Prison Inmate Lied in Recanted Testimony, According to B.I.G. Estate Motion

The recanted testimony of a man involved in the still-unsolved murder of rap icon Notorious B.I.G. is the focus of a newly filed federal court motion by the rapper’s estate. The motion, which was filed Monday (Oct. 29), claims that Waymond Anderson was lying when he recanted his testimony in the case that implicated former Los Angeles Police Department officer Rafael Perez in the March 9, 1997 killing of B.I.G. (born Christopher Wallace). According to the Associated Press, the motion asked for Anderson’s phone and prison visitation records.Anderson, a former R&B artist currently serving a life sentence for murder in a separate case, said in an Aug. 20 deposition that he lied as part of a scam involving Wallace’s family members and attorneys to win a monetary settlement from the city of Los Angeles. The phone and visitation records, the Wallace estate argued, will reveal holes in Anderson’s latest story and show who was behind Anderson’s “wholesale assault on the truth.”In his deposition, Anderson accused the Wallace family and their lawyer of offering to cut him in for a portion of any award for falsely testifying that Perez told him that another ex-police officer, David Mack, was involved in the Wallace’s killing. The motion is the latest in a series of twists and turns in the case. In a new interview with AllHipHop.com, Kevin Hackie, a former bodyguard for the late Tupac Shakur, revealed that an arrest for the murder will soon be made.”LAPD detective Greg Kading concurred with me that there will be an arrest in the Wallace case shortly,” he said. “Greg Kading who’s status with the LAPD and you can quote this is confidential, said there will be an arrest made shortly.”

Project Pat: Money Matters

Mista Don’t Play a.k.a. Project Pat has been enjoying the good hood life since his 2005 release from prison. The Memphis-native recently spoke with AllHipHop about his “Adventures in Hollyhood” with DJ Paul and Juicy J of Three 6 Mafia, how he feels about the direction of music from the Dirty South to where the East Coast went wrong to T.I.’s recent federal case. With Walkin’ Bank Roll due to drop October 30th with guest appearances from the Hypnotize Minds camp and Pimp C, Mista Don’t Play really don’t play at all, as he dropped his jewels as well as gave his opinion on the difference between the street life and the slow grind. AllHipHop.com: What’s been going on since Crook by the Book?Project Pat: Oh well, you know, we’ve been working on “Adventures in Hollyhood,” working on my new album and Three 6 Mafia’s new album.AllHipHop.com: Describe what it was like filming “Adventures In Hollyhood” for MTV.Project Pat: I got involved in it because I’m Hypnotize Minds affiliated and we just trying to get more exposure and get our faces on them TVs. A lot of stuff behind the scenes they didn’t show. A whole lot of stuff. Stuff like Treice Ray… just a whole lot of stuff.AllHipHop.com: Was it renewed for a second season?Project Pat: We got put in for a movie for it. Yeah, we’re going to make a movie out of it. God keeps blessing us down here.AllHipHop.com: You’ve been a known dirty south rapper for a while now, how do you feel about it being in the mainstream and where do you think the sound is going?Project Pat: Well, I’m gonna put it to you like this right here, one thing about the dirty south is that we real stubborn in our ways. You know how they say “South people are set in they ways,” so the thing is as far as the music and the rap… the South gon’ keep it forever. See, where New York messed up is they gave it to us and they ran the game all day but they didn’t let them other little towns, little cities get on like Connecticut, Boston, and all those little surrounding cities. If it wasn’t New York, then nobody from New York was trying to hear it. See in the South we don’t roll like that. We let everybody get on. We want everybody to get a piece. We don’t care. We not trippin’ baby, you know that there. Arkansas ain’t came out yet, Oklahoma City ain’t came out yet. You got plenty of people that ain’t came out of Memphis yet. Nobody came out of Knoxville or Chattanooga yet. I know some dudes in Johnson City, Tennessee, up that way; them boys are off the chain. They gon’ come out and when they come out, we gon’ buy it. We ain’t gon’ boo ‘em. We gon’ put ‘em on down here, we ain’t trippin’. As long as they talking about this money, this shine and looking good and hustlin’ and gettin’ it, that’s all we want to hear. And also, I want to say this, I don’t know who in the clown was but it was some guy up on the East coast talking about down south rappers is like bubble gum rappers. Well, I think he needs to start chewing a whole pack of Hubba Bubba because that’s what’s selling out here. All this ol’ Hip-Hop has no meaning, man, kill yo’self. It’s lots of money out here; we ain’t trying to think about that. Quit playing games, n***as got kids out here and the kids gotta eat. It’s got plenty of meaning. I’m feeding other folk and people around me are getting jobs and money for they kids. Now one thing about down South like I said earlier, people got they own styles in the things they do. We got a lot of styles in the South and we don’t trip. People support each other and it’s all good. As far as the sound, it’s getting more on dances now and hustlin’ in streets. And you always gotta be talking something about that money. See down South, we ain’t complicated. You ain’t got to be dotting your I’s and crossing your T’s in the dirty. We ain’t gon’ trip on that. We don’t say girl, we say guhl. Man, quit trippin’! We bringing our styles to the game and guess what, they diggin’ it.AllHipHop.com: Talk to me about your upcoming album Walkin’ Bank Roll. Any special guests or favorite tracks?Project Pat: Man, I got my boy Pimp C on there and Three 6 Mafia is on there. Me and my boy Pimp got a song on there called “Talkin’ Smart to the Pimpin’.” And it’s some flames on here, you know. It come out October 30th with the number one hit single in the United States called “Don’t Call Me No Mo’.”AllHipHop.com: How do you feel about T.I. and his possible federal charges? Aren’t they similar to what you went through in 2001?Project Pat: They exactly what I went through and it’s a shame. It’s a godforsaken shame. You know, that’s a hardcore blow to the South and I hate it from the bottom of my heart. I pray for the man and I truly believe that God is going to bring him out of this situation. But man, I’m gonna tell you something. You just got to be watchful out here, you know. I ask everybody that gets in the car with me “You got a gun on you? You got a gun on you? You got a gun on you?” I gotta know man because you can’t be riding with me because I don’t know man; I’m not having it. See dealing with rappers down South we got a lot of street poets. And for a street guy to have a gun is like waking up in the morning, that’s nothing. Now if the police pull me over for that, he’s arresting me. I got caught with two, a .44 and a .22 revolver and I said to myself, Memphis got a lot of crime. Memphis is guttah, it’s going down. It’s been bad; you know what I’m saying? We got plenty of gangs. Memphis is not a white-collar city; it’s a gangsta town. And this real talk, the drug dealers and killers could be riding down the street and they could be signing autographs. They got the fan-base in my city. To a dude that’s coming from that, old habits are hard to break. You just gotta be smart, man. The robber got the gun to your back and the police got they gun to your face. It’s like being between a rock and a hard place. It’s real out here but I mean in his situation, it could have easily happened to me. And a lot of people don’t understand, they say, “He could’ve did this and did that,” but believe you and me; I was in the same situation. I had bodyguards and all that but at the same time, my mind was “Can’t nobody protect me like me.” So I feel the brother, you know what I’m saying. I hate that it happened like it did. AllHipHop.com: What do you want to let him or people in the same situation as him know about what they’re about to go through?Project Pat: If there’s anything I’d just tell the brother man because he seems like a real spiritual man, just turn it over to God. God gon’ work it out and however way it’s lookin’ don’t go by looks, just go by what you’ve prayed for. And stand your grounds on what you’ve prayed for because God gon’ give it to you. Real talk. AllHipHop.com: Is there any advice you’d like to give these young boys out here that look to the streets as their only way of life?Project Pat: Well, you know, I’m gonna tell you this right here; the streets are not the only way of life. It’s a proprietor of the devil. And I tell my people that the key to my success is that I pay my tithes and offerings. The real dudes in the street, these real guys, we respect God. We real, we know the business. So I tell these guys to put it down and give God a try. Turn your life over to Christ man, that’s real talk. That’s [the] only way you gon’ make it out here. That’s the only way I’ve seen. That’s what got me out the hood. That right there and taking initiative, slow grind. And when I say slow grind, just go on ‘head and get you a job and just slow grind it, man. Because that slow money is fa’ sho’ money. AllHipHop.com: Anything else you’d like to share to the public?Project Pat: I want to say let’s send some prayers up for T.I. and hold your guns and expect to come good because a lot of people be talking negative and it hurts. A lot of people are like “ah, he shouldn’t have done this and he did this…” but hey, it’s done now so quit talking like that. Send something to his lawyer. Real talk, quit talking about the man so much and speak something good. Pray for the man or something; don’t be sitting around here just talking. And I want to also say that you need go pick up this album Walkin’ Bank Roll coming out October 30th. Trick or treat man! Go cop that, real talk! Now while you copping Walkin’ Bank Roll go on head and cop the entire Hypnotize Minds catalog!

Wynter’s Tale: Random Thoughts

Generally when an artist or writer gets hot, a lot of people jump on the bandwagon and then the cool thing to do is to be the person that finds something wrong with what’s popular. Blogging has made it increasingly popular and easy to hate on artists, because bloggers have the option to remain anonymous. Cyberspace is an environment where generally uncool people can appear cool by saying almost anything that they wouldn’t say in a confrontational environment. I say all that to say that The-Dream is the current hot artist/writer of today and I’ve recently seen a few blog sites that had negative things to say about him.

Now I’m not jumping to his defense, I just want to give my objective opinion about him. He’s dope. I had the opportunity to work with him earlier this year (before “Umbrella”) and witnessed his genius first hand. He would listen to a track, step out the room, come back in five minutes with a melody and a hook….and it sounded dope. Once the hook was put down, he would almost freestyle the verse and the song was done. The-Dream is a hit record maker and its no coincidence or mistake that he’s been responsible for some of the biggest records of 2007. I’m not saying these things because I’m down with him (aside from our few studio sessions I don’t know him), I’m not signed to Def Jam (shout to Atlantic Records!), and I don’t need any records from him (I love my writing more than

anyone else’s). This is just one artist appreciating another artist. My song writing process is a lot slower and sometimes a bit more collaborative…..check the video below:

Speaking of one artist appreciating other artists, I want to briefly list a few of the up and coming artists that need to be acknowledged. If you want to get a headstart on who are some of the hottest new artists then be on the look out for: Boxie, Kevin Michael, Jaiden, Lydia Caesar, Jayms Madison, Robbie Nova, Duo Live, and the incredibly talented Karina Pasian. These are artists whose music or talent I’ve been exposed to and who I think will do well.

In my own development as an artist, probably one of the most difficult things that I’ve had to endure was the criticism that comes with being different. This summer I toured with Keyshia Cole who is a dope R&B artist. The challenge for me was that I’m a bit different in that my vocal tone is somewhat crossover/rhythmic. In my attempts to adapt to her audience, I would tailor my show a little bit different and in the end it didn’t really work out. One of my biggest lessons coming off of that tour was to be me, commit to me, and never compromise for anyone. This rings true because I’d rather people hate me for being me than love me for being someone else. Check me out being interviewed by my sponsor Drjays.com after the tour ended.

After the Keyshia Cole Tour ended, Craig Kallman (Chairman and CEO Atlantic Records) started calling me very often and becoming more hands on with the

development of my sound. This type of attention was much needed because I certainly needed the confidence boost after the rough summer. So since the summer, I have been working feverishly to finish this album. One of my techniques for always being ready in the studio has been my morning vocal warm-ups/devotionals. Check me out singing gospel/Disney tunes first thing in the morning….yes, it really was 6:45 in the morning!

Silly right? Lol.

Well in addition to songwriting, singing, and being an all around silly person, I am an internet addict. I spend most of my downtime watching random stupidity on

youtube, laughing at the hilarity of crunktastical.blogspot.com, or relishing in the guilty pleasures of concreteloop.com, theybf.com, nahright.com and bossip.com. And while I love these sites because they make me laugh, they deserve special attention because they helped spark the Jena 6 debate before it became cool. If you pay any reasonable amount of attention to my music then you’ll notice that I do take my social responsibility serious.

In a world plagued by global warming, violence, racism, and classism, its my goal to be an artist of substance.

Well for more random thoughts or silliness, you can check me out at http://www.myspace.com/wynter85 or http://www.youtube.com/wyntergordontv

Crime Mob Song Ignites Multiple Fights At Harvard

Two people were arrested as police struggled to keep the peace while students knucked, bucked and fought Saturday (Oct. 27) during a Harvard Society of Black Scientists and Engineers (HSBSE) step-show after party in the Lowell House dining hall at Harvard University. The partygoers, who were not Harvard students, were taken into custody for disorderly conduct, according to the Harvard Crimson.According to the newspaper, fights ensued after the party’s DJ played the Crime Mob hit “Knuck If You Buck.”It was during this time that Northwestern student Jarred M. Watson saw firsthand the change in mood among the partygoers.”That’s a song where everybody goes wild,” he said. “The crowd started touching each other and bumping into each other. Then I saw a whole bunch of people screaming, and I saw people fighting.”Soon after, Harvard University Police Department (HUPD) officers and HSBSE members quickly began to evacuate the crowd, said HSBSE president Devin D. Smith, who added that the DJ was asked to turn off the music and turn on the lights as soon as the fight began.More than 20 police patrol cars, including six state police cruisers and several Cambridge and HUPD cars, were deployed to the scene as additional brawls broke out in the Lowell courtyard.Despite efforts to resolve the situation, police continued to have difficulty. The two people taken into custody were later released without charges, said Cambridge police spokesman Frank T. Pasquarello. The fights capped off an event that attracted at least 400 guests from Harvard and other colleges, including Boston University, Boston College, Emerson, MIT, and Lesley University.Although the fights disrupted the night’s festivities, no one was injured, Pasquarello said.

National March Scheduled for Black Female Torture Victim

National march scheduled November 3rd for young, Black female torture victim—So if forcing a young, disabled woman to eat dog and rat feces, drink urine from a toilet and lick up her own blood while sexually assaulting her and making statements like, “This is what we do to ni**ers around here,” doesn’t constitute as a hate crime, then what does? This is the question attorney Malik Shabazz of Black Lawyers for Justice (BLFJ) is asking on behalf of his client, 20-year-old West Virginian Megan Williams, who Shabazz says has suffered “one of the worst hate crimes in U.S. history.”  Apparently, Logan County prosecutor Brian Abraham believes adding hate crime charges would be “difficult” to prove and chooses to focus on making sure that all six defendants – Frankie Brewster, 49; and her son Bobby Brewster, 24; Karen Burton, 46; her daughter Alisha, 23; Danny Combs, 20; and George Messer, 27 – are convicted of kidnapping, which carries a life sentence and first-degree sexual assault, which can add an additional 35 years. In September, Williams was kidnapped and held for approximately one week in the home of Frankie Brewster, enduring beatings, being stabbed in her leg, choked with a noose around her neck and her hair ripped out. [Carmen

Williams (right), mother of Megan Williams, told the Associated Press,

“I don’t understand a human being doing another human being the way

they did my daughter.” Photo credit: AP.]An anonymous tip from someone who witnessed the abuse led the police to Brewster’s mobile home, where according to the Associated Press, an extension cord ran from the home to the cramped shed, which she was held in with a portable stereo, a locker and a power saw.The case is “something that would have come out of a horror movie,” Logan County Sheriff W.E. Hunter said.Brewster, who was charged for first-degree murder in the past and the five other suspects, have racked up 108 criminal charges since 1991.Federal authorities have handed the Williams case over to the state with no charges coming from them. BLFJ and the Williams family along with a reported 100 organizations, including the Nation of Islam and the New Black Panther Party, are organizing a march for November 3 in Charleston, where the state capital and federal courthouse are located, hoping to galvanize the same media support and community outrage that recently took place in Jena, Louisiana.  “The number of outright hate crimes and injustice cases against Blacks is rising so rapidly it’s hard for our office to keep track,” Shabazz said on his website Blacklawyersforjustice.org. The website lists hate crimes reported at the University of Maryland, in Pittsburgh, Long Island, North Carolina and Washington, D.C. “We are calling for every concerned person in our community to respond to this national crisis with vigor and due diligence. The November 3rd march in Charleston is a big step in the direction of organizing to challenge the tide of attacks occurring against Blacks.”Schedule of EventsFriday, November 2nd 7:00 p.m.A pre-march remembrance/prayer vigil will take place at the Logan County trailer home where Megan Williams was kidnapped and tortured.Saturday, November 3rd 10:00 a.m.Gather at the West Virginia State Capital BuildingSaturday, November 3rd noonNational March Against Hate Crimes, Charleston, West VA. E-Swift: The Return of Tha Liks

It’s

a treasure when a group birthed in the early ‘90s can still come together

to create classic music for 2008. Such is the case with Tha Alkaholiks

who, despite recording their “final album” and embarking on a drawn

out ‘Farewell Tour,’  are still recording

together.

Talking

to DJ E-Swift, it’s clear that not much has changed besides their

location. J-Ro’s been living in Sweden, Tash is still in Cali, and

Eric Brooks is now out in Las Vegas, where he purchased a home and

took a little hiatus to watch his son follow in his musical footsteps.

But

despite the distance between them, E-Swift is still in the lab going hard on the

boards, building his cache of beats to shop, as well as putting together

his long awaited solo album. A recent chat with AllHipHop.com finds

him taking a stroll down memory lane, as well as dispelling all myths

that Tha Liks’ reign on the West is over.

AllHipHop.com: You’ve come

a long way from the days when you were rocking house parties in L.A.

How does it feel in hindsight, realizing you career is going on 20 years?

E-Swift: You know what? I think

about that every morning when I wake up, like “Wow…” It was just

something that I did for the love of it, cause I loved music. Now twenty

years later I’m making a living off of it, and man it’s a blessing.

That’s just God’s work. I didn’t have aspirations of being a performer,

producer, DJ, and all that when I was little.  It was just something that

happened, and I’m glad it did.

AllHipHop.com: To briefly go

back for those that aren’t up on Tha Liks history, you guys were always

kind of a novelty for the West, but early on cut your teeth on some

definitive tours with A Tribe Called Quest, Ice Cube, and damn near

everybody throughout the ‘90s.

E-Swift: Yeah man, we were

really known for our stage performance. When I came out, I was deejaying

for King T, who was on Capitol Records at the time. That was big, and

I got to travel the world with him and get seasoned for Tha Alkaholiks,

and it seemed like it never stopped. Once I hit the road, I just stayed

on the road. It was cool though, I worked with a lot of the greats coming

up, been around a lot of people and learned a lot.

AllHipHop.com: What was one

of the things you really learned from back then?

E-Swift: Back then coming up,

I learned you really have to handle your business, and no one’s gonna

look out for your best interest more than you are. As far as being a

producer, I definitely learned how to be more productive and not just

sit around the studio like it’s a playground. I’m going to work

when I’m officially in the studio. A lot of people back in the day,

before they had the ProTools and the home studios, they used to go to

the studio and pay all this money every hour. Hourly in the studio not

making any songs, that’s money out your pocket. So I learned early,

get your own studio with your own equipment and be self-sufficient.

I rely on being really self-sufficient and I don’t rely on anybody

to make a move.

AllHipHop.com: What are some

of your fondest memories from those years, looking back on those tours?

E-Swift: You can get a group

like King T and Ice Cube and sell out a 10,000 seat arena in a heartbeat.

And the music back then to me was more genuine. Of course rappers were

starting to make money and all that good stuff, but a lot of rappers

out at that time was doing it because they had it in their veins. That’s

what they wanted to do, they were rappers. They really cared about the

art form, and they represented Hip-Hop to the fullest. Nowadays a lot

of cats are looking at it like “I’ma come with this joint, it’s

gonna be real catchy, I’m gonna sell a lot of ringtones, and I might

tour for a month or two until my single dies.” A group like Tha Alkaholiks,

we can tour year-round without even having an album out cause our fan base

has been built over the years.

So my fondest memory of back

then is probably just seeing Hip-Hop grow as a culture and hit the road

full time. We’d be doing shows with Biggie, we toured with Tribe Called

Quest and De La Soul was like our first major tour as Tha Alkaholiks.

They invited us on that tour, and I remember paying a lot of dues man.

They were all in the nice fancy tour buses, and we were taking turns

driving a rented Cadillac with all our luggage in it. But we’d be

beating them to the venues, get on stage and kill it. They respected

us for that. After grinding like that, finally at the end of the tour

we got a tour bus. But we paid a lot of dues driving all over the country

to concerts. We were real humble, and we had no shame. Sharing a room

and all that good stuff man. Those was the good ol’ days. (Laughs)

You haven’t paid any dues unless you’ve driven across the country

in a Cadillac touring with Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul, rockin

the house in front of thousands and thousands of people. That’s Hip-Hop.

AllHipHop.com: You guys obviously

got a lot of love on those tours, and props from all kinds of artists,

but was there ever any conflict with another artist or group in all

those years?

E-Swift: You know, we’ve

never had any kind of run-ins with anybody or made any kind of enemies

coming up in the game. That’s just pretty much cause that’s our

personalities, we’re not here for all that. We’ve always been here

to make music and have a good time. That’s why when you hear our songs

and you think about Tha Alkaholiks, listen to our CDs or whatnot, we’re

all about having a good time. We carry that with us in our regular,

everyday lives. That’s pretty much why we get along with everybody.

All the cats from New York always thought we were from the East Coast,

cause we didn’t sound like a typical West Coast group. So they treated

us like brothers and still do.

AllHipHop.com: Speaking of

New York, what was it like when you first collaborated outside the family

with Heltah Skeltah for what would be the final track on Nocturnal

E-Swift: That was a blessing

man, I was just grateful that they looked up to my work like that. They

invited me to New York to record the song at the legendary D&D studios,

and for me to be in there with legends like Premier, linking up with

Easy Mo Bee, Diamond D, cats that I look up to and to have them look

at me the same way I look at them…it was a trip. I got to really hang

out and work with some of my favorite artists, it was wonderful man,

I can’t even describe it. I’m still a fan of Hip-Hop! If KRS-1 comes

to town, I’m in the front row. I’m a fan of Hip-Hop period, and

I’m a real humble dude. I go to these joints with all these backpack

rappers and underground cats and they look at me like a legend. And

I look at them like, “I’m down here with y’all trying to have

a good time and hear some good rap music.” So going to New York, where

rap music started, it was like paying homage. It just felt good to be

a part of that whole culture, and that movement.

AllHipHop.com: Now Tha Liks

are officially split, but that in itself took a while to really happen.

E-Swift: Here’s the thing.

We’re just taking a little hiatus from Tha Alkaholiks because we all

had separate projects. We’re still together touring as a group, and

we’re even in the studio together recording material. But for over

a decade straight, that’s all we did was tour and make records. We

never really got a chance, aside from Tash’s solo album [Rap Life],

we never had the chance to do a lot of stuff individually. So we all

just agreed to chill for a couple years and work with each other on

different projects. But we’re still strong, we’re still Tha Alkaholiks

together forever, we will have another new album coming out. It wasn’t

a gimmick like “This is our last album, go buy it cause this is your

last chance.” We didn’t want it to be looked at like that. It was

just a little hiatus, letting a lot of the b####### music pass through,

and then we’re gonna come back strong. Watch out for us man, we don’t

stop. (Laughs)

AllHipHop.com: I saw you guys

on your Farewell Tour, and then it was more than a year for Firewater

to even drop.

E-Swift: Yeah, it was like

the never-ending Farewell Tour man. We’ve been saying “Farewell”

for like 20 years. People like “I thought y’all said goodbye?”

Nope, we’re still saying goodbye. It’s a long-ass farewell. And

when we drop another album we’re gonna have another Farewell Tour,

cause nobody wants us to come back. (Laughs) But as long as the love

is there, and the people continue to support us, we’re gonna be around

for a long time.

AllHipHop.com: So even though

you guys amicably went separate ways for a minute, you’re saying there’s

a possibility that Tha Liks might get back for another album. Is that

something that’s been discussed? E-Swift: J-Ro moved to Sweden

like two years ago, which made our last release very difficult cause

the formula wasn’t all the way there. It took a lot more work than

usual. So when we’re together we work, and when we’re apart we work

on separate things. So when J-Ro gets back out here, and everybody gets

their individual projects done, we’re definitely coming with a collaborative

effort. Matter of fact, a lot of people don’t know this, but the whole

Likwit Crew is getting together to put out our long overdue album. Everybody

from Tha Alkaholiks, Xzibit, Defari, Madlib, Lootpack, everybody. We’re

like the legendary Likwit Crew from the West Coast and we haven’t

really put out an album yet, collectively that one major album. We’re

focusing right now on doing shows together, touring, having fun, and

getting back to the basics of being together as a crew. Everybody’s

had their careers and a lot of success individually, but collectively

I don’t think we can be stopped. So we’re getting ready to take

over the West Coast music scene with all these groups together to show

people how Hip-Hop music is supposed to be done.

AllHipHop.com: Now that everyone

is up to speed, what else is good with E-Swift in ’07?

E-Swift: Right now I’m in

the lab working on my solo album that I’ll have complete early next

year, which is basically me bringing in a lot of new artists over my

production, as well as my whole crew and getting everybody involved.

Besides that, definitely making a lot of beats for upcoming records.

Outside of my own camp, I’ve never really put a focus on outside production

cause you always want to keep the best stuff for your crew. So it wasn’t

in our interest for me to be doing a lot of outside projects, but now

I’m taking advantage of that cause I get a lot of requests for production.

As well, I’m developing my own artists and my label Street Soul Music.

I’ve got a 22-month-old little boy, so I’m being a father raising

him and giving him a good start in life. He’s getting ready to be

the next big producer to come out, I already got his little studio in

his room. He’s got a little keyboard, drum machine and all that stuff,

so he’s just practicing right now. He’s be two in January and he’s

already playing keyboard. He’s about to be a monster!

Hip-Hop Rumors: Foxy Stealing Beats? Likwit Reunion? 50 Cent Rumors!

AYER [Spanish for Yesterday]!

Don’t forget yesterday’s rumors! Hootie HOOOOOOOO!

Rumors 1: Hip-Hop Rumors: Was Tip Set Up? Pac’s Noose False? Jay-Z’s New Video!

Rumors 2: Saigon’s New Fight? Soulja Boy Mad? 50 Cent’s New Beef?

FOXY BROWN AND KOCH STEALING TRACKS?

Man, the drama doesn’t stop with Foxy Brown, even though she is in jail! In the latest mess, Jha Jha (the first lady of Dip Set), is claiming that she got jacked for her track by Fox and Koch. Anyway, the good people at Bossip said that her song “Lights Out” was stolen from her and turned into Foxy’s next single, “Lights Go Out.” They sure sound very similar. Jha Jah said that she gave her version to Koch in like March and now she can’t get a hit back. I can only assume that Foxy and Kochy are gonna get slapped up with a lawsuit.

X TO THE Z AND THE LIKWIT CREW TO REUNITE?

I heard a little rumor that the Liks, King Tee and Xzibit might be reuniting in the near future. I know some of you tight jeans wearers might be a bit young to remember, but these guys had a strong force in Hip-Hop at one point in time. Also, X to the Z had a recent birthday party in Vegas and the guys got together. This included King Tee, Tha Liks, Dafari, Ras Kass, Cold 187 (Above The Law) and others. I’ll be happy to see this reunion.

RANDOM QUOTES

Irv Gotti on why 50 Cent should have never messed with Kanye:

“We was Goliath and he was David. He came at us at a time when we had had three strong years of radio. It was the perfect time to come at us. He had his music right. He should’ve been smart enough to know, don’t — with David when you’re Goliath or he’s gonna slay you.”

Duke Da God on Jim Jones comments about Hell Rell:

“I read them statements too. You know people make statements. I can’t explain why people say what they say you know?…Cam is the boss, Jim is the boss, you know what I mean, and everybody else plays their role in the room. So I really can’t comment on the “why” he said something about Rell. I guess it probably stems from something Rell said about Jim. In all fairness, none of that other stuff means sh*t because I know how Jim really feels. I know how he feel. He had to get that off his chest. I don’t think it was in no disrespect to Cam, nothing like that.”

Click here to read the original interview Jim Jones made the statements. And also read the review of Hell Rell’s CD.

50 Cent to AOL Black Voices on Nas’ album title N-Word:

“Nas sucks. It’s nonsense, man …that’s a stupid name. It doesn’t make sense. Why would you title it that? … It’s just for shock value.”

(I don’t know the origins of the first two quotes.)

LIFE GOES ON – TRAE!

Listen to me: any rapper that gets down with Nirvana, is cool with me. That’s right Trae does that unthinkable on the mic. Check out the trailer to his new album, Life Goes On. Shout out to Trae. You are the N-Word of the day. (SIKE!)

SOULJA BOY MAD PART 2

So, whoever was in the crowd really got under Soulja Boy’s thin skin. He got so mad that he gave the dude the middle finger from the stage and just walked off. What’s worse is I heard that the DJ put on his new song “Soulja Girl” and the crowd got hype. Soulja made the DJ cut the music off, I heard…and soon thereafter he left! The song was just playing with his song in the background. Well, he’s the man right now. I guess he doesn’t have to take crap from anybody not even North Carolinians at A&T! [:D]

ILLSEED’S QUICKIES

Check out the diss from Mistah FAB to Royce. I like Fab, but Royce is an animal in a diss war. This won’t be anything like the AHH battle at SOB’s.

Remember that rumor that 50 Cent got into a fight with an actor on the set of his new movie? Well, that was no fight. They extended a fight scene in the movie and the rumor ran wild.

50 Cent shot a video in a warehouse in NJ for that song “I Still Kill.” I personally think he should have done one for “Man Down.” Check the vid preview below. I heard G-Unit has a few vids coming out too.

Check out this interview with 50 Cent on Fox. They didn’t even try to crucify him, but even mentioned Kanye West. Click here. (Patrick aka CzechMob.)

Last night Freeway had a listening session in New York. I heard Beanie showed up to support.

Kid Rock gets off easy. No charges will be filed for his fight at the Waffle House in ATL.

Did you know that Rihanna’s “Umbrella” was originally for Mary J. B.? I don’t know if it would have worked for the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul.

Lil’ Wayne said he WANTS to get Eminem on his album. It is getting late with a release date in Dec. 18.

Damn. The Game and Big Fase didn’t mend their ties. I heard Fase said that he never heard a peep from his baby brother.

SIGNS THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END

You know, just when you think people can’t get any dumber, some bozo goes for the world record. My boy Leon sent me this picture of some dude having a jolly time making fun of the Virginia Tech Tragedy. And “they” had the nerve to protest Nas when scum like this in eating at their dinner tables and partying with Mrs. Tig O. Bitties. (OK, John Gibson, O’Reilly and your pitbull women sidekicks – all together now – lets raise some hell!)

AKON GETS CANNED!

This time it wasn’t his fault. I’m sure they will find away to blame Hip-Hop.

R&B star Akon’s concert in Atlanta, Georgia has been cancelled after the stage mysteriously collapsed. The collapse injured some innocent bystanders. This was a gig at Emory U and a bunch of students and a musician were hurt after one side of the stage broke down. Akon wasn’t even around, but he’s the man in the headline so people can try to make a correlation.

IGNORANT ISH YOU LIKE!

Check this dude out, he goes hard at rappers, girls, babies in the game as well as music networks. Nobody is exempt. (Only thing is…Hip-Hop has a D-Nice, Dee-Nyce.) Dissing in the name of being positive.

WANNA SEE KIM KARDASHIAN’S SISTER MORPH BEFORE OUR EYES?

Hoe: Zero to 50. Just fast forward to right around 50 seconds into this video. (that actually might be Bruce “Face-Off” Jenner’s kid.

AMERICAN GANGSTER AIN’T ALL HARLEM!

Who remembers “Mo’ Betta Blues,” which offered the hot jazz song “Harlem Blues?”

Denzel Washington, Spike Lee, Wesley Snipes and others all in one flick? Crazy! Check it.

WIPE OUT – AND NOT THE FAT BOYS!

This skid took a huge L (like 40 feet!), but I heard he got up and walked away.

ILL PICS!

I’ll tell you. Prodigy is hardcore, son. He went to a Halloween party and poked fun at his 3 and half bid in jail.

Pharrell is with Nigo. I just don’t know what to say.

Paris Hilton went to a Halloween party too. It looks like she’s poking fun at her sex tape with the “night vision” blue contacts.

Serena – classy – very classy.

Just a taste – Lauren London! Number 69…I see you.

Hezekiah: I Predict A Riot

When it comes to sending a message that begs the attention of the soulful music-minded, rarely does the City of Brotherly Love disappoint. The likes of Jill Scott and The Roots are true testaments. So naturally, Hezekiah and his forecast: I Predict a Riot (Soulspazm/Rawkus) fit like a glove with the Philadelphia shtick. The title alone conjures up images of a revolutionary movement. With music as his imaginary picket sign, Hezekiah seems to yearn for change not only on the radio but in reality. Two years after his Hurry Up and Wait debut, the Illadelph representer has returned with double the emotion. The album unfolds with a smooth saxophone and thumping drum rhythm on “Wild & Wreckless,” where Hezekiah reestablishes his point of view. “They say if you ain’t got a prison record you can’t sell a record…Go ahead show your teeth ni**a show them your necklace/Lord knows what they’ll do to get on the guest list.” The sound of I Predict a Riot weaves in-between jazz, soul, Hip-Hop and funk. But somehow, it all blends together appropriately sealed with the inner city blues that dominates his verses. Hezekiah spans from lyrically muted to verbally raucous on tracks like “That Filling” featuring Freeway. Free delivers an aggressive set of bars that tears into the naysayers. Hezekiah adds his equally charged two cents he credits as “So hostile and so Gospel,” over a wailing sample. The soft-spoken rapper also spits at level 10 on the conga filled “If One Falls.”Bilal layers his howling vocals on “Looking Up” with a twinkling beat as the backdrop for Hezekiah’s vulnerable testimony. Aside from Jaguar Wright, the R&B side of the album features hooks from low-key singers like Muhsinah and Aaron Livingston. The prominent bass and gentle vocals on the love-struck “Let’s Get Involved” yield a mellow break up-to-make up anthem. “I’m at Tiffany’s taking the ring back/Come on love, you know I ain’t mean that,” he says in a nostalgic tone.Hezekiah’s rapping skills are pretty strong, but his most compelling dynamic is his production style. The largely self-produced I Predict a Riot is highlighted by heavy drums paired with colorful horns, strings, and well-tailored background vocals. A chameleon of sorts, Hezekiah sprinkles aspects of J. Dilla, Hi-Tek and an earlier Kanye into his beats.  Live instrumentation upgrades every track including the standout “Bombs Over Here,” a musical melee that makes for a jazzy surprise. The force of the lyrical riot tapers a bit toward the end of the album but luckily there are few to skip over.  We could do without the predictable “Single Now” and the interludes but even those were tolerable. There is enough variety to satisfy and hold the attention of even the most fickle listeners. The album’s progressively conscious themes probably won’t lead to a demonstration but hopefully people will rally around Hezekiah’s most obvious cause, good music.SOUNDCHECK:

NBA 2007/2008 PREVIEW: Southwest Division

Let’s get started with the Southwest Division, the most brutal division in the NBA.

San Antonio Spurs

Projected Starting Lineup:

C Francisco ElsonPF Tim DuncanSF Bruce Bowen

SG Manu Ginobili

PG Tony Parker

Coach: Gregg Popovich

The good: They are the NBA Champions… and with an improved roster.

The San Antonio Spurs may be the last interesting champion in sports.  If you ask the Spurs, they don’t care.  Led by team leader Tim Duncan, the Spurs always have a shot at a ring.  However, it was point guard Tony Parker aka Mr. Eva Longoria’s evolution as a basketball player that clinched the Spurs their third title in seven years and for Parker, a Finals MVP award.  A healthy mix of youth and veteran leadership is a great recipe for championships, which is what the Spurs have excelled in since 1999.  Their additions were few, but forward Ime Udoka had a solid season for the Portland Trail Blazers and will be mentored by defensive genius (or dirty player to some) Bruce Bowen.  The Spurs’ style may bore some, but if boring equals a championship, then the Spurs are showing that it doesn’t pay to be flashy.  Fundamentals still count for something and Duncan epitomizes that.

The bad: They could not keep international superstar Luis Scola.  That cost the Spurs a shot at 70 wins.

OK, I’m reaching here, but it just goes to show you how well Gregg Popovich has been able to maintain a steady influx of talent.  Luis Scola might very well be the best player that has never played in the NBA right now.  Originally drafted by the Spurs in 2002, everyone was waiting for him to help out the Spurs, but buyout issues with Spain forced them to deal him to the Rockets.  Shame, because he alongside French prospect Ian Mahimni can keep the international flavor of the Spurs going as they continue to improve from within.

Robert Horry might be entering his final season as a Spur and father time is creeping up on Michael Finley and Brent Barry.  Tim Duncan needs to remain healthy as he has struggled with plantar fasciitis in recent seasons.  He’s 31, but an old 31 after being beaten down on the block for the last decade.  They are without first round pick Tiago Splitter out of Brazil due to contractual obligations to TAU Ceramica.  He could either help next season or become another Scola.

The outlook: 2nd in the West, 1st in the Southwest, and a loss in the conference finals, making them a rare dynasty in that they cannot win two titles in a row.

Dallas Mavericks

Projected Starting Lineup:

C Erick Dampier

PF Dirk Nowitzki

SF Josh HowardSG Jason TerryPG Devin Harris

Coach: Avery Johnson

The good:  This was the best team in the NBA in the regular season.  They have the firepower to do it in the playoffs.

The Mavs finished with a 67-13 record, placing them in the conversation for best teams of all time during the regular season.  Led by MVP Dirk Nowitzki, the Mavs were steamrolling over their opponents… that is unless you happen to be a member of the Golden State Warriors.  This season, they bring in savvy veteran Eddie Jones to provide some defense and now fully hand the starting job to point guard Devin Harris who signed a lucrative 5 year deal this summer.  The sleeper player on this team could very well be Jose Juan Barea, former guard for Northeastern.  He possesses the same skill set as the Raptors’ Jose Calderon.  If he has a Calderon-like effect, this team can be even more dangerous.  Josh Howard should continue to become one of the better small forwards in the West, and with newly acquired swingman Trenton Hassell, they now have a way  to prevent Kobe from scoring 50 points a night.

The bad: Soft teams never win championships, and the Mavericks follow the way of their leader, who is soft.

The fact of the matter is, this team choked.  Only one team had a mental edge on them and that was the team they had to play in the first round.  Their lack of heart and defense cost them big time and many critics wonder if it is because Dirk Nowitzki doesn’t have the heart to take this team to the summit of the NBA.  Dirk Nowitzki needs to prove to everyone that his MVP award was not a fluke.  Devin Harris needs to show to everyone that he is deserving of that nice pay raise despite not doing much statistically. In a conference where there are many good point guards, he needs to stand out.  Their centers need to be a solid force and not an easy 6 fouls every night.  DeSagna Diop and Erick Dampier along with Dirk are the big men on this team.  They need to play with a toughness this team lacked last season.  During the regular season, they can play without a sense of urgency and have good regular season stats.  Maybe this year they might want to play their starters near the end of the season just to keep the pressure on the rest of the league.

The outlook: 3rd in the West, 2nd in the Southwest, I predict another first round matchup with the Golden State Warriors.  Don’t worry, this time you exorcise your demons to an extent and get knocked out in the semis.

Houston Rockets

Projected Starting Lineup:

C Yao Ming

PF Luis ScolaSF Shane BattierSG Tracy McGradyPG Steve Francis

Coach: Rick Adelman

The good:  This is the best talent Tracy McGrady has ever been surrounded by in his career.

Tracy McGrady has never made it out of the First Round.  Everyone remembers his press conference where even he doubted himself.  Ever since he’s been in Houston he has had to deal with average teams, recurring injuries, and a loss of hope.  Well this year could actually be different.  All-star center Yao Ming is back with a mean streak.  Aside from the Boston Celtics retooling and the Minnesota T’wolves imploding, one can argue the Rockets had the most active and productive offseason.

They re-acquired Mike James from the T’wolves for Juwan Howard, drafted Aaron Brooks in the NBA Draft, hired a new coach in Rick Adelman, and managed to sign former Rockets star Steve Francis after being paid $30 mil by the Portland Trail Blazers to go away.  They went from having no point guard to having too many (they currently have five and are expected to cut two of them).  The biggest addition was adding international star Luis Scola in a trade with the San Antonio Spurs.  Although Scola is 27, that means he is ready to contribute now and could be a dark horse candidate for Rookie of the Year.  As long as T-Mac remains healthy, doubt should not cloud his mind.  The Rockets may not be the best team, but they are the most dangerous one.

The bad:  With all of these new additions, they’re still not settled on a point guard and unsure of whether they can become an elite team in the West.

Tracy McGrady has played alongside the likes of Vince Carter, a gimpy Grant Hill, and now Yao Ming.  The team makeup this season is very good, but there is a question as to who will be the starting point guard.  Steve Francis has returned to the place that made him a superstar.  If he continues to be the Steve Francis that the New York Knicks knew, that helps no one.  Also, Mike James and Rafer Alston are talented, yet erratic point guards.  If they don’t get their act together, they will be benched in favor of rookie Aaron Brooks who might not be ready to take on the challenge of getting T-Mac and Yao out of the first round.  After watching preseason, it is good to see Yao playing aggressive.  But luck needs to be on his side and his legs after suffering a broken leg last December.  There are a lot of question marks, not in regards to making the playoffs, but beating the Phoenix Suns, Dallas Mavericks, and San Antonio Spurs and becoming that elite team.

The outlook: 5th in the West, 3rd in the Southwest, and sorry fans, I still can’t see them winning in the first round.  Too bad they’re not in the East.  They could advance there.

New Orleans Hornets

Projected Starting Lineup:

C Tyson Chandler

PF David WestSF Peja StojakovicSG Morris Peterson

PG Chris Paul

Coach: Byron Scott

The good: Chris Paul and Peja Stojakovic are healthy again and Tyson Chandler is ready to take the next step towards being a major star.

This team last season was ravaged by injuries.  Chris Paul missed a month as well as power forward David West.  The biggest blow to the team was Peja Stpjakovic who inked a $60 million contract and then had back surgery, limiting his season to only 13 games.  There is much to be optimistic for in The Big Easy, though.  All are expected to be back and ready to live up to their expectations.  The revelation of last season was center Tyson Chandler.  Chandler finished second in the league in rebounds per game and has become a defensive stalwart.  His mini-career resurrection has sparked a boost to the Hornets who can now develop an inside-out game.

Like many teams ravaged by injury, the Hornets can now show what could have been in years past.    Signing Morris Peterson over the summer to a 4 year deal was huge considering they were losing swingman Desmond Mason to the Milwauke Bucks.  For a team whose city is hosting the 2008 NBA All-Star game, I predict there will be at least 2 representatives (Chandler and Paul).  They will be a sneaky bunch this season.

The Bad:  their bench at the guard spots is very thin.  Also, Stojakovic needs to show he’s fully healed.

The New Orleans Hornets… First round pick Hilton Armstrong must step his game up or else he’ll wind up like his former teammate and first round pick Cedric Simmons: traded.  First round pick Julian Wright out of Kansas slipped to them at #13 in the 2007 NBA Draft, but he could become a sleeper and definitely an impact guy considering Peja’s health.  He has to show that he can be a stat filler and show improvement on his jump shot, something that hampers his game.  The Hornets are relying on players such as Adam Haluska, Rasual Butler, and Jannero Pargo to help out the second unit at the guard spots.  It’s a thin, inexperienced and incomplete bench.  The Hornets are hoping it doesn’t cost them a playoff spot.  Of course, the injury bug needs to buzz off of New Orleans.  In their first full season back to N.O. since Hurricane Katrina, the people deserve to see their best players play.  Also, the fans need to show up and support the way Oklahoma City did when the Hornets were temporarily there.  To gain a huge home court advantage in New Orleans could spur this team onto many home victories.

The outlook: 8th in the West, 4th in the Southwest, they lose in the first round, but they help a recovering city feel better.

Memphis Grizzlies

Projected Starting Lineup:

C Darko Milicic

PF Pau Gasol

SF Rudy Gay

SG Mike Miller

PG Damon Stoudamire

Coach: Marc Iavaroni

The good: A happy Pau Gasol combined with young athletic talent can lead to a resurgence in Memphis.

This team is moving in the right direction not only to win down the line, but to appease their franchise player.  After losing the NBA lottery despite having the biggest odds to win, they managed to walk out of the draft with Ohio State PG Mike Conley, who shined in last year’s NCAA Tournament.  Conley should be a decent guard down the line, but in the meantime the Grizz under new GM Chris Wallace managed to sign Darko Milicic to a 3 year $21 million deal and swing a deal for Gasol’s buddy from Spain Juan Carlos Navarro.  Navarro, although not having played a single NBA minute, adds a veteran presence to a team that will need it if they want to make the playoffs.  The player to look out for is Rudy Gay.  This is a player that made the All-Rookie First Team last season and showed glimpses of being a star, averaging 10.8ppg and 4.5rpg.  A jump in his production can jumpstart this team in need of a score-first player.

The bad:  Darko may or may not be ready to take on finally being the man he was hyped up to be in 2003.

Another player to focus on is Darko Milicic.  This is his third team in 5 years.  The #2 pick in the 2003 has caught tons of criticism for not living up to the talent of the players drafted in the same year him such as LeBron James and Chris Bosh.  He’s now being paid like a superstar.  He will get the starting center job.  Now it’s time for him to play like a superstar.  He is the difference between another trip back to the playoffs or trying their luck at a game they’re not good at: the lottery.  Stalwarts like Mike Miller will keep the team in many games, but ultimately I’m not too fond of Mike Conley and Rudy Gay.  Will they be decent?  I believe so, but Grizzlies fans at times will get frustrated with their play.  It’s called growing pains, but for a team committed to winning now while Gasol is still happy, now is time to show some progress.  It’s a team on the rise, but it only takes one injury to the star to dead their season.

The outlook:  10th in the West, 5th in the Southwest, missing the playoffs, but becoming a team people will want to watch in the next year or two.

EARLIER RUMORSDon’t forget to read the earlier rumor entry. Click here to read it.Thanks and here is the latest on the Jay-Z book stuff.NO BLACK BOOK FOR JAY-ZOK, just so you know, I got a moment of clarity. Just so you know, Jay-Z has NOT reconsidered his autobiography, deemed the Black Book. I had heard he was, but what it actually is its another writer is doing an unauthorized biography of Jigga. So, the other book – the one that was too personal to release – is still sitting on the shelf somewhere collecting stories. Good deal.Even though I’ve been hearing that Jadakiss is totally signed to the Roc, I heard that Jay-Z said that he HOPED to get ‘Kiss on the team. The last I’m hearing is that the people couldn’t come to the terms of the paperwork50 CENT BEEFIN WITH LANCE BASS?If 50 Cent cant beef with a gangster like Lil’ Wayne, he can beef with Lance Bass, the gay ex-member of N’Sync. They both released books last Tuesday and 50 told the NY Daily News that he wouldn’t show mercy on the pop t### boy. 50 said, “He doesn’t stand a chance. With me, everything’s a competition, so I bet you the end of next week, I’ll be moving more copies than him. This is the same competition – this is Kanye West and 50 Cent all over again!”Lance said, “50’s going down, that’s all I have to say. 50, I don’t want to playa-hate, but there’s a lot that my book has. And I’m pretty sure he doesn’t have any space training, either.”With that said, 50 is not going “down.”SAIGON IN A FIGHT?Saigon getting in a massive brawl? No way! Well, here is what I heard happened at the The Hudson House in Nyack, NY. Rumor has it, Saigon was involved in a huge brawl. I heard the rapper was attacked and the fight stormed out of the bar onto the street, where bottles were being broken. It was supposedly a fight between Spring Valley people and Nyack people. I wouldn’t know about all the local hood politics in Upstate New York. I also heard Saigon was choked by the police officers by way of a nightstick. I also heard Sai was cuffed. I don’t know that anybody else in the vicinity was apprehended by the Orange Town Police. I am shocked that this has not gotten out yet. (Shout out to RenniSouf.)SOULJA BOY GETS MAD?I got a lil’ birdie telling me that Soulja Boy got mad while performing at the North Carolina A&T State University homecoming concert.  The show was held this past Saturday night at the Greensboro Coliseum and while Soulja Boy was beginning to perform Soulja Girl someone in the crowd p##### him off. NOW, this is the fuzzy part. Somebody gave somebody the middle finger. I think the person in the crowd gave Soulja the middle and Soulja motioning with his mouth “F**k You!” And then the Boy walked off the stage without finishing his performance. I did hear the show continued with the A&T Mascot doing the Soulja Boy dance and Lil’ Wayne went on to put on a hot performance.ILLSEED’S QUICKIESWell, the fourth quarter got too hectic and Ja Rule has been pushed back to 2008.Kelly Rowland has just been added to the MTV Europe Music Awards.Lil’ Wayne confirmed that Eminem was on his new album too. Video Producer: Steve Raze

Videographer: Antione Charles

When Mood Muzik 2 (Can It Get Any Worse?) dropped last year and the mixtape’s rapture spread through the country, Joe Budden firmly solidified his lyrical ability in the Hip-Hop game. Yes, he had a gold selling album and plenty of mixtapes to his credit, but MM2 elevated Jump Off Joe’s status from the latest punchline wonder to one of the rap game’s prime lyricists. Forced to sit on the Def Jam shelf month after month, The Growth his 2nd LP, has yet to see the light of day. With a tormenting time at Hov’s home and fans screaming for music by the self appointed “King of New Jersey,” Joe Budden’s options became very clear. After over a year in the making, Joe’s position was to give the people what they want, Mood Muzik 3.

AllHipHop.com and Joe Budden spent an afternoon at Fight:Klub studios to get an exclusive listening session with the newly freed from Def Jam artist. Joe gave us a sneek-peek at Mood Muzik 3 along with some of his thoughts on a few of his favorite songs.

Joe Budden: The song that we about to play now, it’s called “Dear Diary,” and there’s no hook on the record. It’s about five, five and half minutes, maybe six minutes, I’m not really sure, of just bars. It’s straight spittin’, there’s no hook, just the way a lot the songs on Mood Musik 2 came out. Actually I feel like this song could have been a lot longer. It’s one of my personal favorites because of that exact reason, because it’s so personal to me. I’m not going to give it away too much. I’d rather play it. I’d rather play it first. Where we at? We are here …

Joe Budden: Chill, we good, we good. You can see where the direction of that was going. I’m actually, in that song I’m talking to maybe three or four different people in particular. The people will know who they are when they hear the record. But uh, in dealing with those people, you learn certain things. Well, I learned certain things and I talked about it and spoke upon it and people can apply those things to other areas of their life. I try to do that a lot in my joints. The song will be personal about something that I personally went through myself but I try to expand it and make it a bit broader so other people can pick up on some of the things that I picked up from a certain situation. It’s crazy, like I said it’s about six minutes long, 5 and half minutes long and it’s one of my favorites. I play it over and over. This was actually one of the last joints that we ended up recording for the tape. I just felt like this was definitely needed. And my man Sultea/TK came through with the beat and we blazed it.

Ya know, the Joe Budden fans enjoy the personal music and enjoy the jewels and the gems that I would drop inside of it even though they may not actually be able to relate to the experience. I’m anxious for people to hear that, definitely. It’s called “Dear Diary”. The title is pretty much self explanatory. It’s a n#### just opening up a book and talking about some things that are heavy on his mind .

Joe Budden: This next song that we about to play is called “Hiatus.” Again, the title is self-explanatory. It’s one of the first joints that we did. I couldn’t even tell you exactly who produced the beat cause that’s how early in the process we recorded the joint. A bunch of producers sent me tracks, this one stood out the most. I was gonna save it. This one I was gonna save for the album but once the situation started looking like an album was not coming, I said okay, I’m not just going to keep holding on to this record. It’s another one I’m excited for people to hear. Let’s get into it. Let’s do it. Let’s play the crack. 6:18

Joe Budden: I got um, I got phone calls playing in the beginning of this record because it just adds to the imagery, adds to the scene, adds to the mood, the feeling that I’m trying to give off to it. When it actually comes out on a CD the phone calls will be a separate track and then the song will be a separate track but as of right now it’s all together. Again, this track is pretty long also. There’s a lot of long joints on the CD. It’s maybe about five plus, or four plus no hook, straight spittin’.

.

Joe Budden: Umph, definitely one of my favorites. That’s crack right there. Again, everything is in the title. The name of the song is “Hiatus.” I think it explains a lot of things. And when it’s not explaining, it’s more so spiritual, to me. It’s basically just talking about some of the reasons why I haven’t been putting music out. Totally aside from my label situation. People have grown accustomed to me releasing music just pretty often and out of the clear blue sky I stopped. Some people around me where actually questioning whether rapping was still something that I wanted to do. Whether he was built for it…ya know, just a lot of questions that were surrounding Joe Budden and his approach to music, and a few perspectives were f##### up.

Some people got the impression that I just didn’t want to do it or people got the impression that I was lazy or my work ethic was f##### up and even when meeting with some these labels, it’s a question that they asked. So obviously it’s not a knock that you could ignore. The beat just took me there. The beat took me there to speak upon it and to talk about it and even deeper than that talk to my higher power about it. And basically what’s the next step. Where do we go from here? That’s the gist at the end of this record.

The state that Hip-Hop is in at right this second, and me being the lyricist that I am, and the type of person that I am, do I even fit in here? Even if I do or if I don’t, what is the next step to take? I think that’s where that song ends at, and it’s crazy. Got some length on it and I like I said it’s amazing I can’t wait…the same way on Part 2 “Dumb Out” was one of the songs that I couldn’t wait to perform and I couldn’t wait for people to hear in its entirety and then when I performed it, just the way I pictured it in my head that’s the way it happened. Everybody went crazy and it was insane. I think this record will have that some effect, but it’s a totally different record. It’s not Dumb out at all.

AllHipHop.com: Why did you go with the approach of no hook, just straight rhyming?

Joe Budden: I’m just…to me right everything is based around a hook. Everything is based around your beat and your hook. So when you on a label you have to kind of conform to that. The song has to be structured a certain type of way. Even in you trying to freak it…like 50 tried…he doesn’t try he freaks it. He stays within the structure but he always does something different. Like “In The Club” that record is probably two minutes and 30 seconds long. “I Get Money”, verse-hook, verse-hook, the bridge is the third verse He always does something different in there. But aside from a n#### like that, everybody pretty much does the exact same thing. So on the mixtapes, and I can’t really continue to call this a mixtape cause everything is original on it, it really is like an album, but on the mixtapes or when I’m in my own zone and I don’t have those restraints on me, I like to do s### a certain way. I know that when I sign my deal I’ll have to do things a different way. So I like to try and take advantage of it.

Most of the times when I’m writing, and you can hear it on this tape, you’ve heard it in the past, I’ll start out with a certain mindset for what the record should be and by the time you get to the 16th bar, the record is talking about something totally different. The topics continue to change depending on the mood. I kind of just let the pen go. So I don’t ever want to stop that to put a hook in there to tell you what the record is about. ‘Cause that’s basically what the hooks is for. The hook is to give people a general idea of what the song is about. And I can’t really do that on Mood Muzik. Not on this one anyway because the topic is going to change every few bars. You lose the momentum when you do that, and I don’t want to do that.

My mixtape n#####, this is for them. I’m catering to them at the same time doing the things that I want to do. I don’t want no hook. I don’t want to do the club, the b######, I don’t want to do anything in the norm. that was the whole idea of Mood Musik in the first place. Cause everybody wanted to think, everybody seemed to think there was no audience for this type of music and I been successful in putting this type of music out. I always try to do something different.

There are a few songs with choruses on here but the ones without choruses tend to be my favorites. And I mean honestly if I started with choruses on some of these records they’re going to come out to be like 8, 9 minutes long cause I’m just spitting bars right now and if you notice as soon as that beat drop, bars came on. It’s not a n#### taking up space on the beat. It’s not me talking. It’s not me bullshitting around, not even on the end. On the end of that record when the bars go off the fade is coming, I’m not talking s###. So that’s about 5 minutes of bars. To the artists out there, the n##### that rap, you can do the math on that. I don’t have one verse on here that’s just 16 bars. Maybe three songs are stuck to that formula, with 16, 16, 16. Everything else, when I start going off, everything is about 60 bars minimum, the minimum. On there that’s probably about 84. I mean I’m not sure, I’m just going off of what I remember writing in the pad cause I always mark it down. It’s a lot of bars. I’m just trying to get some things out, so that’s all. Those tend to be my favorites, and that right there, definitely one of my favorites.

Joe Budden: This next track is called “Send Him Our Love.” I mean it’s really hard when you ask a n#### to pick favorites cause it’s like trying to pick your favorite child or some s### like that. All of the records have a different meaning to me and they all my favorites. But this one again is personal and I’m speaking to somebody directly and it just came out crazy. It’s one of the earlier joints that we did and it’s another beat that I was going to hold on to and I said, Ya know what, f### that. I’m a let it all hang out, like I’m not going to hold on to s###. Even though I ended up holding on to like five or six. But um, yeah, I’ma blast off. Play damn it.

Joe Budden: Yeah, you get the gist of that one. Another one that’s pretty self-explanatory. That’s my $tack Bundles tribute. But, it’s not really a tribute. It’s not one of those records like “We’ll Always Love Big Poppa” or one of those. That’s me just directly — how you gonna come in late and not have the phone on vibrate, n####! — that’s just me directly speaking to him. When I get in the booth I act like it’s just me. Act like I’m not actually releasing the music and people aren’t going to hear what I’m talking about. That’s me just talking to my n####, let him know I miss him. Let him know I love him and that’s pretty much it. That’s one of the songs that are in the format of 16, 16, and 16. N##### will appreciate it because he was loved by many. Loved by many.
