Hip-Hop Rumors: Canibus Apologizes For Rap Battle "Dizaster"

Canibus has issued an apology for his major choke during the Pay-Per-View event – Vendetta: Battle Royale over the weekend that had rap battle fans everywhere, including rapper Talib Kweli and producer Alchemist shaking their heads in disgust, when Canibus did the ultimate rap battle no-no and pulled out a notepad. Check out Canibus apology below swiped from his tumblr page. Cue the Twilight Zone music…now:

“The day of the battle my memory and mental state wasn’t 100% due to these circumstances. I knew this so I brought my copybook to practice the 30 plus pages of infinite rhymes that I had structured for Dizaster. The stitches in the back of my head were hurting me and my shoulder was killing me but The Ripper doesn’t need medication, he controls pain with his mind. At the event I was very confident with the likes of Supernatural behind me and the guy who’s strong stomach was showing- But to protect him from any abduction I won’t reveal his name- Lets just call him Subject 10. The crowd showed me energy as well and as I delivered my first round I could see in Dizaster’s eyes he was intimidated by the mind with the infinite rhyme. Eventually the traumatic effect I suffered days before caught up to me and I could no longer be as sharp as I needed to be. The fans paid money, as did the KOTD staff, so even though there was nothing left in my mental tank, I reached for what is now the infamous notepad and decided to read my infinite rhymes. Needless to say, the results were underwhelming and it didn’t look right, but now, realizing the actions that preceded the event I’m sure you all understand.”

“Firstly, I want to apologize first to ‘Subject 10’ whose vehicle I abandoned when the agents were approaching me. Secondly, I’d like to apologize to Supernat because I made him come support me and stand behind me for that embarrassment. Thirdly, I’d like to apologize to all The Rippers in attendance who I let down. Finally, I’d like to apologize to Dizaster and the entire KOTD staff. I tried my best and stood there like the solider I am but there was nothing I can do. As I said in the event, I could only do what I can do. For everyone who seems to be making a mockery out of my just- Remember this; dinosaurs once ruled the planet, Rome was once a powerhouse, The Blazers drafted Greg Oden, and every dog has its day. Doubt me and you will be defeated.”

Do you feel sorry for Canibus? Do you believe his excuses or did he just bite off more than he could chew getting into the ring with Dizaster?

Fitting In Fashionably: Find Yourself

“What do you say; me, you, and your Chloe glasses/Go somewhere private where we can discuss fashion/Like, Prada blouse, Gucci bra?…” – Jay-Z, “Give It To Me”

What we see and hear enough of, we buy into – often. Fashion is a prime example. Marketing is centered about influence. Influencing people to spend their hard earned money on the hottest items, well what they’re told is hot. No one can be upset with the ploys to move people to carry a certain bag, rock an exclusive pair of heels, no matter how uncomfortable, or stand in line for hours to have the in sneakers, just for the moment. Sometimes a brand is big enough to draw the money in all on its own – that’s what building a brand is all about. Still, the fact remains that being lured into fashion’s top names doesn’t mean you’re stylish.

NIKE AND KANYE REVEAL THE DESIGN FOR THE AIR YEEZY II SHOE
Kanye West’s AIR YEEZY II shoe

Take Michael Kors for instance, a well established and affluent line that you can now find every female, of any age and status, adorned in. Every woman includes high school age and the struggling college student, by the way. Nothing is wrong with Michael Kors, the brand. In fact, his bags, shoes, clothing, and jewelry are quite nice. But, it seems that what is talked about in songs most often impacts the urban world’s fashion sense. Lyrics speak, they increase sales too. Parents can be found rushing out to get their preteen with subpar grades $150 jeans. This isn’t a new trend, but possibly the continued cycle of seeking labels merely for validation.

Kanye West’s DW shoe line

The questions can even be posed, why not Jill Milan or a Bottega Venetag bag as the must haves? Why Gucci or Dior? Because they’re talked about more? Why does it even have to be high end, and in a lot of cases, a knockoff? Faking it to fit in seems to come in all sizes and styles. Many in the young and fly demographic are missing the concept that real style is authentic.

Yes, authentic, as in your own take on what a look should be about, down to the tag, or most times the lack of an expensive one.

BLACK MUSIC MONTH: "We Got The Jazz" – The Top 5 Artists To Mash-Up Rap With Abstract

It’s “Black Music Month!” And while it may not sound okay to some folks to call music ‘Black’ or ‘White’ or ‘in-between,’ there are definitely historical and cultural roots to today’s beloved music genres. Black Music Month is a time to celebrate the music of a people born out of struggle and raised into triumph. It emerged from the swamps and plantations of the South, the steel mills and railroads of the North, and everywhere Black people have been in this country. Most Black Music is derived from the rhythms of Africa, and in America, it mashed with other sounds to create the rhythmic pulses of most modern, Pop music. We first ponder Jazz. Dictionary.com defines Jazz as “music originating in New Orleans around the beginning of the 20th century and subsequently developing through various increasingly complex styles, generally marked by intricate, propulsive rhythms, polyphonic ensemble playing, improvisatory, virtuosic solos, melodic freedom, and a harmonic idiom ranging from simple diatonicism through chromaticism to atonality.” In other words, Jazz does what the heck it wants to do. The very definition of Jazz is complex, and arguably, its rebellious lack of adherence to any standards or “rules” of music make it a fond bedfellow for the renegade genre known as Rap. In fact, in the late ’80s and ’90s, the mash-up was so prevalent that a sub-genre called “Jazz Rap” emerged. Producers knew early on that the fodder from Jazz sampling was endless, and its cast of catalog characters reads like a encyclopedia of goodness – from Roach to Monk to Coltrane to Davis to Ellington to Armstrong, and countless more. Simply put, Rap wouldn’t be the same – or might not exist at all – if there were no Jazz. And, two generations of music lovers may not have grown an affection for the oddly brilliant Jazz. In honor of their monumental mixture and because we love Black Music Month, AllHipHop.com offers its “Top 5 Artists (or Groups) To Mash-Up Rap With Abstract”: 1. GIL SCOTT-HERON (The Father of Rap) Heron was a jazz poet, musician, and author who gained notoriety, particularly in the ’70s and ’80s, for his social and political statements, including the famous “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised”. The late Heron personified “cool” – from his signature Afro to his offbeat clothing and sensibilities, he was both Jazz and Hip-Hop. Over Jazz, he wove rebel rhyme tales in time. Before there was Rap, there was Gil.
2. GURU (Gangstarr) There are artists who sampled Jazz and made great music, and then there is Guru. The late Gangstarr general took Jazz Rap to a whole new level – even composing volumes of the mash-up via his acclaimed artist collaboration album series, Jazzmatazz. which debuted in 1993. Along with DJ Premier and others, Guru perfected the art of borrowing from the greats while creating his own signature style. His production and rhymes were sought after, as was the case when Spike Lee called on him for “Jazz Thing” from the 1990 Mo’ Better Blues soundtrack.
3. A TRIBE CALLED QUEST They were Jazz right from the Q-Tip-driven start, but it was their 1991 The Low End Theory album that made them the Kings of so-called Jazz Rap. The New York group, with members Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, Ali Shaheed, and sometimes Jarobi, dabbled in the rare, vinyl Jazz collections of the Big Apple’s record stores and scored big with by mashing fun, lighthearted, braggy lyrics over serious bass-lines that even your parents and grandparents could appreciate. Last year’s award-winning documentary, Beats, Rhymes, and Life, directed by Michael Rapaport, captures the story of the unique sound that took hold of the Rap industry in the late ’80s and still holds us captive today. Tribe got the Jazz – literally.
4. DE LA SOUL (and like the entire Native Tongue Movement)
The entire Native Tongue movement (including Jungle Brothers, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Queen Latifah, Monie Love, Blacksheep, and even Leaders of the New School with a young Busta Rhymes and Brand Nubian) was about something. Especially feel good messages over jazzy and funky grooves, in the spirit of their Zulu Nation ancestors. Of the collective – outside of Tribe – none may have used Jazz more to their advantage than De La Soul. With psychedelic visuals and metaphors about “Potholes”, the mash-up of De La’s Plug 1, Plug 2, and DJ Maseo over horn-heavy, danceable tracks was beautiful music to our ears. The trio lives on 25 years later and is still recording – these days playing the First Serve angle, but sounding as groovy as ever.
5. DIGABLE PLANETS Sometimes, good things come seemingly out of nowhere. By the early ’90s, the Jazz Rap era was in full swing, and ears everywhere were appreciating abstract music they may not have otherwise heard. Artists such as Herbie Hancock, Don Cherry, and Sonny Rollins were all up in the mix of Hip-Hop. Then, in 1993, “slick” was reborn. If you were old enough to know and love Rap during that year, there was no escaping the infectious bass of “Rebirth of Slick” i.e. “Cool Like Dat”. Either you hated yourself or you couldn’t hear, because that song catapulted a little two guys-and-a-girl thing called Digable Planets (comprised of the insect-inspired Doodlebug, Ladybug Mecca, and Butterfly) into the stratosphere. Digable Planets’ Reachin’ (A New Refutation of Time and Space) album also helped signify that Rap had reached full adolescence by the early ’90s, spawning an era of creativity and boldness in Rap that may never be duplicated again.
*** BONUS: NAS (with Jazz musician father, Olu Dara)  His name might not pop up high on many Jazz Rap lists, but certainly Nasir Jones knows a thing or two about this topic. The influence of his father, world-renowned Jazz musician Olu Dara, helped lead Nas toward the music industry that has held him down for two decades. The father-son collaboration, “Bridging The Gap”, was a touching, Bluesy tribute to the mash-up of Jazz, Rap, and family heritage. And, it both knocked and swagged slow like molasses, with Daddy showing us exactly where Nas gets his deep-rooted musicianship from.
WE KNOW THERE ARE LOTS MORE EXAMPLES, BUT THIS IS ONLY A TOP 5 LIST! SHARE YOUR OWN BELOW! HAPPY BLACK MUSIC MONTH!

Diggy Simmons and J. Cole Squash Beef

(AllHipHop News) Last night at KMEL’s Summer Jam in San Francisco, California, Diggy Simmons and J.Cole put their differences aside in the hallway of the venue and squashed their beef.

Diggy and J.Cole have been at odds for several months now, ever since J.Cole rapped about being intimately involved with Diggy’s sister, Vanessa Simmons.

The beef stemmed from the J.Cole track “Purple Rain,” where J.Cole raps: “Good girl huh, father was a preacher/ sent her off to college thought I got her on a leash though / from the outside though, them girls be the squeakiest / you get ‘em inside them girls be the freakiest.

Things escalated when Diggy responded with the track “What You Say To Me,” taking on J.Cole and defending his family.

Both artists’ publicists, body guards and crew blocked all cameras from taking pictures, but multiple witnesses saw them say they were sorry, embrace and walk back to their neighboring dressing rooms.

No word on if the two will be working together, but the beef has been squashed by both artists at this point.

More details as news emerges.

Signs The World Is Coming To An End: Man Sets His Girlfriend On Fire At 7-Eleven

A crazy South Florida man is making headlines for dousing his ex-girlfriend with gasoline and setting her on fire, and then trying to stab her with a knife. According to police, 59-year-old Roosevelt Mondesir is accused of throwing gasoline on his 34-year-old girlfriend and setting her on fire in the parking lot of a 7-Eleven. The woman had just been denied a restraining order against her ex-boyfriend just two weeks before.

The two have a four-year-old child together and had agreed to meet at 3AM today at a 7-Eleven so that she could pick up her son. A 3AM meeting? Anyway, Mondesir showed up without their son, and instead brought a bucket of gasoline.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, the woman told police that she spotted the gasoline bucket and began to run away, when Mondesir threw it on her and lit her from behind. She was already on fire when she ran into the 7-Eleven and held the door closed from the inside. The store clerk called the police, and the man was arrested after he was found hiding in the bushes.

The woman suffered burns to her face and body, but is expected to recover. Mondesir is being charged with attempted murder charges. The store security camera caught the tail end of the altercation. Check out the video below:
