Pharrell Teams With ABC For New TV Drama ‘Limelight’

Pharrell Williams is serving as a consulting producer for Limelight, a new dramatic series to be aired on television network ABC.

Limelight follows students and teachers at a performing arts school in New York, similar to the one Williams attended while growing up in Virginia.

The series ended up on ABC after an intense bidding war between rival networks like Fox, CW and others.

“This project reminded me a lot of my own life growing up, coming from a different environment where we stuck out for having abilities that we later learned, after attending a school like this, were actually gifts and talents,” Williams told Variety. “The moral DNA for this project is that it’s OK to dream, but to bring it to fruition requires hard work.”

One of the executive producer’s of Limelight is McG, who has directed videos for Cypress Hill, Korn, Wyclef Jean, Sugar Ray, Smash Mouth.

He has also produced TV shows like Fastlane, The Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search for the Next Doll and the upcoming Untitled Matt Cirulnick/McG Project.

“Pharrell is the ultimate embodiment of credibility in this space,” McG added. “He attended a performing arts high school and went on to become the most prolific producer of our generation.”

Limelight, which is still in development with network, will face a six-figure penalty if the project does not move forward.

Pharrell Williams is a Grammy Award winning rapper/singer/producer, who has created hits for stars like Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Britney Spears, Madonna and others.

Rappers, Pioneers Featured In Doc On Famed Hip-Hop Photographer

Afrika Bambaataa, Public Enemy frontman Chuck D and rapper MC Lyte will be among those featured in a new documentary on Hip-Hop photographer Ernie Paniccioli.

The film, titled The Other Side of Hip-Hop-The Sixth Element, will chronicle Paniccioli’s life, work, art, photography and struggles through the eyes of various Hip-Hop movers and shakers.

Additionally, the 90-minute documentary will include a brief history of Hip-Hop culture as well as appearances from Afrika Bambaataa and pioneering female rapper LinQue.

The Other Side of Hip-Hop is slated to be used as a teaching tool while being screened at world wide film festivals, church and college tours.

The film is the latest achievement for Paniccioli, who has used his photography to document Hip-Hop culture since the 1970s.

In 1992, the Brooklyn native entered the world of literature with his critically acclaimed book Who Shot Ya?-Three Decades of Hip-Hop Photography.

Over the years, Paniccioli has lectured in more than 100 venues, colleges and events, including a one hour forum on C-Span 2 called “Race and Hip-Hop.”

His 2001 exhibition, “100 Shots To Tha Dome” is noted for being one of the largest one man photography shows in the history of New York City.

The Other Side of Hip-Hop-The Sixth Element hits stores in October.

Havoc: The Kush

If Havoc, the lower-key member of Mobb Deep had to choose a claim to fame as an artist it might be a challenge. Some dub him chiefly responsible for the gritty Queensbridge theme music that is his signature production style. Others tip their hat to his baritone vocals that have played lyrical double dutch with Prodigy since The Infamous days. With no Mobb Deep project to focus on, Havoc couldn’t have picked a better time for his anticipated debut. The Kush (Nature Sounds) is a potent delivery from the more obscure half of Mobb Deep.Though Havoc has produced for Jadakiss, Nas and 50 Cent, to name a few, his own album doesn’t stray far from the Mobb Deep sound. The Kush, entirely produced by the Queens native is fit for a late night ride with a car full of “dunnies” or a smooth two-step with a glass in hand. Flexing his lyrical muscles on tracks like “I’m The Boss” and “Class By Myself” Havoc lives up to the titles with self-assured claims. Prodigy drops a verse on “Set Me Free” while Nitti, Un Pachino, NYCE and 40 Glocc blend well with the album’s get-money groove. The slow-rolling “Be There” with a looping Michael Jackson sample amplifies the paranoia that surrounds the lap of luxury. “Them shots fly tell me will you be there… / The money gone tell me will you be there.” The cosmic “What’s Poppin Tonite” is the just got paid it’s Friday night track inspired by popping bottles and models. Havoc’s intimidating “One Less N####” could have been plucked from any Mobb Deep album with a piercing synthesizer reinforcing his threats.Havoc doesn’t disappoint with his hard-hitting lyrics and rugged complementary tracks; long the staple for the duo. But there are few that disappoint. There is no crescendo in the predictable loops on “Balling Out” and the lackluster “Ride Out.” Hollywood Hav does branch out to pan the spotlight on his smart lyrics and his own introspective persona.  On The Kush, Havoc tells the midnight-hour streetwise anthems from his own perspective. If he continues to up the ante on the rhymes and the production, Havoc will truly be in a class by himself. SOUNDCHECK:Havoc “One Less Ni**a”Havoc f/ Nitti “Class By Myself”

Hip-Hop Rumors: Jay-Z Album Cover? Diddy Sells? Superhead Gets Mad and Happy?

THE LOX AND DEF JAM?

From what I heard, The Lox are now officially on Def Jam and they have completed an album. The rumor is, Sheek, Styles and Jadakiss have turned the album in to the appropriate people to give the go ahead. From what I heard, the album won’t becoming out anytime soon, for a variety of reasons. What I did hear is that Def Jam gave The Lox 100% creative control over the album. We’ll see.

DIDDY CLOSES JUSTIN’S????

AW man! I didn’t go there that much, but when I did, I liked the food! I heard that Diddy shut down Justin’s in New York! Now, I don’t know if this closure is final, but there is some hope. Rumor has it, Diddy is just going to move the place into a bigger, better location in Manhattan. Where that is, nobody knows. Private events will continue to go on, but nothing is open to the hungry public.

SUPERH- KARRINE GETS MAD!

Karrine “Superhead” Steffans doesn’t like to be called Superhead. Check her out right here correcting somebody on that. They really go at it over there at WJLB in Detroit. Also, click here if you want to hear her gush over Lil’ Wayne. She was happy in this interview. SMH. (PAUSE!)

UH-OH – DID DJ KHALED GET CONFRONTED?

This was sent to me. I didn’t make it up! Just passing along the message!

On Monday night September 26, 2007 at Diamonds Caberet in Miami DJ Khaled gets smacked in the head by Coolie, a member of Southside Bombers who is also labelmate with up and coming Miami rapper Hennessi. The event at Diamonds was Trick Daddy & Young Jeezy birthday party. Khaled walks into strip club with no problems. Then the club wouldn’t allow Coolie in, so he tells someone to call Khaled to come outside and get him in. Khaled ignores the request when put on the phone with Coolie. When Fat Joe arrives to get in the club, Coolie, who is cool with Fat Joe, walks in the club with Fat Joe’s crew. As soon as they enter, Coolie goes straight to Khaled and smacks him in the head and starts pointing the finger in his head. Asking him what his problem is? Why he acting shady? This just heats up tension because Khaled already doesn’t play any Hennessi music on the radio. They say that they’re going to revoke Khaled’s G pass. Hennessi was featured on Khaled’s first album on ‘Future of Dade County’. He is already working on a diss record to Khaled. He will also be featured on the new Cam’ron Mixtape that will be dropping soon.

The most important part of this is that Cam’ron’s mixtape is getting verified! A smack upside the head is comedy, but I can say I hope this doesn’t get crazy. Khaled is still the beeeeesssst in Miami.

SIGNS THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END

This is Nailah Franklin. Have you seen her? If you have, you could do some good possibly win $10,000 in reward money. This is all happening in the Chicago area so keep your eyes and hears peeled. This is going to sound corny and superficial, but she’s cute so bring her back home safe! It hasn’t been that long, but you know that the media is never going to do anything of substance for her anyway. For more information, hit up:

THE GAME READY TO COME BACK OUT?

I wonder what The Game has in store for his next CD. He’s kind of followed a similar path as 50 Cent for his last two CD’s. So, how are we going to gravitate to him this time? Anyway, he’s reportedly in the studio and making joints for this next CD. Didn’t he say he was going to retire after this one?

WHERE’S CAM’RON CONTINUES…

The picture of Cam’ron at McDonald’s isn’t recent. That damn thing is old so the search for Cam’ron continues! See below for a statement of the dude that started the whole mess. (This is unedited in the purest form – I didn’t touch it.)

THAT PHOTO OF CAMERON IS NOT RECENT I POSTED IT AS A JOKE ON A WUTANG SITE N SAID THE GUY IN THE PHOTO WAS TRU LIFE BECUZ I AM A BIG CAM FAN N I WAS TRYING TO MAKE IT LOOK LIKE HE REBOUNDED FROM JIM JONES SIGNING TO G UNIT. YUNG JOC’S CHAIN INTACT

My boy Lyles hit me up and said that Yung Joc is fully exonerated from the rumor that his chain got stolen in London. He said that last Saturday at Studio 72 (JD’s club in ATL) Joc was there along with the big ass chain. He said that Joc was there with many other celebrity guess like Keyhia Cole, Usher, Carmelo Anthony, Allen Iverson, Jazzy Pha, JE, and others. He said he was standing right next to Loc ‘til the rapper went into the Jacuzzi room. Other people told me they saw Yung Joc with that chain and that’s a good thing. He was teaching kids about the letter “H” with that big sucker.

MF DOOM – IS DEAD?

MF Doom sure isn’t dead, but that’s not going to stop him from having a bit of fun with it. Below you will see a statement issued by his label Stones Thrown.

Doom Responds to Rumors

Every day for the past month we’ve been hit up by people wanting explanations, statements, clarifications, and declarations about MF DOOM. Is he lip synching? (No. Listen to the videos on Youtube.) Is he an impostor? (No, but he did lose some pounds.) Is he in the hospital? (No, he’s in his studio … or if not there, you can find him in the pub with the grub stain.)

Reached earlier this morning at his home in Georgia, an alive and well MF DOOM issued this statement: “What up? I’m dead.”

At least he has a sense of humor about the situation. Shout out to Jorge.

CHINGO BLING HAS GRADUATION HIS WAY

Chingo Bling is a dude that I never heard, but hear about all the time. This rumor is no different. I heard that Mr. Bling is now going to be speaking at EMCC’s Center for Teaching and learning. If I am correct this is Estrella Mountain Community College in Arizona. What I was able to find out is that Chingo Bling is a college graduate and has a BA in business administration and is even in a business fraternity. How cool is that? Anyway, he’ll be talking about Hispanic heritage, entrepreneurship, the importance of a university degree, and other things.

ILLSEED QUICKIESYoung Miles is ALIVE – rumor is dead!

Sad news. I heard a young, upcoming rapper named Young Miles has been murdered. I heard he recorded dis songs to the people that murdered Proof and Murda Mook. Hope its not true.

I heard that Pap, Kay Slay and family got that $1.5 million! They didn’t have to give it back.

More trouble for the Vickster. Michael Vick has tested positive for marijuana, according to reports. That chronic is something else, huh?

NEW PEEDI PEEDI!

The song is “Fall Back”…the boy is bad, the boy is bad! Def Jam has more careers on hold than the glass ceiling!

Is this the cover of Jay-Z’s new album? The rumor mill says so.

NEW DE LA HOYA PICS ARE OUT THERE

Look, I am not going to say whether or not these Oscar De La Hoya pictures are real or not, but somebody is a helluva Photoshop master. Whoever did this should really open up Photoshop University. He’d get cake!

Here are some of the new images that somebody doctored to make it look like De La Hoya is a cross dressing boxer.

ILL PICS

My boy Brandon hit me up with this pic of his friend from Dayton, OH. His boy got a picture of him and Dave Chappelle at the airport. He’s lucky. Dave’s not always up for the picture action.

My girl Margaret sent me this pic of Jade from America’s Next Top Model on the train in New York.

Fonzworth Bentley just released a book called “Advance Your Swagger.” Cop that, heathen!

There are a lot of pics of J-Hud on the set of Sex in the City. This is my favorite.

Key Key is glammed out! She is expected to top the charts next week and push over 300k in her first week.

To Kanye’s fiancee: WATCH YOUR BACK! I will watch Kim K’s back!

TOMORROW, WE LOVE YOU!

They keep us talking, but if we stop talking about them then they should worry!

Finding Forever Tour: The Kool Haus, Toronto—9.24.2007

A quick glance at the massive crowd and lines outside of the Kool Haus on Monday night (Sept 24, 2007) were a good indication that the stock of Chi-City’s illest MC has clearly risen since the last time he touched down in the T-Dot, back in February 2006 at this very same (albeit less crowded) venue along Toronto’s waterfront. Common, who was in town for a stop on his current tour to support his latest release Finding Forever brought along some lively opening acts in the form of Stones Throw artist and legendary underground lyricist Percee P and Q-Tip, whom some might remember from a little group called A Tribe Called Quest. Unfortunately, due to the lack  of complete organization and a proper lineup system courtesy of The Kool Haus security  staff (this is a persistent problem at this venue,  and will continue to be until someone in charge gets their act together!), many concert-goers (including myself) were trapped outside steaming, listening to the muffled sounds of each artists’ opening sets.Once inside you were immediately hit with a stifling wall of heat and humidity created by the combination of poor ventilation and the thousands of hipsters, b-boys and  girls, thugs and middle-aged couples eagerly anticipating the return of Kanye West’s favorite rapper.  The lights dimmed and the screaming began as vocal snippets off Finding Forever played over the sound system. Common bolted onto the stage dressed to impress in a white tee, expensive-looking denim and one of his trademark hats; and immediately had the floor bouncing with “Go” from 2005’s instant classic Be and his current heater, “The People”. A welcome addition to Common’s performance was the inclusion of live drummer Karriem Riggins, a producer/musician/power player who is known from his close association with the Stones Throw family); which added some sonic muscle to Common’s already dope live show.  Common kept the energy of the crowd up as he played a little call-and-response with the sweaty party people in attendance during crowd favorites like “The Corner” off his last album. The floor shook when Common unleashed a classic throwback collage in which he spit Toronto-centric rhymes (Shouting out street names, landmarks, etc.) over classic beats like “Just A Friend” by Biz Markie and Nas’ “N.Y. State of Mind”.  Those fans who weren’t at his last show in Toronto, wouldn’t realize that Common pulled the same trick the last time around and it wasn’t something new; however it worked like a charm nonetheless. The energy in the building waned slightly during “Testify” during which Common left the stage to change clothes and cut the music to deliver a spoken word portion of the track to create drama; however all it did was cause the crowd to stir restlessly and complain until the beat kicked back in. The unbearable heat was surely a factor, as several people were carried out unconscious by security; but the “mini-stage production” seemed to miss it’s intended target.Common closed off his set with a stirring rendition of one of his all-time greatest tracks “The Light” which was produced by the late production prodigy J Dilla, whom was shown love by all inside the cramped Kool Haus. He then stated that, “I always close the show with The Light and typically don’t do any more songs….however because y’all been so good, I’ll do a couple more!”  The crowd roared its approval as Common bounced through the Kanye-assisted “The Food” and “I Want You” off Finding Forever. All in all, Chicago’s finest delivered yet another memorable performance filled with everything you would expect from Common and maybe a little you wouldn’t. Hopefully next time Toronto is graced with Common’s fine mic presence it will be at a venue that that offers some relief from the heat being produced on stage and amongst the fans.

Shape Up: Seasons Change

Hey what’s good everybody?  This is Darrell Butler, your new AHH Fitness specialist.  Just to give you a little background, I’m a certified personal trainer and strength coach with the American Council on Exercise (ACE).  I’m also the founder of Industrial Strength & Performance (I.S.P Fitness) and have trained at facilities throughout the nation. A funny thing seems to happen each year at my gym as the weather starts getting warmer, right around the beginning of April.

The “Oh snap!” alarm seems to suddenly go off in everyone’s head as they realize that they can’t hide behind hoodies and bubble jackets for much longer. The gym becomes packed with all these fresh new faces pressing weight, burning up the treadmill and banging out crunches like there’s no tomorrow. All in hopes of securing that perfect beach body just in time for the summer – and I’m happy to say that many of them actually pull it off!  But then, just like a summer love, they eventually fade away by the end of August. They go from “gym rats” to “gym grizzly bears” as they go into hibernation for the winter.

You know, as a certified trainer, there’s nothing more rewarding than seeing someone reach his or her fitness goals. On the flipside, it’s just as sad seeing all of that progress fade away.  Despite the prevailing misconception that leads many to believe otherwise, I’m here to tell you that you can keep that summer body all year long; and it’s not as hard as you might think. I mean, just because the weather is getting colder doesn’t mean you have to completely stop caring about your body. Your jacket is meant to have extra layers and pockets….not your stomach.

Now, before we can change this behavior of losing ground during the winter, we should first address some of the most common reasons for why it happens. The most obvious would be the change in temperature itself.

If you live in Dirty Jerz like I do, or in another state that has all four seasons, it’s about to get cold out there…really cold.  For most people, that usually puts an end to long walks in the park or leisurely bicycle and skateboard rides.  Softball leagues come to an end, tennis courts and golf courses close and community swimming pools are shut down.  It practically becomes a chore just to leave the house – so many don’t unless it’s absolutely necessary.

Let’s face it, people are naturally more active in the summer and are likely to spend extra time walking outside instead of driving everywhere.  As a result, it’s easier to get away with the occasional barbeque or ice cream cone.  With all of the additional calories burned during the typical summer day, slip-ups like this have much less of an impact than they would during a lazy winter day spent indoors.  However for most people, junk foods become more than just an occasional slip-up during the winter.  Combine that with a decrease in physical activity and you have a recipe for disaster.

It’s a simple formula actually, if you consume more calories than you burn off each day, you’re going to gain weight.  Unfortunately, the way the US calendar of events is laid out at the end of the year, it’s easy to fall into that trap if you’re not paying attention.

Lets take a look at the chronological descent most people take during their transformation from two-piece to super-sized at the end of the year.

Labor Day – “Time to finish the summer strong with one last bbq – where did I put that bottle opener?”

School/Work Begins – “Damn, this ish again?  Where did I put that bottle opener?”

Football Season Begins – “Wings, chips, pizza, beer…welcome to the good life.”

Fall TV Season Begins – “Head to the gym or chill on the couch with the remote and a bag of Doritos – Deal or No Deal?”

Halloween (also my birthday, holla at cha boy!) – You know how we do people – telling your kids that you have to “check the candy” for them and then you eat all the good ish out of the bag and leave them with a bunch of pennies and candy corn.  Or you only buy candy to pass out that you want to eat then start playing “one for you….one for me” with the chocolate by the end of the night.

Turkey day/Christmas/Holidays – Between shopping, traveling and all of that food, thoughts about the gym usually hit the backburner by this point…if they hadn’t already.  Pass the gravy…

New Years – “Oh well, I’ll start off fresh next year….”

But you see, it doesn’t have to be like this.  Sure you can’t do as much outside during the winter, but if you enjoyed playing basketball, racquetball or swimming outside, check out a local facility that has these activities indoors.  Many are free or offer discount membership programs.

Is cold weather your thing?  Try skiing, ice skating, snowboarding or maybe even shoveling your own driveway instead of hustling your neighbors kid into doing it for 20 bucks this year.

Busy at school or work?  Try taking the stairs in your building instead of the elevator or bring your own lunch to avoid ordering out each day.

Is the game or a hot new show coming on?  Workout before it starts or alternate between doing push-ups and sit-ups during commercial breaks. Most gyms also have tv screens with headphone jacks, or invest in a digital video recorder and watch your shows whenever you want to.

As for the holidays, it’s no secret that they’re coming so start planning around them now. By no means would I want you to miss out on all that stuffing and mashed potatoes, my point is that if you’re consistently working out on a regular basis you can do anything in moderation. If staying healthy or looking good for your spouse or significant other isn’t enough motivation (that reminds me, spouses can help provide another fun “indoor workout” during those cold winter months), I’d like for you to give yourself a realistic goal or event to work towards.

People seem to make so much progress during the spring because they know the summer beach season is right around the corner.  We need that type of incentive during those long winter months as well.  Think about how much easier it would be to look good for the summer if you were consistent throughout the whole year instead of just for a few months?

Try planning a vacation during the winter to a warmer location to keep you motivated.  Or maybe you could partner up with friends to keep each other focused.  You can also keep summer photos in plain sight to serve as a reminder or start buying your winter clothes a size too small!

Whatever you end up doing, one thing is certain, you will not be slacking off this time around; because I’m here now to provide that proverbial kick in the ass.  Whether your goal is to lose more weight or build and shape muscle, we’re going to begin that journey right now.  It’s time for some action!

In the upcoming editions of this column, you can expect to see workout plans, nutritional advice and motivational interviews. Also feel free to share your accomplishments and questions with us as well.  Whether you’re an elite athlete or just starting off, we’re going to take you to the next level this year.  In the meantime, be sure to check out the valuable information already posted at www.isperformance.com

Trina’s Single Stolen From Studio; Slip N Slide CEO Reacts

Miami rapper Trina and her label Slip N Slide Records have revealed that her first single “Single Again” which features Christina Milian was stolen from a local recording studio and leaked via the email and the Internet.

According to Slip N Slide CEO Ted Lucas, the illegal, stolen version is the wrong track.

“This mishap is extremely unfortunate and the official version of ‘Single Again’ track featuring Trina by herself will be re-released by the end of the week,” Lucas told AllHipHop.com. “I am thankful that nothing else was taken from the computer. I guess we can look at this bizarre experience and move forward with Trina’s upcoming project.”

According to representatives for Trina, the rapper was “in complete shock” when she realized the single had been stolen.

“Single Again” is taken from Trina’s upcoming album Da Baddest Chick Part 2: Reloaded, which features guest appearances by Missy Elliott, Gwen Stefani and others.

Blacks Are People Too Bill

Usually I ignore Bill O’Reilly. The man has absolutely no integrity or shame; and, like Rush Limbaugh, makes his money by appealing to the worse elements of Human nature. But I had to take pause at his comments about dining at Sylvia’s with Al Sharpton recently when he said:

“There wasn’t one person in Sylvia’s who was screaming, ‘M-Fer, I want more iced tea.’ You know, I mean, everybody was — it was like going into an Italian restaurant in an all-white suburb in the sense of people were sitting there, and they were ordering and having fun. And there wasn’t any kind of craziness at all.”

Gee, thanks Boss, er, I mean Bill—glad to see that we fit your idea of civilization.

While his quotes mistake his conscious ignorance of African-American society it’s worth looking a moment at how he conveys his views on race in America; because, for the most part, it’s the way that the white mainstream press also looks at African-Americans. Eric Duggans over at Huffpo seems to be right on the money when he says:

“I think these comments are typical of O’Reilly’s technique. Too smart to personally use an epithet in the way Don Imus finally did, he instead turns rap culture into a straw man used to represent all or most of black America. Then, he’s free to tee off on the stereotypical excesses of THAT culture, rather than talk about real, live black people with all their contradictions intact.”

And O’Reilly isn’t the only one. On September 25, Hip-Hop went to Capital Hill to discuss lyrics in Hip-Hop music—a defacto defense of “degratory” language used by some of its artists. Now I’m not going to talk about what occurred in that conference because, overall, it doesn’t matter. Hip-Hop and the country has been bambozzled by the O’Reilly media into falling into their trap, eagerly accepting that ‘Straw Man” status that Duggan descibes. By stepping underneath the Congressional spotlight, these Hip-Hop artists and moguls have accepted two things, which they may or may not want to accept. The first is that their lyrics are representative of African-Americans, and second, that their lyrics are something to be ashamed of, and need defending. When Hip-Hop artists are thrown into that position, the white establishment is happy because not only does Hip-Hop become a part of that establishment (much like how anyone who is arrested becomes part of the system), but it becomes a tool of the establishment through their defensive stance. Don’t get tricked, this is all distraction. It’s a trap. While Bill O’Reilly suddenly discovers that black people eat with knives and forks and that makes news, and while David Banner and Master P debate the N-word on capitol hill at the tax payers expense (oh yes, you pay for this in congressional salaries) a war goes on, racism continues, people die for lack of health care, and homelessness rises. But hey, at least little white boys won’t be calling each other ‘n####’.

If you ask me the best thing Hip-Hop could have done was stood outside of Congress and, as one, gave the huge white buildling the middle finger, and then hit the lab. After all, what could possibly happen? Is Congress going to ban Hip-Hop? The music we love and their associated businesses, are a multi-million, if not a billion, dollar a year industry. Do you think Congress is going to shut that down? Even if they wanted to, they couldn’t because ultimately the establishment will kowtow to their prophet Adam Smith and their God of Capitalism. That’s why America will always have drugs and pornography. If it makes money people might talk s### about it, might abhor it, and maybe even make it illegal, but a demand will always breed a supply. Instead of bowing to the system, Hip-Hop needs to remember that it’s at its best when it remains daring, audacious, and always out of the box.

Jena 6 Rally sparks new spirit of protesting

“If they were Jewish students who sat under the tree and the following day had swastikas or offensive racial imagery hung from those trees, and they decided to respond to that imagery with their fists, they wouldn’t have charges placed against them in this country or any other country, for that matter,” rapper Mos Def retorted to CNN reporters during a live broadcast from Jena, Louisiana last Thursday.

Jena, with a population of 3,000, was flooded with a reported 50,000 people from across the country, primarily African American, demanding justice for six Black high school students known as the “Jena 6.”

Since last fall, racial tensions between Black and White students at Jena High School have been brewing with a series of events in the small town whose population is 85 percent White.

Among them was a Black student sitting under what was considered the “White tree.” The next day, some White students responded by hanging nooses from it. Black students protested and District Attorney Reed Walters, along with police officers, ended the protest and told the Black students, “I can take away your lives with a stroke of my pen.”

Soon after, White students at a party beat a Black student and, the next day, a group of Black students were arrested for theft of a gun when they wrestled and obtained a shotgun from a White man after he pulled it out and threatened them with it at a local store. No charges were filed against the White man.

Everything climaxed when an outspoken White student who supported the noose prank called a group of Black students “n#####.” The Black students retaliated by attacking him. The White student suffered minor injuries and later attended a party that evening.

Six Black students were arrested and charged with second-degree murder for the school fight. An all-White jury convicted 17-year-old Mychal Bell of aggravated battery. He has been in jail since December.(Story continued below image)

The case has drawn national attention and sparked a heated debate about race relations in the U.S. Some believe that because of the outcry of injustice heard throughout the country, Bell’s conviction for second-degree battery was thrown out earlier this month, with a judge saying it should’ve been handled in juvenile court. Charges for four other students were reduced to battery and conspiracy. One student, Bryant Purvis, who claims he was a spectator of the fight, and an unidentified student, are charged with attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

Revs. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton and their constituents, along with busloads of college students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU), concerned families and high-profiled personalities like Martin Luther King III, filmmaker Tyler Perry, rapper/actor Mos Def, author Michael Baisden, Hip-Hop writer and activist Kevin Powell and Congresswoman Maxine Waters, responded to what many deem inhumane treatment of children by swarming in on the autonomous town donned in Black and carrying picket signs while shouting, “No justice, no peace!”

It was a scene out of the civil rights demonstrations. Red-faced sheriffs aligned the outskirts of the massive crowd with their hands resting lightly on the holsters awaiting trouble. It never came.

Jackson led a passionately peaceful three-block march to the LaSalle Parish Courthouse where he told participants that injustice like the Jena 6 case is taking place in every state. With Blacks accounting for 80 percent of children in juvenile detention, the civil rights leader alluded to the business of imprisonment.

“They use inmates as prison workers. They are cutting grass along the highway. They rent prisoners out to friends in private business… It’s called pillage or slave labor.”

D.A. Walters, who held a press conference Wednesday, and some local residents, mainly White, believe the attention on the case is blown out of proportion and that their town is being misrepresented.

“This case has been portrayed by the news media as being about race,” said Walters. “The fact that it takes place in a small Southern town lends itself to that portrayal, but this is not, and never has been, about race. It is about finding justice for an innocent victim, and holding people accountable for their actions.”

“This is a very close community. I feel safe here. I think this is a good community,” said one woman, convinced that “outsiders” should stay out of it.

But Sharpton believes silence is a catalyst to injustice.

“The silence shows us that this was fine as long as it was under the carpet. We came to pull the carpet up. If there are roaches [when] we turn the light on, don’t blame us for being those that get rid of roaches. Blame those that let the roaches crawl around.”

Melissa Bell, the mother of Mychal Bell, marched alongside Sharpton wearing a “Jena 6” T-shirt. She said her son was watching the rally on the news and was overwhelmed by the support from strangers across the nation.

Unfortunately, their excitement was cut short the next day when a judge denied a motion for Bell’s release from jail even though his charges have been voided. As of yet, D.A. Walters hasn’t re-filed charges in juvenile court, so according to Bell’s attorneys, there is no reason to hold him. Protestors from the rally who were present at the court hearing vowed to come back.

Donald Washington, U.S. attorney for the Western District of Louisiana, concluded that the nooses and the school beating of the White student were not related incidents and dismissed any notion that the events are hate crimes.

ColorofChange.org, an Internet-based grassroots organization, lists several steps Jena 6 supporters can take to help the high school students.

“The prosecutor and district attorney should be made to know that the responsible thing to do is the right thing to do,” said Mos Def. “These are young men. There’s no justification in ruining their lives over something that’s so ridiculous.”

THE LATEST NEWS

A White supremacist website posted the phone numbers and addresses of five of the six Black students, calling for their community to “deliver justice,” the FBI reported Saturday.

Some of the families have received constant threats 24/7 and the governor has called for an investigation by local police.

“These people need more than an investigation. They need protection,” Rev. Jesse Jackson said Sunday. He is now calling for President Bush to intervene.

Marc Ecko Announces Baseball’s Fate, Bonds Calls Ecko An ‘Idiot’

Hip-Hop clothing mogul Marc Ecko has announced the fate of Barry Bonds’ home run ball, but not without criticism from the San Francisco Giants’ slugger.

Last week, Ecko announced that he was the anonymous bidder who won the bill during a September 15 auction, at a price tag of $752,000.

Ecko announced that he set up a website which allowed the public to vote on the fate of the historic ball.

Fans who visited www.vote756.com had three choices: (a) Bestow it intact to Cooperstown, (b) Permanently brand the ball with an asterisk before sending it to Cooperstown, or (c) launch it into space.

Over 10 million fans voted for option (b), to permanently brand the ball with an asterisk before sending it to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.

“The fans have spoken and the asterisk will forever be part of the history of this ball,” Ecko said. “It is a reflection of fans’ sentiments and will be preserved by the Hall of Fame in this manner. We are gratified to have the Hall of Fame’s support in this effort.”

Bonds, however, its not so thrilled.

“He’s stupid [Marc Ecko]. He’s an idiot,” Bonds told The San Francisco Chronicle. “He spent $750,000 on the ball and that’s what he’s doing with it? What he’s doing is stupid.”

Dale Petroskey, president of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, thanked Ecko for donating the ball, which is one of 35,000 relics voluntarily given to the museum.

“The asterisk represents the voice of the fans at this moment in time,” Petroskey said. “The level of interest reflects the strong bond between baseball and American culture. Our responsibility as a history museum is to present every story in proper context, and this ball allows us to do that.”

Gilbert Arenas: Agent Zero

Every good player needs a dope nickname. Therefore, Washington Wizard’s guard Gilbert Arenas is set with his Agent Zero moniker. His exploits on the b-ball court wreaked havoc on NBA defenses enough to earn him All-NBA Second Team honors for the ‘06/07 season and off the court his charity (he donates money for every point he scores to DC public schools through his Scores for Schools Program) and marketability is in full swing with endorsements from Adidas and the cover of EA’s NBA Live ’08 videogame on his resume.Arenas was in NYC promoting his latest sneaker, the GIL II ZERO. It was the first time he had seen some of them since Adidas is being tight with revealing the designs (“They’re afraid to show me cause I leak them,” laughed Arenas). The sneak peak revealed them to be surefire collectors items so check back on AllHipHop.com for each shoe as they’re revealed throughout the season (Arenas will wear certain shoes and is already set to accept the fines for the shoes not meeting the NBA’s uniform guidelines). The series will feature 20, exclusive limited edition takes on the design which include collaborations from the likes of Coca-Cola, Benihanas [Hibachi!], SLAM Magazine and even Looney Tunes Tweety Bird that are gleamed from Arenas’ style, tastes and personality. Arenas caught up with AllHipHop to discuss his shoe game. AllHipHop.com: Did you have to lobby to get your own shoe and now with 20 exclusive shoes in the wings, is this is your way of getting back at Adidas?Gilbert Arenas: Yeah, I been waiting for my own shoe from Adidas for a long time now. We’d been going back and forth. That day has come, it came last year and I was so excited about having my first shoe. I really wanted my second shoe to be different and special. That’s why we came up with the concept of 20 different ones, so everyone has a life of it’s own. AllHipHop.com: You mentioned on your blog a while ago the back and forth when it came to the design, is that were the idea of 20 varieties came from? Gilbert Arenas: No, the twenty designs came out after we figured out how the show was gonna look. The first shoe, it was going to be 82 colors, for every different game. Every different game was going to be a different shoe. But the problem with that concept was the shoe was terrible. Once I killed that notion I came up with this new one. AllHipHop.com: Surely you spent a good part of the summer rehabbing your knee, is there anything you’ve been able to add to your game?Gilbert Arenas: Right now I’m actually doing that. I’m adding a mid-range [game]. Ya know, I’ll sit there and work on moves, like I was working on my regular shot, just getting my mechanics back. I’m a much better shooter that I was last year. Then I started working on back to the basket fadeaways. Then I realized, I’m 6’ 3”…anyone can block this shot [laughing]. I’m sitting there after 500 makes of a turnaround jumpshot, I told the trainer, Hey why don’t you come and try to block that shot? And I shoot it…[blocked]. I don’t know why I just worked on two hours of this when it’s the same thing someone else is going to do. So right now I’m just working on screen and rolls coming off mid-range.AllHipHop.com: You’ve documented your love hate relationship with trainers, have they ever give you grief over wearing lo-tops?Gilbert Arenas: Umm, I remember in college where it was mandatory that we had to wear hi-top shoes, we had to wear tape—I hated both. So I used to cut the bottom of the tape off, the whole foot part, it just had this part [points to ankle] that showed the socks so it looked like I had the tape on [chuckling]. With the shoes, I was just like, Coach if I wear the tape can I wear my low tops cause I’m more comfortable in low tops. He was like, Alright I guess. My whole thing was don’t get an ankle injury because if they see I don’t have the tape on…AllHipHop.com: You don’t wear tape [on your ankles] to this day?Gilbert Arenas: I can’t wear them. It restricts…you don’t wear tape while walking, why would I wear tape playing basketball? AllHipHop.com: Do you have an all time favorite shoe?Gilbert Arenas: Umm…I’d have to say Penny Hardaway’s. That shoe he came out with, the first ones. That and the patent leather Air Jordans.AllHipHop.com: Didn’t you wear those Penny’s at Arizona?Gilbert Arenas: Those were the Foamposites, the second shoe. The all blue ones. I tried to actually wear them again when I got to Arizona but…AllHipHop.com: You were underrated coming out of high school going to Arizona…Gilbert Arenas: I don’t know how. I averaged 38 points (laughing)…AllHipHop.com: But then you left after sophomore year in college to enter the draft. When did it click in your mind that you could play in the league?Gilbert Arenas: I remember it was…I don’t remember the date, I don’t know why I don’t remember the date…but my college coach sent me the highlight tape, cause I always make highlight tapes. He sent me a highlight tape that I actually had done with the music and stuff and I left it in college. It was a highlight tape of my first two years and he was like, This might help you out. I put it in and you’re just watching yourself…and I’m seeing me do moves and I’m like…it’s basketball. This is what I do. How can I not play on this level? So I got to practice and I’m like you know, I’ma just focus. I’ma just focus, for two weeks play as hard as I can, go out there and just do everything. Wake up six in the morning, just get my body right, get my mind back to being sharp cause at the time I don’t…if you had put me out there…Like I’m glad they didn’t have the D-League then (laughing). Two weeks straight I guess the coach could see this. I’ve never gave respect to this coach but Brian Winters was a coach who actually put me on the floor and felt that I was a better player than Larry Hughes at the time and actually gave me the opportunity to play. I guess he [saw] something in me that I wasn’t seeing or they weren’t seeing when I first came. All they seen was the goofy kid who just loves to laugh. Then I said I’m not going to laugh anymore. I’ma put all this frustration and energy into basketball. And then I did and then I got to play and I said this is what got me on, this is what’s going to keep me on. And then I started reading the paper, He’s a hothead. He has a bad attitude. I’m like…[laughing]I’m at the point where I can focus and still be who I am. That’s when I got back to the funny kid who just loves to joke. AllHipHop.com: Kanye “battled” 50 Cent, whose shoe do you want to battle?Gilbert Arenas: I called it out. I want to see who takes the challenge. If it’s D Wade, LeBron or Carmelo. Or Kobe, hey. I have no problem challenging you guys. AllHipHop.com: Had to feel good dropping 60 points on Kobe.Gilbert Arenas: Ya know I’m a Laker fan, I’m a Kobe fan. All my friends, we’re diehard Laker fans. You can’t tell us nothing wrong about Kobe and the Lakers. So when it happened, all my friends is there—I got like a hundred tickets. So they’re p##### off. One, the Lakers lost. Two I outscored Kobe (laughing). Before the game it’s like, Kobe’s going to give you the business today. Uh huh, why don’t you stick Kobe? And that’s the whole argument, it’s me against all my friends because I gotta defend myself now.

Pitbull Returns From USO Tour; Thanks American Troops

Miami rapper Pitbull recently completed a tour of Korea and Okinawa, where he performed for American troops as part of his first United Service Organization (USO) tour.

Pitbull joins rappers like Paul Wall, Coolio and Sean P. (of The YoungBloodZ) who have performed for American troops on USO tours through Iraq, Korea, Kuwait, Bosnia and other cities affected by war.

“Performing for the troops and their families on this USO tour was nothing short of amazing,” Pitbull said. “The troops over there are so full of energy and love. I am genuinely thankful for everything they are doing for us back home and am truly honored to have performed for them.”

The USO is a non-profit organization that has been in operation for over 66 years, providing morale, welfare and recreational services to U.S. military personnel and their families.
