Schoolboy Q Discusses Labeling An Album "Classic" & Why The Rap Game Is "F*cked Up"

(AllHipHop News) In the digital age with Internet forums, Twitter, and the YouTube comment section it seems the word “classic” is used to describe a musical project moments after it leaks online.

Many feel the overuse of tagging (or not tagging) an album a masterpiece almost immediately after its release is affecting the way listeners appreciation music, and TDE emcee Schoolboy Q seems to agree with that idea.

Q recently did an interview with Acclaim, and the Oxymoron creator discussed instant reviews of an artist’s work. According to Schoolboy, it takes time to fully absorbed an album.

“One thing I’m big on is believing in giving an album time. I’ll say you’ll have to give an album three years before you can call it a classic. If you can’t listen to it three years later then it’s not really a classic,” said Q. “I spent a f**king year putting together Oxymoron, and these reviewers have figured it all out and made up their minds about it the day after it was released? Come on man – I poured my heart and soul into this thing. You can’t tell me you absorbed it all after one or two listens!”

The Black Hippy member also addressed the oversaturation in today’s music culture. In Schoolboy Q’s opinion, blogs are partially to blame for the constant music releases from rappers.

“As much as [the music blog mentality] helped the game, it f**ked the game up too. When it came, people just got carried away,” added Q. “There was something dropping all the time. Every day there’s four rappers releasing s**t. It’s just getting out of hand now, I mean. I don’t want to be one of the rappers complaining – I don’t want to sound like I’m playing anybody – but I’m just saying: the game is kind of f**ked up.”

Yeah… as much as I try to keep up, gotta admit I’m slowly losing touch… can’t listen to everything that comes out especially when you gotta navigate through a lot of bullsh!t music to find one or two gems…

So now I’m on a #NoNewRapper policy… I stay fcukin with the ones I know and trust… Styles P, Sean Price, Freeway, Jeezy, Rich Boy, Lil Keke, Kweli etc… and I stay listening to my oldies… Wu, Gang Starr, Com Sense, Lox, Black Rob, UGK, Big L, Sigel, AZ, Nas, Mobb, Nore, Bumpy Knuckles, Facemob, Dilated, Digable Planets, X, et cetera, et cetera…

If a ‘new’ n!gga dope… Bronsolino, Freddie Gibbs, Schoolboy, Joey Bad… etc… he’ll find his way to my ears, I’m not worried

    • Twonpass

      I agree wit you 100 %

    • Eli Pinilla

All the new nggz you mentioned are dope. Specially the boy freddie gibbs. Big krit is that dude too

      • johnblacksad

Mos def on K.R.I.T…. the boy is talented at both producin AND rappin!

Yeah Krit is that dude! Love his mindset… smart, humble… keeps it hood without pretending to be the most hardcore gangsta around

and besides all that, his slab anthems are just dope!

      • Eli Pinilla

Maaan, I done blown an amp and 2 subs f*ckin with krit lol he Def the best comin out the south.

If your music good, we will find you.

Everybody with Wi-fi thinks their roger ebert these days. An album leaks and three hours later some pretentious douche who’s probably flunking out of college on his daddy’s dollar is giving you his amateur rankings of the album, song by song……

“The concept of this song is mesmerizing, however, the vocal performance leaves much to be desired, and the 2nd and 3rd bars of the first verse clearly out class the 2 and 3rd bars of the 2nd verse, leaving the listener dissapointed in the overall product” – review from some douchebag blogger.

I ain’t even really mess with his album like that but I agree with the overall point he’s making.

    • 5% Hov

Critics were always irrelevant anyway IMO

His album was balls.Still will be in three years

  • Eli Pinilla

He just salty. Yea, it takes a few years to be able to call something a classic. But it only takes a few listens to Tell if your album is average or just whack. His album was all out of sequence and some songs sound forced as hell on some “the label made me do it” shit. And I’m a fan. But these new rap nggz complain to much. Like they ain’t peep game and know off rip that this is how the industry is….schoolboy thought everybody was gonna love that shit, and they didnt. And the shit leaks. Reviewers have like a week or 2 to properly review the album to have the review out on day of release or day after. It has been this way for years.

  • SmashBandicoot

His album isn’t a classic at all. It’s just a huge disappointment.
TDE is a great HipHop collective but I’d be lying if I said Q wasn’t the weakest.

  • 5% Hov

This dude is maad weak son.

Lay ass kids can’t even put in the work and want praise for a few average 16’s,

Heart and soul? Nigga we heard that story before. If you aint spitting it in a new exciting way (K.Dot or Ab Soul)… then FOH

Fatboy Q is like the Bleek of TDE

    • 5% Hov

Sorry – my bad- Bleek actually had a two good albums

If an album needs 3 years to decide if it’s a classic, then these artists need to stop putting out and album every year or every few months. Let it marinate a bit and shit wouldn’t be so over saturated.

    • Bulli$hPride

      Like Jay Electronica ? lol

      • Motion Fiction Media

        Haha that’s way too long!

i think Q is right. its crazy how many rappers drop some shit and youre like umm damn i didnt even know this was out yet and vice versa. its like the drug game these days.

    • mrjones

what??? smh…the drug game? that was the stupidest comparison ive ever heard…you dont know nothn bout no drug game…shut up

      • King Cold

the comparison came from personal experiences for example its so many different artists in hip hop but alot of times we dont see the product they produce because its so many others in front of us. its like theyre feeding us what they want us to have instead of us seeing the real good shit that somebody else has. nah mean?

  • Tre C

i haven’t listened to his album since it came out. Same with Ross, YG, and a couple others..been a slow year for quality albums IMO

  • BlackBarbie2000

Let the music speak for itself. rather than rant and say the rap game is messed up. BE THE CHANGE.

He has a point about critiquing albums though. It does take time for an album to soak in. I wasnt sure about Kendrick shit when i first heard it. Then it clicked
