Native Americans Not “Happy” With Pharrell, He Apologizes

(AllHipHop News) Pharrell Williams is back in a controversial space.

This time, however, he has not upset African American women. Social media activists and others took exception to the cover art of the UK edition of Elle magazine. The Virginia-beach-bred musician was photographed in Native American headdress.

After a slew of complaints, Pharrell issued a statement to quell the dissension.

“I respect and honor every kind of race, background and culture. I am genuinely sorry,” he said.

Oddly, the 41-year-old producer has stated that some of this family lineage has indigenous blood in it.

Oh for fuck’s sake.. does someone have to be offended by every single thing someone else does?

    • BIGDICKSWANGA

You’ve got to earn the right to wear a headdress. It is a privilege, not a right. It is no different than the gangster disciples coming after rick ross for using their symbols on his albums to try and make money off them, when he hasn’t lived that life or became remotely close to being a gangbanger. Or the Hells Angels suing Jeezy for using their symbols in his clothing brand. Think about it that way and that should give you some perspective. Copyright infringement, or just simple pride, either way, eat a dick. You probably never cherished something so much you would be willing to die for it, or even fight for it at least.

        Nigga please… fall back

  • El moreno de Queens #Dominican

he looks part native american to me

  • Obi Won

LOL!!! as soon as I saw the cover I started laughing.

It is disrespectful. Most people just don’t realize because most people have no idea about true NDN culture.
And the fact he may have some Native blood in him don’t mean its acceptable. If someone is 1/8 black you it wouldn’t be acceptable to dress up as a Zulu Warrior or wear blackface.

    • Celz

You are right but I don’t think that’s disrespectful though.. He’s not exploiting or degrading the culture IMO..

    • Myleage

idc if you were 0.00000% black, how does a Zulu Warrior affect me???

      • John Q. Public

guess that example is more geared toward a African man.
my point is just that it was disrespectful

      • Myleage

i see what you are saying

    • johnblacksad

I could understand for the blackface… but dressing as a Zulu warrior doesn’t seem offensive to me… it’s like wearing a knight armor or dressing as a samuraï shogun etc…

The feather hat wasn’t disrespectful either if you ask me… I’m pretty sure Andre 3000 has worn something like that before… but back in a time where we wasn’t as sensitive with the racial issue as we are now

The blackface is different from wearing accessories… (I’m not talkin wearing kkk sheets or sh!t like that of course)

      • John Q. Public

That’s my point when I said most have no idea about true NDN culture. U called it… and most see the headdress as just a “feather hat”. It is not a fashion accessory.

You need to be given the “right” to wear a Chiefs headdress and that right is given thru a proper ceremony. NDNs had high regard for Eagles and viewed them as messengers from God. so you had to earn those eagle feathers over your lifetime that make up the headdress by way of strength, loyalty, and hard work.

But we live in a time were most peoples exposure to native culture is seeing the “Redskins” on tv or other sports teams with non-natives dressing up as NDNs. People don’t realize NDNs actually have a culture and are still here.

And NDNs were pissed back when Andre did that at the Grammys. I remember very well. One popular NDN rap artist actually made a whole album just because of it.

Pharrell a good dude and anybody who knows his personality knowd he wasnt trying to offend nothin…truth be told lots of natives sport Cleveland Indians hats and jerseys with pride..the “redskins” Is a little fucced up but thats ok..in all the Clint Eastwood movies whenever the old indian was talking in his language 9 times out of 10 they were fuccin with Hollywood sayin fucced up shit and dissing them all.. true story….MI’KMAQ WARRIOR!!!

      “Native”…

      How about your a American.

As a African American… I wish European Americans would STOP calling you people “native” or “indigenous”…… U are are Just American.

      • Mec-One

white folk always gotta label something ……..

    • John Q. Public

imma disagree. The Clevland Indians logo is mad disrespectful. equivalent to a Black Sambo logo. The dead Indians logo I seen natives sport which is similar but with a native spin on it. I am NDN and will admit I bought my son a Chicago Blackhawks jersey but at least that one is done with taste.

respect to Mikmaq nation tho. RIP to Annie Mae Aquash

      HIDATSA… Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara Nation

      • hoeyuno

I wont argue what your saying at all. Truth be told your right about it being the sambo logo equivelant….and if it was anybody else but pharrell making a mess of plains peoples culture and traditions id be on the attack to but pharrell never meant no harm….the only part that annoys me is that every couple decades it becomes “cool” to be native again. And every north american and there cat suddenly has native indian ancestry. .go visit a poorer rez where kids are living in third world conditions and build something for those kids like those skateboarders did at Pineridge..go see the Ojibwe rezs in Ontario that have no running water or indoor plumbing…then go play dress up…
        And mad respect to Hidatsa!!

Have you heard A tribe called red?? If not check out the mixtape and the songs “electric powwow” and “native puppy love”..dudes did an amazing job on those songs.

      • John Q. Public

ill check it. always lookin for quality native rap

      • hoeyuno

Its more drum and base..im not a drum and base head myself but they put together some pretty amazing shit. Im always supporting “Winnipegs most”though.
