Movie Review: Lions for Lambs

In the Robert Redford-directed thriller Lions for Lambs, Derek Luke and Michael Pena play opinionated college students named A#### and Ernest respectively. At the head of the movie, these two friends ignite a fierce classroom debate that immediately forces the audience to stop and take a side on America’s fascination with patriotism.

With their passion for America-for-Americans, education and wasted money stance, the two men boast about getting involved. In a class presentation, they do a slide show on how to do away with the 11th grade, giving statistics on how much Americans would save as a result.  Sacrifice, save and serve are their ideas for saving America, and they subsequently join the war in Afghanistan.

Robert Redford does have a motive. He’s giving a voice to a case full of opinionated individuals that all come together after an American war goes wrong.

As the drama continues, the topic of war sparks a requested meeting with  seasoned TV journalist Janine Roth (Meryl Streep) and rising Republican Senator Jasper Irving (Tom Cruise). In the midst of this interview, she decides to pocket the senator’s new plan for a war win (which could affect the fate of A#### and Ernest) and deal with whatever consequences come her way. Her consequence, or course, is patriotism.

Tom Cruise plays the senator with grace, poise and a fierce determination; it’s as if he’s begging the audience to believe in the government and America again.  His efforts are regarded as words with no meaning by Streep’s character. Always blowing away audiences with her range, Meryl Streep carries an unashamed innocence and unrelenting wisdom. Jasper Irving and Janine Roth’s fluid interview are pinnacles of suspense, partly because you realize that every step forward Janine makes, patriotism and Jasper gain two more. As their conversation comes to an abrupt end, we realize that it’s not our enemies that will ultimately destroy America, it’s our own greed for recognition as the greatest nation.

Terrorism does not lurk in this movie – you see it coming a satellite away.  Professor Dr. Malley (Robert Redford) confronts the matter with his prize student (Andrew Garfield) with disbelief and a gulp of his Starbucks coffee. Redford captures Dr. Malley’s emotion with a heroic sadness, as he alarmingly watches his era succumb to an age of senseless apathy. The professor knows that his purpose in life is to teach the next generations, but his fear is that no one will listen. His student’s conscience recoils at the ruthlessness displayed at their conversation’s end.

Lions for Lambs is so rich and thought-provoking, you’ll want to tell someone about it. It’s one of the best written films of the year.

NFL WEEK 10 Picks

After last Sunday’s game against the Colts, Bill Belichick and Tony Dungy met in the middle of the field for the ceremonial handshake that most coaches do after a game.  If you look closely at the video from the game, you’ll notice that Dungy tried to say something to Belichick during the handshake and Belichick blew him off.  Was it intentional?  That’s anybody’s guess.  Can you blame Belichick if it was intentional? No.

Since the “spygate” incident, head coaches in the NFL and other sports have blasted Belichick and the Patriots for cheating.  Now if you believe he was the only coach, and that the Patriots were the only team that was doing such a thing, then I have a bridge in Brooklyn I want to sell you for a dime.  He wasn’t the first, and if there are other ways of stealing signals, he won’t be the last.

The fallout from this, Belichick and the Pats are considered the “black sheep” of the NFL and they use it as their motivation.  Every team has the attitude of “nobody likes us, everybody hates us.”  It’s a form of motivation.  The truth is, a number of teams don’t like the Pats at all.  And they know it.  It’s not just mental motivation for them, it’s the truth, and they will use that against their opponents every Sunday until the end of the season.  Just ask the Dolphins and the Redskins.

1pm games:

Minnesota Vikings (3-5) vs. Green Bay Packers (7-1)

Location: Lambeau Field, Green Bay, WI

The last time these two teams met, the Packers won 23-16 in Week 4.  That was the day Brett Farve broke Dan Marino’s record for Most Career TDs.  It’s always good to see a member of the AARP achieve such an accomplishment.

Since the Packers like to throw the ball so much, they should have no problem throwing the ball against the Vikes this Sunday.  The Vikes have the 31st ranked defense against the pass.  The Packers are ranked 5th in the league in passing offense. Look for the Packers to go to the air on 70% of their plays this Sunday as they try to embarrass the Vikes’ Secondary.

R.O.Y. (Rookie of the Year) Adrian Peterson ran for 112 yards and 1 touchdown in the last game.  Look for the same in this game.  Peterson is the league’s top rusher with 1036 yards rushing. And let’s not forget his record breaking performance from last week against the Chargers. (296 rushing yards, NFL single game record) The Vikes are the ranked 1st in rushing offense while the Packers are the 8th ranked team in rushing defense.  Since the Vikes have no passing game and they’re currently having issues at the QB position, look for the Vikes to work Peterson on the ground like his name was Kunta Kinte. With the Packers having the 11th ranked defense and the Vikes having the 22nd ranked defense, the advantage goes to the Packers.

My Pick: Packers

Jacksonville Jaguars (5-3) vs. Tennessee Titans (6-2)

Location: LP Field, Nashville, TN

In Week 1, the Titans beat the Jags 13-10 by putting up 282 rushing yards.  Since that game, the Titans have had the 1st ranked defense against the rush in the league while the Jags have had the 5th best rushing offense in the league.  Both teams can run the ball, so don’t look for too many points through the air.  This is strictly a game for the RBs.

Both teams have their own “dynamic duo” at RB.  The Titans have Chris Brown and Lendale White while the Jags have Maurice Jones-Drew and Fred Taylor.  It looks like the team that can stop the run, will win the game.  If that’s the case, the Titans have this game won.  They have the better D-line and LBs and are able to plug up running lanes easily.

The Titans’ defense is really making some noise and looks to make a serious run for the playoffs.  The Jags are still picking up their faces after getting spanked by the Saints last week.  The Jags are coming into this game with vengeance on their minds from their Week 1 loss and the motivation to get back on track from last week’s trouncing.  With the Colts looking to have the lock on the AFC South, whomever and however this game is won may determine who gets one of the Wild Card slots for the AFC.

My Pick: Titans

Denver Broncos (3-5) vs. Kansas City Chiefs (4-4)

Location: Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City, MO

This is the 1st of the 2 games between these two AFC West rivals.  Thankfully for the chiefs, they’re playing the first game at Arrowhead.  Arrowhead is one of the most underrated stadiums in the league when it comes to the “12th man”.  On that note, with the injury to Broncos’ QB Jay Cutler and the Broncos having the 26th ranked defense in the league, the Chiefs have the upper hand.

Chiefs RB Larry Johnson may miss Sunday’s game with a sprained ankle, which means Priest Holmes will start for the Chiefs.  Considering that at the start of the season he wasn’t expected to play football again due to a back injury, it looks as though Priest Holmes has taken a page out of Ra’s al Ghul’s book and has found new life.  The Chiefs need a good, smart game from QB Damon Huard. The Broncos may be ranked 26th in total defense, but they are ranked 8th against the pass.  That doesn’t help the Chiefs, who are ranked 17th in passing offense.

If Cutler doesn’t play, then QB Patrick Ramsey will get the start.  That means one thing; the Broncos will most likely run the ball for the majority of the game.   Broncos’ RB Travis Henry sat out of practice this week with swelling in his knee, so he’s questionable.  That means Rookie RB, Selvin Young, would get the start against a Chiefs’ rush defense that’s ranked 14th in the league. It may be a long day for the Broncos this Sunday.

My Pick: Chiefs

Buffalo Bills (4-4) vs. Miami Dolphins (0-8)

Location: Dolphin Stadium, Miami, FL

The 1972 Dolphins hold the only “undefeated” record in the league.  The 2007 Dolphins looks to hold the only “defeated” record in the league as well. Unlike the winless Rams, it is hard to find one thing about the Dolphins that can give them a chance of winning.  If the Dolphins go “defeated” for the season, maybe the league should put an asterisk next to their record and the footnote should read, ”*had no heart”.

The only thing one can suggest is that they try and show some heart.  You can sit here all day and mention what they should do on offense or defense, but unless they have heart, it won’t do you any good.  So, they only way the Dolphins will win this game; will be when they show some heart.

The Bills just have to keep playing they way they have been playing.  They have the better team on both sides of the ball. From QB, to RB, to coaching, the Bills shouldn’t have a problem putting this game away early.

My Pick: Bills

St. Louis Rams (0-8) vs. New Orleans Saints (4-4)

Location: Superdome, New Orleans, LA

Writing about 2 winless teams, back-to-back, is just wrong and “mean spirited”.  “Why hast thou forsaken me, Lord?”  The Rams do have a chance of winning a game this year, and this may be that weekend.  QB Marc Bulger is back, RB Stephen Jackson is back, and they still have their WR corp.  The Rams are ranked 16th in the league in passing.  That’s not great, but it’s not bad.  They’re in the middle of the bunch and that’s manageable in the NFL.

What the Rams need to do is stop Drew Brees.  That’s it.  Reggie Bush is banged up, so he may not have too much of a presence on offense this Sunday.  He’ll probably have a limited role. If the Rams Secondary can shut down the Saints’ WRs, then they have a good chance of winning on Sunday.

The Saints have been running on momentum for the past 4 weeks and it won’t stop this Sunday.  The Saints need to put pressure on the Rams O-line and disrupt every play they possibly can to win this game.  Considering the Rams O-line is weakened due to a rash of injuries, that shouldn’t be a problem for the Saints this weekend.

My Pick: Saints

Cleveland Browns (5-3) vs. Pittsburgh Steelers (5-2)

Location: Heinz Field, Pittsburgh, PA

This is going to be a good game this weekend.  The Steelers have the #1 ranked defense in the league while the Browns have the #4 ranked offense in the league.  On the flipside, the Steelers have the 8th ranked offense in the league while the Browns are ranked dead last in total defense in the league.  Also, the two teams met in Week 1 with the Brown beating the Steelers 34-7.  Oh…that’s not good.  You know the Steelers are coming into this game with one thing on their minds, vengeance.

The Browns have to find a way to tire out the Steelers defense with their running game.  The problem with that, it hardly exists.  The Browns are ranked 17th in running this year.  With their running game a little weak, their have to throw the ball again this weekend.  The problem with that, the Browns are ranked 17th in passing and the Steelers have the #1 ranked passing defense in the league.  Thank God the Browns are playing this game in Pittsburgh and not Cleveland because the “Dog Pound” would look like a kennel.

My Pick: Steelers

Philadelphia Eagles (3-5) vs. Washington Redskins (5-3)

Location: FedEx Field, Landover, MD

The Eagles are just having an awful season this year.  There has been too many distractions off the field to keep this focused.  At some point, as a team, you have to turn it around and this weekend may be that opportunity.

The Eagles have a better QB, RB and D-line than the Redskins.  The Redskins have the better coach.  Game management is such an intricate factor in sports nowadays; you need a coach with a clear head to focus on the rights and wrongs of the game.  There’s too much going on in Philly right now and it will be hard for any coach to focus on the game this Sunday or any Sunday at this point.  If they lose, the Eagles season is all but over.  Personally, it was over in the preseason.

My Pick: Redskins

Atlanta Falcons (2-6) vs. Carolina Panthers (4-4)

Location: Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte, NC

The last time the Falcons played the Panthers; it was in Week 3, the Falcons lost the game because their Secondary was getting use by the Panthers’ WRs, and CB DeAngelo Hall threw a Kanye tantrum that embarrassed his team and mostly himself.  Hopefully, he’s matured within the last month and a half, and is focused in turning around his team’s misfortunes.

Last week, the Falcons ran the ball effectively and they won the game.  Good for them. They need to do the same this Sunday.  The Panthers are the 20th ranked defense against the run.  That’s a far cry from Panther’s defenses of the past.  The Falcons need to run so they can throw off the Panthers defensive schemes with “pass action” and “play action” formations.  The Falcons have to try and confuse the Panthers defense.

The Panthers know the Falcons running and passing game is weak.  So they will come after QB Joey Harrington from every angle.  They also know how to get in the heads of the Falcons’ secondary.  That’s the advantage the Panthers have going into Sunday’s game.  As Larry Zbyszko would say, “now it is interesting to watch, as the combatants play this game of human chess”.

My Pick: Panthers

4pm games:

Cincinnati Bengals (2-6) vs. Baltimore Ravens (4-3)

M&T Bank Stadium, Baltimore, MD

When the Bengals beat the Ravens in the MNF opener, we all thought that this was their years to make some noise and bring the “fun” back to the NFL.  But the joke was on us, as both teams have been plagued with injuries on both sides of the ball and neither team has lived up to their expectations.

WR Chris Henry has returned to the Bengals from his 8 game suspension, so QB Carson Palmer has his big 3 WRs.  That’s scary for any defense since the Bengals are ranked 5th in passing on offense already.  Now that the Bengals have Henry back, the Ravens’ Secondary has their work cut out for them.

The Ravens need to protect QB Steve McNair and open running lanes for RB Willis McGahee.  If McNair can make it through the game without injuring or reinjuring any part of his body, (what’s left to injure on this man’s body?), then he can make it happen through the air and on the ground.  And since the Bengals defense is so weak, the Ravens need to just run the ball with McGahee and tire the defense out.  The Ravens are “tight” with the loss to the Steelers last Monday night and they remember Week 1 with the Bengals.  Best believe they’re coming into Sunday’s game with a chip on their shoulders as big as M&T Stadium.

My Pick: Ravens

The “I Could Care Less” Game of the Week:

Chicago Bears (3-5) vs. Oakland Raiders (2-6)

Location: McAfee Coliseum, Oakland, CA

The Raiders lost a game that they should have won through their defense.  The Bears didn’t lose last week because they were on their bye.  Bet you they were happy about that.   Both teams are now playing for pride.  Good for them because you got to have goals.

The Bears are the 26th ranked offense in the league.  The Raiders have the 16th ranked defense and have the 4th best passing defense.  That will make things interesting considering the Bears have the 14th ranked passing offense.  The Raiders have the 4th best rushing offense.  That’s not good for the Bears who are ranked 26th against the run.  It’s going to come down to Special Teams and coaching to determine the winner of this game.  If that’s the case, the Bears have the upper hand.

My Pick: Bears

Game of the Week: Dallas Cowboys (7-1) vs. NY Giants (6-2)

Location: Giants Stadium, East Rutherford, NJ

When the G-men and the ‘Boys played in Week 1, the Giants lost by 10 pts.  It was also speculated the QB Eli Manning, DE Osi Umenyiora, and RB Brandon Jacobs would miss a significant amount of time due to injury.  Since then, the G-men have won 6 straight games, are 1 game behind the NFC East leading Cowboys, and have been playing good, fundamental football.

The Giants and Cowboys are ranked 7th and 8th in total defense in that order.  Offensively, the Cowboys are ranked 2nd while the Giants are ranked 15th.  So on paper, the Cowboys have the upper hand.  But the Giants have been on a roll for the past 6 weeks and with momentum on their side, I going with the Giants.  If the Giants Secondary can hold off the Cowboys’ WRs by taking away QB Tony Romo’s big targets and stop RB Marion Barber.  They have a good chance of winning.

The Cowboys defense just has to rattle Manning and force him to make big mistakes.  Get in his head and make him over think.  Once he starts to over think situations, he won’t notice the targets right in front of him and try for the big play as a last minute move.  The Cowboys defense is getting better, but the Giants momentum will the Cowboys stomach aches this Sunday.

My Pick: Giants

Detroit Lions (6-2) vs. Arizona Cardinals (3-5)

Location: Cardinals Stadium, Glendale, AZ

4 more wins and Jon Kitna will fulfill his promise of 10 wins.  I know you all are probably tired of me keeping count, but for anyone to make the promise he made, for the team he plays for, and to be so close to cash it in; you’ve got to give them their props.  What the Lions are doing this year is special.  Everyone is impressed with how well their offense is clicking.  Wish you can say the same about their defense.  The Lions have the 28th defense in the league.  So you can tell that it’s their defense that’s keeping them in the game.

The Cards’ defense is ranked 9th in the league.  They’re ranked 13th against the pass which is what the Lions do very well.  The Cards will keep it close with the Lions, but the Lions are starting to get their running game back with the return of Kevin Jones.  The match-up to look out for is the RBs for both teams against the D-lines.  Jones and Cards RB   Edggerin James are very good and whichever team that can stop the run will win the game.

My Pick: Lions

Sunday Night Game:

Indianapolis Colts (7-1) vs. San Diego Chargers (4-4)

Location: Qualcomm Stadium, San Diego, CA

The Chargers let Vikes RB Adrian Peterson run up and down on them like they were a Pop Warner Team.  The Colts had a hard fought battle against the Patriots last Sunday.  Honestly, the Colts have the edge.  They have the 3rd best offense and the 5th best defense in the league.  They’re the 2nd strongest team in the league and with the way the Chargers defense has been playing lately, you can’t rely on them to stop Peyton Manning and all of his weapons.

If this was last year’s Chargers team, you could say this would have been the 3rd best game of the season.  But since the Chargers defense has been so lack luster, for lack of a better term, it doesn’t look like this game is going to be too exciting.  Manning and the Colts are going to come in to San Diego “mad as hell, and they’re not going to take it anymore.”  Remember, the Colts have a championship to defend.

My Pick: Colts

Monday Night Game:

San Francisco 49ers (2-6) vs. Seattle Seahawks (4-4)

Location: Qwest Field, Seattle, WA

The 49ers’offense is deader than Elvis. It showed the last time the 49ers played the Seahawks.  The 49ers lost that game 23-3 and were sacked 6 times.  That was also the game the 49ers’ QB, Alex Smith, was knocked out of that led to him missing 2 games with an elbow injury.  Well, Smith is back and it doesn’t mean squat because the 49ers still has no protection for Smith on the offensive line.  OT Jonas Jennings is out for the year, so it’s going to be a long day for the 49ers’ offense as they try to protect Smith without one of their linemen.  If you’re O-line can’t protect the QB, then they can’t open up lanes for the RB.  Don’t look for big numbers from Frank Gore either.

The Seahawks will be without RB Shawn Alexander this Sunday.  That means RB Maurice Morris will get the start.  With the 49ers having the 26th ranked rushing defense, look for the Seahawks to run down the 49ers defense and put points on the board from the ground game.  It’s going to be a Quest at Qwest Field for the MNF crew to make this game interesting to watch.

My Pick: Seahawks

Teams with Bye weeks: New England Patriots (9-0), NY Jets (1-8), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (5-4), Houston Texans (4-5)

For whatever reason, I couldn’t make this into a lazy Saturday. So, I did what I do worst – jumped online. Here is what I came back with, some stupid (and not so stupid) videos.

Here they go.

JAY-Z AND THE ROC-A-FELLA FAMILY

Dame Dash is at it again! He’s doing a documentary on The Roc, right before the bubble burst! I am mad that they called “Bean’s a multi-gold selling rap artist.” Check out the trailer.

GZA, RZA and Bill Murray: Coffee and Cigs! Shout out to Water Ur Seeds

Bill Murray is the man. So are RZA and GZA. “Are you a bug, Bill Murray?” Classic dry humor.

Shout out to BlokTV for the coverage! SWEEET! I could have attended this party with no costume on! Shout out to Liris Crosse! Stop played dominatrix – you know you are Ms. Softee!

THEY LET CRACK HEADS BUNGII JUMP?

This is sad, and sadder! The best and worst of Bling Bling, the alleged crack head. (Thanks, Winter. My dinner came back up after seeing this.)

G-DEP IS STILL HERE!

Since I have been covering G-Dep in the past, I am going to keep on. He builds with Suga DZL of the UK. Check the rhyme, yo.

HELL RAZAH AND SHABAZZ GO IN?

Check out “Hell Razah’s Ladder,” a song that features Shabazz the Disciple. If I didn’t know any better, I would think they were dissing Wu Tang, Nas and others. Trick or Treat?

TOMORROW, WE LOVE YOU!

They keep us talking, but if we stop talking about them then they should worry!

Nintendo Wii: Top Ten Current Games

As the holiday season looms ever closer, be prepared for a glut of new titles to hit the market. There are a few I’m looking forward to myself – Geometry Wars: Galaxies, Godzilla Unleashed and the new Super Mario Galaxy. In the meantime, don’t sleep on the following sure-shot titles which are currently on the racks.

10. Big Brain Academy Wii Degree

This cool collection of video quizzes tests your recognition and reaction time. The artwork is colorful while the minigames are varied in selection and difficulty. In addition, this is one of the few titles that use your Mii in-game, so I copped it early on and enjoyed it right away. My wife and I battle on this, and since it’s the Big Brain Academy whoever wins get to say they are the smartest. I stay winning.

9. Transformers: The Game

The movie was funky and this game delivers too. Out of all the Transformers games ever released, this one has the best mechanics and the most immersive game play. Furthermore, there were some very innovative ideas used in the military-like Decepticons campaign. Though not perfect, if you liked the movie or grew up with the toys you will probably enjoy this adventure title.

8. Super Monkey Ball

One of the largest collections of minigames on one disc (50 in total) the main game has you tilting the Wiimote to roll a monkey in a glass ball all over these crazy little courses in a manner that is deceptively simple and super addictive. It’s one of the nicer applications of Nintendo’s motion sensitivity.  The minigame gallery has some neat two to four player games like Monkey Wars, Monkey Race and Monkey Target. Critics have already noted that some of the most fun to be had on the Wii is in the multiplayer action and this game has plenty to spare.

7. TMNT

Armed with fists and wits, ninjas make great video heroes and this title is no exception. It has all the acrobatic challenge of the Prince of Persia series (the engine on which this game is built) and adds the charm of the Teenage Mutant Turtles. It’s a nicely designed platformer with some clever scenery and a few nifty minigames. Not incredibly inventive, but overall I enjoyed the hell out of this one.

6. Rayman Raving Rabbids

Rayman is the dude but the demonic Rabbids are the stars of this minigame spectacular. One of the first games I got for the Wii, I was impressed from the outset with the quality of the graphics and the ingenious variety of uses for the Wiimote they managed to pack into this bundle. Pretty much a light hearted romp, those dang bunnies love to dance but hate on Rayman mercilessly. After running through the story mode you will have unlocked 70 minigames of various length and difficulty, with the Warthog Race, Bunny Hunt, and the dance scenes being my favorites. One of Wii’s launch titles which still delivers, the soundtrack includes Naughty by Nature’s “Hip Hop Hooray” and Chic’s “Good Times” and good times is exactly what you’ll find inside. Wifey rides for Rayman, too.

5. Marvel Ultimate Alliance

If it wasn’t for comic books, Hollywood wouldn’t have half the ideas that they do. The same goes for video games. This particular game was a hit on every console. Perhaps the biggest game with the most Marvel characters in it ever (140 total), you get to roll on Dr. Doom and his associates in this well written Action RPG. Though this is essentially a button smashing dungeon crawler you will get to travel to a grip of locales made famous in the comic books like Asgard, Doom’s Latverian Castle, Murderworld and Mephisto’s Realm, just to name a few. The soundtrack works well with the missions and the voice acting is adequate. A well rounded game with up to four player cooperative options makes for a solid superhero purchase.

4. Trauma Center: Second Opinion

The doctor is in. This game is so fresh that they took it from the hand held version where it started and reworked it entirely for the Wii. A stand out title which defies comparison, anyone who enjoys an exacting challenge and appreciates anime cinema should seek this out.  Diagnosis: take one of these and call me in the morning.

3. Super Paper Mario

It’s no secret that many of Nintendo’s best games are made in-house, and Mario never disappoints. A brilliant use of the Wii’s graphic capabilities with colors and character designs so flashy and fresh, this is what the modern arcade should feel like. Super Paper Mario builds on the success of the previous Thousand Year Door offering for the GameCube and eliminates the crummy turned based fighting. Sort of an RPG and platformer combination, this is very imaginative with the different possibilities of flipping the screen from 2D to 3D to reveal hidden sections along with the “Pixls” you collect which all give a special ability, like shrinking extra small to go inside houses so little you don’t even notice them on the first pass. I think I spent 50 or 60 hours beating this game and I loved every minute.  It’s an added bonus that the story dialogue is actually funny with a lot of gamer inside jokes. If you’ve got pepper in your pants then you will fare well in this adventure.

2. Resident Evil 4

Easily one of the best video games to date on any platform, this joint was out on GameCube two full years before it came to the Wii. Between then and now it was ported to the PS2 and a PC version came out with total sales in the millions. Well worth the wait, the Wii release eliminated some funky control issues the previous platforms had and sped up the load times. More than just shooting monsters in the face and getting money, this game has puzzles, timed missions, and the craziest storyline. Critically acclaimed all around, this game is a steal; I copped it new for around 30 bucks. Superbly paced, there are some “oh snap” moments in the game that rank among my favorite cut scenes from any video game. The Wii edition is the definitive version and surpasses all competitors.

1. Legend of Zelda – Twilight Princess

My wife brought me this game for Christmas last year before we could even find a Wii in any local stores. Now, after 100 hours of game play, I am still running Link all over creation getting treasure and finding hidden areas. This joint is still in my console right now! One of Nintendo’s greatest franchises continues to deliver with this magnificent odyssey populated with a fantastic cast of characters and sprinkled with spectacular visual effects. The different items you collect have the zaniest uses, the puzzles are excellent, and the boss battles are surprising to say the least. One of the bosses is an enormous spider that sh*ts eyeballs! Zelda has come so far and this game raises the bar yet again for the new generation of gamers to marvel at the ingenuity of Nintendo’s superb art designers. Highly recommended, this is a perfect release in all aspects and one of the greatest of all time.

I know there are several other games that could have been included here.  For instance, I really like Rampage for the Wii, but mainly off nostalgia for the arcade version. Since it’s pretty thin on actual content, it didn’t make this list. Also, the Wii Sports isn’t mentioned because it’s free with the console, though it’s certainly one of the most popular packages for the Wii. A couple other obvious omissions, Metroid Prime 3, which I have had for a few weeks but haven’t played enough into it to really give a fair review (though across the board I’ve heard its well worth the scratch) and the Simpsons I just copped – it’s got jokes for sure.

Many of the above titles you can find used and save some scrilla for the forthcoming releases, all of which I am hungrily awaiting my damn self.  Lastly, cop a few of those wireless GameCube controllers since all of the GC games work seamlessly, plus you can get them for cheap! Happy gaming, y’all.

Russell Simmons Records Anti Dog Fighting PSA’s

Hip-Hop mogul Russell Simmons has teamed with the Humane Society of the United States and the BeKIND Foundation to create a public service announcement (PSA) speaking out against dog fighting.

Simmons, who has worked with agencies like People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) in the past. In the new PSA’s, the Hip-Hop mogul is featured in the :15 – :30 second PSA’s with Humane Society President Wayne Pacelle and BeKIND founder Frances Hayward.

Simmons’ PSA’s will speak out against dog fighting, a topic thrust into the national spotlight, in July when suspended Atlanta Falcon’s Quarterback Michael Vick was indicted for running a dog fighting ring.

Simmons, along with the Rev. Al Sharpton and PETA president Ingrid E. Newkirk sent letters to Vick’s corporate sponsors condemning dog fighting.

“The recent media spotlight on dog-fighting reminds us of society’s callous disregard for the suffering of animals and disrespect for sentient beings,” the trio wrote. “We hope that Mr. Vick is not a product of this insensitivity that runs through our society. . . . It does us little good to prosecute just those who are famous and allow people across the country to continue to commit these hideous crimes.”

Vick pleaded guilty to involvement in an illegal dog fighting ring and is scheduled to be sentenced on December 10.

Simmons’ PSA’s will be released via the Internet and traditional outlets.

It’s All In The Game: Five NBA Sleepers

The 2007-08 NBA season is up and running, and even though everybody has a clean slate, there are a few sure things that are likely to happen. You can count on the Suns and Celtics being tough, LeBron and KG are going to get theirs… but every season there are surprises, and there will be a few players who will have breakout years. Last year, Monta Ellis and Daniel Gibson were those guys. As for this year? Here are five players who might be household names come May.

Marvin Williams – Atlanta Hawks

Two years ago, Williams was the second pick of the 2005 NBA Draft. Picked ahead of Chris Paul and Deron Williams, the Atlanta Hawks forward has not come close to living up to his billing so far. He is in jeopardy of being labled the next Sam Bowie – the guy picked ahead Michael Jordan in the ‘84 Draft. But before you call Williams a bust, here a few reasons we think he won’t be. For starters he is just 21 years old. He only played one season at North Carolina and he didn’t even start! So he is still young and is still learning how to play the game.

Physically Williams has all the tools – he is an athletic 6-9 who can play three positions, he has a soft shooting touch and he has a good attitude. In the pre-season, Williams put up good numbers – 17 points and 5 boards per game. With an improved Hawks squad, this could be the year Williams blows up. Joe Johnson is obviously the man down in A-town, but don’t be surprised if the versatile Williams becomes the second option on the team as the season rolls on.

Dorrell Wright – Miami Heat

Drafted straight out of high school in 2004, Wright spent the majority of his first two years with the Heat in street clothes – appearing in only 23 games. Last season, he showed flashes of brilliance as his PT increased. Though he is still raw, Wright has handles, hops and a decent “J”. Shaq is aging and Wade is injury prone, so this is a perfect chance in South Beach for Dorrell. He must start capitalizing on his potential and prove he was worthy of that first round selection back in ‘05.

Louis Williams – Philadelphia 76’ers

Another member of the ’05 class, Williams was a late second round coming out of high school in Georgia. So far, his claim to fame was being boys with Bow Wow – he even appeared on B-Dub’s appearance on MTV Cribs. However, Williams has the opportunity to jump off the rapper’s coat tail and get his own shine. He proved in the last summer’s Vegas Summer League and Rocky Mountain Revue that he has game. The 6-2 guard used his quick first step to get to the rim at will – often finishing above the rim. He can also deliver the ball and run the team.

Williams has yet to develop an adequate three-point shot, but again, he is only 21. With Allen Iverson gone to Denver, there is no question Williams will get a lot of burn this season. So far he has impressed, dropping 33 in a pre-season game against the Nets.

Nate Robinson – New York Knicks

Out of all the players mentioned on this list, Nate has been the most proven player. This tiny 5-9 Knicks guard has electrified crowds with his unbelievable athleticism and scoring ability. But Nate the Great has also proven that he was immature. Cocky and loud-mouthed, Robinson has been criticized for his child-like outbursts with opposing players, refs and even his own teammates. The brawl against Denver last season validated his immaturity even further. On the court, there were also some issues. Robinson hogged the ball too much, was defensively challenged and had failed to prove he can play the point.

After teammate Mardy Collins emerged at the end of last season and with the Knicks bringing in three more guards in the off-season, it was looking like Nate was odd man out. But Nate responded to the challenge. Playing the point guard, he dominated the Vegas Summer League, earning MVP honors and leading his team to a perfect record. Then he spent the entire off-season working out in New York getting reading for this season. The hard work has shown so far, as he has played well in the pre-season and during the first few games of the season. Don’t be surprised if he starts over Stephon Marbury at the point at some point in the season.

Von Wafer – Denver Nuggets

Sometimes a player has to take a step backwards before they can go forward. After leaving Florida State early in 2005, Wafer was a second round pick of the Lakers. Clearly not ready for the big stage, he found himself in the D-League the very next season. Second chances rarely come along in this league, but Wafer has worked his way back up scoring a 10-day contract late last season with the Clippers.

Playing with Denver’s summer league team, Wafer took full advantage, torching the Knicks for 42. Wafer had an impressive pre-season with the Nuggets and could very easily replace the immature J.R. Smith in the rotation. The Nuggets are also a lock for the playoffs, so look for Wafer to get some serious shine this post-season.

Each album was assembled by Tupac’s mother Afeni Shakur and contains one unreleased song, one new remix and nine classic tracks from Tupac, who is the best selling rapper of all time.

B-Sharp: Music To Your Eyes

Music is all around us, whether it’s blaring from a Project window, banging out of the trunk of a passing car or perfectly nestled near your eardrum via your iPod headphones. Gregory Diaz and Kerry Granger, owners of B-Sharp Fashion, work to translate that music into their clothing. The duo began their partnership back in 2005 with a common goal of being “half a step above the competition.” The line’s foundation was built on their love and passion for the Hip-Hop culture, and that love for Hip-Hop is visible with every design.

We sat down Gregory Diaz and lead designer Crys Cash to talk about B-Sharp’s motivation, grasp on the direction of fashion and why they feel your closet isn’t the only place their clothing should be.

AllHipHop.com: B-Sharp is a clothing line birthed from Hip-Hop. Tell us about your apparel’s DNA.

Crys Cash: First of all, I’d like to say that the apparel is based on the music. I was raised on Hip-Hop. For as long as I can remember, Hip-Hop has been a major part of my life. What I do with each design is make sure that it dictates everything that I’ve seen in the past. I try to keep everything current and classic.

AllHipHop.com: How do you envision your product being worn on your consumers?

Gregory Diaz: When you wear B-Sharp, you can pretty much match it with anything. For example, the colors that we are using aren’t the crazy colors that everyone else is using; the purples, the oranges and all of that. So you can match B-Sharp with anything; boots, Air Force Ones, any style of footwear. Actually, what we try to do from time to time is find out which colors companies like Nike will be using. And sometimes we will use those colors within our designs so that it will match a lot better. All of our designs speak for themselves. We want for people to feel sharp when they are wearing our product.

Crys Cash: B-Sharp keeps everything fresh and presentable. We want you to be able to wear it at anytime, for any occasion. You can wear B-Sharp with Timbs, some Air Force Ones or your Jordan’s and still keep your fresh; you can even wear B-Sharp with a pair of suede Puma’s with fat laces or some Prada shoes. People should realize how important we all are to each other when it comes to fashion.

AllHipHop.com: What have you seen transpire in the world of fashion over the past year, that the average consumer wouldn’t have an understanding for?

Greg Diaz: I would have to say, history. Fashion always repeats itself. Right now, I can see that there are a lot more trendsetters, which is perfect for us, being a brand new company. But there are a lot of people who are getting into fashion now who don’t understand the history. There are people who don’t even know which styles they are wearing, when it was started and where did it come from. It feels like the ‘80s are back. You have trendsetters coming up who are like 15 and 16 years old, who weren’t around in the ‘80s to understand what they are doing when they lay their clothes out in the morning or before they go out for the evening; that history has repeated itself with them.

Crys Cash: I would say that people need to realize how influential Hip-Hop is on them, and the youth should realize how influential their aunts, uncles and parents are on their current style choices.

AllHipHop.com: Name one celebrity that if you find that they are wearing your product, you feel that you’ve made it to the big time?

Greg Diaz: I can name a few. I would have to say Jay-Z, definitely. But I’ll also have to say 50 Cent. 50 Cent really doesn’t wear other people’s product; he’s strictly G-Unit. So I think for someone like 50 to put on a B-Sharp t-shirt would be huge.

AllHipHop.com: The t-shirt is one of the most basic, yet crucial parts to complete urban wardrobe. What makes B-Sharp the best choice [for everyone]?

Greg Diaz: B-Sharp thrives on being different; our designs are extremely different. We have this sick designed called Crown Eye by Crys Cash, that nobody else could have thought of. We also have our #1 seller Mic Man which is a man made out of microphone pieces. We are different, definitely a half step above the competition.

AllHipHop.com: Tell us about your current progression at B-Sharp, and give us a peek into your 2008 line.

Greg Diaz: B-Sharp has been in place for the past two years. I feel that we have accomplished all of our goals, plus more. Our first line was Spring/Summer 2007, so for the first complete year we took care of our business. For our 2008 Fall/Winter line, we have some long sleeve sweatshirts. We have a new design called The Track Board which will be available on our site in a week. We’re also doing varsity jackets. As far as our 2008 line, consumers can be on the lookout for three amazing designs that we have. We’re working on two polo designs and also fitted caps.

Crys Cash: I just have to say that while other companies try to stand out, we’re unique. We like to keep things subtle and effective. At B-Sharp, we don’t try to stand out, we just do.

Derek Luke: The Good Fight

There is nowhere to go but up when you start your acting career in a leading role opposite Denzel Washington. Ten films later, Derek Luke is sharing opening credits with legends Meryl Streep, Tom Cruise and a man he calls ‘Bob’- director Robert Redford.

The United Artist/MGM release Lions for Lambs opens in theatres nationwide tonight [November 9], and Luke plays another strong and driven character, A#### Finch. Consumed by his patriotic duty to put his money where his mouth is, A#### volunteers to go to war. The War on Terrorism is a relevant and especially touchy subject to tackle, yet nothing short of characteristic for Derek Luke’s cinematic resumé to date.

Derek exudes confidence as he speaks superstars and Jersey swagger. He also claims to be on assignment by his generation, on the rise and at the top, all at the same time. It’s been a full year since we last spoke with Derek, so we linked with the Jersey native briefly this week to discuss his new work, the influences of his mother and community, and the ways Hip-Hop moves and inspires him.

AllHipHop.com: How were you and [Lions for Lambs] co-star Michael Pena able to connect so well on screen?

Derek Luke: We discussed the subject of the movie and where we stand on it, and basically we vibed on what we had in common. Michael is a great guy and has a lot of experience in different roles. Our chemistry lies in our similar goals and experiences.

AllHipHop.com: How did you research your role of the patriotic solider?

Derek Luke: I talked to a lot of active military men and women. The most interesting thing about these soldiers is that their opinions are sometimes totally different from the government’s. What I found out was that the people that have the least and [who have] the most difficult times in life were the ones that volunteered to serve their country. It’s not about the money. These people really feel that they are a part of this country and their words aren’t just words, there is action behind them. I look at the military and think how structured and disciplined they have to be. To be a solider is deep.

AllHipHop.com: You [worked] with Robert Redford, Tom Cruise and Meryl Streep. What did you learn from or about them during the filming of Lions for Lambs?

Derek Luke: Although me, Tom and Meryl had different schedules, I’d get dressed after shooting and go back into the studio to watch their rehearsals. Meryl and Robert would just be conversing and I’d be starring at the monitors, amazed. I learned that only passionate and emotional people can be actors. Tom is passionate in front and behind the camera. On the second day of shooting, I heard somebody on set call Robert Redford, “Bob”. So I had to get a chance to call him Bob. When one of my neighbors asked me to get an autograph, I went up to him and said, ‘Bob”…he turns to me and says, “What can I do for you Derek?” When he’s on set, he’s all about you and how he can help you do better.

AllHipHop.com: Lions for Lambs makes your eighth film and by 2008, you’ll have acted in 10 films. Which character was the most challenging and which was the most rewarding?

Derek Luke:  Patrick in Catch a Fire was definitely the most challenging role to play. He was a very challenging person. Antwone Fisher was the film that I enjoyed the most. It was my first time, and I just wanted to honor all the people that make it happen for me.

AllHipHop.com: Which directors are you looking forward to working with again, and are there any that you’ll like to work in with the future?

Derek Luke: I’d love to work with Denzel again. I hope he keeps directing. You know when chemists and scientists make the perfect type of fragrance? Working with Denzel felt like the right kind of fragrance. He’s easy to talk to and very down to earth and he uses his acting for a movement… for a cause, a message, and I’d love to work with him again. Of course, I’d love to work with Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg. Who wouldn’t?

AllHipHop.com: How did your dreams of acting start growing up in Jersey City?

Derek Luke: I got my swagger from the east; especially my slippery church shoes. I was the dude in school that didn’t have the best talent, but always got an “A” for effort.  I’d be the one singing my heart out in the choir, off-pitch, but still singing strong and hard. My mom was a single parent and she taught me to do the best at everything. I grew up listening to women and was always very passionate and expressive. When I would watch a show or a movie, I said, “I wanted people to feel me.” I always thought that I was on assignment for my generation in Jersey.

AllHipHop.com: How does music, especially Hip-Hop music influence your life and your craft?

Derek Luke: No matter what I’m doing, music shapes how I do it or how I say it. There’s a beat running through my head pushing me on. I listen to music to feel something and to express my emotions. I have to credit Hip-Hop for what I’m doing now, because the movement opened doors for Jersey brothers like me and I represent in everything that I do.

AllHipHop.com: Who are your favorite artists?

Derek Luke: Hands down, Nas and Jay-Z.

Hip-Hop Rumors: 50’s Arm Ain’t Broke! Royce & Fab End Beef! Kim Kardashian Gets Nude!

Yesterday’s rumors: Hip-Hop Rumors: Cam’ron Found! Jim Jones wilds out! K-Ci Gets Boo’d! Jay-Z Vs Dutch Rapper? College is so GANGSTER!

FIRST THINGS FIRST!

AllHipHop.com interviewed the legenary, infamous Frank Lucas (click here to read it!)…wow! Frank went all the way in on this one! You just have to read it.

He talks about Jay-Z and that “Frank Lucas is cool, but I’m not tryna snitch.”

Frank Lucas: Mr. Jay-Z, tell him to please watch his mouth.

Frank Lucas: I’m very remorseful. Sorry I did what I did. I did it. Wouldn’t do it again if it was laying out on the table for me.

Frank Lucas: When you are six years old and you see something like a Ku Klux Klan knock your cousin’s teeth out with handle of a shotgun and turn around and put it in his mouth and pull the trigger…

Frank Lucas: Nicky is lying. He’s making it up. He’s lying. I’m telling you, if I said there wasn’t going to be no Council, there wasn’t gonna be none. And I said there wasn’t no Council and there wasn’t no Council.

YOU HAVE TO READ THE WHOLE INTERVIEW!

I read it three times!

DID BUMPY JOHNSON LIKE FRANK?

The 93-year-old widow of Bumpy Johnson has spoken out against the depiction of her late husband and his relationship with Frank Lucas. Here is some of what she says:

When I heard that Lucas wrote a magazine article a few years back claiming that he was Bumpy’s right hand man, and that Bumpy died in his arms, I was upset. He lied.

Now why would Frank tell such a lie? Because he figures that since Junie Byrd, Nat Pettigrew, Finley Hoskins and Sonny Chance have all died, there’s no one alive to reveal the fact that he’s lying. Maybe he’s figured I’m dead, too. Well, he’s wrong – I’m 93, and old – but I’m still kicking (not as high as I once did), and I have all of my mental faculties.

Well, you know what comes next:

“Harlem Godfather: The Rap On My Husband, Ellsworth ‘Bumpy’ Johnson” will be the first complete biography of a man who for years was Harlem’s best kept, and most cherished secret. While most of the world is familiar with — and fascinated by — the organized crime organizations of the Italian, Irish, Jewish and Russian communities, this will be a rare glimpse into the organized underworld of African Americans.

Hurry up and get that money, grandma!

50 CENT’S ARM AIN’T BROKE

I know we’ve been seeing 50 Cent with a “cast” on his arm, but one of my AHH associates told me that’s not the case at all. From what I understand, 50 was actually involved in a motorcycle accident and scraped up his arm or something. It’s definitely not broken though.

50 CENT ARM WRESTLES A DUDE FOR HIS WATCH!

ALREADY? ROYCE AND MISTAH FAB END BEEF!

WOW! That was fast! I mean, these two were selling so many wolf tickets, I thought they were trying to start a West Coast / Mid-West beef! Nah, seriously I heard they got on the phone and ended the beef. I knew this wasn’t BEEF, just a pair of lyricists sparring. I heard the beef was ended with people like Big Hak from Peda Roll and Glasses Malone. Good deal.

KIM KARDASHIAN – WHAT’S THERE NOT TO LOVE?

She is a lady in the streets and a freak in the bed…and on tape! This is going to be excellent for the adults… “Kim Kardashian Superstar Part 2” is coming to you! (Absolutely no pun intended.) This thing is going to be a 100-minute sexual bonanza, where we get to see Kim at her wildest! I heard this one is super uncut and uncensored. It’s so uncut, I heard that Ray-J is still in there. Now, maybe they need a cut version? Anyway, this sucker is probably just as dry and wack as the last one, but you never know. Ray-J Wins.

CAM – NO SHOW, BUT THE MIXTAPE IS HOT!

Man, Cam didn’t even show up last night to give out his mixtape at the Apollow! What a bummer! Here is what the homey said to me about it (no spell check).

“I WAS WAITING INFRONT OF THE APOLLO WITH A BUNCH OF PEOPLE… LISTENING TO HIS NEW CD… CAM NEVER SHOWED… SMH… N#### SED 10… I WAITED TIL 12 (I SHOWED UP AT 9) DEN WENT BACK HOME… HAD US FREEZING IN DA COLD… ANYWAY I GUESS LIKE THE INTRO OF HIS CD SED… NYPD INTEL CHECKED UP ON HIM… ANYWAY THE MIXTAPE IS CRAZY HAD ME HYPE THE WHOLE TIME WAITING…”

JAY-Z TAKES OVER CHICAGO

So, Jay-Z made his second stop on his “American Gangster” tour last night in the Chi and according to my homey Kendra G. (Power 92 Chicago) Jay-Z took over the city! Jay-Z hit the stage at 12:20am with a live band and back up singers and rocked the stage for an hour and half. The sold out concert (tickets for the show in Chicago sold out in just 8 seconds!) took place at the House of Blues and the ecstatic crowd immediately through their “ROC” signs in the air once the Jigga man hit the stage. Jay-Z did songs off hisnew album as well as his classic joints. As expected, Beanie Sigel, Memphis Bleek and Freeway all made surprise appearances. I heard Beans forgot some of his lyrics but DJ Green Lantern was there to keep it moving. But the biggest surprise guest appearance of the night was Kanye West! Chi-town’s own was in town shooting his next video and made time to hang out with his “Big Brother”. Kanye took the stage and did two songs off his platinum selling album, Graduation. Jay-Z and Kanye on stage together was too much for the crowd to handle!!! Pharrell and Fabolous were also in the building. Without out a doubt Jay-Z took over Chicago last night and one thing was made clear…”If Jay ain’t better than BIG…he is the closet one!”

Shout out to Nia B – I got you next time, ma!

HEAVYWEIGHT SMOKE?

I can’t really go into details, but this conversation was being sent to me. I heard a certain former heavyweight champ was hanging out with Wyclef. Well, the champ was allegedly puffin’ a lil’ la la la when he left ‘Clef’s domicile. Well, the champ hops in a cab with a friend with puffery in mouth. Well, I heard that the cabbie was so heated that he booted the champ and his associate out of the cab. The champ stops puffing, but he still smells like Chronic cologne. Well, being the big guy that he is, a police officer stops him and gives him a ride. The friend, I heard, aborted the mission, because he saw an arrest on the way. Nobody seems to think that he got arrested, but I don’t think anybody’s heard from the champ either.

RANDOM QUOTES!

Jennifer Lopez finally cuts the crap:

“Marc and I are expecting. We didn’t want to say anything before because we didn’t want to take away from the tour, but we’re expecting.” (Next time tell the kid in your belly your plans.)

Chamillionaire on the reunion performance with Paul Wall (AllHiphop.com):

“He asked me to come out with him and perform our song and we just did it spur of the moment.”

DJ Drama defends T.I. (AllHipHop.com):

“You got to judge him by his whole track record. Don’t judge him by one event. Judge him by overall what he does and who he is. You got to look at his history. I mean the judge knew his history, the judge was aware of the things he does for the community, the kids, the schools, the youth that are in juvenile and detention centers and things of that nature.”

Lloyd Banks tells AllHipHop.com of his new record label:

“They can expect new material from me, group material, as well as Green Gang Records, what I’m doing next. I’m looking for artists right now, so if you’re hot, holla at me, make sure you get your music to me. That’s the next move.”

Banks also admonishes the antics in Hip-Hop:

“I mean, you tell me. When you start telling me that a n***a could put a butterfly on his eye or a n***a could claim to be a gang member and [not] really be, or a n***a could kiss another n***a in the mouth and it be okay, then yeah, it’s turned into entertainment.”

Jay-Z on why he won’t retire (VH1):

“I’m addicted to this. That’s why I’m still doing it. Its not my job. I’m hear, because I love it.”

ILLSEED’S QUICKIES

Don’t forget to check out the AllHipHop Top 20 Dopest Verses of All Time!

I saw what Wolf Boy said to Angie Ma about my rumor on T-mobile party. I do rumors. Simple and plain, but I can create news if necessary. I don’t create rumors though. If that makes sense, you know what I mean. Its not the AHH Staff, just lil’ me.

I know Prodigy of Mobb Deep has a date with the Beast, but I heard he’s submitted over 20 songs to G-Unit for inclusion while he is away.

I keep hearing this rumor: that both 50 Cent and The Game will appear on the same track on Dr. Dre’s Detox.

Rumors say, Trick Daddy is trying to get on The Unit, but is grappling with some old legal woes with his old label.

Eminem is about to be back. There leaks…I hear that Eminem is putting together one hell of a comeback album.

There is a rumor that Beyonce is looking to do a cover of Aaliyah’s “One in a Million.” Yes, this is a rumor, but there are already sites protesting.

Amy Winehouse’s house was raided by the UK police, because of some ongoing investigation! Leave her alone.

J-Hood cannot get out of his deal with D-Block, because they have papers on him. Looks like D-Block/The Lox are the new Diddy/Bad Boy. Maybe Hood should have waiting before he dragged the D-Block chain down the block?

RAEKWON ON RZA: “HE’S LIKE A HIP-HOP HIPPY”

This ain’t me talking – this is straight up Raekwon! See the interview below. Shout out to Ms. Information!

Lol @ the viewers comments. “where was the interview, at the courtesy inn? He got dome or some thing.”

RAEKWON PART 2: “DON’T ROB ME AND BE MY FRIEND.”

This is getting very serious! A Wu-Tang album with NO RZA – everybody but Rza!?!

ILLSEED’S LONGIES

So here, I have to devote a bit of space to a pair of super-duper long letters that I got. One is from my dude B-Daht and the other is from DJ A-Trak, who is the spin master for Kanye West. Both dudes are very, very cool brothers. B-Daht talks at length about what happened with Young Jeezy (remember the “Jeezy Banned” rumors?). A-Trak discusses the unfortunate incarceration of Seattle’s DJ DV One. Please take the time to read each of these, in the interest of TRUTH and JUSTICE!

B-DAHT SPEAKS:

On the 26th of October there was an afterparty for the A&T Homecoming festivities at Jab’s ultrabar. Young Jeezy was paid to do a “walk-through”. When he got there, he was rushed to the stage where a VIP “look” was arranged with chairs, a couch, bottles of all kinds of liquor, etc. Jeezy was given a mic and DJ Polo started to play Jeezy tracks, back to back.

People paid $25 for presale tickets, so you can imagine how people had to pay at the door. The commercials NEVEr said it was a walkthrough, and the average listener doesn’t understand all that anyways. Jeezy’s on stage, with a mic, and the people want him to perform. OFF GATE Jeezy’s pisst! He feels like they’re trying to MAKE him perform. So he addresses the issue with the promoter.

THEN, DJ Polo ACCIDENTLY drops the White Girls Remix with Gucci Mane in it. At that point Jeezy demands the music be stopped and gave DJ Polo a few choice words, over the live microphone, stating he was a ‘real n####” and did not appreciate being “played” and that “s### like that doesn’t happen in Atlanta” then demanded that DJ Polo “drop some m#### f###### music”….

around the same time one of his goons comes up to me and tells me not to shout out anyone in the club. The only people there are Jeezy and CTE. (I’m thinking the dude doesn’t want me to say anything about Gucci or something. I feel a LITTLE disrespected, like, “I KNOW not to talk about GUCCI at a JEEZY show!” so I just leave the stage and go host from the crowd)

At the end of the night, right at 2:30am or so Jeezy’s “guest” was leaving the building… when I saw the “guest” leaving I made attention to the fact I didn’t even know the “guest” was in the building QUOTE “Oh s###, I ain’t even know she was in the building” which drew attention to the “guests” presence…. i guess that was just the straw that broke the camel’s back for dude. He felt forced to do the show, Gucci got played AND I made comments regarding his “guest”…

I was called to the stage and as soon as I stepped onto the stage Mr Jenkins, followed by his entorauge, had my back to the edge of the stage and had me in a semi-circle. Couldn’t go backwards or I would’ve fallen off the stage, couldn’t go left or right and dead smack in front of me is Mr 17.5…..LETTING ME HAVE IT!!! From best I can recall, these are a few of his choice words…” Didn’t I tell you not to mention anyoine else? Well why in the f### woould you not listen? When I tell someone to do something, they DO IT! It’s about to get physical. I’m a real n####! Don’t nobody disrespect me like that! Now get the f### outta my face.” In the corporate world, I was threatened and verbally assaulted—- in the hood, I got punk’d by Jeezy. Either way it was f##### up. Jeezy was my dude. When I got to this station, I personally took Trap or Die to every DJ an Jock in the building going HARD for Jeezy (no h###)!! So for HIM to play me like that in front of my audience was a BIG blow….like Santa Clause cursing your ass out…picture that.

So I went on the air on Tuesday, October 30, and told my audience what happened. I’m kinda a big deal. The people called up and was on some Anti-Jeezy s###. I never told em not to listen they just felt disrespected for me! WE are the poeple that make this dude famous, the radio people, the consumer’s, the MEDIA of the Hip Hop world PERIOD! He just went too hard. So every hour on the hour was people calling the station, wanting to know the scoop, professing their support for the situation and all types of s###. I can’t front, I was ECSTATIC!!!!

THEN I go to the Haunted House that night and got the news, Yep, B Daht had made All Hip Hop!!! WTF!? Then it’s NC ain’t f###### with Jeezy cause he disrespected B Daht and Polo. S### was just moving soo fast! So I get home and get a phone call from who? A 4way call with Tap Money (our Music Director/Afternoon DJ) Waleed Coyote (Our Night DJ/Othaz Records) and Mr Jenkins (Young Jeezy/Mr 17.5)..WTF?!

Dude was telling me he was apologetic for the way he carried himself, although he meant what he said that night. He felt like the ENTIRE club was against him, the promoter, the DJ and the Host….I just happened to be the host. He said it was just a bunch of events that were bubbling and I caught the tail end. He apologizeed stating he was having a bad night but he never meant to be disrepectful… I have been having a bad night and blanked on someone who supports me faithfully. And i’ve had to humble myself and apologize…you NEVER want someone to be in the streets talking negative about you, regardless of the level you’re on. Jeezy understood that. Now don’t think i’m a naive lil guy, I know he got wind that there was a possibility an entire State was about to ban his music and that was going to effect his pockets tremendously and that AIDED in his decision to call, but at the end of the day, Jay Jenkins had to humble himself enough to call Brian McLaughlin and squash this stuff, and I respect and accept that.

So the beef is OVER. Which is sad a little bit, I could’ve made Wendy Williams and BETNews with this one!!

Just wanted to set the record straight though with you Illseed…. Big fan of AllHipHop so to see my own name on it was the S###! Sadly, by the time you were reporting all that, I had already spoken to dude, so I know he’s like “WTF?! Isquashed it with the ni99a, and he still blab’n off about it!” And that is not the case…i’m done with this s###….thanks for your time Ill, hoilla atcha boi, Pimp…Chuuch

A-TRAK SPEAKS ON AN INJUSTICE…DJ DV ONE

What’s up Illseed. I am a regular reader of your column, and I’ve also been featured on AHH myself (https://allhiphop.com/blogs/features/archive/2006/01/24/18133440.aspx). I’m writing to bring some attention to a tragic case of brutality and injustice served to my friend DJ DV One from Seattle, a black man and prominent figure in the Northwest hip hop scene. I’ve known DV for many years. Although we’re from different cities, we did a tour together 4 years ago and have stayed tight ever since. For as long as I’ve known him he’s always been a cool, righteous, positive, level-headed dude. He’s a long-time member of the Rock Steady Crew and I know that he’s been involved in a lot of community-centered activities. So when he called me 14 months ago and told me he got beat up by the police, needless to say I was completely shocked! Here’s the story he told me, as I recall it: in September of last year, he brought his 14 year-old daughter to a high-school football game. As they were leaving and he was talking to some friends, some cops used excessive force with his daughter who was allegedly obstructing traffic. His friends called his attention over to the scene and he came running but was stopped by a female cop as he got close. He identified himself as the father of the child, but she stood in his way; he said “that’s my daughter!”, she replied something like “and?”; he repeated “that’s my daughter!”.

At that point she reached for her flashlight. DV put his hands in the air, thinking she was going to strike him. Instead she got on her radio and called for back-up, claiming she got hit, which she didn’t! And suddenly a whole group of cops jumped on DV, threw him to the ground, kicked his face and his back in and tazed him twice!! All this was in front of his terrified daughter, mind you, as they verbally ridiculed both of them! The pictures of his medical report are horrific. DV is a big dude, it’s hard to even imagine the kind of beat-down that would bring such injuries to my friend. That’s his account of the story, and I believe him.

Then to everyone’s great surprise, seemingly to cover themselves up, the police slapped HIM with a felony charge, claiming he assaulted the female officer. The whole thing seemed unreal. But the event quickly caught the attention of the whole city, it was highly covered in the media and a prominent attorney quickly offered to represent him, assuring his that the police’s case had way too many loopholes and didn’t stand a chance. He even got support from the mayor’s office. From what I understand, the cops didn’t have any non-cop witnesses but this happened in the parking lot of a big football game. They took many days to file their report and there was no medical record of the lady cop’s alleged injuries. They gave conflicting reports on the event. By all accounts, as tragic as the incident was and as scandalous as the charges were, DV had a solid defense case on his hands and he was going to beat the charge.

It took a full year for the trial to happen, and DV kept his head up the whole time. At every hearing along the way, the courthouse was always full of supporters. And to the whole community’s huge shock and surprise, he was found guilty of “assault 3” a week ago. He will receive his sentence in December but could face up to 5 years in jail. Apparently the judge refused to give the definition of assault to the jury and it wasn’t made clear to them that the term implies an intent to harm. DV’s attorney spoke to the jury after the trial and apparently many of those who found him guilty said that they only

thought he tried to push by the officer to get to his daughter, which doesn’t mean he attacked her at all. Is this how the justice system works?? (Rhetorical question.) I am baffled. Please visit http://www.myspace.com/supportdvoneto read more articles on this matter, and of course to show your support. The hip hop community needs to know about this and DV needs our help.

Thanks Illseed… and keep up the good work, I read your column every day.

Frank Lucas: The Real American Gangster

Frank Lucas on what he hopes his legacy will be:“I’m very remorseful. Sorry I did what I did. I did it. Wouldn’t do it again if it was laying out on the table for me. My name is Frank Lucas and please respect me as such.”Frank Lucas has been highly respected for a number of things he has been: father, husband, businessman, and one of the leading drug lords in the 60’s and 70’s. These days, the 77-year-old North Carolina transplant is regarded as the “American Gangster” and his life is now an acclaimed film starring Denzel Washington, Russell Crowe and rappers like Common and T.I. A sizable segment of the population loathes Lucas for his drug dealing days, where he went so far as to transport near-pure heroin in the caskets of dead Viet Nam vets though the U.S. military. These days, he rejects the American Gangster moniker and is now seeks to do some good for all of the negative he’s contributed to the world, especially his drug haven of Harlem, New York. With all his illegal millions gone, he now denounces his gangster ways, but Frank Lucas is what he is and when you hear his gruff, abrasive voice recall the old days, you know he’s the genuine article. In this AllHipHop interview, he examines how he became the infamous Frank Lucas. He trounces commonly held street notions about rival Nicky Barnes and The Council. He discusses his son’s rap career. Finally, he’s also got a few barbed words for rap magistrate Jay-Z and that infamous line from “No Hook” from his hit album American Gangster.AllHipHop.com: At one point, I heard you were charging for interviews so I didn’t think we’d ever get to talk.Frank Lucas: I don’t never do too much for free, but hey…why the hell not? You don’t pay for your interviews? AllHipHop.com: No. I don’t get any money for interviews that I do. Frank Lucas: Why not? I hear you’re a super star.AllHipHop.com: [laughs] I’m somebody, but I don’t know about a super star. That’s you.Frank Lucas: That’s the word out there – super star.AllHipHop.com: [joking] Well maybe I should charge then.Frank Lucas: Let’s talk.AllHipHop.com: So, how do you feel you were represented in the movie American Gangster, which is based on your lifes and times in Harlem?Frank Lucas: Well, I said it once and I’ll say it again, I don’t have anything to say but good when you have Mr. Denzel Washington doing your part.AllHipHop.com: It’s a great movie, from my perspective. Frank Lucas: You saw the movie so there ain’t much I can tell you.AllHipHop.com: Who is the real Frank Lucas? Obviously, we’ve seen the movie, but its just that – a movie. How accurate is the movie?Frank Lucas: Through that whole movie, and the parts that Mr. Washington does, is 85-95% accurate. You can’t get much better than that.AllHipHop.com: The opening scene of the movie is a shocker to me. I know you’ve said on the record that you haven’t killed anybody, but how were they able to represent you that way?Frank Lucas: I told you it was a movie.  They’re gonna make their money regardless. You gotta look at it that way also, you know?AllHipHop.com: I get it. It stated in the movie that there is an experience you had before coming to Harlem where you experienced a lot of racism and hardships. Can you speak on that and how it affected you into what you eventually became.Frank Lucas: When you are a kid and you see something like that, you can’t help but affect your life. You can’t help but think that the whole world is trying to tear you down and rip you off. When you are six years old and you see something like a Ku Klux Klan knock your cousin’s teeth out with handle of a shotgun and turn around and put it in his mouth and pull the trigger… I mean, his face looked good, but you could put a cantaloupe in the back of his head [because the hole was so big]. That can’t help but affect you. I’m speaking to you now, but a little while ago I was feeling sick. Brains …brains…bone…blood…teeth…was all over the yard.AllHipHop.com: Wow.Frank Lucas: Did you read about why he got that?AllHipHop.com: Yeah, for looking at a White woman – “reckless eyeballing.”Frank Lucas: Yeah, you got it. Reckless eyeballing. I don’t even think that was in the movie, but that’s what it was. All that was for reckless eyeballing and that’s a damn shame.AllHipHop.com: That was crazy and that was in North Carolina, correct?Frank Lucas: Absolutely.AllHipHop.com: A lot of your family is from  North Carolina…Frank Lucas: All my family is from North Carolina…we all come from down there.AllHipHop.com: Do you stay in touch with your family at all?Frank Lucas: Heck yeah. I’ve always been a family man, always will be. I’m about family more than anything else in the world. Without family, you’ve got nothing.AllHipHop.com: You’re right. I’m close to my family too. How did you maintain the life in the drug game with a family? It’s not a lifestyle conducive to having loved ones. In the period of the movie you supposedly had a daughter that wasn’t depicted.Frank Lucas: It might be hard for some people, but it wasn’t hard for me. You mean, back in the money days, the glory days…that’s what you’re talking about?AllHipHop.com: Yeah.Frank Lucas: I did both. I matched them up real well. It wasn’t hard for me, not at all. They had everything they could dream about. They had everything. On the other hand, I wasn’t a happy camper, because I was thinking back and forth in my head, “What’s gonna happen when this is over.” AllHipHop.com: A lot of people ask, “Why didn’t you stop?” Can you answer that question now?Frank Lucas: I can answer it now, but I don’t know if it’s the answer you looking for. I didn’t stop, because my wife gotta get me to stop. Some of my family gotta get me to stop. Them laws [can’t make me stop]. They ain’t even know what I was – I went like 10 years before they even knew what I was doing. The law [police] is a lie. Always something. But anyway, my wife caught onto it like any wife would. She kept on digging and digging and digging and she caught on to it. And I kept telling her, “One more time, just one more time, one more trip, one more trip. I’m getting $3,000 for this one, just leave me alone.” Three thousand was a big load back then. I guess it still might be. I’m not in it no more so I wouldn’t know. I told [his wife], “Leave me alone. I’ma do this.” When you do that, you’re gonna lose big time. AllHipHop.com: How low did you get?Frank Lucas: What do you mean?AllHipHop.com: In the movie, it shows basically you losing everything. Was that the case? Typically there is a stash somewhere.Frank Lucas: I was down to zero; living like I was when I was six years old. I didn’t have no money, man. When I come out the joint, I could buy a pack of cigarettes and a cup off coffee – maybe.AllHipHop.com: At the end of the movie, when you get out, there is rap music playing. Was there a point, they were trying to make?Frank Lucas: You gotta remember when I went into the penitentiary, there wasn’t a such thing as rap music. There was James Brown, Aretha Franklin…they were popular then. “Bop, bop, bop” [rap music]– that wasn’t around then. The world was a different place when I come out.AllHipHop.com: What do you think about this? In real life, you were considered a gangster, but…Frank Lucas: I hope not.AllHipHop.com: What? You don’t want to be considered a gangster?Frank Lucas: No sir.AllHipHop.com: Why not?Frank Lucas: I went that route and it didn’t get me nothing. It got me a whole lot of clout and I hurt a lot of people. I don’t want to hurt people no more. I’m very remorseful for what I did. I don’t want to go through that road…I don’t want to do that again. AllHipHop.com: That’s a good message to send. I recently spoke to some people and they were asking me if American Gangster would be adopted like Scarface has been embraced by Hip-Hop. I told them no…the stories end differently. Secondly, you have expressed a certain amount of remorse. Frank Lucas: I have all the remorse in the world. I didn’t do it right. That was a terrible thing I did. Also, you gotta understand. Me and “Scarface” were in two different worlds. He was in the cocaine world and I was in the other world – the real dirty world. AllHipHop.com: Why do you say “the real dirty world?”Frank Lucas: Heroin is a real dirty business. That’s a horrible business to be in. People get up, get into that and they don’t come back. I’m not speaking on this [from personal knowledge], because I wasn’t on the s**t. But a cocaine user can do without it, they don’t have to have it. Heroin, you know you have to have that. I don’t know if that’s true or not, but that’s what I hear.AllHipHop.com: I know a few people in the music game that casually use it on the weekends and then they go to work on Monday. Frank Lucas: You can’t do that with heroin. You do that with heroin, you get hooked. You gotta have that every day. Every day is Sunday, Monday to you.AllHipHop.com: Your son is rapping now. Frank Lucas: That’s my son. For real, that’s my son.AllHipHop.com: How do you feel about him using your name to jump start his career in that manner?Frank Lucas: Hey, you know what? More power to him. If I could help him, I would, but ain’t much I can do, because I’m not out there like that no more, you know? I just hope he goes out there and has a great career, you know, and do the right thing. I know he is. He ain’t into drugs so I know he ain’t going to get into drugs. He’s old now so I don’t believe he’s going to get into it now.AllHipHop.com: They say Hip-Hop is the new dope game. Like all the street dudes are getting into the rap game to keep it legit, but still talk about their experience in the street. Frank Lucas: That could be true, but I’m not into rapping and all that kind of thing. I really wouldn’t know.AllHipHop.com: OK, no problem. This might be a rumor, but I heard that Nicky Barnes didn’t like his portrayal in the American Gangster movie. Frank Lucas: I don’t know. Let me tell you, I have no idea. I haven’t spoken to him since the movie came out. AllHipHop.com: Have you seen his movie, Mr. Untouchable?Frank Lucas: No, have you seen it?AllHipHop.com: No, but I’m trying to. I really want to see it, you know. A lot of us in the Hip-Hop Generation are fascinated by those times. Also, with all the rappers dropping names, we hear it but we don’t always get the story, whether it’s a movie, book or documentary. Now, we are getting some of the real stories. Frank Lucas: I heard its pretty good, Mr. Untouchable. Did you hear about it?AllHipHop.com: I’m reading the book, but I heard its pretty goodFrank Lucas: You know, when Nicky was out there, I know he did a lot of bad things, they treated him like a dog when he wasn’t out there [jail]. I heard after three months, he couldn’t buy a pack of cigarettes. They took all their money and dogged him.AllHipHop.com: Are you talking about The Council? [Nicky Barnes organized and strengthened his power base by uniting other powerful drug dealers called The Council.]Frank Lucas: I didn’t know nothing about no Council when I was out there. I wouldn’t play that. If somebody wants to be a Don or a Gambino, the other guy wants to be Al Capone. The other guy wants to be Frank Nitti. Hey, you turn around [and] you got a mess. There wasn’t no damn Council. I can tell you that right now. That’s not true. Anybody [contradicts] that, they lying.AllHipHop.com: What do you mean?Frank Lucas: I wouldn’t have stood for it, ok?AllHipHop.com: Say that again?Frank Lucas: If I say [there] ain’t no damn Council, ain’t gonna be no got damn Council. Believe me.AllHipHop.com: Well, why do you say that? There was this whole thing, this organizational chart and all that. Frank Lucas: I don’t care what they say. They can say anything that they want.AllHipHop.com: Are you saying that they made it seem like Nicky and The Council were more organized than they actually were?Frank Lucas: Of course they were. You know got damn well they gonna make it appear like they were all organized and that. I’m telling you there wasn’t no such thing. It was bulls**t is what I’m telling you.AllHipHop.com: Ok, ok. Well, that’s a popular notion that there was the Council. There is a whole organizational chart right in the front of “Mr. Untouchable.” Frank Lucas: Nicky is lying. He’s making it up. He’s lying. I’m telling you, if I said there wasn’t going to be no Council, there wasn’t gonna be none. And I said there wasn’t no Council and there wasn’t no Council. They wasn’t no Gambinos, no Al Capone’s or no Bumpy Johnson’s…no I wasn’t having that. AllHipHop.com: Now, you say you weren’t going to have that, but were you and Nicky rivals? With “Blue Magic,” you had a “better” drug product, but he covered more ground in New York than you. Am I correct in saying that?Frank Lucas: Hell, no you not correct. He ain’t cover more than nothing I did. It wasn’t good as mine, it wasn’t better than mine – it wasn’t nothing. I’m not bragging. I’m not bragging. I’m telling you how it was. If I was out there, I would have bought it [his own drugs].AllHipHop.com: A lot of you were considered businessmen. Frank Lucas: Yes, I had businesses and stuff, from North Carolina to New York. New York, I had a supermarket. North Carolina, I had 6,000 acres of land [for] farming. Hey, I was a businessman.AllHipHop.com: How did you maintain all your business and even your drug game? Did you have a tight grip on these other businesses as well?Frank Lucas: Yes, sir. In Los Angeles, Chicago, Detroit, Miami, [inaudible city], North Carolina, I had a lot of property and the government took every damn bit of it. They took everything I had, every dime I had. Put it like this, I wasn’t that smart of a businessman, because if I was, I would have put it somewhere they could [not] have took it. And I could have, but hell, I didn’t think they could take all those properties. My lawyer, Jeff Harper, told me they could not take nothing off shore [out of the United States], those bank accounts off shore. I believed what he told me and it cost me a whole lot of money.AllHipHop.com: I thought they couldn’t take anything outside of the U.S. Frank Lucas: Don’t you ever believe that, you hear? They want something, they go and get it. They went and got mine. I don’t care what they say. They went and got mine. I wish to the world [that they couldn’t] – I’d be super rich if I could get my money back. And I’d be super rich all over again.AllHipHop.com: Speaking of rich, can you tell me how much you took home from American Gangster for them using…Frank Lucas: Naw, naw, naw…that ain’t none of your business. I’m not gonna tell you that.AllHipHop.com: Alright, I wouldn’t expect you to.Frank Lucas: You didn’t expect me to, but you did  ask.AllHipHop.com: You can say no. I don’t mind you saying no.Frank Lucas: [laughs] I like you man. You alright. You OK. I’m gonna say what I gotta say my way and you do what you gotta do.AllHipHop.com: Hey, I respect, “No” more than a bullcrap answer.Frank Lucas: I’m not gonna give you no bullcrap answer. AllHipHop.com:  Jay-Z recently recorded an album inspired by the movie. He had a line on his song “No Hook” that was talking about you. I’m sure you heard it. Frank Lucas: No, I haven’t. I don’t listen to Mr. Jay-Z’s music, but please tell me what it is.AllHipHop.com: He says, “I’m more Frank Lucas than Ludacris” and Ludacris is a rapper. Then he says, “Frank Lucas is cool, but I ain’t trying to snitch.” Now, I know that you on record have addressed that situation, but…Frank Lucas: Tell that young man to watch his mouth. Please watch his mouth. Tell that young man to please watch his mouth. Mr. Jay-Z, tell him to please watch his mouth. You saw the movie?AllHipHop.com: I sure did. [In the movie, Frank provides information that leads to the conviction of crooked cops and Italian drug dealers. Critics say he offered information on others, a charge he denies.]Frank Lucas: Then you know what I did. You know exactly what I did. It was all in there. And if that’s what you call a snitch, then so be it.

Chamillionaire And Paul Wall Officially Reunite On Texas Stage

Houston, Texas Hip-Hop stars Paul Wall and Chamillionaire officially ended their long-running feud last night at Texas State University.

Chamillionaire is the headlining act on BET’s Black College Tour.

He took to the stage last night at Texas State University and stunned over 2,000 fans when he brought former rival Paul Wall out on the stage for a performance.

The duo performed the single “N Luv Wit My Money” from their collaboration album Get Ya Mind Correct as members of the Color Changin’ Click.

“I was up at Texas Southern University to watch my boy Lil’ Keke perform for BET College Tour and Chamillionaire was there too,” Paul Wall told AllHipHop.com. “He asked me to come out with him and perform our song and we just did it spur of the moment. The crowd was really shocked and excited when they saw us together up there. That was the first time in at least five years we preformed it together. ”

The rappers were affiliated with Michael “5000” Watts’ Swishahouse movement but signed a recording deal with Paid in Full Entertainment imprint, owned by Houston radio personality Madd Hatta.

In 2002 CCC released their debut album Get Ya Mind Correct, which moved over 200,000 copies independently and earned both rappers major label deals.

The group soon fell apart, due to money and artistic direction. The childhood friends refrained from badmouthing each other, but refused to speak or work together.

Paul Wall returned to Swishahouse and released two albums, while Chamillionaire launched his Chamillitary imprint, which is distributed by Universal Records.

In 2005’s Paul Wall’s The People’s Champ moved over 176,000 copies in its first week and topped the Billboard 200 chart, while 2007’s Get Money, Stay True debuted at #8 and moved over 92,000 units its first week in stores.

Chamillionaire achieved success in the Hip-Hop world as well.

In 2005 Chamillionaire’s The Sound of Revenge debuted at #10 on Billboard’s Top 200 chart, moving over 130,000, copies in its first week out.

The album also produced the Grammy Award winning single “Ridin’,” which is also certified as the best selling ringtone of all time.

In 2007, Chamillionaire released Ultimate Victory, which debuted at #8 on Billboard’s Top 200 chart and moved over 79,000 units its first week on the shelves.

The Last Word: Michael Jackson’s “Smelly,” Prince Fans Are Mad, and Chris Brown Runs a Math-a-Thon

What’s up, party people? Welcome to the end of the week. Say goodbye to another slow, but busy five days as we witnessed the face of King Tut, unrest in Pakistan amid emergency rule imposed by President Pervez Musharraf, Oprah’s devastation over the scandal surrounding her South Africa-based leadership academy for young women, Rudy Giuliani getting an official presidential endorsement by televangelist Pat Robertson, another line of toys being banned, and singer Trey Songz contemplating legal action against police who arrested him and his entourage following a show in Springfield, MA.Shout out to Zoey Koplowitz, a 43-year-old woman who has multiple sclerosis, who finished the New York City marathon in under 29 hours, singer Christina Aguilera, who finally confirmed that she is pregnant and the sounding boards for their never-ending quest to make a better version of me.So here we are…The Last Word for the week ending Nov. 9, 2007 1. Anthony Hamilton Gives His Best With Third Album Although he’s carved out a reputation as a soulful R&B singer with his first two albums, Anthony Hamilton may have waited to give fans his best. “I always felt my third album was going to be my best one,” said the crooner, who told Billboard.com that his forthcoming album Me will “make a statement.” “I don’t think I’m going to let myself down or the people down. It’s a nice transition; you can just see my growth from the first one and the second one to this one.” With Me, Hamilton offers a project containing songs that are “full of life and situations we all go through, the changes of men and women and relationships with God and family and children – and the political side of Anthony Hamilton that I speak out on in certain situations.” Mix in a cameo in Denzel Washinton’s new movie American Gangster (as well as two songs on the film’s soundtrack) and a yuletide collaboration with saxophonist Boney James on the musician’s upcoming release Christmas Present, and Hamilton is on course to end 2007 strong and start 2008 with a bang.  2. Chris Brown Runs Math-a-Thon for St. Jude Hospital While touring with Bow Wow, releasing a new album, and giving fans an early present for the holidays with his forthcoming movie This Christmas may be enough to keep ordinary entertainers more than a little occupied, Chris Brown is proving that you can never be too full with more food on your plate.  Especially when you’re down for a good cause. Such is the case with Brown’s latest video, which finds the singer working with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to encourage middle school students to take an interest in math and fund-raising while encouraging them to raise awareness and funds for St. Jude. The clip, which features parts of the video for Brown’s#### single “Run It,” is part of the St. Jude Math-a-Thon program. The singer, who visited the Memphis, Tennessee-based hospital last year, is a steady supporter of the facility. Last year, he raised more than $50,000 for St. Jude through donating proceeds from every ticket sold from his 2006 “Up Close & Personal” Tour.  Math-a-Thon participants receive pledges from family and friends after completing math problems. Money raised from the effort goes toward helping children with cancer and other diseases. Last year alone Math-A-Thon raised more than $22 million in 2006. This school year, the program is expected to raise more than $25 million. “We can all make a difference in the lives of others,” Brown said in a statement. “I’m proud to help St. Jude. I feel like I’m just a regular person helping out.”  Brown’s Math-a-Thon Live video will be shown in thousands of schools around the country.  3. Prince Fans Beef With Prince  Rule No. 1 of being a popular singer: Never bite the hand that feeds you. In this case, it’s Prince who seems to be taking his war with web sites that feature his music and videos to, of all people, his fans.  RollingStone.com reports that lawyers for the Purple One have issued cease-and-desist letters to Prince fan sites demanding that they remove all photographs, images, artwork, album covers, lyrics and fan-submitted pictures related to Prince, including ones of tattoos and license plates that refer to him.  In response to the heat, three of Prince’s biggest fan sites have united to launch a new web site called PrinceFansUnited.com. According to a press release from the site, the reason that the sites come together is to “fight back to what amounts to an injustice to the fansites and the very fans who have supported Prince’s career, many since the very beginning nearly thirty years ago.” The move is the latest development to occur since Prince’s recent hiring of Web Sheriff to crack down on YouTube, Ebay and other Web sites that offer his music and video footage. Although they hope that the singer will change his stance on the issue, the fansites state in the release that they “are fully prepared to defend their position in the proper court of law, as well as fully prosecute any claims to which they are justly entitled.” I’m a Prince fan to the fullest, so I’m keeping my peace and hope for a peaceful resolution to this. I would hate for him to get Morris Day and Jerome to track me down because of what I’m saying.  Let’s not go Crazy. Let’s all stay sane.  4. Amy Winehouse Gets Raided Well not quite. According to People.com, it was the singer’s home in London that attracted police on Thursday (Nov. 8). Winehouse, who was not arrested, and her husband Blake Fielder-Civil were believed to not be home at the time of the raid. Local press accounts stated that officers from the Metropolitan Police Service were seen entering the back of Winehouse’s residence in northwest London at the time. If you’re wondering why the cops raided the home in the first place, don’t look for it anytime soon as authorities are keeping mum. The only thing they are saying is that “Investigations are ongoing..” Add to that a statement from police saying four unidentified men ages 19 to 25 were arrested at addresses in east London on allegations of perverting the course of justice and we have another intriguing chapter in the Winehouse chronicles.  Stay tuned for the next episode.  5. Bob Marley and James Brown: Dead and Wealthy Bob Marley and James Brown may be six feet under, but the singers are not among the poor as they make the Forbes.com list of the 13 highest paid celebrities. Brown was ranked 11th on the list as he pulled in $5 million for 2006. Marley followed at number 12 with $4 million. Others who made the list included rapper Tupac Shakur ($9 million), actor James Dean ($3.5 million), Albert Einstein ($18 million), Peanuts creator Charles Schulz ($35 million dollars) and Beatles members George Harrison ($22 million) and John Lennon ($44 million).  So who’s the richest celebrity dead person? That honor goes to Elvis Presley, who earned $49 million. Dead and still ballin’. Must be nice.  6. Michael Jackson Reveals “Smelly” Nickname Over the years, Michael Jackson has collected a variety of nicknames. King of Pop, Jacko. Tito’s more popular and financially set younger brother. But the singer is fessing up to an interesting nickname that may surprise fans. One that was given to him by Quincy Jones, the man who produced his classic Thriller album. “Quincy calls me a nickname: ‘Smelly,'” Jackson said in the new issue of Ebony magazine, which hits newsstands on Monday (Nov. 12). “Back then, especially back then — I say a few swear words now — but especially then, you couldn’t get me to swear. So I would say, That’s a ‘smelly’ song. That would mean it’s so great that you’re engrossed in it. So [Jones] would call me Smelly.”  As if the nicknames aren’t bad, Jackson has practically spent his entire career in the rumor mill. So how does the 49-year-old singer deal with it, you ask? “I don’t pay attention to that,” Jackson said. “In my opinion, it’s ignorance. It’s usually not based on fact. Every neighborhood has the guy who you don’t see, so you gossip about him. You see those stories about him, there’s the myth that he did this or he did that. People are crazy!” Jackson’s Ebony interview comes amid reports that his Neverland residence has gone into foreclosure per a Notice of Default report for California’s Santa Barbara County. TMZ.com reports the foreclosure came as a result of the entertainer reportedly being delinquent on a $23 million loan as of Oct. 12.  7. Country Music Bug Bites John Amos Damn, damn, damn James! First Jamie Foxx, then Bobby Brown and Sisqo. Now John Amos has been bitten by the country music bug. EURWeb.com reports that the actor, who currently stars in ABC’s comedy Men in Trees, is gearing up to release a country music album.  The release, titled We Were Hippies, is part of a five-album deal Amos signed with Music Row Records Nashville. So is Amos, who’s best known for his roles as Kunta Kinte in Roots, James Evans in Good Times and my personal favorite Cleo McDowall in Coming to America, cut out to for the country music audience? Apparently so, according to Music Row CEO Gene Cash. “Country Music is all about storytelling. That’s what makes John perfect for this genre,” said Cash, who discovered Amos’ musical talents during several trips the actor made to Nashville. “We worked with him closely and helped him discover his singing voice as well. John Amos is country music.”  Those who pick up the album can hear Amos sing the title track as well as other Johnny Cash originals including “Hopelessly,” “Independence Day” and a tribute to the late county legend titled, “When Johnny Came to Town.” “I’m originally from East Orange, New Jersey and my mother and I would spend our summers on the family farm in Birmingham where I learned to ride horses listening to Johnny Cash and other great country artists,” Amos said. “To now be embraced by the Cash family in this way is a ride.” We Were Hippies is available for download at iTunes. I say again, damn, damn, damn James!!!

DIGITS: The AllHipHop Top 20 Dopest Verses Ever!

Ladies and Gentlemen: we , the staff at AllHipHop.com, have seen many lists over the past few years regarding who’s the best emcee, and what are the greatest albums of all time. We’ve decided to throw our hats into the ring and give you our consensus views as a staff as to the answers of these things. Enter: DIGITS, an ongoing series. The rankings are based on the number of reoccurring songs or artists appeared on a composite list. Songs with the fewest instances were eliminated First up: The 20 Dopest Verses of All Time.

How do you quantify dope? Is it the most lyrical? Is it the most emotionally raw? Is it the best delivered? Where does flow come in? How quantifiable is something so subjective? Sometimes a verse looks way better on paper than it does when you hear it. For this exercise, the dopest verse typically involves when an emcee abnormally blacks out on a verse. Sometimes it’s a highly lyrical performance. Sometimes it’s a relentless assault far beyond the walls of the 16 bar box. With such a list, you’d probably get a different 20 verses depending on the day of the week (we sure did). But we sat down and hammered out this list based on the first 20 that came to mind from each of us. Then we tallied up the ones with the most votes, and then battled continuously over which ones would be whittled down to the final list (in random order). Hate or love it, without further ado, AllHipHop.com’s 20 Dopest Verses of All Time!

(To hear the song in which each verse resides, just click the title of the song.)

“King of Rock”-Run DMC – King of Rock (1985)-First Stanza DMC Followed By Run

“I’m the King of Rock, There is None Higher!” Think about that. Yes there were 4 Beatles (Sorry Run). Only Jay could play an instrument, but the DJ aborted them as the group made a proclamation that would change the world and our lives forever. They didn’t wear costumes like most of the acts in the ’80’s. There weren’t even any non-MiJac Black people on MTV, much less Rap/Hip-Hop. The minimalist rock drums (You crazy for that one, Rick). The reverb on DMC’s booming voice, copied by so many afterwards. The rush of those guitars that pretty much deaded any disco powered Hip-Hop related music. The power of DMC. The swagger of Run. It’s iconic. It’s everlasting. It’s the greatest verse of all time in our eyes.

“Winter Warz”-Ghostface – Killah Ironman (1996)-Cappadonna Verse

Before he was a cabdriver, Cappadonna was a serious contributor to both Only Built 4 Cuban Linx and Ironman. On “Winter Warz,” he lost his mind and assaulted the pounding drum powered beat. Rhyming for over two minutes straight and seemingly out of nowhere as a cleanup hitter, ‘Donna switched from the Stapleton lingo (“1-6-0 4-9-3-11”) to the gutter and back. He doesn’t pause for a breath, he’s just relentless. He may not be on top of the overall emcee list, but Cappa’s “Winter Warz” verse is like Sleepy Floyd’s 53 Point NBA Playoff game: An all-time performance from a footnote player.

“Victory”-Puff Daddy & the Family – No Way Out (1997) Notorious B.I.G. 1st verse.

There are so many reasons why this verse is here. The last virtuoso performance of Biggie. The first salvo from a top selling, yet underrated album. Puffy’s suspense building intro combined with Rocky Balboa’s Championship pedigree, and then B.I.G.’s explosive abandonment of the slow flow that made him king. Arguably better than any verse on his last album, the power of the verse can be summed up in one stanza. “Warm nights I perform like Mike/Anyone, Tyson, Jordan, Jackson.” ‘Nuff said. We don’t know what’s on his tombstone, but no greater epitaph exists for his music career.

“Live At the BBQ” –Main Source – Breakin’ Atoms (1992) Nas Verse

The Streets Disciple was still nasty with no sign of Escobar. Just hearing it evokes a feeling of 40 oz’s, bodega heroes and blunts. Nas’ entry to our lives was full of the power of youth. Rich with imagery (“Shoot slugs from my brain just like a rifle”) irreverence (“I went to hell for snuffin’ Jesus”) and young rage (“Nasty Nas is a rebel to America”), Nas was definitely causing hysteria. While Main Source was NOT forever, and Akinyele went from dropping rhymes to bumping rumps, Mr. Jones would go on to greater heights as arguably the premiere lyricist of his generation. This verse was his entry and calling card.

“The Headbanger”-EPMD – Business Never Personal (1992) Redman Verse

Rough, rugged, and raw. Politically incorrect (clowning cerebral palsy!) hood pop culture referential (“Lullaby your stupid ass – Rockabye baby – shout to Keisha from “New Jack City”), and just flat out bugged, Redman was as raw as it got for a lyricist in his era. The cherry on top of a hardcore chocolate sundae, the cleanup verse was frenetic, comical, violent, and everything about Hip-Hop in that era, complete with the metaphors and similes. Respect is due and this verse keeps collecting.

“The Message”-Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5 – The Message (1982) Grandmaster Melle Mel 1st Verse.

Post-Civil Rights. Post Disco. Product of Reaganomics. Urban. Gritty. “Broken glass everywhere, people pissing in the corners, yo they just don’t care.” Mel took us from the parties in the club and took it to the mud. Mirroring Stevie Wonder’s abandonment of Berry Gordy-flavored bubble gum, Mel took that disco rap and slammed it in the grime. Yeah, he yearned for the color TV to watch the Sugar Ray fight, but “The Message” was the truth from the mouth of the Grand Master. Not from the Klan, but representing the Clan. The Furious Five. The world would never be the same.

“Puffin on Blunts and Drankin’” Tanqueray-B-Side to Dr. Dre ‘F**k With Dre Day’ Single (1992) Kurupt Verse

It was supposed to be a throwaway record. 7 Minutes which began with Dre poppin off of a G-Funked up “Impeach the President.” Nobody told that to the Dogg Pound. With apologies to Rage, who got the rhyme of the month when the bible was still sacred, Kurupt BLACKED OUT! Just relentless mic slaughter with wordplay, delivery, even spelling. It was brutal and unforgettable. It was Kurupt’s message to the East Coast: Death Row was for real on the mic. He edges Rage due to emotion and length, but the female lyrical murderer gets honorable mention for her own lyrical tornado on this.

“Raw”-Big Daddy Kane – Long Live The Kane (1988) 1st. Verse

You got a small taste of him on “Just Rhymin’ With Biz.” Cameo, Afro, Virgo, Domino. Well this verse on “Raw” brought another word virtuoso. Hardcore. That voice, so dominant. If you never saw Kane, you’d think he was 9 feet tall with the force of the terminator. Words were simultaneously smooth and rough. Subtle and powerful. Kane perfected both sides of the spectrum so well that the balancing act was in full effect. You got up and danced…cause Kane said so. The skill to ill and break and take. Long live the Kane.

“Straight Outta Compton”-N.W.A. – Straight Outta Compton (1989) Ice Cube

The shot heard around the world. ”When I’m called off, I got a sawed off, squeeze the trigger and bodies are hauled off.” There were others who were more outlandish, and others who were more authentic, but not many were more convincing. Ice Cube entertained and terrified those who were close enough to see, and enthralled those who were so far away they could only live vicariously through his verse. Down, with a capital CPT. This verse is the reason your parents hate rap music and is the progenitor of mainly everything we argue about concerning the life and death of Hip-Hop.

“The Symphony”-Marley Marl – In Control, Vol 1 (1988) (Kool G. Rap Verse)

Batting cleanup on a song with the Kane wasn’t easy but the Kool Genius delivered what many hail as the greatest verse of all time. Twice as horrifying as Vincent Price, D-evil (Before Hov) in a spell of a sleep, and while he’s counting his money you count sheep (Sleeping). It was verbal assault in its purest form. You couldn’t replace him , ice him or ace him. Base him face him slice him or race him. Indestructible on the microphone and rumors say he initially rhymed the verse until the tape reel popped. G rapped for so long the video had to cut a portion of his verse. The only rapper to have ever rendered Kane in his prime as anti-climactic on a track.

“Beast From The East”-The Lost Boyz – Love, Peace, & Happiness (1997) Canibus Verse

From nowhere, newcomer Canibus destroyed this track like the Knicks destroy the dreams of their fans. Even with a dope Redman verse, you don’t remember anything from this song but lyrical devastation. The fire in his voice. The raw lyricism. It was almost like the next stage of evolution. “I existed, in the Garden of Eden getting’ lifted, sticking d**k to Eve before she was Adam’s mistress.” All you could do was cover your mouth and go “Ohh, did you hear that!” 50 bucks says we can tell you exactly where your tape popped. Thank God for CDs.

“Triumph”-Wu-Tang Clan – Wu-Tang Forever (1997) Inspectah Deck Verse

Rhyming over the drums of war and blanketed by string instruments, Deck heralded the triumphant return of the Clan, passionately referencing Socrates, atomic bombs, forensic science and just about everything but the kitchen sink. On a double album with 8 other emcees with different styles, The Inspectah Deck had perhaps the most memorable verse of them all.

“U Don’t Know”-Jay-Z – The Blueprint (2001) 1st Verse

No more admiring the Jiggaman “from 4 fiends away,” The Blueprint represented Jay-Z’ s first real attempt to let us in. Even in an attempt to be more soulful, Marcy’s finest showed he’s at his best when he’s bringing the grit and the game at the same time. “U Don’t Know” is almost “Where I’m From” part 2, but with more passion and more force. Just Blaze on the boards gives Jay just enough fuel to blast off about the place where the hood’s swallowing (pause) and there’s so much coke that you can run slalom. Even when talking on the hood, Jigga throws in something like skiing to show he wasn’t your average hustler. Now you know.

“Time’s Up”-O.C. – Word…Life (1994) 1st Verse

The first call to arms of the Keep It Real Brigade. Previously seen batting clean-up on Organized Konfusion’s “Fudge Pudge,”O.C gives a stern warning to “those who pose lyrical but really ain’t true,” delivering a caveat to posers and rappers who present themselves as gangsters and thugs when their actual lives deviate from their rhymes. While skilled, O.C.’s career wasn’t been mainstream, but he spearheaded the underground vanguard and put fakers on notice: their time was up!

“Lyrics of Fury”-Eric B & Rakim – Follow The Leader (1988) 2nd Verse

He’s got more classic songs, and he’s definitely got more popular songs to reference, but the original god mc rarely showcased lightning fast mic crushing flow such as he represented on Lyrics of Fury. “Funky Drummer” powered, guitar enhanced, no hooks or funny business. Rakim switches flows, and rhyme schemes effortlessly with a punishing array of line after line. The second verse gets the nod over the other two for the energy, the pace, and “capable, breaks the unbreakable series that leaves you breathless. You don’t have time to clap to this. Just listen and let the rhythm hit you.

“Respiration”-Black Star – Black Star (1998) Mos Def Verse

B-Boy intro and melancholy beat segue into a robust Mos Def delivering his version of “The Message”. No longer Reaganomics, but the post Bush, Clinton era America highlighted by Giuliani dystopia masquerading as Disneyfied New York. Mos describes a Rotten Apple encapsulated by higher costs of living, a stock market tempting brokers towards dishonesty, and evening news casting urban as villain, and overall the everyman’s attempt to sift through the garbage and survive. The city was alive and breathing and Mos Def had his finger on the pulse.

“Dream Shatterer” – Big Pun – Capital Punishment (1998) 1st verse

“It’s Big Pun, the one and only son of Tony Montana, you ain’t promised manana in the rotten manzana.” So true in light of Pun tragically passing away due to complications of his massive gerth. Providing gargantuan lyrics every time he touched a mic, Pun was the beacon for Latinos in Hip-Hop who for too long were relegated to second string status in the rap game. The Boricua’s flow stole many a show [“Off The Books,” “Banned From TV,” et. al] but on “Dream Shatterer” he’s going for self, asserting skills knows no color in the process: “I’m the first Latin rapper to baffle your soul, master the flow, n***as be swearing I’m blacker than coal.”

“Elevators (Me & You)” – OutKast – ATLiens (1996) Andre 3000’s 2nd verse

Mr. Three Stacks was already flowing something crazy since he and Big Boi laid that Southernplayalistic music for your trunk. There is nothing too outerworldy about the track or the flow, but the beauty is in the simplicity of it all. Illustrating his position as a layman that has a superior rap ability with tongue and cheek chutzpah, [“True I got more fans than the average man but not enough to loot to last me/To the end of the week I live by the beat like you live check to check, if it don’t move your feet then I don’t eat, so we like neck and neck”], his job security is since no longer an issue.

“Born Killer” – Scarface – Mr. Scarface Is Back (1991) 2nd Verse

For the budding psychotic, Scarface provided the soundtrack of a lifetime. For the uninformed, he offered a glimpse in to the mind of a man tettering on the edge of insanity. Combine that with one Brad Jordan’s penchant for being one of the South’s finest and you have a verse for the ages. “My momma did her part / But it ain’t her fault that I was born with out a heart / In other words I’m heartless duke / I don’t love me, how the f**k I’mma love you?” With lyrics like these and a bar none mentality Mr. Scarface received a universal ghetto pass.

“Renegade”-Jay-Z – The Blueprint (2001) Eminem 1st verse

Absent the antics. Minus the mom mashing. No Hailey in sight, Mr Mathers’ lyrical gymnastics outshined S. Dot’s verse over the melody of the beat he himself created. The verse that made Eminem all good in the hood on a critically acclaimed album, and gave a true blueprint on how to flow yet deliver a message. Dropping with the bassline and rising with the background strings, then breaking the pattern for onomatopoeia, Mr. Kiss My Ass was certainly the Renegade on this joint.

T.I. Drops Bid For Thanksgiving Day Celebration

Chart-topping rapper T.I. has dropped a request to allow extra guests into his house for a Thanksgiving Day celebration.

T.I., born Clifford Harris, dropped the request today (November 8), citing strong opposition from prosecutors handling the high profile case.

Prosecutors claimed that T.I. was seeking special treatment and said that since his release, he has submitted a list with 95 names, making it difficult for court officials to conduct background checks on each individual.

The 27-year-old rapper is charged with illegally purchasing three machine guns and two silences in an Atlanta parking lot, hours before the BET Awards on October 13.

He pleaded not guilty to three charges of illegally possessing silencers and machine guns.

T.I. was released on $3 million dollars bond on October 26.
