50 Cent Says SMS Audio Investment Scared Interscope Due To Beats By Dre Ties

(AllHipHop News) 50 Cent recently spoke with Hot 103 Jams in Kansas City, and the newly independent artist addressed his decision to break times with his longtime label home Interscope Records.

50 spoke about how he believes his connection to SMS Audio created a wedge with Interscope. According to the New York rapper, the label had become so closely tied to Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine’s Beats By Dre audio brand that it became difficult to move forward.

“The whole building was leaning in a wrong direction for me. Interscope was kind of turning into ‘Beats By Dre Records’,” said 50. “Because I invested in SMS Audio and had a different priority, it was like they were afraid to do a lot of things. I’m not sure all of it was Jimmy’s intentions, but the staff was scared straight.”

He adds, “There was only one marching order for them when they actually left for us to shoot the music video for me, Em, and Adam Levine – “My Life” – was to make sure my headsets weren’t actually in the video.”

50 also discussed how he had very little creative control over the release of his music as an artist signed to a major label. He cited Interscope’s choice to release “Amusement Park” from Curtis as a single in 2007.

“When you’re having a staff meeting and people are deciding what songs should go first or how you should actually go… To give you an example, When I launched ‘Amusement Park’ that definitely wasn’t my pick,” states 50. “It was a song that reminded them of ‘Candy Shop.’ That was an easy hit for the system.”

ahahahahah I thought he ran Interscope! Now he was being “controlled”. They were scared of his earphones?!??! Why would anyone endorse or create a product different from their boss…That was a dumb@$$ move. Wasn’t one of the 50 laws of power “never outshine the master”? For all you d-riders who talk about 50 genius and money this shows he wasn’t/isn’t that smart.

Yes I know he is rich, Dre and Em made him and he got lucky with Vitamin Water so let’s get that out of the way. Why is he still making them C+ movies on NetFlix?!?!?!?

Allhiphop on that heavy payola that’s why we get a new update every day before his album drops. At least his new Independent label has some money apparently….

    • BigHomie337

Dre and Em made him? Lol. Did they help him, yea but 50’s buzz was too big @ that time to say he wasnt gonna blow. Everybody was trying to sign him. I can’t say they made him when they haven’t had another artist nearly as successful since 50. Plus Dre didn’t produce 50’s whole album. Sha Money XL produced most of
50’s albums. It was a perfect mix at the time but don’t make it seem like Dre and Em were solely responsible because every other artist they’ve had from that time frame to now hasn’t come close to matching 50’s career.

      • Casor_G

You think he would have sold that many albums if Dre (OG legend) and Em (white fan base) didn’t endorse him? You can;’t be serious. He may have sold well but never 10M copies..more like 4-5

      • BigHomie337

I said it was a perfect mix at the time but I’m not gonna say it was all then. If that’s the case why haven’t any of their artist since then come close to matching 50’s career? Em and Dre both have had a deep roster of rappers that have either flopped or didn’t even get a release. The cosign wouldn’t mean anything if the music wasnt on point during that time frame.

      • Perfect mix = Exactly

    • I can understand him very well. He was a product at Interscope. Just like any product the corporation uses to fill shelves in stores. 50cent was a good product, because he advertised the label as much as he could. Jimmy Iovine is a genius for that. He made enough money from the momentum 50 had to make his label a strong force in music. Once music was not selling good anymore and the market was flushed with more product from 2004 on, they went into headphones. The people in the south are just quicker with producing music. They are no perfectionists. This has been the success for cash money. Signing only artists who can offer a new hit once a week. Have an album worth of material ready at least once a month is their formula. Nicki Minaj is the perfect example. She catered quicker to Lady Gaga’s fanbase than Lady Gaga herself could. So Nicki took her market and probably a lot of other people’s target consumers. And especially it’s the female audience that matters.

Guys download girls still buy records. Even the last wave of gangsta rap is due to the fact that retards who are simply too stupid to use a computer have no other choice than buying music. This is the main reason why a lot of content went downhill. Right now the music industry finally realized, CDs are probably outdated since a long time, but there are still people hungry for great new music. This again explains the latest surge in more artistic music. Their target group has been just listening for at least 15 years old music and is now hungry for something new that defines their generation.

Music is first of all a business.

Agree, but, CD sound better than downloads, unless u pushing a lot of power behind it. Been seeing a lotta of Vinyl albums for sales too. Hate how Cash Money got Mystikal lock down. Mystikal has a fan base, might not be pop size, Busta too. Record Company is ruining music period.

      • Thumb drives repleaced CD’s…even in my house.

    • EL_BARK

One more word out jada mouth. I going to push styles shet back.?
      My have things done changed.

      • Only thing that changed was 50’s perceptions…..after his WAKE UP call.

    • Arrie Mental Woodard

Why would anyone endorse or create a product different from their boss…That was a dumb@$$ move……. having your own brand is a bad thing now???? You gonna sign on to whatever your boss brings to the table or will you try and put yourself ina position to be the boss… and How many times does he have to say that Em is his Dre…. Vitamin Water wasnt luck, it was a sound business move and why not make C+ movies…. they selling and its residual income…. All money equals more money… SMS headphones bring him money….. beats by Dre brings money to him…. its not that hard to figure out

What does it have to do with “outshining the master” ???… please niggas need to see the large picture… 50 is speaking on a serious matter…

A record label is a record label… interscope goal is to sell music not products… At this point Jimmy got the fund to invest and create any kind of products… what if Jimmy says you know what I want to create my own “ciroc” or my own clothing line or my own perfume?… I mean where do we draw the line?…

50 is not a dumbass… he is applying one of the 50 laws of power “Lose he Battles, Win the War”…

Whether you like it or not… The 50 Cent brand is a STRONG worldwide brand… except Eminem, 50 is the only rapper with that kind of reach… The Massacre did 5 Mill in the US, 5 Mill Outside… Universal Music Group aka Jimmy Boss knows how valuable 50 Cent is that’s why they wouldn’t let 50 go and made that indy deal possible…
As a matter of fact Check this out… sms audio is now distributed in 60 countries around the world… Yep 60!… it shows how international The “50 Cent” Brand is… At this point 50 doesn’t care about selling big first week numbers… it is all about Touring and Merchandising… The Merchandising include his sms audio headphones, his sms clothing, his straight to DVDs movies, his sk energy drink and his hangwith app…

  • The Arsonist

Um 50…. SmS audio and Dre Beats arent even in the same galaxy I’m pretty sure no one was really tripping off your headphones, hate it or love it, Beats has the headphone market cornered.

    • Charismatic eNegro Jef Vinson

Funny thing is they sell off name only. The headphone quality isn’t all that great. Dre was smart to get that shit out on the market first.

      • The Arsonist

The headphones are decent, and of course name recognition is what sells them thats the same with most trendy devices, but since Beats are made by Monster, I expect them to get better over time, especially now they appear to be a hot selling device. My boy works for beats and from what he’s seen with his own eyes is that Dre and Jimmy are pretty much deep into the development of those headphones so its not just Dre adding his name to something he doesn’t have any input on, he’s actually very very hands on with the development of the beats line.

      • Thanx Nerve

If your boy works for Beats, you should know that they don’t work with Monster since 2011.

But indeed the Beats devices are getting better and better.

      • The Arsonist

Monster doesn’t manufacture them any more but every patent and piece of technology inside of Beats came from Monster, when Beats split from Monster they left with all the patents, like I said previously that now Dre and Jimmy are deep into development so I expect the headphones to get better.

Agree, cause they can never be on the level of a Bose headphone. Bose speakers don’t even have a price tag on them, guess they feel u got to ask u can’t afford them.

    • In America, Beats headphones are running it. Internationally, SMS is hands down leaps and bounds beyond beats, so you’re correct they aren’t in the same category.

      • p4s2p0

Beats are running the show world wide with billions in revenue each year. SMS doesn’t even get attention on youtube let alone the market which is much harder but let me guess you bought a set lol.

  • soyhiphop

Beats by dre sells more than any record currently at inter scope…sms is nowhere near it

  • johnblacksad

Yeah… just like he scared Hov away from the mic right?! Fcuk outta here Fif!

I don’t even hate dude, I actually like him most of the time… but right now this played out strategy is making me look at him like a lil bitch!

Animal Ambition still won’t sell… might go gold at best and I doubt it

    • Casor_G

    • justmathoughts

is it not going to sell or is it going to go gold? huge difference

      • johnblacksad

Fif going gold is like him not selling… but besides, he could really not sell… I’m talkin bout 150k the first week and couple more hundred the following weeks… like 350k altogether…

      • trilltalk1

thats not gold, but if he do go gold on a inde label that is success. niggas act like a gold plat these days is bad. no one is selling millions of records unless you have jewish blood in your veins, or jewish people giving you the full push. not being racist being a realiest.

      • RapItUp

        350 + 150 = 500 = gold

      • johnblacksad

        as for me, I said 150 + 200… I’ll leave the math

      • RapItUp

ahh, I see that cumulative 350 there.. pardon that trill.. lol

      • TruthSerum

Bruh, this is 2014, the last releases by Lil Wayne and Kanye West stalled out at gold, on major labels with support from the media…….. If 50 were to manage a gold album, or even close to it on his own, that would be a victory

    • Animal Ambition will be released as a mixtape, I think.

  • Obi Won

Can’t blame the guy, album coming out, time to get reckless with a purpose behind it

  • grabo2003

Fif is right. A label is a team and a team is as strong as its weakest link. If the marketing is poor the record won’t sell and if the radio single choice is weak then the album will not sell as simple as that.

  • Brooklyn Stoop

To give you an example, When I launched ‘Amusement Park’ that definitely wasn’t my pick,” states 50. “It was a song that reminded them of ‘Candy Shop.’ That was an easy hit for the system.”

wasnt this “example” one of the examples stoute used, lol

  • Picasso Micheaux

There was a certain amount of novelty beyond the music that contributed to 50’s rise. He was cosigned by the biggest producer and the best selling rapper of his time.
He survived a shooting just a few years after we lost B.I.G. and Pac.
He had a compelling back story.
A community under siege leaned forward to hear a survivor’s tale…but now, the novelty is over.
In the early 2000’s, he was in the perfect storm of beneficial circumstances (from a product marketing standpoint), but not at the moment.
The only question at this point is whether he can offer the culture compelling art.
If not, what he’s doing now is gonna start sounding like Dame explaining how love walked out the door…

    • johnblacksad

      50 dead tho… no hate

      • andone

4+ fif threads on the home page today… id say curtis is still very much alive?

      • johnblacksad

        that’s a way to look at it…

      • is he relying on skills or marketing & promotion?

  • Eny Daboss

Lmaooo sms vs beat lolllll this niqqa so mad funny dre and jimmy must be dying laughing at this interview, then he said em and him relationship ppl can’t destroy it….. eminem is dre son keep talking shit bout dre and you will seee

    • ME

you know what son em is toooooo big for interscope that wat ever em says its ok and em is artistic and when he heard 50 he could not let it go and the their relationship is not music so there so he is ryt by saying that….thats friendship

      • Eny Daboss

and like i said if he was mad about it what didnt he keep 50 if he is so big for interscope why 50 album never get out?

      • ME

obviously fif cant be held back from perusing his own vision and we can speculate but all there is…i am sure they had a conversation abt it b4 he left and why would you stay if ppl dnt want to take ur brand as it is…he did good and interscope is really beats records all their artist promote beats so would u promote ur competition instead of pushing ur own product….and in all fairness i would not see why they would allow him to use their budget to promote somethin they are not goin to profit of

  • 50 and Dre have always had issues… competition is competition on any level, and when you have to alpha males in a room together they gonna clash. 50 doing a great job at promoting cause he’s everywhere and has people talking, hate or love its promotion and he doing it. Plus this dude got fans that will always check for him.
