Jersey City Cancels Jim Jones Appearance

Rapper Jim Jones’ scheduled appearance at an HIV Testing Day event in Jersey City has been cancelled by city officials, AllHipHop.com has learned.

The Office of Mayor Jerramiah Healy has confirmed with AllHipHop.com that they have decided to eliminate the planned concert and speaking engagement by Jones from the June 27 festivities, due to the lyrical content of his music.

“The City of Jersey City is proud to sponsor events during the month of June that encourage our residents to be tested for HIV/AIDS,” Press Secretary Jennifer Morrill told AllHipHop.com. “When it was brought to the attention of the Mayor's Office staff that Mr. Jones was the star of the concert, a careful review of Mr. Jones' lyrics was done and ultimately the decision was made to cancel the show.”

In mid-May, shortly after making an emotional revelation on BET’s 106 & Park about his personal losses to HIV/AIDS, the Dipset/Byrdgang Capo had been selected to speak to the Jersey City about the importance of being tested.

Additionally, Jones, who lost both his father and an uncle to the disease, was set to receive a proclamation from the City of Jersey City, presented by Mayor Healey and New Jersey Senator Sandra Cunningham.

“Mayor Healy has always been a proponent of positive outlets for our youth and a strong gun control advocate,” Morrill told AllHipHop.com. “Mr. Jones' lyrics speak of violence to women and police, of the drug trade and guns, and other activities that Mayor Healy could not endorse by sponsoring an event featuring Mr. Jones.”

While there is no word on whether Jones will be replaced by another performer, all other National HIV Testing Day activities will still be held at PS #4107 in Jersey City.

Those wishing to attend must first get tested at an approved area testing site to gain entry.

Jim Jones’ latest effort on the music front, Jim Jones Presents M.O.B: Members of ByrdGang The Album hits stores July 1.

The event is not about his lyrics, but about HIV/AIDS.  I saw him on 106 speak about how the disease affected his life and family.  The city to a major "L" with this one.  If his appearance at the event would have brought more people to discuss this topic, then they should have let him be there.

Positive ish? Just cause he spoke about how AIDS/HIV affected him personally; Homie still promotes Gangs in his music. And real talk That's the last thing Jerz needs is another person telling our kids that being a Blood (or a Crip) is cool. Homie shouldnt be allowed to speak to anyone about anything positive, because thats Hypocrisy!

I can't believe some of the ignorant comments on here. This is about a disease, not rap lyrics. The fact is that he would draw a crowd, and more people would get tested and learn some important information.

Shame on NJ for being so shallow. Clean up Newark before you judge someone's rap lyrics.

even though his lyrics don't promote a positive message, i think you gotta extend a hand to someone trying to get involved with positive things.  otherwise, how do you ever create change?  i mean, he's a grown man.  what's the point of slapping him on the wrist for his lyrics.  he know he aint portraying a right image in his music.  but he's trying to do the right thing by being involved with something that's close to his heart.  accept his offer, and hold him to high standards for how he decides to participate.  but don't close the door on him before the fact.

valid arguments can be made for both sides. I respect jim for trying use his star power to inform people but @ the same time  a lot of his music doesn't have a positive overtone. I still think they shoulda let him speak though. like it or not a lot of people hold him in high regard especially some of these young thundercats. the message might have reached a few more people if it came from somebodies oppinion they respect.

He should've been allowed to speak. The music DOES matter, because the city CANNOT advocate something of that nature without looking hypocritical for trying to stop the very things that he glorifies. It's just stupid. It's politics, and I don't think that NJ was wrong for their decisions in this matter. How the hell you gon' have somebody stand up there and perform songs about crack, guns, and fucking bitches, then stop and tell them to fuck the bitches, but make sure you wrap it up. Shit sounds stupid as hell.

you don't ask r.kelly to sing at a save the children rally.  if jim has that many real things in his life he should rap about them in stead of rapping about foolishness.

No politician in their right mind would promote an artist with those kinds of lyrics because it would be the first thing that would be brought up.

sorry but that sends a convluted message when everytime we hear you on the mic you talking wild shit then you on some save the world shit.  take responsibility about what you rap about cause some kid lost his life cause someone associated with your "movement" told another kid to shoot him over bootlegging an album.

when you honor someone by putting them in front of cameras to represent your state you will be held accontable for that and those lyrics and the fake gang shit you promote is doing as uch as AIDS to damage a comunity. Especially when new jersey got a serious gang  and crime problem.

Jim Jones cannot separate himself from his lyrics on a case-by-case basis and I can't be mad at Jersey for making this decision. Whether or not his music is wack it wouldn't make sense to have him there considering what he promotes and glorifies in his music. If Jim Jones was really concerned about HIV/AIDS where are the lyrics promoting sexual responsibility instead of the standard "fuck bitches" mentality?

That just show's you that you can leave on both sides of the fence.  You can rap negativity and then try to preach the positives on the other hand. Especially when you are dealing with young adults and kids.  Too many mixed messages..."She's a bitch, She's a hoe..hows about some of this blow.."  by the way don't forget to put that condom on and protect yourself while speeding in your lambo running from 5-0, all along getting a blow blow!  Ok that was my week attempt at writing a rap lyric.

There are plenty of men and women in the hood with rough lives who've lost loved ones to AIDS, including Jones. You cannot compare someone with questionable rap lyrics trying to help AIDS victims and speak on prevention to having a child rapist work with kids.

Jim spoke about the subject on 106 & Park, but he's not good enough for Jersey?? Yeah, Jersey has a major violence problem, all the more reason to have someone they'll actually listen to come through to speak on such an important topic.

the sopranos don't presume to be reality  the problem when using that argument with regards to rap music is that rappers promote their music as a function of their reality.

using that movie argument is incongruous, becasue arnold does not preume to be the terminator.  the fantasy aspect is clearly drawn out.  the problem with Jones speaking on it is that they already ARE listening to him. And in that context when you have the attention of youth or anyone young enough to be susceptible to chaging their ways from what someoe says, you have to walk the walk and not just talk the talk.

You make money with your words you can't just step away from them when you feel like doing something else.  if Bill O reilly did that you'd have no problem calling him a hypocrite. Ditto Sharpton or anyone else that's not alligned with hiphop, so rappers shold be no exception.

if you say that lyrics don't matter then you have no understanding of the effects of the music on children.  why would his words on AIDS matter an his words about sellign drugs, being promiscuous, and fauxz gang rhetoricnot? that doesn't make any sense. You cna't have it both ways.  Either peopel are listening to him or they aren't.  And rapping 364 about something and then 1 about something else just doens't cut it.

Kudos for trying to stand up and do soemthing, but this is the reason why when you do things like that and you are of questionable pubic chracter you just stay behind the scenes and atually promote that way. You don't have Nas at a stay in school rally. Jim has spoken at the social lounge for allhiphop.  he has been a part the hip summit and a few other positive things.  But you areresponsible for th energy you put out and that's just reality

Let's start off this reply with: this event is/was not just for kids - it's open to the PUBLIC, and everyone has to get tested for AIDS to attend. It's a positive concept,  period.

Jones doesn't sell drugs, and he's engaged, so he's acting in his music. Talking about selling drugs and talking about women isn't who he is, it's what he raps about. It's no different from the Sopranos, which glorified drug dealing, cheating in relationships, violence toward women, selling drugs, murder and even more crimes for years.

I have every idea of how the music affects the kids, and I've also seen with my own eyes the effects of Jim and other rappers like him on kids when they talk to them about positive things.

Jim has talked to many students all over the country about staying in school, self esteem and other important topics. He's even been a part of the national poetry movement. He also shows through his work ethic that you can come from a difficult life and make yourself better - just like many rappers have done before him.

If Nas doesn't speak to kids about staying in school, it's not due to them not wanting him there, it's because he chooses not to.

I know it's easy to be high and mighty about these kinds of issues, but if parents and teachers and people on these boards aren't reaching people who need to hear important messages, then who will?

And yes, you are responsible for the energy you put out. So true.
