude is a poet etc…he’s just talking about himself… truth is 90% of rappers are braggadocious, if they don’t brag about what the have or what they do.. the ybrag about their skills on the mic or a combination of all..

      • Soulgasm

That’s was going to be my exactly point. It’s kind of contradictory for him to be quoted as saying that about bragging and being shallow, then to compliment Jay’s lyrical talent. Doesn’t make sense.

    • MrNoName2K

^2..really nothin much to say about that

  • Inmadopicouroz✓QUEENSᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

He’s not even close to Jay’s level. No hate just the truth. Just like @blackJay is not on the same level as a straight male like myself. We like pussyyy over here LMAO!!!! (You do realize how stupid you sound right?)

    • David Gonz

THEY COMPETING TO SEE WHO CAN BYTE THE MOST LEGENDS IN THEIR CAREER. JAY KNOWS HE NEVER MADE AN ORIGINAL STYLE AND PHARELL TOOK CURTIS MAYFIELDS WHOLE VOICE AND VOCAL PATTERN. PHARELL DANCIN,SNAPPIN,JUMPIN,SHUCK N JIVE FOR THE WHITE MAN. SMILIN. IT DISGUSTS ME. MR BOJANGLES 2014

    • CJ MAC

I never understood the worshiping of Jay. He’s a dope rapper, but never talks about nothing. And Pharrell needs to stop because Jay is most definitely not a philosopher. Bragging and boasting is not philosophy.

      • Sparky Flinstone

        i sooo agree!!

      • Truth Powell

That’s just that weak political back scratching all these artists do nowadays. It’s pathetic.

      • @iamvanessadenis

you can’t blame them for playing the game tho. stay around your idols to become the next one. at one point jay was bigger than pharrell now pharrell is outchea on the same level as jay almost. -@iamvanessadenis:disqus

    • rocnation30

thats true about pharrell ….but jay naw…..you can’t be the most number 1 hits ever copying a style….you can’t have 10 platinum albums plus… and still at 44 show no sign of slowing down…cmon just saying

      • David Gonz

yea you can. he did it lol.

maybe im a hater never been big on rapper jay. I think nas is better, scarface is better, 2 pac was is better, big, raekwon, ghostface, …..i still think dmx is better than jayz and probably would have been better if he didnt fall flat on his face. idk maybe im a hater but i have never been a big jay-z fan. however, money jay is another debate

    • @iamvanessadenis

i agree with you. i think when ppl think of jay z they think of his success outside of rap and that makes his rhyming look iller than it really is. -@iamvanessadenis

  • drac215

Jay is a “student of the game” who turned into a corporate teacher. He looks at hiphop like a business(as it is to a certain point). He studied(jaz-o,big daddy kane, biggie, the city of philly, down south, europe, and most of all nas!!!). Jay changes with the times(hanging with drake, rhianna, billionaires, etc.) Hes not known for being himself cause hes whatever money is at the time. People respect money so they respect jayz(don king of rap)!!! Who you know can cut ties with everyone he rolls with(after screaming loyalty),let his wife strip naked in front of america and their newborn child, denounce “God” and the “Lord Savior Christ” and still be “cool”? Think about it yall(its bigger than jayz)(lucifer sun of the morning) Peace and love yall God bless us all

    • rocnation30

i can relate to what you are saying to a certain point…but let me tell you no one ever can paint a picture like hov, rap like hov, be 44 years old 13 plus years in the game and still have rap in a headlock.he is crazy successful and any rapper you name cannot and will not compare.ever… im not all into the mans personal life , thats gossip anyways jay rap so people can react. greatest of all-time dead or alive…..numbers don’t lie

      • drac215

Sorry bro but numbers do lie!!! If you can have a great business plan(samsun, mtv, radio on ya payroll) you can project numbers. If your real coming out(nas, krs, olschool rappers, even macklemore) with no promotion and the people respond in mass numbers, then you can say numbers dont lie. Jay,lil wayne, even drake to a certain point know how they got where they are. Thats why people like beans, meek(had to put philly in it!!!)kendrick get madd respect from ya favorite rapper cause they are “real”. Peace and God bless bro

  • Spadey

I agree his career runs laps around people, but not his lyrics.

  • Raheem Classick

Hmm, OK, Just as I thought, A bunch of Haters hoping to corrupt others into Hating for the sake of Hate, Nothing to see here.

  • @iamvanessadenis

what pharrell said makes sense because i was just listening to ‘GIRL’ and ‘IN MY MIND’ back to back and ‘IN MY MIND’ was on some ol hip hop-rap shit. and ‘GIRL’ is more eclectic and fits his personality. but, i do like when pharrell brags on a record and talks trash. that shit be ill as hell. ya heard his verse on Future’s “MOVE THAT DOPE”? Pharrell was greasy with his lyricS!! ahah

    follow da kid @iamvanessadenis

    • Jayson C Williams

I don’t it sounds like someone wrote for him. He’s right it doesn’t sound like him
