DJ Star’s Mom Files $11 Million Lawsuit Against Emmis Radio

Hannah Hightower,

mother of controversial radio personality DJ Star, has filed an $11 million lawsuit

against Emmis Radio for disparaging comments Hot 97 disc jockey Miss Jones made

about her. The federal lawsuit contends that Miss Jones defamed Hightower

during an on-air rant in which Jones described her as a "a prostitute."

The complaint, filed on Wednesday (August 2) in a Manhattan court, also quotes

the disc jockey as saying, "Your white mom was nothing but a prostitute that

your dad turned out," and "got knocked up by the blackest, blackest,

blackest n – – – – r." The lawsuit is the latest round in a flurry

of legal maneuvering that has resulted from Star being fired from New York radio

station Power 105.1 after making racial and sexual remarks about DJ Envy’s wife

Gia Casey and their 4-year-old daughter.Star

(real name Troi Torain) was later arrested and charged with harassment and endangering

the welfare of a child. Last

month, Star struck a deal with the city’s District Attorney’s office to have the

charges dropped after agreeing to stay away from Envy’s daughter, as well

as, perform three days community service. In related news, Star is also

facing a multi-million dollar lawsuit that was filed by former co-host Prozac

Girl, who alleges that the shock jock caused her intentional emotional distress

and fired her in violation of the Americans with Disability Act.

Young Buck & Lloyd Banks: Live at the BBQ

F

rom Fresh Prince’s “Summertime,” to Dre and Snoop’s “Nuttin’ But a G Thang,” Hip-Hop has expressed itself quite well at a barbeque. Even today, in an era that is fueled by beef, there’s still plenty of room for chicken, shrimp, and baked beans too – just ask G-Unit’s Lloyd Banks and Young Buck.

As Young Buck will have you begging for recipes, Lloyd Banks says that he may sneak in some family cooking to Saturday’s barbeque so as not to get sick before Friday’s concert. G-Unit is known for their workaholic ways, but see how two of Hip-Hop’s biggest stars kick it when they get a chance. But if you think you’re gonna either rapper off his guard on the Playstation, think again. AllHipHop.com gets live at the barbeque with G-Unit.

AllHipHop.com: You’ve got the AllHipHop.com/G-Unit Barbeque coming up this weekend. Are you with the games or the BBQ?

Lloyd Banks: I’m definitely going to be at the barbeque – as well as everybody else who’s in town. I don’t want to throw any names, because the scheduling is crazy. I am definitely looking forward to it … going to do my thing, so the bottom line is I’ve been waiting for this for a while and I’m looking forward to the show [on Friday].

AllHipHop.com: Lots of people have strong opinions of what music is acceptable at a barebeque. What do you like listening to?

Lloyd Banks: Well, of course, my music. I came up on all kind of music, from Biggie to ‘Pac, Queens’ artists. I wanna hear my music, this is G-Unit Barbeque and we got about nine to ten people on the roster, so you can expect to hear that. No joke.

Young Buck: In the South, we f**k with a lot of Scarface, a lot of UGK, a lot of Young Jeezy. Then we switch over to the Snoop Dogg and the Ice Cube. You know, you can’t have a barbeque without the Ice Cube and the Snoop Dogg [or] no kind of West Coast, I think they are pretty much known for the barbeques, they known for getting a barbeque crackin’. Some old school, you can’t do no barbeque if you don’t have some Isley Brothers.

AllHipHop.com: What did you listen to at barbeques growing up?

Young Buck: I remember Tupac Shakur, Biggie Smalls, N.W.A. But believe me, when it comes to N.W.A. and back then, I would just hear the music. Tupac and Biggie Smalls, I started to really understand it, through the “Brenda’s Got a Baby” and “Pour Out a Little Liquor.” I was a real “young buck” then, but I listened to Kool Moe Dee. When Kool Moe Dee came out with the “Wild Wild West,” I had my cap gun in my hands. I was one of them young n***as moving like that.

AllHipHop.com: What kind of food are you into, Banks?

Lloyd Banks: Probably the same thing you like, man. I don’t eat pork or nothing like that, but I get my chicken in. That’s about it. I’m on a workout diet right now. I’m a regular dude, as far as going to the big restaurants and stuff like that, I’m not that bourgeoisie with it. I might just get some food from my grandmother. I don’t trust anybody. I don’t want to get sick before the show.

AllHipHop.com: Your grandmother?

Lloyd Banks: My grandmother is the best cook in the world.

AllHipHop.com: What’s your favorite dish that she makes?

Lloyd Banks: Jerk chicken, rice and beans. I’m half black and half Puerto Rican, so the Puerto Rican side of me is on the plate every night. So rice and beans, barbeque chicken rice and beans, everything got rice involved.

AllHipHop.com: What’s the food in Nashville about? Is it all about barbeque?

Young Buck: I mean, barbeque-wise, we f**k with the beef ribs, chicken, potato salad, barbeque beans. I don’t f**k with the pork. You got to have the grilled barbeque shrimp. I am all over the stove myself, puttin’ it together myself.

AllHipHop.com: You cook?

Young Buck: They don’t catch me in that mode everyday, but 50 [Cent] has had some of that Young Buck barbeque. The whole crew can co-sign my gangsta with it. I’m a bad muthaf**ka, know what I mean?

AllHipHop.com: Who’d you learn the game from?

Young Buck: I learned the game from the streets, nobody sat me down…

AllHipHop.com: [Laughing] The barbeque game.

Young Buck: My moms. I watched my moms. I was real young when my mom would have get-togethers, barbeques, card games, and fish-frys. My mom was a hell of a cook, and I got it out of her, my father wasn’t really there. I had to take care of the whole house, I had a house of about six or seven muthaf**kas, so I had to feed the whole crew.

AllHipHop.com: You mentioned card games, do you play video games? There’s going to be a gaming tournament coming up at the AllHipHop.com Barbeque…

Young Buck: I don’t play no video games, but I got a couple of homeboys who are sick. I like to bet. I bet money – know what I mean? I got a homeboy who can whoop anybody’s ass, take any game there is, straight up sportswise. So, put that on AllHipHop.com – if there’s anybody out there willing to put up any money up, straight up.

Lloyd Banks: I play the first few weeks when they come out, then I don’t really have enough time. I used to be an NBA Live head, and played Madden too. We played for money though. It gets old though. I’m always on the go and don’t have enough time. When I’m not recording or have free time, we sit down and play. I am the champ though, so I guess I’m rather good.

name, Loud. Sources told AllHipHop.com that the mogul is planning a relaunch of

the Loud brand, including a website and a mobile effort, Loud Mobile. Loud

closed its doors in 2002 and Sony acquired the Loud name when it purchased the

label from Rifkind, who launched a new label, SRC Records with Universal. Loud

Records boasted a roster of numerous Hip-Hop acts, many of which are still recording

today. Former

artists on the label include Wu-Tang Clan, Xzibit, Mobb Deep, Big Pun, Tha Alkaholiks,

Lil’ Flip and others.TVT

Records has signed New Orleans rapper Awood "Magic" Johnson and the

rapper is preparing his TVT debut, tentatively titled Before & After.

Magic, who recorded for C-Murder’s Tru Records and Master P.’s No Limit imprint,

the masses. "With TVT Records behind me, I can finally make the mark on this

industry I know I was meant to make," Magic said. "TVT’s so strong in

the South, and together we’re gonna take it to the very bottom — the Ninth Ward!"

by the legendary style Keith & Kevin were well known for, which was a dramatic

sense of fashion, including matching outfits, trench coats and often times sporting

cigars in their routines,” commented Ray Riccio, CEO of Sedgwick & Cedar.

“They are the founding fathers of the B-Boy movement, one of the most artistic

fusions of body and music ever created. It became so connected to the music that

it became an essential element of hip hop culture.” Sedgwick & Cedar,

which debuted in Spring 2005, features some of the most influential figures in

Hip-Hop history that have lent their images and likeness to the clothing line.

Afrika Bambaataa, Grandmaster Caz, Melle Mel, Chief Rocker Busy Bee and Sha-Rock

Former Power 105.1

FM DJ Star has filed a $55 million defamation lawsuit against the city councilman

who prompted the radio station to fire him. The

suit, filed today (Aug. 2) by attorney James Cinque, accuses City Councilman John

Liu (D-Queens) of launching a malicious crusade against Star that led to his firing

and arrest. "Councilman

Liu has continued to publicly make false, disparaging statements about me,"

Star, 42, said in a statement. Liu

publicly criticized the shock jock and called for a boycott of Power 105 after

Star made anti-Asian comments about the family of rival on-air personality DJ

Envy, Gia Casey, in May. Star

also made remarks implying a threat of sexual abuse against the couple’s four-year-old

child and threatened to urinate on the girl. He offered $500 to any listener who

provided details about where the girl went to school. Star

was later arrested and charged with harassment and endangering the welfare of

a child. Despite

criminal charges being dropped if he does three days of community service and

stays out of trouble for six months, Star said he has to even the score with Liu

Police Seek Suspects In Skanbino Mob Murders

Authorities

are investigating the recent deaths of two members of the Flint, Mich. rap group

Skanibino Mob.

Deion J.L. "Bone Skanless" Smith was gunned down Friday (July 28) in

a hail of AK-47 gunfire outside his home on Alma Avenue. The 32-year-old rapper’s

fellow Skanbino member Marcus Mosley (AKA Young Kee) was found shot to death on

Lawndale Avenue near Dayton Street on Monday (July 31). Although

they haven’t ruled out a connection between the killings, police cite no evidence

linking the crimes. A woman who was with Smith is expected to survive the ordeal,

despite being critically wounded.No

arrests have been made in the case. However, authorities impounded a car that

matched the description of the vehicle used in Smith’s slaying after a man abandoned

it at a gas station Sunday morning after seeing police.Investigators

are believed to have information pointing to a suspect in "at least one of

the shootings," Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton told the Flint

Journal.

Smith survived being shot five times at close range and was acquitted of a murder

charge in 2002 in the

shooting death of a Flint man. The rapper was on probation for gun

possession when he was killed.The

32-year-old Mosley also ran afoul of the law when he was sentenced to 4 years

in prison in 1994 for cocaine possession. In 2001, he was caught with a gun in

his waistband during a drug bust, in which police also found $20,000 hidden in

a football.Mosley

denied having the gun but was sentenced to a year of probation in 2005. On

July 13, Smith attended a funeral for his 5-year-old niece, NiYauna S. Jones,

who was shot and killed by unknown assailants while riding with a relative who

was test driving a new car.

UGK Working On New Album, Bun B. Addresses Fellie Fel Diss Rumors

Bun

B. of UGK is setting up the next leg of their career by positioning their status

as mature, vets amid a rush of new talents.According

to Bun B., maturity and perseverance is what allowed the group to remain longtime

fixtures in the rap industry."Being

a southern n***a, we used to have to fight for our position. But now southern

rappers are valid and we just have to make the most of it. We know all the drills

and all the plays. I know the play book and that’s what’s important. We learned

how to deal with radio, record stores. We just didn’t have the push and that’s

what all Southern acts were missing at one time."To

continue, the Texas rappers UGK are preparing their final solo album as Jive recording

artists and are assembling a team of all-star producers to help create the self-titled

album.An

all-star line up of hit making producers have lined up for the group’s latest

effort, according to Bun B."We

are about to go to Las Vegas for a week to lock in with Timbaland, 36 Mafia, Cool

and Dre," Bun B. revealed to AllHipHop.com. "This album is going to

be a beast, I wouldn’t b####### you. Jazzy [Pha], Manny [Fresh], Timbaland, Blackout

Movement [and] The Runnaz."We

[are] trying to make a well rounded album," Bun B. said. "We want to

take Southern rap back to a certain feel. Banging ass music and real talk. The

solo albums were to keep this UGK going and this is new album is for the hardcore

fans."As

artists, the new album will reflect the continued growth of UGK, who released

their first album The Southern Way for Big Tyme Records in 1991.Bun

B. also addressed a growing controversy stemming from a lyric on the new single

"Can’t Stop the Rain 2006" featuring Shaq and Papoose, from Kay Slay

and Greg Street’s compilation, The Champions: North Meets South.Rumors

started speculating the Bun B. took a swipe at West coast DJ Felli Fel of Power

106, with the line "n***as used to be on top/but now you fell like Felli/""Fellie

knows I f**k with him," Bun B. clarified. I don’t have any issues with Fellie

Fel. He knows I f**k with him. But then everyone calling saying ‘that n***a dissed

you, when really I bigged him up. Instead I got some backlash. We don’t need anything

hindering this project because of what we are trying to do, bringing the north

and south together. If I don’t squash it, it’s going to give the beef validity.

I was giving Fellie a shout out."The

misunderstanding is minor compared to the tribulations the group has seen in its

15-year history.UGK

suffered a minor set back when group member Chad "Pimp C" Butler was

incarcerated in 2002 for parole violations. He served 3 years in prison and was

released in 2005.During

Pimp C’s three year incarceration, Bun B. made numerous cameo appearances and

dropped a solo album Trill, while Pimp C. released The Sweet James Jones

Stories from jail in 2005, as well as his album Pimpilation, which

debuted at #1 on Billboard‘s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.

whutduzFMstand4?

Artist: PackFMTitle: whutduzFMstand4?Rating: 4 StarsReviewed by: Andrew Kameka

Subterranean vet answers doubters with well-rounded broadcast.

The call for rappers to return to their New York sh*t is growing louder, but not everyone wants to answer. Emerging from Hip-Hop’s Mecca with his own ambitious style is the cocksure (pause) PackFM. The Brooklyn-native avoids the labels placed on NYC’s current MC’s, but there is one brand he can’t escape-his own. Even before his group Extended Famm debuted with 2002’s Happy F*ck You Songs, PackFM’s on-stage moniker has raised more questions than The Da Vinci Code. Fans and journalists keep asking what the last two letters in his name mean, but inquiring minds will be at ease after hearing his appropriately-titled debut album, whutduzFMstand4? (QN5/Avatar).

Mr. FM packs the confidence and lyricism that New York MC’s are known for, but he does not subscribe to any other notion of how he should sound. The mystery man treads his own path and seems uninhibited on the literally ground-breaking “Stomp”. His boastful lyrics and hard-hitting punchlines over a Middle-Eastern influenced beat should connect with both backpackers and club-goers alike. Forget being on his New York sh*t; PackFM is on some other sh*t.

The QN5 stable of in-house producers, including Elite, Deacon the Villain, Domingo, Kno, and Tonedeff, gives whutduzFMstand4? a balance between consistency and variety. Tone channels the upbeat swing of Cab Calloway on “Suzie”, while the graffiti-appreciative “Click, Clack, Spray” features a shadowy setting courtesy of Deacon. “I Can’t Win” is one of the rare occasions that the MC-producer combination fizzles. Elite’s dramatic creation deserves more than predictable rhymes about struggling to escape industry politics. Topic woes also appear on “Excuses” when iCon the Mic King and FM try to justify being late for work, dates with girlfriends, and studio sessions. The song is neither clever nor funny, so the duo should come up with a few reasons to explain this misstep.

Listeners will continue speculating about what “FM” stands for because Pack refuses to answer the question. On the title track, he asks why people focus on his name rather than his message, rapping, “I find it hard to do better when I’m giving you my heart and all you ask about is two letters.” The display of vulnerability is a respectable change from the battle MC that listeners mistakenly assume him to solely be.

whutduzFMstand4? shows PackFM as an MC capable of capturing both the audience’s attention and imagination. Overall, the mix of pensive and cocky rhymes mesh well with the stirring beats, making this debut an intriguing riddle. Hip-Hop fans may not discover what “FM” stands for, but at least they will know what the man behind the name represents. The album proves that the search for an answer can be more rewarding than finding one.

Africa Hot!: The Afrofuture Sessions

Nigerian beatmaker takes listeners on a voyage of afrobeat, Hip-Hop and brokenbeat futuresound.

Nigerian-born producer and vocalist Wale Oyejide lets you know just what to expect from his new album with its title: Africahot! The Afrofuture Sessions (Shaman Work). Oyejide has already experimented with instrumental Hip-Hop and afro-beat on his first two albums, and his latest effort attempts to combine both genres along with the occasional brokenbeat groove. While Hip-Hop diehards might be unhappy with the album’s scarcity of straight up rap songs (three), AfricaHot! should prove a worthy listen to anyone looking to take a well-mixed voyage through different musical styles.

The album’s best feature is derived from Oyejide’s ability to transcend genres and emotions. The title track makes you want to hit the dancefloor with pounding nu-afrobeat rhythms, while “Maybe You & I” mesmerizes with chill, jazzy brokenbeat grooves. “H.I.V.” provides Oyejide a serious soapbox to expound upon Africa’s AIDS crisis, while guest stars Ta’Raach and Lil’ Sci rock smooth rhymes on “One Day, Everything Changed” and “Keep Shining”. Yet despite all these various influences and sounds, the album never feels scattered, as Oyejide’s beats and vocals tie everything together with an unmistakably African vibe that never ventures into world music cheese.

The only downside to AfricaHot! is that it only briefly touches afrobeat influenced Hip-Hop. As fans of both genres can attest, it’s clear that the potential here is great, and while Oyejide cracks the door another few inches, it would be nice to see someone swing it wide open. However, Oyejide succeeds in his goal, smoothly transitioning from earthy afrobeat to re-imagined Hip-Hop to groovy brokenbeat, all in one album. If AfricaHot! truly does represent the future of afrobeat, then that’s a great sign.
