Joe Budden’s Preview of Mood Muzik 3

Video Producer: Steve Raze

Videographer: Antione Charles

When Mood Muzik 2 (Can It Get Any Worse?) dropped last year and the mixtape’s rapture spread through the country, Joe Budden firmly solidified his lyrical ability in the Hip-Hop game. Yes, he had a gold selling album and plenty of mixtapes to his credit, but MM2 elevated Jump Off Joe’s status from the latest punchline wonder to one of the rap game’s prime lyricists. Forced to sit on the Def Jam shelf month after month, The Growth his 2nd LP, has yet to see the light of day. With a tormenting time at Hov’s home and fans screaming for music by the self appointed “King of New Jersey,” Joe Budden’s options became very clear. After over a year in the making, Joe’s position was to give the people what they want, Mood Muzik 3.

AllHipHop.com and Joe Budden spent an afternoon at Fight:Klub studios to get an exclusive listening session with the newly freed from Def Jam artist. Joe gave us a sneek-peek at Mood Muzik 3 along with some of his thoughts on a few of his favorite songs.

Joe Budden: The song that we about to play now, it’s called “Dear Diary,” and there’s no hook on the record. It’s about five, five and half minutes, maybe six minutes, I’m not really sure, of just bars. It’s straight spittin’, there’s no hook, just the way a lot the songs on Mood Musik 2 came out. Actually I feel like this song could have been a lot longer. It’s one of my personal favorites because of that exact reason, because it’s so personal to me. I’m not going to give it away too much. I’d rather play it. I’d rather play it first. Where we at? We are here …

Joe Budden: Chill, we good, we good. You can see where the direction of that was going. I’m actually, in that song I’m talking to maybe three or four different people in particular. The people will know who they are when they hear the record. But uh, in dealing with those people, you learn certain things. Well, I learned certain things and I talked about it and spoke upon it and people can apply those things to other areas of their life. I try to do that a lot in my joints. The song will be personal about something that I personally went through myself but I try to expand it and make it a bit broader so other people can pick up on some of the things that I picked up from a certain situation. It’s crazy, like I said it’s about six minutes long, 5 and half minutes long and it’s one of my favorites. I play it over and over. This was actually one of the last joints that we ended up recording for the tape. I just felt like this was definitely needed. And my man Sultea/TK came through with the beat and we blazed it.

Ya know, the Joe Budden fans enjoy the personal music and enjoy the jewels and the gems that I would drop inside of it even though they may not actually be able to relate to the experience. I’m anxious for people to hear that, definitely. It’s called “Dear Diary”. The title is pretty much self explanatory. It’s a n#### just opening up a book and talking about some things that are heavy on his mind .

Joe Budden: This next song that we about to play is called “Hiatus.” Again, the title is self-explanatory. It’s one of the first joints that we did. I couldn’t even tell you exactly who produced the beat cause that’s how early in the process we recorded the joint. A bunch of producers sent me tracks, this one stood out the most. I was gonna save it. This one I was gonna save for the album but once the situation started looking like an album was not coming, I said okay, I’m not just going to keep holding on to this record. It’s another one I’m excited for people to hear. Let’s get into it. Let’s do it. Let’s play the crack. 6:18

Joe Budden: I got um, I got phone calls playing in the beginning of this record because it just adds to the imagery, adds to the scene, adds to the mood, the feeling that I’m trying to give off to it. When it actually comes out on a CD the phone calls will be a separate track and then the song will be a separate track but as of right now it’s all together. Again, this track is pretty long also. There’s a lot of long joints on the CD. It’s maybe about five plus, or four plus no hook, straight spittin’.

.

Joe Budden: Umph, definitely one of my favorites. That’s crack right there. Again, everything is in the title. The name of the song is “Hiatus.” I think it explains a lot of things. And when it’s not explaining, it’s more so spiritual, to me. It’s basically just talking about some of the reasons why I haven’t been putting music out. Totally aside from my label situation. People have grown accustomed to me releasing music just pretty often and out of the clear blue sky I stopped. Some people around me where actually questioning whether rapping was still something that I wanted to do. Whether he was built for it…ya know, just a lot of questions that were surrounding Joe Budden and his approach to music, and a few perspectives were f##### up.

Some people got the impression that I just didn’t want to do it or people got the impression that I was lazy or my work ethic was f##### up and even when meeting with some these labels, it’s a question that they asked. So obviously it’s not a knock that you could ignore. The beat just took me there. The beat took me there to speak upon it and to talk about it and even deeper than that talk to my higher power about it. And basically what’s the next step. Where do we go from here? That’s the gist at the end of this record.

The state that Hip-Hop is in at right this second, and me being the lyricist that I am, and the type of person that I am, do I even fit in here? Even if I do or if I don’t, what is the next step to take? I think that’s where that song ends at, and it’s crazy. Got some length on it and I like I said it’s amazing I can’t wait…the same way on Part 2 “Dumb Out” was one of the songs that I couldn’t wait to perform and I couldn’t wait for people to hear in its entirety and then when I performed it, just the way I pictured it in my head that’s the way it happened. Everybody went crazy and it was insane. I think this record will have that some effect, but it’s a totally different record. It’s not Dumb out at all.

AllHipHop.com: Why did you go with the approach of no hook, just straight rhyming?

Joe Budden: I’m just…to me right everything is based around a hook. Everything is based around your beat and your hook. So when you on a label you have to kind of conform to that. The song has to be structured a certain type of way. Even in you trying to freak it…like 50 tried…he doesn’t try he freaks it. He stays within the structure but he always does something different. Like “In The Club” that record is probably two minutes and 30 seconds long. “I Get Money”, verse-hook, verse-hook, the bridge is the third verse He always does something different in there. But aside from a n#### like that, everybody pretty much does the exact same thing. So on the mixtapes, and I can’t really continue to call this a mixtape cause everything is original on it, it really is like an album, but on the mixtapes or when I’m in my own zone and I don’t have those restraints on me, I like to do s### a certain way. I know that when I sign my deal I’ll have to do things a different way. So I like to try and take advantage of it.

Most of the times when I’m writing, and you can hear it on this tape, you’ve heard it in the past, I’ll start out with a certain mindset for what the record should be and by the time you get to the 16th bar, the record is talking about something totally different. The topics continue to change depending on the mood. I kind of just let the pen go. So I don’t ever want to stop that to put a hook in there to tell you what the record is about. ‘Cause that’s basically what the hooks is for. The hook is to give people a general idea of what the song is about. And I can’t really do that on Mood Muzik. Not on this one anyway because the topic is going to change every few bars. You lose the momentum when you do that, and I don’t want to do that.

My mixtape n#####, this is for them. I’m catering to them at the same time doing the things that I want to do. I don’t want no hook. I don’t want to do the club, the b######, I don’t want to do anything in the norm. that was the whole idea of Mood Musik in the first place. Cause everybody wanted to think, everybody seemed to think there was no audience for this type of music and I been successful in putting this type of music out. I always try to do something different.

There are a few songs with choruses on here but the ones without choruses tend to be my favorites. And I mean honestly if I started with choruses on some of these records they’re going to come out to be like 8, 9 minutes long cause I’m just spitting bars right now and if you notice as soon as that beat drop, bars came on. It’s not a n#### taking up space on the beat. It’s not me talking. It’s not me bullshitting around, not even on the end. On the end of that record when the bars go off the fade is coming, I’m not talking s###. So that’s about 5 minutes of bars. To the artists out there, the n##### that rap, you can do the math on that. I don’t have one verse on here that’s just 16 bars. Maybe three songs are stuck to that formula, with 16, 16, 16. Everything else, when I start going off, everything is about 60 bars minimum, the minimum. On there that’s probably about 84. I mean I’m not sure, I’m just going off of what I remember writing in the pad cause I always mark it down. It’s a lot of bars. I’m just trying to get some things out, so that’s all. Those tend to be my favorites, and that right there, definitely one of my favorites.

Joe Budden: This next track is called “Send Him Our Love.” I mean it’s really hard when you ask a n#### to pick favorites cause it’s like trying to pick your favorite child or some s### like that. All of the records have a different meaning to me and they all my favorites. But this one again is personal and I’m speaking to somebody directly and it just came out crazy. It’s one of the earlier joints that we did and it’s another beat that I was going to hold on to and I said, Ya know what, f### that. I’m a let it all hang out, like I’m not going to hold on to s###. Even though I ended up holding on to like five or six. But um, yeah, I’ma blast off. Play damn it.

Joe Budden: Yeah, you get the gist of that one. Another one that’s pretty self-explanatory. That’s my $tack Bundles tribute. But, it’s not really a tribute. It’s not one of those records like “We’ll Always Love Big Poppa” or one of those. That’s me just directly — how you gonna come in late and not have the phone on vibrate, n####! — that’s just me directly speaking to him. When I get in the booth I act like it’s just me. Act like I’m not actually releasing the music and people aren’t going to hear what I’m talking about. That’s me just talking to my n####, let him know I miss him. Let him know I love him and that’s pretty much it. That’s one of the songs that are in the format of 16, 16, and 16. N##### will appreciate it because he was loved by many. Loved by many.

Pac’s Life, Part 1: Kevin Hackie

Ever since the death of Tupac Shakur there have been various stories, rumors, and mistruths floating throughout the streets. Even after eleven years of questions amongst the masses, no arrest has yet been made surrounding his murder. With the release of Tupac Assassination, filmmakers R.J. Bond and “Big Frank” Alexander attempt to put the pieces together on what really went down leading up to that tragic evening in Vegas.  In a Q&A session that followed a recent private screening of the documentary, former Tupac bodyguard Kevin Hackie stated that he was working for the FBI during his tenure at Deathrow Records and dispelled the reports of him being a government witness.  With this startling piece of information now into play all eyes are on him.  In an explosive interview he dwarfs his previous shocking allegations that police corruption has always been the major hurdle in closing this case by actually naming the shooter.  AllHipHop.com gets a true inside look of what really happened to one of the greatest rappers of all time, from Hackie’s perpective.  AllHipHop.com: Give us a little introduction to yourself for all the readers who may not be all the way familiar with your story?

Kevin Hackie: I was a police officer for about seventeen years and I’m currently the CEO of a security company.  I worked undercover for about three and a half years for the government. Reggie Wright [General Manager of Death Row Records] I’ve known for about twenty years now.  AllHipHop.com: You and Reggie Wright both were officers in the Compton police department together correct?Kevin Hackie: Right, well I worked the school district gang unit and Reggie worked city.  But my primary focus was the schools but obviously we handled the overflow and everything.AllHipHop.com: As the story has been told to me Reggie Wright left the police department and went on to work at Death Row Records.  He simultaneously would also head up a company called Wright Way Security which primarily handled the security for Suge Knight and all the Death Row artists.  When did you start moonlighting as a security officer for Deathrow Records?Kevin Hackie: In 1992, but late 92’.AllHipHop.com: At that time were you still a Compton police officer or were you working with the FBI?Kevin Hackie: Police officer, I worked double.  I was still a police officer and I was paid by the government for three years and I was still paid by the police department too.  AllHipHop.com: I’ve heard that you were a Compton police officer and then got arrested for unregistered firearm charges.  Is that true or was it fabricated to conceal your link to the FBI?Kevin Hackie: Right, my case ended up being overturned on appeal it was about seven months total [jail time].  AllHipHop.com: When did you get promoted to the FBI?  Kevin Hackie: It wasn’t really a promotion.  I’ll tell you how it all happened.  I had applied to be a DEA agent, a drug enforcement agent.  Then one thing led to the next and it was announced to me that they were watching Reggie [Wright] and Suge [Knight].  Basically I got called into the chief’s office and I was introduced to a couple of FBI agents and that’s how everything got started.  Basically there was a promise [made] that they were going to do this and that for me.  You know forward my application for me and one thing led to the next.  I went through the next three years.  At the end of the day once he [Tupac] was shot I had a falling out with the lead agent in charge over the case and that’s how the story ended.AllHipHop.com: Was the decision to moonlight as security for Deathrow Records a decision of yours or a mandate from the FBI?Kevin Hackie: No, I was already in place.  I was already working [there].  I was the closest one to Reggie Wright at the time.  I was the closest one on the inside.  AllHipHop.com: Did the FBI divulge their reasons for keeping their eyes and ears on Deathrow Records?Kevin Hackie: They had suspected Reggie of carrying out..um how can I say this, criminal activities for Suge Knight.  AllHipHop.com:  I need you to elaborate on that.Kevin Hackie: I can’t but you can also note that there was a Long Beach police officer who worked undercover with me also.AllHipHop.com: Who is the police officer in question?Kevin Hackie: I can’t give you his name because he is still an active police officer.AllHipHop.com: Okay.  So what you are saying is that this police officer in question was working security for Deathrow Records?Kevin Hackie: Yes.AllHipHop.com: Where did the misconception that you were a government witness start to come up versus you just working alongside the FBI?Kevin Hackie: That all came about with the [Christopher] Wallace case; I ended up having a lawsuit against the city of Los Angeles.  The city of Los Angeles, well a particular detective sold my files to my understanding for a half of million dollars.  That’s where the Rolling Stone article came about. It was about five or six years ago?AllHipHop.com: Yes the article was called “The Murder Of The Notorious B.I.G.” It came out in 2001.  The article broke the story about the alleged cover ups in the LAPD in regards to closing the B.I.G. homicide case.Kevin Hackie: LAPD of course had a file on me but all of the documents which were ten to twelve different tapes, all the wire taps, a particular individual sold all that.  AllHipHop.com: Really?Kevin Hackie: Yeah that’s all that stuff went into that [article] and of course the Wallace family, you know about the lawsuit a couple of years ago?  And you know quite frankly I didn’t want to be involved in that situation any more.  That’s where it came about with the informant [accusations], because they had all the documentation of course from the LAPD and privy of course to the tapes…because the tapes they finally had to handover the tapes to me obviously from a federal lawsuit in 2001.  I don’t know if you are familiar with the Wallace case and my case; Judge Florence Cooper is the same judge in both cases.  She was the judge in my city case which settled out and settled the Wallace case.AllHipHop.com: How did those tapes and documents get taken from you by that particular individual?Kevin Hackie: They weren’t stolen from me, someone in the LAPD sold them; internal affairs.  AllHipHop.com: The Tupac Assassination documentary that comes out shortly basically points the finger at two individuals that were behind Pac’s murder.  Clearly with your past you are very familiar with these two individuals in question.  Do you agree with the film’s conclusion?Kevin Hackie: I agree 110%.AllHipHop.com: Help me out here.   Since I am not able to divulge the names of those two individuals that the documentary points the finger to at this time can you give me further insight on what went down the night of Pac’s murder?Kevin Hackie: Well the bottom line is Orlando Anderson and you can quote this did shoot Tupac.  There’s no doubt about that.  There is an arrest warrant…there is a paper trail in 1998 [that] he was going to be arrested for this crime actually about twenty four hours before he was shot.  Of course obviously [there were] individuals still working within the Compton police department as you know Reggie’s [Wright] dad [Reggie Wright Sr.] was still a lieutenant or a LA county sheriff at the time.  But of course he [Orlando Anderson] mysteriously ends up dead the next day.  There’s a paper trail to that.  AllHipHop.com: What’s your take on Orlando Anderson?  It was revealed to me he never even had tickets to that Mike Tyson / Bruce Seldon fight that went down in Las Vegas the night Pac got hit.  Do you believe that scuffle between Orlando and Deathrow was staged to differ attention on the murder away from the actual two individuals in question?Kevin Hackie: By all means.  I’ll put it to you this way, I’d put up my money ten million double my money or nothing.  I’ll leave it at that.AllHipHop.com: That’s a bold statement.  Is it true there were FBI agents in cars tailing Tupac the night that he got shot?Kevin Hackie: Yup.AllHipHop.com: Were they tailing him because…Kevin Hackie: Draw your own conclusions, let’s leave it at that.AllHipHop.com: Any reason why the FBI would keep real a close eye on Pac but when he gets killed the homicide case is not handled properly at all?Kevin Hackie: First of all I can tell you right now it was no secret that the government had no love for Tupac Shakur.  Excuse my French, it was a case of another n***a that had money and then the Hip-Hop game was dirty anyway and throughout my affidavit which these answers will be brought out.  By no means whatsoever this kid wasn’t a gang member; it was just hype to sell records.  But I know first hand that they [the government] didn’t care for him and the new district attorney in Clark County David Roger; that’s somebody you may want to give a call to.  David Roger, he is actually the new district attorney.  You may want to call him or either email him.  I’ve had some back and forth communications with him last week email wise.  AllHipHop.com: He’s located in Las Vegas correct?Kevin Hackie: He’s the head district attorney.  It’s up to him to go ahead to convene a grand jury.  Contrary to popular belief most of the strip that people think of as a strip is not in Las Vegas it’s in Clark County.  The county’s district attorney office really and truly needs to push forward but obviously the Las Vegas police never presented a case and of course you have basically the Las Vegas Metro Police saying that Compton PD f***ed it up.  And of course you have Compton police officers saying well Las Vegas police f***ed it up. And with Compton police in their eyes, they solved the case.  AllHipHop.com: Do you agree that Compton police solved the case?Kevin Hackie: Well yes and no they did solve the case.  But at the end of the day you’re not going to want to crucify one of your own because what’s going to happen?  You are going to have another Rampart scandal even though Compton police department is no longer in existence you are still going to have a big scandal.  AllHipHop.com: It’s a political hot potato that nobody wants to hold.Kevin Hackie: Exactly, no one wants responsibility for it.  AllHipHop.com: In your opinion will this case ever be solved?Kevin Hackie: I think at this point in time after eleven years I think at this point in time I think there should be some closure to the case hopefully.  There are new people in place management wise as far as enforcement and I think at this point in time the case can be solved.  I’m multiracial.  My mother is Puerto Rican and my father is white; Jewish.  Bottom line if Tupac Shakur was white, you know and I know this case would have been solved.  We have a prime example with this OJ [Simpson] situation right now.  AllHipHop.com: Yeah it mirrors that infamous Dave Chappelle Show sketch about racial injustice where he said Nicole Simpson can’t rap.Kevin Hackie: Exactly. He didn’t warrant anything to lock him up there with no bail on a bottom line bullsh*t case.  I mean here we are in 2007 there’s still unfair treatment.  If Tupac had of been white, no problem.  You got to remember at that time, let’s face it Deathrow Records was controlling everything.  AllHipHop.com: Be a little more clear for me, not just the record industry correct?Kevin Hackie: Okay, not just the record industry.  There were a lot of people on the payroll, a lot of people.  AllHipHop.com: I’m assuming that’s the same assumption that could be applied to the Christopher Wallace homicide case as well?Kevin Hackie: Exactly.  What you might want to note is that LAPD detective Greg Kading concurred with me that there will be an arrest in the Wallace case shortly.  Greg Kading who’s status with the LAPD and you can quote this, is confidential said there will be an arrest made shortly.  AllHipHop.com: With all the information you just divulged to me do you ever fear for your life with the people you believe to be involved in both murders?Kevin Hackie: I’m in fear for my life everyday, always have been.  But I think at this point in time if I come up and something happens to me I think there would be a public outcry in a sense.  We know who pulled the trigger, there’s no doubt about it.AllHipHop.com: In closing what’s next for you?Kevin Hackie: What’s next for me?AllHipHop.com: Yes.Kevin Hackie: Make another ten million next year.  That’s it (laughs).  And for the record this isn’t informant money, I have my own successful security company.  Stay tuned for AllHipHop.com’s exclusive interview with Reggie Wright.

Shape Up: Three Keys To Success – Nutrition

Hey what’s good everybody, once again it’s Darrell Butler, your AllHipHop.com fitness specialist. Before we can cook up your sleek new physique, we first need to go over the primary ingredients involved. Those key ingredients are a combination of cardio, strength training and the subject of today’s column:  nutrition. You may have noticed that I chose the word “nutrition” over the word “diet.” This is due to the fact that I’m promoting healthy changes to the way that you already eat over crazy fad diets and quick fixes.  There’s a reason why the first part of the word diet is die – many of these plans are extremely dangerous and sacrifice your internal health for the sake of your outward appearance.

Many of these plans are also just too unrealistic to continue for the rest of your life. Sure, you may shed a few pounds by only eating grapefruit or by guzzling some nasty liquid concoction for 10 straight days, but once you go back to eating normally, you’ll most likely gain it all back…and more!  For an example, look no further than Oprah’s struggles with her weight over the years due to her initial reliance on fad diets.

This isn’t to say that there isn’t a solid theory behind many of today’s most popular diets; some just need a few minor tweaks here and there to make them more practical. For example, the Atkins plan requires dieters to eliminate virtually all carbohydrates from their menu and exist almost entirely on meat and proteins. Why does this work? The primary “fuels” for your body are sugars, carbohydrates and stored fats – in that exact order. Once your body has burned through all of the sugars and carbohydrates in your system, it will be forced to burn off stored fat already on your body. So by eliminating the amount of sugars and carbs that you eat, your body will be forced to burn fat.

It’s a sound theory, but like I said, there needs to be a few minor changes to this plan to make it more practical and realistic. For example, carbohydrates are also your prime energy source, so without them you’re going to feel sluggish and unable to focus throughout the day. While protein is great for helping to build muscle, it still has to be prepared in a healthy manner. You can’t expect to eat Slim Jims and bacon every meal and not end up with high cholesterol and blood pressure issues.

Another popular diet that’s been around for decades is the Slim Fast plan, where participants drink a shake for breakfast, a shake for lunch and have a full sized dinner. Once again, this is a sound theory based on portion control, but the plan is backwards. How so? Because most of us are more active during the day so that’s when we’d need more fuel for our bodies. In this plan, the smallest meals are breakfast and lunch, then you load up on calories for dinner only to park your body on the couch to watch tv and fall asleep. What kind of sense does that make?  Besides, who wants to drink two shakes per day as a meal for the rest of their lives?

The most successful long-term weight loss programs such as Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig are based on real foods. It’s much easier to stick to a routine when you have more options and actually enjoy what you’re eating.  Don’t worry, I’m not suggesting that you run out and join these programs – the theory behind them is actually quite simple and can be replicated at home.  Here’s how:

Step 1 – It’s time to bust out your calculator so your first step is to grab that.  Choose a realistic weight that you’d like to be and multiply that number by 11.  For example, if your goal is to weigh 150 pounds, you’ll multiply 150 by 11 for a total of 1650. That is approximately how many calories you would need to consume each day in order to reach or maintain that weight. I said approximately because there is always a human element to this formula, so that number may need to be adjusted slightly for your particular needs. This figure also doesn’t factor in calories that you may burn off during the day due to cardiovascular activity (walking, working, etc.) so if you’re an active person, you can raise that number.

Step 2 – Your next step should be to spread these calories out over five or six meals/snacks each day.  The American tradition is the eat three meals per day, so if this is what you’re used to, try cutting those meal portions in half and turning them into six. Your goal should be to eat every few hours before you get hungry. I know that may have thrown a few of you off, so let me repeat that – you should be eating before you are hungry. Hunger is actually a sign from your body that it’s requiring more fuel, and you should have eaten already.

Your metabolism increases every time that you eat, so by doing so every few hours, you’ll force it to speed up. Many dieters are under the impression that they’ll speed their metabolism by not eating at all, but that is actually wrong on multiple levels. Yes, it is true that you will lose weight by starving yourself, but you’ll also lose muscle and possibly damage internal organs.

It’s also just not a good look since you’ll look worn down and unhealthy (anyone see those shots of Nicole Richie on the beach a few months ago?  My point exactly…).  Last but not least, not eating causes your metabolism to slow down, because your body realizes that it’s not getting enough food so it begins to burn through calories slower. That’s not something that you want to happen, because once you do go back to eating normally, you’ll end up gaining a ton of weight since your metabolism has decreased.

Spreading your daily caloric intake over five to six servings will also reduce the portions of each meal.  Smaller portions are easier to break down, so your body won’t have to store as many digestive fluids and enzymes. That alone will begin to slim your midsection – portion control is the same theory behind gastric bypass surgery. This is how Star Jones and Al Roker slimmed down – it’s a risky procedure though and not for everyone.

Your largest meals should be in the morning, so big shout outs to all of you breakfast lovers. I also tend to throw in elements from the Atkins diet by eliminating carbohydrates throughout the day, resulting in my final two meals consisting primarily of protein and veggies.

Of course, we can’t be good all of the time, so I’d like for you to allow yourself at least one day that literally anything goes.  My current day is what I refer to as “Fat Fridays” but feel free to pick your own – Sloppy Sunday perhaps? Bottom line is that you can’t eat perfectly all year. Trying to do so may result in binge eating or throwing in the towel completely, so please give yourself at least one meal or an entire day per week to reward yourself for being so disciplined the rest of the time. You may be so used to your routine by that point that you don’t’ want to take advantage of the full day, which is even better, but just knowing that you have that option will give you something to look forward to.

I know I’ve thrown a lot at you with this column – it’s a lot to digest, no pun intended. Before I let you go though, here are a few general tips to help you along your path to healthy eating.

1.      If you know that a holiday or social event is planned, make that day your “cheat day” for the week.

2.      If it’s not an “anything goes” day and you can’t fight the urge to cheat, try to have your slip-up occur as early in the day as possible so that you can burn it back off through cardiovascular activity before the day is over.

3.      Never eat a large meal right before bed – try to remain active for at least an hour or so after your last meal.

4.      Drinking water throughout the day helps boost your metabolism and can allow you to feel less hungry. This is especially true when combined with fiber since water causes it to expand in your stomach to make you feel more full.

5.      In general, hot foods are easier for your body to digest than cold foods. Natural foods are also easier for your body to break down than processed man-made foods. By natural, I mean anything that is organically found on the Earth. That does not include Twinkies…

6.      Always read the labels on your food carefully, many times the information provided is for a serving less than the portion actually provided in the package so you may have to break out that calculator again.

7.      Try to substitute many wasted calories with something more nutritious. For example, instead of a doughnut, try a bagel. Instead of soda, try juice or water. Making subtle changes to what you’re currently doing may make this new lifestyle easier to pull off than you think.

8.      Alcohol is fun, I know, but there are more side effects than drunk dialing your ex. It’s going to be hard to build a six pack if you’re also drinking one every other day so try to limit that as much as possible, especially beer. Don’t’ believe the hype, “light” doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s good for you.

9.      To really get an idea of how well you’re doing, try keeping a diary of literally everything that you eat and drink each day. Seeing it written out will help you stay on point more than you possibly realize.

10.  Just because the restaurant serves you a giant portion, nobody is forcing you to eat it all.  Feel free to take home what you can’t finish instead of forcing it down. Many restaurants are beginning to offer the number of calories on their menus as well. Check out your local bookstore for guides to how many calories are in many of your favorite restaurant’s popular dishes.

That’s a lot of info for one sitting so I’ll cut this here. Feel free to hit me up with any questions that you might have though. Bear in mind, this is not the only solution so you can also consult a dietician or your local physician to help customize a plan that will work for you. In Part 2 of this series, we’ll discuss the second key element for building your new body: cardiovascular activity.

Until Next time be good…or be good at it.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Was Tip Set Up? Pac’s Noose False? Jay-Z’s New Video!

WAS T.I. SET UP?That’s the latest rumor going around. I mean, we all felt that something was awry with that whole situation, but is that possible? The Ill Community is weighing in on the topic. Here are some of the unedited comments.I for one dont put anything past the pigs. Its no coinscidence these people keep getting in trouble. they cant ALL be idiots. This is some b#######……for real. T.I. set himself up since he dont know about personal responsibilityIm still waiting on the day when our so called “black leaders” actually hold ourselves accountable for our stupid actions rathering than always passing the blame on someone elseHere is my comment:You know, if you look at the history of America and you do a lil’ reading…you will see that nothing is above this government. Its very simple. In the 60s, they had Cointelpro, which was by design to create dissention, mistrust and infighting btw Black progressive and nationalist groups. They also killed at will. Look at what happened with the Black Panthers. Skipping a lot of history, but look at what happened with Pac and Biggie. If you think that was an East / West feud that killed them, i have some land in Antartica to sell you. We know have Police Units to follow and profile rappers. You think all of these busts are clean? Nah, B. YOU are the naive fool if you think that rappers are THAT dumb. I’m speaking in general terms with regard to TI. I think and know rappers have to be smarter, but I wouldnt put anything above US law officials. I trust Farrakhan more than Fox, CNN and the LAW. PeriodKELIS GOT DROPPEDKelis has been dropped by Jive Records, according to EW. That’s right, the girl that made all the boys come to the yard by being bossy is now a free agent. I think it’s a good  deal. I think Kelis did some hot joints and never quite got the recognition she deserved. I supposed we’ll see, right? Teddy Riley once said, “It ain’t over…the party’s not over!” And right after he said that, he continued to “jam.” I predict the same for Kelis. If worse comes to worse, he husband is Nas. This is what her manager had to say:“It was a case of being in the ever-shrinking world of the record industry and finding herself on a label she wasn’t signed to and without a champion,” says Kelis’ manager, Jeff Rabhan. “She’s a different kind of artist — very image and style-driven. It’s either something you get or you don’t.”JAY-Z SHOOTS ROC BOY VID!So, Jigga Man has officially pushed “Blue Magic” into BonusCut Land and made “Roc Boys” the second single with the video that he just shot. According to Syn City, the vid features Diddy, Cassie, Nas, Mariah, Memph Bleek, Uncle Murda, Freeway, Beanie, Just and a bunch of other people like Joe Budden. Just kidding on the Joe Budden part. The video was shot in the 40/40 Club and that’s all folks. Also, I rumor has it, Jay-Z has reconsidered the autobiography. I heard that he’s going to do it, but has commissioned a new, well-known writer to pen it. 😉KANYE TO DO A BOOK!Kanye is writing a book! Here is what he said on his blogster. …I teamed up with co-author J. Sakiya Sandifer to make my literary debut with Thank You And You’re Welcome!, an entertaining volume of “Kanye-isms “– the creative, humorous and insightful philosophies and anecdotes used in creating my path to success. It captures the same wit, playful irony, and piercing insight found abundant in my lyrics. In Thank You And You’re Welcome! I deliver my personal message uncensored, without any five-second delay or media distortion…This looks to me like an interesting book.ILLSEED QUICKIES!My friend (in my mind) Kelly Rowland was spotted in London checking out Estelle, a new UK chick signed to John Legend’s label.  I heard Kelly was just-a-dancing the night away.I heard Kelly also popped up at Live X Factory, the UK version of “American Idol.”Speaking of London (again), my boy D-Black tells me that they have uncovered more fake condoms in the UK, as we have seen in various other places. These suckers don’t even protect in pregnancies, much less sexually transmitted diseases. I heard that the whole Tupac statue with the noose news report might have been a hoax. The other 899 cases are still true (IF this one isn’t.)There is a positive rumor that The Game and Big Fase 100 have ended their feud. Hope so. Shout out to Genarlow Wilson! I’m glad to see that he’s finally out. He was 17 and had sex with a consenting 15 year old. It took them two years in jail for them to decide he should be freed. Check out this interview with Jim Jones on his clothing line, Nostic. Oh yeah, the AHH Staff did their weekly music picks again…they dissed  me (again) and left me out. My song is coming up later today.NEVER FEAR – MORE RUMORS LATER!Don’t sleep! I shall return with more mindless drivel for you later in the day. Nostic Apparel: All In The Family

The Nostic Apparel offices in midtown Manhattan are a hectic place, but all is in order.  Prospective buyers come in for meetings and designer Nancy Jones discusses Nostic while taking care of family business on the phone with her son Jim. In the background are racks full of T-shirts, jeans, and hoodies elaborately covered in gothic imagery and a flashy, dagger-emblazoned logo. The Nostic brand is derived from the religious movement of Gnosticism, which teaches that humans need spiritual knowledge in order to navigate between good and evil.

As Mrs. Jones describes, there is a story behind every skull, dove, grim reaper, angel, and scripture. Taking fashion cues from her famous son, the lady best known as Momma Jones developed a unique design that the Diplomats Capo began to rep proudly.  With high profile industry cosigns and distributors from as far as Canada and Japan clamoring for the clothes, Nostic appears to be on the rise.

AllHipHop.com: When did you get your start in fashion?

Nancy Jones: I’ve been doing fashion since I was little.  My son gave me this big break to actually explore more of what I love to do most, and God is good – He gave Jim the opportunity to get out there. God gave me for me to do what I do best. I love kids, and I love to create and design.

AllHipHop.com: How did the idea to start the Nostic line form?

Nancy Jones: I was into the women’s [clothing at first], and I had to do some of the men’s stuff due to my son. So I was doing t-shirts at every fashion show. At one time they would call me Ghetto Mom, then it was called Echelon, then it was called Jonez, so now we’re down to Nostic. When [Jim and I] sat down to talk and he said, “Mom, since you like doing the t-shirts, that’s what you should start out with and we can probably get the line out like that.”

I started doing t-shirts that were not to [his] liking [at the time], and we got into this big, huge, nice, lovely, juicy mother and son argument.  That’s when Chrissy [Jim Jones’ stylist and significant other] gave me the insight on how and what he likes to wear. We were coming up with all sorts of names, and she came up to me and said, “What about Gnostic?” and I said, “I love it, but I don’t like the ‘G’,” so we made it Nostic.

AllHipHop.com: What were the style pointers you took from your son?

Nancy Jones:  Studying my son’s whole dress thing, [I saw that] sometimes he put the shirt on with the cross, next time he might have the shirt looking all vintage and torn up, then he looks like he’s in a gothic kind of world, and then he has a Jesus Christ on his shirt. Nostic fit so perfect, so I just took everything that he likes and how he likes to wear and it and combined it into one.  So that’s how we came up with the skulls, the fallen angel, the angel with the reaper – the vintage looking stuff.  He likes his stuff fitting him nice. And I love it because Jim likes a lot of the back in the day stuff, and that’s my type too. I was very flashy and I still keep my little flashiness. He honestly got that standing out in his dressing. I’m glad that he loved it because the first shirt that I made, he flipped out.

AllHipHop.com: How exactly did he flip out?

Nancy Jones: Well all this time, he didn’t know that I had started making shirts. I told his [assistant] Chris Lecky, “If something exciting come on, the only time you give him this shirt is in the middle of whatever that is.” So Jim was in the middle of an interview and Chris gave him the shirt, and he said “Where did this come from?!,” and Chris said “From your mother, that’s your line.” He said, “Get out!” Then the interviewer said, “Can I have it?” and Jim said “Hell no! You can’t afford it!” Jim took his shirt off and [put on the Nostic shirt].  So from then it was on and popping.

AllHipHop.com: I’ve seen different people from the Diplomats, such as Juelz and Freekey Zekey wearing Nostic.  Who else do you have in line to be spokespersons?

Nancy Jones: They think I’m crazy, I just target anybody.  Even when we went to MAGIC [fashion convention in Las Vegas]…  I know LL Cool J has his own line and the whole nine yards [and I told him] “I can’t give you the clothes if you don’t wear my s**t.” I told 50 Cent, “I can’t give it to you, I need to see you put it on.”  Nick Cannon, Young Jeezy – I don’t play.  Boy, I told Scrappy, “If you don’t wear it, you gonna be picking up scraps for real!” I told Rich Boy, “If you don’t wear it, you gonna be Poor Boy!” I’m not gonna give you any of my stuff if you’re not going to wear it, because anything that you make that is your line and you give to me, I’m gonna wear it.  The people I love the most in the industry are Gino Green, we support each other back and forth.

AllHipHop.com: Jim, along with Juelz and Lil’ Wayne, has been going hard with the rock star look lately. Where do you think the appeal of that comes from?

Nancy Jones: He’s crazy like his momma. I ain’t gonna lie about it, I go into that mood swing type of thing- one time you might see me dressed like the sexy church lady, another time I might be dressed like the secret squirrel lady, another time I might go into that rock and roll. I know if I want to make a difference, that means I have to dress completely different in order for someone to say, “Wow, who is that person, what’s going on?”  I tell my daughters: the way you appear makes the whole difference to anybody.

AllHipHop.com: Do you think the spiritual symbolism of the line will resonate with people?

Nancy Jones: It’s who wants to take it how they want to take it. Nobody said this is just spiritual. If this is on you [points to a Nostic shirt with biblical writings on it] and I read the words and I want to get into that, then fine. If not, if I like the style it just looks hot. But at least I know you got a piece of the bible on you [laughs], so one day it will touch your soul. [With] some of the [Nostic clothes], it won’t be all the way bible stuff, because Gnostic is actually a balance: day and night, good and evil, so it’s all about good balance in life. This [points to another shirt] is the grim reaper and a lady gambling for her life with the dice, and my son plays cee-lo, so that’s the way he saw this.  Everybody takes it however they want to take it, but they know there’s a story behind it.

AllHipHop.com: How did Joe Levin get involved as the President of Nostic?

Nancy Jones: [In the beginning] I was doing it all by myself and it started getting overwhelming, because now they wanted more and more and more. And that’s where Joey came in. I came with stuff already built, but he turned and built the sh*t out of it. He’s the greatest. I still have a lot more to learn, but he has shown me things and taught me more things than anybody in this apparel industry would even try to teach me. Because I’ve been through the line of different people and it’s not no honesty thing out there – it’s a dog eat dog world.  Thank God, He built me as a nice lady but a tough lady, so I’m not going to back down. That’s my partner for real, my whole family is my partner because they’ve been my inspiration.  My daughters Keisha, Precious and Jamillah believed in me real hard. I was determined to get this out one way or another.

AllHipHop.com: In terms of self-expression, what kind of message does someone wearing Nostic send out?

Nancy Jones: They are sending out a good, positive message.  It’s spiritual [depending on] how you feel about it.  I know when you wear it, you feel good. We have our own Nostic women wear that we just getting ready to start out, and I know I feel good when I wear it. I know for a fact when my son wears it, when the whole Dipset wears it, when his compadres wear it, when the people that call me up at MTV and BET wear it, it gives people a positive feeling. It makes you feel good, like this is what it’s about. I want it to continue ‘cause God is good and he’s going to make sure it gets bigger and bigger.  It’s already there, I’m just waiting for it to all start revealing and shining harder.

Jonathan Davis of Korn is Hip-Hop

Rock stars are known to have a reputation for not having the best hygiene, but that doesn’t apply to Jonathan Davis, the vocalist of Korn. It’s midnight and the long-haired singer just finished putting on a vigorous performance with his metal outfit in Portland, Maine. Once the sweaty dynamo leaves the stage, he heads backstage to take a shower. While he gets fresh, it’s worth noting that the eccentric front man helped re-mold the commercial market in the late ‘90s with a brand of counter-culture music that urged teenage rockers and suburban misfits to tune into the Hip-Hop culture. As the mouthpiece of Korn, Davis became the figurehead of the rap-metal movement once their third studio album, Follow The Leader, dropped in 1998. Though the multi-platinum selling collection featured edgy singles like “Got The Life” and “Freak On A Leash,” it also featured several collaborations with respected MCs like Ice Cube and Tre Hardson from The Pharcyde. The Bakersfield-bred quintet (then comprised of Davis, bassist Reginald “Fieldy” Arvizu, drummer David Silveria, and guitarists Brian “Head” Welch and James “Munky” Shaffer) wasn’t done yet. The metal juggernauts strengthened their musical prowess by launching The Family Values Tour, which showcased promising rock acts like Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park, as well as MCs like Method Man, Redman and Xzibit. While that was happening, the California revolutionaries were also running a successful imprint, Elementree Records, which produced acts like the platinum-selling goth-rockers, Orgy.Although the Hip-Hop vibe may have waned from their signature style, Korn’s roots resurfaced in 2005 when they recruited David Banner, Lil’ Jon, Snoop Dogg and Xzibit to portray the band in heir video, “Twisted Transistor.” Months later, they did a mash-up with Virgin label mates, Dem Franchize Boyz, entitled “Coming Undone Wit It.”     Korn is down to a trio right now (Head left the band to further pursue his Christian beliefs and Silveria is on an indefinite hiatus), but the rock stars continue pushing forward with their eighth studio release, Untitled.Back in Portland fifteen minutes later, Davis is out of the shower (and dressed), and ready to engage in a full-fledged Hip-Hop conversation.AllHipHop.com Alternatives: Over the years, it has been well documented that you are a huge Hip-Hop head. When were you first influenced by the culture?Jonathan Davis: I’d say with Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. To me, when those cats came up, they were dressed like rock dudes. They had the leather jackets, spiked bracelets and sh*t. It was crazy at that time, because I used to DJ right when Hip-Hop started. I was moved by it.AHHA: Back in the late ‘90s, Korn was tagged as rap-metal. But honestly, it didn’t seem like you rapped too often. So how do you actually feel about the rap-metal tag?Jonathan Davis: I hated it, honestly. I never f**king rapped. [laughs] I’m not a rapper, but I think they laid that because there were some definite Hip-Hop influences [in our music] like Hip-Hop style bass lines and sh*t like that. We took subtle influences from Hip-Hop. We didn’t take a turntable all the way over the top like Limp Bizkit or that type of sh*t. It was more of a tasty flavor. Because so many bands came out after this and were like what we did, [critics] kinda created a name for the genre. But I think we’re more than that. It’s something that’s always going to follow us, but I always thought it was corny.AHHA: Well, you rhymed on a few songs, but you seemed more like a vocalist than a rapper.Jonathan Davis: Yeah, I was always labeled that and was I was like, “I don’t get it. When the f### did I become a rapper?” [laughs] Ya know? I can rap if I wanted to, but it’s not my thing.AHHA: On Korn’s third studio album, 1997’s Follow The Leader, there were some stellar crossover collaborations like with Ice Cube for “Children of the Korn” and Tre Hardson from the Pharcyde for “Cameltosis.” What inspired that?Jonathan Davis: We were always fans of Ice Cube, and we were flabbergasted when he came to the studio. I remember when NWA first came out and when I started spinning that. I remember when all that sh*t started and that was the hardest sh*t. Just to be able to do something with him was amazing. And the Pharcyde is one of my favorite bands. We brought them out on tours with us. They were a blast, so there are lots of things. We were in that state of mind.AHHA: Were you guys trying to bridge the gap between rap and rock, or were you more concerned about making good, creative music?Jonathan Davis: I think we were worried about making good, creative music and there are so many influences in our band. At the time, Fieldy was really into Hip-Hop. Head and Munky listened to different sh*t, and it was something that naturally came out. We never really discussed it like, “We’re going to go in this direction.” It’s just something that comes out naturally with what we were influenced by.AHHA: Still, rap-metal was huge in the mainstream towards the late ‘90s. Bands like Limp Bizkit, Papa Roach and Adema blew up, but lately, that whole rap-metal presence faded away. Jonathan Davis: So many people started doing it and it just got old. It wasn’t done right. When the first collaborations happened when Anthrax and Public Enemy did “Bring The Noise,” the sh*t they were doing back then was so innovative. Now, it’s just kinda hokey. It’s kinda cheesy. I thought white boys rapping behind guitars didn’t work.AHHA: Despite having that lyrical element and innovative bass notes, the Hip-Hop media never truly embraced these bands. Why don’t you think these groups were embraced?Jonathan Davis: ‘Cause we weren’t Hip-Hop. It was more about subtle influences. We weren’t trying to be Hip-Hop. For a while, people were saying that’s what we’re trying to be. It just had those influences like the jumpsuits, like Run-DMC. I loved those jumpsuits! Just the way we dress and the style of music we do, I think people grabbed a hold of it and it’s like, “These guys are cool.” It was more about life and culture-type of thing. The other bands were taking it too f**king far. That’s when it’s hard to get respect like, “God, they’re wannabes” or stuff like that.AHHA: Would you consider any of those bands Hip-Hop?Jonathan Davis: [long pause] No. None of those bands were true Hip-Hop bands. I mean, Hip-Hop bands like The Roots or real bands, but at that time, no. Maybe Limp Bizkit a little bit. They had those influences, but it became such a “Frat Boy, Rocky” type of thing; it turned into something else.AHHA: When Korn debuted the Family Values Tour back in ‘99, you guys brought out several promising nu-metal bands and even an MCs like Ice Cube. Then, during the next two outings, Ja Rule, Method Man, Redman, and Xzibit joined the ranks. Even Mobb Deep and DMX showed up. What made you decide to showcase both rock groups and rappers?Jonathan Davis: I just wanted to bring a show that was cool and everybody knew we were influenced by Hip-Hop, so we were just giving something back to them. We wanted to give [rappers] a forum to be able to play in front of people they normally wouldn’t be in front of, and a lot of kids were big into it. It was a whole new audience for them. It just worked out for everybody. Let’s have something cool. Let’s have some new rock bands and a Hip-Hop act and make it cool, because rock kids listen to Hip-Hop and Hip-Hop kids listen to some rock. So it all just worked together.AHHA: After the 2001 tour, Family Values went on the backburner. Why did the tour take a leave of absence?Jonathan Davis: We weren’t finding the bands we wanted to go on it and we decided to put it to sleep for a while. We decided to bring it back when we did See you On The Other Side [Korn’s seventh studio album]. It was a different time period. We turned it more into a more rock-oriented tour and a mixture of different styles of rock bands.AHHA: Since reviving it in 2006, there hasn’t been much Hip-Hop representation on Family Values.Jonathan Davis: Yeah, we haven’t really been able to do it. I mean, people I look up and like for it is Lil’ Jon, or any kind of crunk artist. I love crunk because it’s badass beats and motherf**kers screaming over the top. I really dig that. Or the snap sh*t, the Paul Wall, Mike Jones Swishahouse sh*t was f**king dope. But it’s a different time right now.AHHA: If you found the right rappers, would you consider bringing them on the tour?Jonathan Davis: Oh yeah. In the future I’d love to do that stuff.AHHA: While we’re talking about it, who are some of your favorite rappers nowadays?Jonathan Davis: Right now, Lil’ Jon definitely. He’s my boy. Ice Cube. Young Joc. My son loves “It’s Goin’ Down.”AHHA: Do you like Soulja Boy?Jonathan Davis: I haven’t heard Soulja Boy. It’s so hard to keep up. So much stuff is coming out. When I listen to Hip-Hop, I listen to Rakim and Big Daddy Kane. That’s the sh*t I love! Rakim is the best MC ever. I loved his rhymes, the way he flowed, his voice; everything about him. I listen to it before I go on stage. “Microphone Fiend” is so killer. It’s a DJ with a beat and a mic, and that’s all it was. Just give me a f**king kick drum, a snare and some jingle bells. It was cool. Jingle bells in the background is really cool sh*t.AHHA: Nice. Back to Korn, most heads took notice once the video for “Twisted Transistor” was unveiled because it featured David Banner, Lil’ Jon, Snoop Dogg and Xzibit portraying Korn during a performance. Where did the concept derive from?Jonathan Davis: It just seemed like all they were playing on MTV at the time were rap videos and we thought, “How f**king cool would it be if we took our homeys – because all those guys are our friends – have them play us and see what we could make?” We got with David Meyers , and he thought it was great. It just came out killer. It was awesome seeing Snoop and everybody, and it worked out good. And a lot of Hip-Hop fans love that video too.AHHA: Shortly thereafter, you guys mashed-up your follow-up single, “Coming Undone,” with Dem Franchize Boyz’ hit “Lean Wit It, Rock Wit It,” for “ Coming Undone Wit It.” How did the collaboration come about?Jonathan That idea came from our label because they were on Virgin and they were like, “You should do a mash-up together.” And I was like, “F**k, I haven’t done any sh*t with any Hip-Hop artists in so long, hell yeah.” So I hooked up with them, did some vocals in the studio, just f**ked around with it and came out as cool.AHHA: Are you guys interested in following Jay-Z and Linkin Park’s lead by doing a mash-up?Jonathan Davis: Yeah, but it’s done. We could do something like that, but I don’t know how big it would be.AHHA: So, are there any rappers you’d like to work with?Jonathan Davis: Well, if the opportunity comes up. I’m not really thinking about it that much because we just got done with this record, but I’d love to do sh*t with Snoop or Lil’ Jon. AHHA: Sounds tight. Hey, I see you sporting the grills.Jonathan Davis: Yeah, I got a couple of them. Those are f**king awesome. I freak people out.AHHA: Who made your grills by the way?Jonathan Davis: Paul Wall.AHHA: Oh, he did? Jonathan Davis: Yep, I asked Lil’ Jon, “Hey dude, where the f**k do you get your sh*t?” And he was like, “Oh, I get it from Paul Wall.” I got his number, hit his email and called him up. He was all like, “I’ll hook you up.” I sent him my impressions and he hooked me up. I got a crazy rolls-gold, ruby grill, and I got the invisible set –  the Paul Wall special with all diamonds in it. It’s cool. That’s how we roll!AHHA: You say it so gangsta.Jonathan Davis: It’s how we roll. That’s just how we roll. I’m not a gangsta in the slightest, by the way. [laughs]AHHA: Don’t lie.Jonathan Davis: [laughs] I’m a little gangster.Watch Korn’s video for “Twisted Transistor” featuring Lil’ Jon, Snoop Dogg, Xzibit, and David Banner

AllHipHop Staff Picks—10.28.07

Back again, with more of the joints we think you should be checking for, or made aware of anyway. Yes, we know, but Illseed does what Illseed wants to do and he didn’t send in his pick, yet. DoveGucci Mane f/ Ludacris & Lil Kim “Freaky Gurl (Remix)” Liked the original, loved the remix with Luda at the top of the Summer… it took the nation forever and a day to latch on to this song, but I’m glad they came with Lil Kim on this new mix for a refresher. “Freaky Gurl” isn’t a song for your computer—it’s to be appreciated as a Friday-night-at-the-club-after-three-drinks kinda thing.JigsawJay-Z “No Hook”I know American Gangster is not out, but I have to pick Jay-Z’s “No Hook.” The song clearly shows Jigga taking people through the plight of a young man that has decisions to make. But, I love to delve into the darker side of life and really seeing people example the “why” behind the final product seen in the street. Kathy IandoliJanelle Monae “Violet Stars Happy Hunting”Dare I say she can be the female Andre3000? Dare I say!ODeiselIce Cube “My Summer Vacation”Before his present incarnation as the king of the kiddie movies, Ice Cube was at one point the most potent street poet in Hip-Hop. Cube atomically dogs the George Clinton sample,  methodically chronicling how gang violence spread like the plague across America (in this case St. Louis). No hooks.  No gimmicks. No glamorization.  No happy ending. Tupac was never this good. Throw up your W’s.AquaIce Cube “The Ni**a Ya Love To Hate”Feeling ODeisel on the Cube tip (pause). Craig from Friday and The Bomb Squad created some heaters. But in light of Nas’ dubious album titling (you lost if you think he really thought Hip-Hop danced with the reaper), this funk ride from Amerikkka’s Most Wanted is a perfect example of focused rap rage’s ability to send jabs to the establishment. “Kickin’ sh*t called street knowledge/Why are more ni**as in the pen than in college?/Because of that line I might be your cellmate…”Martin A. BerriosBravehearts f/ Nas “Eat These Bullets”Something you might of missed in ’04.  Bravehearts and Nas flowing over the break from EPMD’s classic “You’re A Customer.”  While normally Wiz and Jungle don’t do much, both go in heavy on that street ish.  Even with a lazy flow, Esco is still killing most of these Rap chumps.

The Wizards never had a chance entering the playoffs versus the Cleveland Cavaliers.  All-stars Gilbert Arenas and Caron Butler both suffered season ending injuries right before the first round matchup leaving forward Antawn Jamison to fend for himself.  Now that Butler and Arenas are healthy, expect to see the best trio in the NBA last season.  They have no shortage of youth as 2006 first round selection Oleksiy Pecherov and 2007 first round Nick Young provide much needed punch off the bench.  The Southeast Division has gotten stronger in some areas, but weaker in others, so this Wizards team has everything to gain.  They can create so much havoc in the playoffs if healthy.  If Gilbert Arenas continues on his torrid pace of hitting clutch shots, the Wizards will be one of the most entertaining teams to watch in the league.

The bad:  Arenas’ and Butler’s injuries last season exposed a roster that is very thin.  Not good for a team trying to keep their star guard.

Arenas has stated that he will opt out of his deal at season’s end to test the free agent market.  Although the aforementioned Young and Pecherov will bolster a thin bench, the loss of starting center Etan Thomas to a heart condition will hurt.  His backup and occasional foe Brendan Haywood will have to take his place and at some point, find the heart he has always lacked.  Eddie Jordan will have his hands full, especially if the injury bug strikes once again.  One of the three best teams in the league for most of the season, injuries caused them to fall to .500 and the 7th seed in the East.  There’s no safety net for this team, making Arenas and Butler much more valuable.

The outlook: 3rd in the East, 1st in the division, good health, a lot of game winners from Agent Zero, BUT… another first round matchup with the Cavs, another first round loss, a following offseason of concern over Arenas’ desire to stay in DC.

Miami Heat

Projected Starting Lineup:

C Shaquille O’Neal

PF Udonis Haslem

SF Ricky Ravis

SG Dwyane Wade

PG Jason Williams

Coach: Pat Riley

The good: Anytime you have a healthy Shaq and D-Wade on your team, you always have a chance to win.

Injuries took a major toll on this team heading into their first round matchup with the upstart Chicago Bulls.  Dwyane Wade tried to grit his teeth and try to play through a damaged shoulder, but it was not enough as they lost to the Bulls in a sweep.  (note: Wade is slated to miss the first few weeks of the season recovering from shoulder surgery)  However, once Wade is able to return, he is one of the best scorers in the NBA and can single handedly carry a team to victory.  I believe Shaq will have a bounce back season statistically as he tries to get one more championship before retirement talk begins to settle in.

After trading to get Daequan Cook in the 2007 Draft, the Heat will have instant offense off the bench.  Point guard Jason Williams has something to play for in a contract year.  The recently acquired Ricky Davis also has alot to prove, and Miami may not be done yet with rumors of Mike Bibby, and Ron Artest fading but still lingering.  The wild card is forward Dorrell Wright.  The high school product needs to start so he can show how good he can be.  If given that opportunity, a breakout season may be on the horizon.

The bad: Injuries, food, and lack of desire threaten to destroy this once championship team.

The Heat had a terrible offseason, failing to land another impact player or scorer (Lakers fans will tell you free agent acquisition Smush Parker is not that).  As previously stated, Wade is going to miss time this season over an injury he should have taken care of last season.  The Heat got old very quickly as Shaq and Alonzo Mourning got another year older (Mourning has stated he will retire after the season ends).  Add that to the fact that Shaq likes to take half of the season off to nurse injuries and you now have a team that features Dwyane Wade and a bunch of question marks. With the talent in the Southeast division developing, the window of opportunity is closing for the Heat.

The outlook: 8th in the East, 2nd in the division, a first round exit once again, and a serious debate over whether this team needs to rebuild around Wade again.  They get in by the skin of their teeth.

Orlando Magic

Projected Starting Lineup:

C Dwight Howard

PF Rashard LewisSF Hedo TurkogluSG Trevor ArizaPG Jameer Nelson

Coach: Stan Van Gundy

The good: Dwight Howard is still improving.

The Orlando Magic re-signed center Dwight Howard to a 5 year $85 million deal this summer.  Good, because Howard is an absolute beast.  Finishing third in rebounds per game, Howard is one low post move away from being the scariest young big man in the NBA.  Helping in providing Howard with an offensive is game is former Heat head coach Stan Van Gundy.  After Florida Gators coach Billy Donovan accepted a 5 year deal only to renege a week later, Stan will be the savior of Central Florida.

Newly acquired forward Rashard Lewis will bring his 22.4 PPG from the Seattle Supersonics to the Magic Kingdom.  This team is young and athletic with guard Trevor Ariza ready to shine after being buried on the Knicks bench to start his career.  If they get a lead late, then the game is pretty much over with J.J. Redick on the line.  After former coach Brian Hill failed to use him, expect to see more playing time for the former Duke star.

The bad: For a team that has many impending free agents, spending so much money on Rashard Lewis might be a move they will regret down the line.

This is a team filled with young shooters and point guards.  The problem is, there isn’t enough money to give out to these players.  Guards Trevor Ariza and J.J. Redick are due for extensions and the Magic cannot afford to lose them.  After all, they did misuse and lose center Darko Milicic to the Memphis Grizzlies this offseason.  Now with Tony Battie out with a rotator cuff injury, they are severely thin at the power forward and center spots.  They will miss Darko more than they could have deemed imaginable.  Maybe giving Lewis $110 million over 6 years might not pay off the way they’d like.  Also, some players have to step up.  Carlos Arroyo looks like Steve Nash in Olympic play, but like a third stringer in the NBA.  Somehow, he must put everything together and be effective as do Redick, Ariza, and center James Augustine who will now have a bigger role in Battie’s absence.

The outlook: 9th in the east, 3rd in the division, and an always happy Howard becoming frustrated.

Atlanta Hawks

Projected Starting Lineup:

C Shelden Williams

PF Josh Smith

SF Marvin Williams

SG Joe Johnson

PG Acie Law IV

Coach: Ron Woodson

The good:  Stop the presses! The Hawks finally drafted a point guard! His name is Acie Law IV.

Although the Hawks did not land Greg Oden or Kevin Durant in the 2007 NBA Draft, they had the #3 and #11 picks respectively to add to their young core of players.  #3 pick and Florida Gators standout Al Horford is my pick for Rookie of the Year.  While everyone else is out sipping the Durant Kool-Aid, Horford will show everyone that he is the most NBA ready player to come out of this draft class.  He alongside Shelden Williams aka The Landlord aka Mr. Candace Parker will give the Hawks a much needed low post presence.

The Hawks are never short on swingmen, but at least they have some great talent at those positions.  Josh Smith is ready to win a Defensive Player of the Year award at his progressive rate and Joe Johnson is one of the best shooting guards in the NBA, let alone the Eastern Conference.  The biggest acquisition for them was passing up Ohio State guard Mike Conley at #3 and taking Acie Law IV out of Texas A&M.  Although Law still needs time to fully learn the NBA PG position, he will show everyone that Atlanta can make a run at their first playoff appearance since 1999.

The bad:  Coach Mike Woodson is on a short leash.  He might not be around to watch the Hawks fly high.

Mike Woodson has had plenty of time to get this Hawks team competitive.  Unfortunately, with ownership in disarray and lack of fan support in Atlanta, it’s hard to get this team going.  Woodson unfortunately will be a coach that will get fired before the team truly gets better.  Now, with so much youth, one wonders how it hasn’t paid off yet.  GM Billy Knight has unnecessarily overstocked certain positions while leaving others, mainly point guard, thin.  His biggest faux pas was drafting UNC bench player Marvin Williams #2 overall in the 2005 NBA Draft, right before the triumvirate of Deron Williams, Chris Paul, and Raymond Felton.  Oooww.  If Marvin can’t show signs of being a franchise level type of forward, Atlanta just might have to take a L on this experiment and move on.  This team is one year from hitting greatness, but they have to play out this year first.

The outlook: 10th in the East, 4th in the division.

Charlotte Bobcats

Projected Starting Lineup:

C Emeka Okafor

PF Walter HerrmannSF Gerald WallaceSG Jason RichardsonPG Raymond Felton

Coach: Sam Vincent

The good: Gerald Wallace and Jason Richardson are ready to be one of the most lethal duos in the Eastern Conference.

The Bobcats have a done a good job since their creation in 2004.  Last season Gerald Wallace emerged as their best player, showing the promise fans were deprived of seeing when he was on the Sacramento Kings.  With a draft day trade sending #8 overall pick Brandan Wright to Golden State Warriors for star guard Jason Richardson, now the Bobcats have two scorers Raymond Felton can pass to.

First year coach Sam Vincent has a lot to look forward to as J-Rich and Wallace combined with franchise center Emeka Okafor can become a devastating three-fifths of a starting lineup.  Also, Walter Herrmann and Matt Carroll were big surprises as they were both signed off the scrap heap and produced very well during the second half of the season, giving them added depth.  First round pick Jared Dudley will bring a hard nosed edge to this team as it is now developing a new identity as a physically imposing squad.

The bad: Injuries are already decimating the team before the season starts.  The last thing they need now is an inconsistent Raymond Felton.

Sean May and Adam Morrison, both supposed to be key members of the Bobcats’ bench, will be out for the season with knee injuries.  That is a big blow to this team who have had to deal with an injury prone Okafor and inconsistent play from their point guard Raymond Felton.  The 5th pick of the 2005 NBA Draft, he has found himself one step behind Deron Williams and Chris Paul in terms of development.  Now is the time for Felton to get better now that Brevin Knight has moved on to the Los Angeles Clippers.  He needs to cut down on the turnovers and become more assertive.  Okafor in a contract must try to remain healthy because he helps no one in street clothes.

The outlook: 12th in the East, 5th in the division, but this says more about the division than about the team.  This division has potential to be the best one in the next year or two.

Game Review: Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions

Platform: PSP

Developer: Square Enix

Rating: 4 out of 5

Nearly a decade has passed since the original release of Final Fantasy: Tactics for the Playstation. Square-Enix has granted the wishes of many with this turn-based strategy gem, Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions for the Playstation Portable (PSP). Released after Final Fantasy VII in 1998, the Tactics franchise was widely overlooked due to the massive popularity of FF7. Final Fantasy Tactics deviated from the original course of the main Final Fantasy series, and this PSP title retains all the original charm, elegance, and absorbing gameplay from its predecessor while tacking on some extras.

Initially, you’re presented with a tutorial mode which is highly beneficial for anyone who isn’t familiar with the mechanics and the backstory. It covers everything from the battle system, the job system, and the lore of Ivalice. There’s a wealth of information that is almost necessary and will help you on your journey.

Your character begins the journey as a Squire or Chemist. From there, you can level up these jobs and branch off into other professions like Knight, Black Mage, and White Mage, etc..  Battles take place on a field of tiles of varying height and different terrains, with variables suchs weather impacting skirmishes as well. Each character can move a certain distance and posses a different attack range, similar to chess.

You’re allowed to have 5 players on the field and a maximum of 24 selectable characters in your army. As you engage in battles, you’ll gain job points for your main job, which allows you to buy abilities. Simple, right? Well…it is pretty simple. Fight baddies, use items, gain experience points and job points, rinse and repeat. Ahh, gotta love the RPG grind! In order to achieve the higher jobs, you’ll need to temper and hone your characters as much as possible. Levelling up your jobs unlocks more advanced ones.

The plot is concrete and linear; Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions isn’t a game that allows you to choose your own path.  It’s a tale of dueling families, friends killing each other and unsuspecting villainy; very Shakespearean. As the plot progresses, new areas are opened up on the world map. You can travel back to older areas to battle, go to towns to stock up on wares, or you can press ahead to advance the story. An additional feature is the ability to battle friends over local ad-hoc wifi. Multiplayer mode also adds some hours by letting you team up with a friend for challenges or pit your parties against each other. Being ad-hoc only, you’ll need to find a buddy with a copy of the game around your level.

Overall, Final Fantasy: The War of the Lions is an impressive port to the PSP. It is a solid title, and always welcomed in the rather hungry-for-games PSP landscape. Lions packs so much content you’ll be busy with your PSP for hours. If you didn’t get a chance to play the original title, then you cannot pass up this magnificent update

Ransom: Hostile Negotiations

“Why these mothaf*ckas keep not trying to put you on?,” a hypeman asks incredulously on New Jersey rapper Ransom’s Pain & Glory mixtape, echoing the thoughts of critics, internet forums and the streets alike. With the A-Team’s aptly titled Hardhood Classics mixtape trilogy, Ransom and his now-estranged partner Hitchcock won accolades for trading prize punchlines and grimy verses over borrowed beats.  The group’s affiliation with DJ Clue’s Desert Storm helped Ran and Hitch gain exposure, which according to Ransom facilitated a meeting during which L.A. Reid agreed to sign on the dotted line.  The Def Jam deal never came to fruition, Hitchcock was briefly incarcerated, and the relationship between the two partners went bad.  Following the A Team’s 2006 split, Hitchcock fell back while Ransom inaugurated his solo career with features on DJ Clue’s Fidel Cashflow and Fabolous’ Loso’s Way. On astring of mixtape releases leading up to the recent Best In the City 2, Ransom’s lyrics have grown increasingly introspective, cautionary and determined.   Following Joe Budden’s unapproved reunion of A-Team on Mood Musik 3, lyrical darts have been thrown between the two New Jersey natives. In a conversation with Allhiphop.com just prior to the sparring, Ransom subtly hinted at some burgeoning tension with Budden. Hungrier than ever, ‘duffle bag Ran’ announced his intention to win over the game by brute lyrical force. AllHipHop: You recently wrote a heartfelt song about Stack Bundles, “Tell It Like It Is.” Was it therapeutic for you to go in the booth and do that?Ransom: It actually was. If you listen to it, I wasn’t even talking about it and it just came out. I didn’t go in intentionally to talk about that but that’s what happened, so I guess it was therapeutic.AllHipHop: You’ve said in your lyrics that you give the good and the bad of the hood, but people still label you as negative.  Do you think people understand the messages you’re putting out there?Ransom: Nah, I don’t think people are really listening yet.  Either when I get famous or rich or whatever, people will go back and listen to what I actually used to say and go “Oh yeah, I guess he did talk about that.” I think they’re like “Oh, he’s hard or whatever, he said gun in this line and the beats hard, gangsta rapper.”  But if you look deeper, there’s amessage.AllHipHop: How much do you think that your affiliation with Desert Storm and DJClue has helped your career?Ransom: It definitely furthered my career as far as being heard, I just wonder how far they can take me. But to this point it’s furthered me, I guess to its pinnacle, I don’t know if you can go any further. I’m not trying to start anything, but I’m just wondering. AllHipHop: Does Clue help you when it comes to shopping you to labels?Ransom: I have no idea.  Probably one meeting when I was with the A-Team and we went to Def Jam and we seen LA Reid and we were actually gonna sign there but something happened, Jay Z got there and it was “Let me look it over” and all that sh*t, and it just didn’t go down after that.AllHipHop: So LA Reid was feeling the A-Team?Ransom: When we went there it was actually a go, definitely a go. We had a celebration and everything. But everything happens for a reason, now I’m solo and starting something new.AllHipHop: You start off the “This Is Family” posse cut on Fabolous’ new album. Do you feel like at this stage in your career features such as those help much?Ransom: Nah, not at this stage.  Not where the state of rap is right now, [there’s] probably nobody I could do a record with that would make a dent as far as people talking like “Oh wow, he did a record with this person, I’m gonna give him a deal.” AllHipHop: You and Hitchcock were really compatible. Do you ever miss thatchemistry you had in the booth?Ransom: Not really, I didn’t look at it as chemistry cause it was a group and it was like “You do your verse, I do my verse.” You put any two good rappers together and they gonna sound compatible I guess, but if you really look into the music, we were never talking about anything except guns, b###### and drugs.  We never had a message or a subject to talk about.AllHipHop: Do you think the split with A-Team furthered your career?Ransom: I don’t know if it furthered it, I’d say that creatively it probably furthered it. With a partner you don’t really get to explore your creativity.  It’s like I wanna talk about this, alright, let’s talk about that.  But I can’t really get on the track and talk about my father and another n**** come on and talk about hittin’ a n**** with a bat in the knee, the s### just don’t match up. But I’d make any situation work, so if we still was the A-Team, it’d still be the same s### as far as where I’m at right now.AllHipHop: Since you and Hitch dropped “The Truth” and “Emotions” explaining yoursplit, has anything changed between you guys, are you talking at all?Ransom: I haven’t seen him, I haven’t seen Hitch in a long, long, long time. But I don’t got no hard feelings. I’m just trying to do my thing, I know he’s trying to do his thing. I wouldn’t say nothing to try to digress what he’s trying to do. If he’s trying to still do it and still get a deal. If I can help you, I help you. But I haven’t talked to him in a long time, so take it for what it’s worth.AllHipHop: You allude to quitting a lot in your music, do you get frustrated with the rap game?Ransom: Yeah, every other day.  And then I sit down and I write and it comes out.  If I didn’t have the avenue to write, I’d do harm.  But I have the avenue and I release it and it gets better the next day.  I think about it all the time. I think about “Why the f*ck?” I’m notsaying I’m the greatest, well actually I am saying I’m the greatest but still… Why the f*ck is n****s not checking for me? AllHipHop: You have the respect, but you’re not on yet.  Do you have any answers to why that is?Ransom: Yeah well I think about this 24/7, I got a lot of time to think about it.  I come up with 1,000 theories, but I don’t know which one is correct.  People respect the lyrics and respect me as far as that. As far as visibility and press, I don’t get the press time that other rappers get, even the other unsigned artists, you probably see them more than you see me.  You might see a Murda Mook more than you see me. No disrespect to what he’s doing. You might hear me more than you hear other people, but how many times have you seen me?AllHipHop: On that song “Where Did It Go Wrong?”, Joe Budden says “Things justhaven’t been the same since the A-Team split,” what was that about?Ransom: I don’t know what he’s talking about.  What is he talking about? What hasn’t been the same since A Team split? I don’t understand that s###. Like the world hasn’t been the same, or the game?  Nobody knows us. What hasn’t been the same? His life? Did we affect his life that much? I’m just wondering.AllHipHop: He helped put A-Team on, so did something go wrong there?Ransom: I still talk to Joe, I ain’t got no problem with Joe. I’m on Mood Music 3, if he doesn’t take me off or whatever.  Nah he’s from Jersey City, so there’s never gonna be no animosity.  He says what he feels, I guess he feels like things haven’t been the same since the A-Team split.  I don’t get it, I don’t know… nobody really knew us, we was up and coming, we was trying to do our thing. But maybe things wasn’t the same for him cause we had his f*ckin’ back as far as n***** coming at him and we was right there in the back like “Yeah, what’s good?” Maybe that hasn’t been the same. AllHipHop: Why do you think so many rappers from New Jersey are underrated?Ransom: There hasn’t really been nobody prominent from Jersey to come in the game and really stand out. Like Redman, but then he became a comedian and he started doing slapstick. And Queen Latifah, didn’t she start doing slapstick? If you from New York or Brooklyn, ni**** got a handout to pull you up cause there’s always a Brooklyn n**** in the game, there’s always a Queens n**** in the game, there’s always aHarlem n**** in the game. There’s never a Jersey n**** in the game..AllHipHop: What’s next for you?Ransom: I’m trying to take over the world, this game is trash.  I’m trying to bring a little rap back to it.  People might think I’m crazy saying I’m the top 5 or whatever, but that’s the kind of sh*t you gotta say when people don’t notice you.  So I’m gonna start saying a whole bunch of crazy sh*t, and maybe people will start listening and say “You know what? This guy is actually good.”   Best In the City 2 is out, I got another mixtape Ransom Note, coming right after that and it’s 10 times more crack. Once you hear that, you’re gonna put your head through the wall.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Dre & Eminem – Back?

KANYE WEST WALKS IN THE MUSLIM WORLD!

Antoinnette is my Navy Chick and she’s stationed over there in Dubai. She told me about Mr. West coming over there to perform. Well, Kanye did it and he even performed “Jesus Walks,” even though Dubai is a decidedly Muslim area. What he didn’t do, was cuss, Antoinnette says, because then he could end up in jail like Dallas Austin minus the alleged drugs. Anyway, he did about a 30 min set in front of about 20,000 people. People loved it even though he used words like “m### man.” He even did a freestyle about how he couldn’t curse. Thanks, Antoinnette – my Navy boo in my dreams.

DRE AND EMINEM ON THE ROLL AGAIN

I’m getting some positive news out of the Eminem camp. From what I understand Eminem and Dr. Dre recently got out of a Detroit studio from working on new material. As you know, Dre pushed back Detox – in part – so he could work on Eminem’s CD. We’re hoping that Eminem can get a release date in the near future. I am hearing some good stuff on that date, but I don’t want to put the date I am hearing.

PRODUCERS FIGHT OVER CHAMILLIONAIRE…

I don’t know what the hell is going on, but a pair of producers are fighting over a song called “You Must Be Crazy.” One dude in Philly named Dave MG said he did it and he is getting the credit for doing it. Now, Jomeezius the Genius is allegedly pursing legal action to be properly credited as the producer. Funny thing is, he’s from Denver. Strange. Well, whoever did it, I want to say thanks, because the song is super tight.

ILLSEED’S QUICKIES

Shout out to Kim Kardashian. She has done what most stars do when they hit 35-40. She posed nude for Playboy. Thanks for giving up the goodies.

I heard that somebody was arrested for the noose and vandalism associated with the Tupac statue, but I can’t find anything to support that.

Shout out to The Clipse, who recently signed a deal with Columbia.

Looks like Jigga Man sprung a lil’ leakie leak.

So that manager of Mobb Deep that I was talking about stands accused. There are a couple of Mobb Deep CD’s on Amazon.com that really seal the deal.

R.I.P. to Tom Joyner’s dad. I heard he passed away so condolences go out to him.

My boy from Toronto told me that Tevin Campbell is about to make a run for a comeback. He’s apparently been booked to do a show in Canada to get it poppin.

Shout out to Ricky Smiley. All this time, I thought he was a clown, but he’s really active in the community in Dallas. In the Pleasant Grove section, they have started a nightly patrol in the neighborhoods to look out for the other citizens. I heard the drug situation is out of control.

Nas might not get away with naming his CD The N-Word. Click here to read how this whole thing is going to possibly hit Universal in the wallet.

BIZZY BONE IS COMIN BACK – WITH DMX!

I was just asking, “Where is DMX?” and my folks at XM radio hit me with this one. Bizzy’s first single is working with DMX. This is great. For the full scoop, check the video. It seems like Bizzy dissed Jamie Foxxx…I’m not sure. Check it.

I heard DMX was down there in Ft Lauderdale a lot lately and has recorded a song with Junior Reid. Additionally, I heard DMX was set for a show in New Mexico, but after TI was arrested and jailed, a lotta people took advantage of the refund offered. Still some of the people that went to the show told me X was quite liquored up and all most fell trying to climb on a speaker.

SIGNS THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END!

WOW. The world is just going crazy and we’re concerned with saggy jeans. Check this out. A British man took a page out of the deranged R.Kelly files. He screamed, “This is YouTube material!” as he peed on a dying woman that had collapsed in the street. The woman was 50 and she suffered from pancreatic failure. In addition to urinating on her, he also poured water on her and sprayed her with shaving cream. The whole thing was recorded on a mobile phone so I am sure this will become youtube material. Oh yea, he was high and drunk. He got three years in jail for his momentary fall into insanity.

MAN SUBMITS HIS LETTER OF RESIGNATION – FROM HIP-HOP!

This isn’t a rumor. This is a fact. Some dude sent me an email as his resignation from Hip-Hop. I don’t know his background, age, race or anything else like that, but I found it pretty humorous in parts. There are other parts that are sad. I will leave what is what to you. Check it out.

Whaddup,

After listening to most of the recent albums, including those from Kanye, 50, and a stolen version of Jay… I would like to announce to the entire Hip Hop community and all of its affiliates that as of now I am turning in my letter of resignation.  I fought through what I first considered a temporary lull in good music; taking shelter in sparsely released “decent” albums but D#####….  NO MORE!!!  50 is cliche, Kanye is “off” and Jay is (sigh)…Hova is….(sigh)THE KING IS DEAD!!!  I refuse to listen to weirdo, reject rap like Brother Ali and dead Prez.  The South is not an option because I’m educated.  Talib and his bohemian buddy Common attract too many white people.  Nas never bounced back from his emasculation. And most of all Dr. Dre will NEVER release Detox.  The future shows no promise.  Wayne, Lupe, Saigon, Papoose….WHATEVER

For these reasons, and many others I must leave you all to seek better music.  I will always remember the great times we had:

Death Certificate,  Midnight Mauraders, Ready to Die, The Blueprint, The Chronic, Reasonable Doubt, The Diary, Liquid Swords, Late Registration, Uptown Saturday Night, It Was Written, The Infamous, Southernplayalistic… but what have you done for me lately?

So, like we used to say before everybody got so fly and cute and h###-friendly….Peace

Cacheous D. Worst

T.I. Released From Prison On $3 Million Dollars Bond

A judge ordered rap superstar T.I. released from prison on $3 million dollars bond today (October 26) but the rapper must stay in home confinement until his federal trial for possession of machine guns and silencers.

Judge Alan Baverman said the rapper will be restricted to a house in Henry County, Georgia and will be monitored 24 hours a day by a private monitoring service that he must also pay for.

The judge said that T.I. was to have no contact with witnesses or informants associated with the case.

T.I., born Clifford Harris, is charged with possession of unregistered machine guns and silencers and possession of firearms by a convicted felon.

The rapper was arrested in Atlanta on October 13 by agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) after he allegedly attempted to purchase three machine guns and two silencers from an undercover agent, acting as an arms dealer.

Police also found loaded weapons and marijuana on T.I. when they arrested him. A subsequent raid of his Atlanta mansion turned up a cache of loaded automatic weapons.

“On behalf of the family and friends of T.I., we appreciate the global outpouring of concern that he has received during this period,” representatives for the rapper said. “T.I. is humbled by the overwhelming encouragement he is getting from his fans and offers his profound thanks to all.”

Earlier this week on ESPN SportsCenter, Mike Greenberg of Mike and Mike in the Morning asked Hall of Famer Steve Young who was the better QB, Tom Brady or Peyton Manning?  Young reacted as if his manhood was being questioned and thought that was a ridiculous question.  He didn’t attempt to answer the question and moved on from the topic.  The next day, Greenberg brought it up in conversation with his co-host Mike Golic and Golic’s opinion was that Brady is having a better year than Manning, but Manning is the better overall QB.  That’s an answer I have no problem with.  I think the big man hit the nail right on the head.

Later in show, Phil Simms came on and the guys asked him the same question.  He too reacted to the question the same way Young did, but then said the best line to end the whole discussion.  It was better than what Golic said.  Simms just said, “Who cares?”  You know what, he’s right.  Who cares?  Both players are on great teams and are playing great football this year.  They are destined for a battle next week if both teams stay undefeated this weekend.

Brady is putting up some good numbers and with the addition of Randy Moss; the Patriots are just too strong offensively for a number of defenses this year.  Manning is playing like he has always played since he entered the league; smart and precise.  He’s easily the smartest QB in the league right now and arguably in history of the NFL.

So as a fan of football, I am asking for a favor from my pigskin family.  Starting tonight, and every night leading up to Sunday’s games, light your candles, get on your knees and pray to the football gods.  Ask the Holy Trinity of Football (Lombardi, Halas, and Hunt) to keep the Pats and the Colts undefeated for their Week 9 match-up.  With the history between the two teams, you know that’s going to be one of the games of the year.

1pm games:

Game of the week: Detroit Lions (4-2) vs. Chicago Bears (3-4)

Location: Soldier Field, Chicago, IL

The Lions won the 1st game between these two teams back in Week 4 with a 37-27 score.  Since then, the Lions are 2nd in the NFC North and 6th in the NFC overall.  The Bears are 3rd in the NFC North and 9th in the NFC overall.  The Lions have shown much improvement on the offensive side of the ball, but their defense is still shaky.  The Bears offense has improved with Brian Griese taking over at QB, but their defense is not performing like the Bears’ defense from a year ago.  The Lions are ranked 30th while the Bears are ranked 25th overall defensively.  Don’t look for too many big plays on the defensive side of the ball for either team. Whichever team wins, it will have to come from the much improved offense of both of these teams.

Lions’ QB Jon Kitna needs 6 more wins to fulfill his promise of 10 wins for the season.   It’s possible, but it will be a task.  They still have to play the Packers twice and they have the Giants and the Cowboys on their schedule.  If the Lions are gong to win this game, they have to establish a run game with RB Kevin Jones.  With Jones returning this week, the Lions should be able to wear down an injured Bears defense with a good mix of run and pass.  Also, as stated every week by every football analyst in the country, don’t kick the ball to Devin Hester.  The guy can hurt you in so many ways; it’s not funny anymore.

The Bears need to protect Griese and make sure RB Adrian Peterson doesn’t touch the ball.  Despite his 6 INTs, Griese has thrown for 1203 yards for 8 TDs and has completed 62% of his passes for the season.  In last Sunday’s win against the Eagles, he was 27 for 41 with 322 passing yards and 1 touchdown.  The good thing about Griese is that he utilizes all of his targets.  He “shares the wealth” with his receivers and opens up the offense.

Peterson is having a miserable start to the season.  He has 26 carries for 116 yards and no touchdowns this year and is slowly finding his comfort zone on the bench.  The Bears must find a way to keep their secondary locked on the Lions WRs and throw them off their routes and force them to run the ball with Jones, who is seeing his first real action this Sunday.  Hopefully a “rusty” Jones will be the “Achilles’ heel” for the Lions.

My Pick: Bears

Pittsburgh Steelers (4-2) vs. Cincinnati Bengals (2-4)

Location: Brown Stadium, Cincinnati, OH

Chad Johnson said that he would stop doing all of his celebratory until the Bengals start winning again.  Then there was a rumor this week about the Bengals trading Chad.  Hopefully it was rumor and Chad stays in Cinncy.  Not only does the team need him, but the city needs him also.  Although he’s a wide receiver, and WRs can be “prima donnas”, Chad makes the game fun.  He gives the fans a reason to watch because he’s enjoying himself on the field.  Yeah, he may have had a few choice words with Carson Palmer a few weeks back in their loss to the Patriots, but how many times have we seen that before.  Besides, with the way the Patriots have been playing, everybody has a few choice words on their respective sidelines.

Considering the Bengals’ past, Chad is the best thing to happen to the city of Cincinatti since the “Ickey Shuffle”.  Also, don’t even think about getting rid of Marvin Lewis.  He’s as good of a head coach as there is in the League.  He just doesn’t have the defensive tools he has had in the past few seasons to stay on pace with the rest of the league.

The Bengals’ problem is their defense.  The Bengals have the 29th ranked defense in the league. Yikes!  Considering they were the 8th ranked defense last season, all you can do is smack your head in amazement. The offense has to run up the scoreboard just so they can stay in the game with their opponents.  They are the 4th ranked offense in the league totaling 387 yard from scrimmage and averaging 371.7 yards a game.  Carson Palmer has 1717 yards, 13 TDs and 9 INTs for the season in passing.  If the Jets hadn’t suffered a “brain fart” in the 2nd half of last Sunday’s game, the Bengals would have lost that game and would be 1-5.

The Bengals need to do the same thing the Broncos did the Steelers in last Sunday’s night game.  They have to throw Ben Roethlisberger off his game and hold off the Steelers’ run game.  Willie Parker and Najeh Davenport have combined for 172 carries for 815 yards and 4 TDs.  The number of TDs isn’t staggering, but the combined yardage is what you want from a team that uses a two running back system.

All the Steelers have to do is to make sure Roethlisberger doesn’t make any of the mistakes he made in last Sunday’s loss.  Granted, he threw 4 TD passes; he also had 2 INTs and a lost fumble.  If the Steelers protect “Big Ben” and give him time in the pocket, he’ll make things happen. Defensively, the Steelers are still the #1 ranked defense in the league, so there’s no need for any explanation or suggestion on what they need to do defensively to win.  The Steelers are already doing it.

My Pick: Steelers

Oakland Raiders (2-4) vs. Tennessee Titans (4-2)

Location: LP Field, Nashville, TN

The Raiders have defense.  Make no mistake about that.  They have good LBs and a solid secondary.  Other than that, there’s nothing else to smile about the Raiders as a whole.  The Raiders have the 20th ranked offense in the league and it doesn’t look like it’s going to get any better.  The only way the Raiders can win this game is to put pressure on the Titans’ QBs, no matter which one is starting.

If Kerry Collins starts, then the Raiders have a better chance of winning just by putting heavy pressure on him.  If Vince Young starts, then it all depends on how healthy he is.  If Young’s right quad is healed 85-90%, then he’ll give the Raiders’ defense head aches with his movement in the pocket.  If it’s 75-80% healed, he may be a little cautious and may not want to move around as much in fear of worsening the injury.

The Raiders also have to stop the Titans’ run game.  The Titans are the 5th ranked rushing team in the league.  They average 144 yards on the ground.  The Raiders are ranked 29th against the run.  That’s not helping the Raiders’ cause this weekend.  The Titans also have the #1 ranked defense against the run this year.  They have allowed 59.7 yards of rushing this season.  The Raiders are just above the Titans in rushing.  They’re ranked 4th in rushing yards, averaging 145.8 yards a game.

The match-up to look for is Titans’ LB Keith Bullock against the entire Raiders’ offense.  Bullock has been a man on a mission this season defensively.  Bullock has 28 tackles total.  23 of the 28 are solo tackles and he has 4 INTs.

My Pick: Titans

Cleveland Browns (3-3) vs. St. Louis Rams (0-7)

Location: Edward Jones Dome, St. Louis, MO

Like the Dolphins, the Rams need to mail in the rest of their season.  Marc Bulger came back last week in their game against the Seahawks.  He was about as useful as Stevie Wonder doing color commentary at a Lions game.  Bulger was 21 for 40 with 225 yards, no touchdowns and 3 INTs in the Rams’ loss to the Seahawks.  RB Stephen Jackson is returning for the Rams this Sunday.  Don’t expect much from him either.  The Rams’ offensive line is hurting, leaving no protection for Bulger or blocking for Jackson.

Rams DE Leonard Little is out of Sunday’s game with a torn ligament in his big toe on his left foot.  That’s just another set back for a team that had so much promise the start of the season.  Truthfully, the Rams are at a big disadvantage against the Browns this Sunday.

The Browns just have to keep doing what they have been doing for most of the season.   With a weak Rams’ defense, the Browns should be able to decimate the Rams’ secondary and put some big numbers on the board through the air.  The Browns have the 7th ranked offense in the league.  The match-up I’m looking forward to is the Browns’ passing game against the Rams’ pass defense.  The Browns’ passing offense is the 8th best in the league while the Rams’ passing defense is ranked 10th in the league.  Considering that the Browns have scored most of their points in the air, it’s going to be interesting to see how they put numbers on the board.

My Pick: Browns

NY Giants (5-2) vs. Miami Dolphins (0-7)

Location: Wembley Stadium, London, England

This Sunday is the “International Grizzly” Game as the Phins have a home game in “Jolly Ole” England against the G-men.  Phins RB Ronnie Brown is out for the year with a torn ACL and LB Zach Thomas is out of Sunday’s game due to whiplash from a car accident after last Sunday’s game.  Like the Rams, there’s really not much to say about the Phins that can help them win.

The G-men have the edge in every category possible in this game. The Giants are going into Sunday’s game with the 8th best defense in the league.  Since Week 2, their defense has been phenomenal and has been a key factor in their turn around from a 0-2 start.  You just hope that all of this travel won’t throw off the Giants’ momentum.  Thankfully for the Giants, they have their bye week in Week 9.

My Pick: Giants

Philadelphia Eagles (2-4) vs. Minnesota Vikings (2-4)

Location: Metrodome, Minneapolis, MN

The Eagles have too much fire power on offense for the Vikes.  The Vikes’ defense is ranked 26th overall while the Eagles have the 8th best offense. Brian Westbrook and Correll Buckhalter have combined for 125 carries for 680 yards and 3 TDs. Donovan McNabb has 7 TDs and 2 INTs so far this season with 1447 passing yards and he has the 15th highest QB rating with 88.4.  The Eagles have to shut down Vikes RB Adrian Peterson in order to win on Sunday.  The Eagles have the 18th ranked defense against the run while the Vikes have the #1 ranked rushing offense in the league.

All the Vikes have to do is run.  That’s it.  Don’t give RB Chester Taylor an inkling of an idea that he’ll even touch the ball this Sunday.  If Vikes Head Coach Brad Childress wants to bounce back from last Sunday’s loss to the Cowboys, let Adrian Peterson run the ball during the majority of the game.  Peterson is the leagues leading rusher.  He has 108 carries for 670 yards and 5 TDs at this point in the season.  Hopefully Eagles defensive coordinator, Jim Johnson, hasn’t lost much sleep this week trying to figure out how to stop Peterson.

My Pick: Eagles

Indianapolis Colts (5-0) vs. Carolina Panthers (4-2)

Location: Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte, NC

All season long, we have been amazed with the Patriots and the way they have entered this season like a team possessed.  My question to you is this, how did we forget to mention the defending champs?  The Colts have been quietly under the radar this year.  They have the 3rd best offense and defense in the league this year and no one is even mentioning them to repeat.  We’ve been hypnotized by New England to only think about the Pats.  It’s another one of Belichick’s devious plans.  He’s the Cobra Commander of the NFL.

This could be the game where the Colts get their first loss of the season.  Then again, it may not.  The Panthers’ defense is ranked 19th in the league and it doesn’t look like they can stop the Colts’ offense on paper.  Panthers have to put pressure on Manning.  The only problem with that is he reads defense so well, he’ll just audible to another play.  The Panthers have to try their best to disguise their coverage and do everything in their power to throw Manning off of his game.

Panthers’ QB, David Carr, practiced this week, so he’ll most likely get the start.  But if he doesn’t don’t be alarmed by the smell of Ben-Gay in the air, it’s only Vinny Testaverde.  The Panthers are going to have to really utilize RB DeAngelo Williams and WR Steve Smith.  Their going to need big numbers to compete with all of the weapons the Colts have on offense.  This will definitely be a good game to watch.

My Pick: Colts

4pm games:

Buffalo Bills (2-4) vs. NY Jets (1-6)

Location: Giants Stadium, East Rutherford, NJ

Last week I mentioned that the Jets head Coach, Eric Mangini, should consider making a switch at QB and bring in Kellen Clemens.  If Chad Pennington has a bad game this Sunday, don’t be surprised if Clemens gets the start in Week 9 against the Redskins.  Chad did sow some signs of hope in last Sunday’s loss against the Bengals, but it wasn’t enough.  Pennington was 20 for 31 with 272 yards, 3 TDs and 1 interception last week in the loss.

What’s killing the Jets is their run game.  The Jets are ranked 25th in rushing offense this year.  Thomas Jones was the man who was to replace Curtis Martin.  How is that working out for the Jets?  Jones has 131 carries for 487 yards and no touchdowns.  With numbers like that, I’d rather have Oran “Juice” Jones as my running back.

The Bills decided to stay with Trent Edwards as their starting QB and keep J.P. Losman on the bench.  That’s a good move.  He has given the Bills offense some new life and with RB Marshawn Lynch running the ball, the Bills look like a team going in the right direction in building up their offense.  If the Bills can stop Pennington from hitting his WRs for big lays, then they will pull off the season sweep.

My Pick: Bills

Houston Texans (3-4) vs. San Diego Chargers (3-3)

Location: Qualcomm Stadium, San Diego, CA

First, we want to send our prayers to the families in California that have been affected by the terrible fires this week.  Hopefully the families will be able to recover and return to their normal lives.    Because of the fires, the Chargers had practice in Arizona at the Cardinals training facility.  Qualcomm Stadium is being used as an evacuation center for people in the area for refuge from the fires.  Reports are now stating that the Chargers will be ready to go this Sunday in San Diego and the game will go on.

The Chargers have got the ball rolling, winning two games straight.  They have playing as if Martin Schottenheimer was still the head coach.  The Chargers have to continue doing what they’ve been doing for the past 2 games, have a soild mixture of run and pass and utilize LaDainian Tomlinson to the fullest.

The Texans have to attack the Chargers QB, Philip Rivers, and mess with his head.  They have to force him to make some big mistakes and capitalize on them.  They also have to attack the line of scrimmage and slow down the Chargers attack if they want to win this Sunday.

My Pick: Texans

Jacksonville Jaguars (4-1) vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-3)

Location: Raymond James Stadium, Tampa, FL

The Bucs lost a close game last week to the Titans and the Jags were shut down by the Colts last Monday night.   Both teams are hoping to bounce back.  Not only did the Jags lose the game, they lost their staring QB.  David Garrad sprained his right ankle in the Monday Night game and is now out 3-4 weeks.  Back-up QB, Quinn Gray, will be the starter.  That’s not good.  Since the Jags can’t throw the ball the way they would like to, they will have to rely on their running game to put numbers on the board.  If RBs Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew are healthy, the Bucs have a long day ahead of them in trying to stop the run.

The Bucs have to put pressure on the Jags and rattle Gray.  Since this is his first start, Gray will have everything thrown at him.  With the lack of a passing game, the Bucs can focus on the Jags ground game and shut it down.  This Bucs are the 12th ranked defense in the league while the Jags are the 13th ranked defense in the league.  Don’t look for any big numbers on the board because this is strictly a defensive game.

My Pick: Jaguars

Washington Redskins (4-2) vs. New England Patriots (7-0)

Location: Gillette Stadium, Foxboro, MA

The Pats have the #1 offense and defense in the league.  The ‘Skins have the 25th ranked offense and the 5th ranked defense in the league.  This can be a “trap” game for the Pats and they have a good chance of losing this game.  In this writer’s opinion, that ain’t gonna happen. The ‘Skins are a good team and have looked very impressive this season.  They’re just not on the same level of the Pats.

The ‘Skins need to disrupt Tom Brady and his connection to his WRs.  If the ‘Skins can use their secondary to throw off the WRs routes, it will be hard for Brady to connect for big plays and big scores in the air.  The Pats have to slow down the ‘Skins run game and have to plug up any lane the ‘Skins try to open for RB Clinton Portis.  Once again, the Pats have too much power on both sides of the ball for the ‘Skins to handle and this Sunday will be a test for the ‘Skins.

My Pick: Patriots

New Orleans Saints (2-4) vs. San Francisco 49ers (2-4)

Location: Monster Park, San Francisco, CA

Both of these teams came into this season with a lot of promise.  Then fate reared its ugly head.  The 49ers started 2-0 and then lost 4 straight.  The Saints lost 4 in a row, then turned it around and have 2 straight.  Injuries have been the death of these teams and have pulled the promise of a successful season from under their feet.

The Saints have the 20th ranked offense in the league while the 49ers have the 32nd ranked offense in the league.  This game will be interesting.  Ironically, the 49ers have the 17th ranked defense in the league while the Saints are ranked 22nd.

With QB Alex Smith returning this Sunday, the 49ers have to utilize their big 3 in Smith, RB Frank Gore and TE Vernon Davis.  The 49ers really need to use Gore and run him as much as possible against a solid Saint’s D-line.  He needs to tire that line out as the game goes on so when the opportunity arises, he can break out for a big play.  Also, the 49ers O-line has to step up and give Smith time to execute the play.  The 49ers’ lack of protection is what got Smith injured in the first place.  Make up for it in this game and give this kid protection.

Defensively, the 49ers have to stop QB Drew Brees and RB Reggie BushThe 49ers D-line has to step up and put pressure on Brees and shut down Bush as soon as the game starts.  Since the Saints WRs are weak, the secondary should be able to contribute in stopping the Saints run game.

The Saints have to continue to work Bush in the offense and allow him to go nuts.  Let him run all over the place as if he’s a little kid on a sugar rush.  On defense, the Saints should throw everything including the kitchen sink at Alex Smith and throw him off.  Since he’s returning from an injury, Smith may be a little hesitant to move around on the field hoping to prevent another injury.  The Saints need to put as much pressure on the 49ers that they possibly can and disrupt their flow.

My Pick: Saints

Sunday Night Game:

No Sunday Night Game due to the World Series

Monday Night Game:

Green Bay Packers (5-1) vs. Denver Broncos (3-3)

Location: Invesco Field, Denver, CO

The Broncos have the 2nd ranked pass defense in the league.  They showed it last Sunday night against the Steelers.  The Packers have the league’s 3rd best passing offense.  Both teams’ CBs are very good, but the Broncos have the edges with CB Champ Bailey and Dre Bly

Also, the Broncos have a run game with RB Travis Henry which will allow them to open up the field using screen plays with Henry.  The Broncos have to shut down the Packers passing game and force them to run the ball.  Since the Packers run game is not the greatest, all they can do is throw the ball.  Take that away from them, there’s nothing else left for the Packers to do.

The Packers have to try and stop Travis Henry and force QB Jay Cutler to make big mistakes.  Once the Packers can force some big mistakes from Cutler, they can then capitalize on them and put some numbers on the board.  Let’s not forget, the Packers have CBs Al Harris and Charles Woodson in their secondary and they’re not too shabby.  If the Packers can get into Cutlers’s head, they have a good chance of winning

My Pick: Broncos

Teams with Bye weeks: Atlanta Falcons (1-6), Arizona Cardinals (3-4), Baltimore Ravens (4-3), Dallas Cowboys (6-1), Kansas City Chiefs (4-3), Seattle Seahawks (4-3
