(AllHipHop News) DJ Premier recently sat down to talk with AllHipHop.com about his label’s first compilation and working with the various artists on the label, as well as veterans. Year Round Records’ first release Get Used To Us is a compilation record that features guest appearances from Styles P., Joell Ortiz, Saigon, Freddie Foxxx, KRS-One, Grand Puba and others. According to Premier, Year Round has six albums lined up for 2011: KRS-One’s Return of the Boom Bip, Pete Rock Vs. DJ Premier, Freddie Foxxx’s The Kolexion, NYG’z’s Hustlaz Union: Local NYG, Nick Jovas’ Destination Unknown and Tef’s album Contraband. “It’s a beautiful thing that everyone has a vision, because I have always been a visionary, which is why i’ve existed all these years, 22 years professionally,” DJ Premier told AllHipHop.com in an exclusive interview. According to Preem, Get Used To Us is a sampling of the material to come from Year Round Records, which is focusing on developing new acts, by introducing them along side established veterans. “With the compilation, I took two or three projects from every project, remixes we did on vinyl, so I said let’s put all that [out],” DJ Premier told AllHipHop.com. DJ Premier stated that his label’s debut offering would be available digitally and in several other traditional formats. In addition to stores like Best Buy and Target, Preem stated that the album would also be available in mom and pop stores and on vinyl. “Best Buy, Target will carry my stuff. I know all the underground stores that still carry vinyl for sampling and digging some people want to have the physical product,” DJ Premier explained. “I still like to read the linear notes and read everything and just look at the CD and the artwork. I want to provide that.”Although the acts on Year Round Records are establishing their identities and building their brands, DJ Premier hand selected each artist because of their individuality, their professionalism and their ability to execute the vision for their music. “Artist wise, everybody has their own lane,” Premier continued. “You gotta have a good live show, you gotta make good records, know how to interview, you gotta know how to put your image out there. With all these guys, I’ve never had to sit down and go ‘we’ll what do you want to do?’ As an artist, that means you paint pictures, how can you not visualize how you see yourself?Year Round Records: Get Used To Us is due in stores on December 7th, 2010.
“King Kong”
“There I Go Again”
In that day the wolf and the lamb will live together; the leopard will lie down with the baby goat. The calf and the yearling will be safe with the lion, and a little child will lead them all.
–Isaiah 11:6 (New Living Translation)
Earlier this year I coined the phrase, demographic death, in relation to the state of Hip-Hop as a culture and industry. I explained, I believe Hip-Hop is experiencing a demographic death. When I say that the culture is reaching zero population growth what I mean is that for each old fan and member it seeks to appeal to, it is losing the chance to produce two new ones.
I touched on some of the law of cause and effect with this blurring radio formats; technological change; changing socioeconomic conditions; and cultural and intellectual elites who narrowly define rap, and Hip-Hop in ways that prevent it from being claimed by emerging markets and a younger fan base.
In my AllHipHop.com editorial, The New Synth Pop: Ke$ha, Young Money, and Justin Bieber Got This!(https://allhiphop.com/stories/editorial/archive/2010/04/14/22169549.aspx) I used this analogy to frame it:
Think of it something like a high school where the graduating classes are getting smaller each year. The senior class is enormous and the juniors are nearly as great in number but the sophomore class is a third smaller and the freshman are less than half the size of the senior class. I actually went to a high school where something like this happened. By the time the class who were freshmen – while I was a senior – had graduated, the high school was competing in tournaments and competitions in a smaller school category. It affected the prestige and status of the school and region across the state but it also allowed a new culture to enter.
Hip-Hop is for 18 year olds, my brilliant and beautiful 13-year old adviser told me this past weekend. What do you call the music you like? I asked her. I dont know, she said, indicating it didnt matter. It was the beginning of perhaps the most interesting conversation I have ever had about music. It spanned two days.
The primary reason why I think Hip-Hop is dying in this manner particularly in America is because its elder artists, intellectuals, and entrepreneurs underperform in the arena of technology.
In my controversial piece, Time Warp: 2010 Artists Using The 1990s Business Model, (https://allhiphop.com/stories/editorial/archive/2010/10/26/22455451.aspx) I stated this in terms of artists and entrepreneurs primarily who remain fascinated by the major record label- corporate radio station-video channel system. But I could also apply it to leading intellectuals in the culture as well as media outlets and talk show hosts who never intelligently deal with economics and technology in their critique of Hip-Hop. Thats why, sadly, one has to go to non-Hip-Hop sources like The Wall Street Journal to get a worthwhile assessment of the business side of the industry, and the non-industry factors that impact the culture and industry. Yes, I am saying that the vast majority of rap intellectuals and journalists are more concerned with the formula of gossip, sex, conflict (beef) and a narrow form of political debate, than dealing with business principles .
With this weekly Hip-Hoppreneur column Ive tried to make a contribution to improve this.
Enter Soulja Boy.
All one has to do to is carefully look at the recent coverage of his business and marketing tactics (and his thought process) to appreciate that this rapper, perhaps more than any other street, mainstream, conscious, or political movement is capable of reversing raps demographic death.
The narrow cultural and intellectual elite cant appreciate this and would rather focus on a supposed beef between Soulja Boy and Lupe Fiasco. Anyone who reads what they said about each other, up to this point, knows there is creative tension there but this is hardly worthy of our serious attention. While Soulja Boy took the first shot, apparently unprovoked, saying, I dont want to be super-Lupe-Fiasco-lyrical and n***** dont know what the f*** Im talking about. Lupe has been a good sport about it and responded accordingly on S.L.R. (Super Lupe Rap), So dont be scared to take the Super Lu route, Top 5 Alive and Ive only got two out. School you on your history, Ill tell you what you bout, fight for all the right things and let the Huey New out. Pharrell, what these n***** talkin bout? Two man Big Pun, a one man Slaughterhouse, a two album Jay-Z, a one n**** Wu-Tang, a younger hungry Mos Def, a conscious rappin Lil Wayne.
Damn, Lupe is nice.
To me, Lupes response is excellent and addresses Soulja Boy correctly, and in context. I dont have a problem with his brilliant surgical strike. My eyebrow raises however when many of Lupes supporters the cultural and intellectual elite combined with some in the lyrical underground use the supposed Soulja Boy vs. Lupe Fiasco, to dismiss the 20-year old Soulja Boy completely, as if he is a Hip-Hop anti-Christ or one who has no legitimate place in the culture. These folks to me, however sincere, dont understand that their mentality is one of the reasons why Hip-Hop is dying, demographically.
I wonder what they will say when Lupe ends up doing a track with Soulja Boy (like everyone else is starting to do).
What stands out in the coverage of Souljah Boys business model (https://allhiphop.com/stories/news/archive/2010/11/01/22464913.aspx) is what stands out as missing in the worldview of the two sides of the rap elite (those still fascinated by the old major record label infrastructure and those who style themselves as purists concerned only with lyrics) the importance of technology in branding and building an independent and new fan base. That and the lack of an international focus (which is why Im advising Nigerian rap superstar Naeto C: http://www.cedricmuhammad.com/storm-360-and-cedric-muhammad-announce-strategic-partnership-in-support-of-naeto-c/) may be the long-term kiss of death for American Hip-Hop.
One excerpt of a recent article reads:
New marketing for Soulja Boys upcoming project entails using the services of a company by the name of SayNow.
I took it a step further with this company called SayNow, and thats basically a phone number that lets you talk to all your fans like how Twitter is, Soulja Boy told the Wall Street Journal. SayNow is like, if a fans calls my line number and they want to subscribe to you, so that means they hear any message that you leave them. If I call and leave a message it goes directly to all 4.9 million people at one time.
Always finding new ways to market his projects, Soulja Boy now has over 20 websites working directly under him or for him.
I just thought, like I should build as many websites as possible, Soulja Boy said. When I was unsigned and on the grind trying to come up, I would make a lot of websites and just try and get my names out there. Now that I am in the position I am in now, I just like to take all of my creative ideas and put them on a website to give fans something to do.
Most of the elites have never even heard about SayNow and even fewer understand that this company is not just at the center of where music marketing is heading but also involved in an emerging debate over the future of the use of the telephone itself. These elites, Im sure, know next to nothing about this piece by SayNows founder, and CEO Nikhyl Singhal Phone Numbers Are Dead, They Just Dont Know It Yet. (http://techcrunch.com/2010/08/28/phone-numbers-dead/).
Sure, Soulja Boy is only a promotional face, for a company like this but in being open to doing business with companies with cutting edge technologies he has a better understanding of the non-music industry forces impacting the culture and industry than many supposedly political, or conscious rappers.
But perhaps more importantly, his comfort with technology places his finger on the pulse of where the demographics that guide marketing are headed, and how to capture the youth who are growing up in a world – as toddlers, pre-teens, and teenagers far different than the one that most of those still fascinated by the corporate-major label infrastructure or who only judge an entire culture by lyrical content, grew up in.
If you are 13 years old right now, you have grown up your entire lives with the Internet around you; hundreds of cable channels available to you; and with the mobile phone as your window and interface to the world. Youve learned texting before typing. Youve been able to correspond instantly with the entire world through FaceBook and Skype since you were 10 and 11 years old.
Certainly, those of us in our 30s and 40s and 50s can guide these youngsters and teach them timeless life lessons but any of us who dismiss them as ignorant simply because they dont yet have knowledge of the political movements of the 1960s or an appreciation of their culture and history are throwing the baby out with the bath water.
And that attitude borders on arrogance when the elders dont accept the reality that when it comes to technology it is really the youngsters who are our teachers.
So when one considers 1) MTVs focus on youth branding (http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/4cb9931a-cb1d-11df-95c0-00144feab49a.html) 2) the turf war underway between Nickelodeon and Disney for the hearts and minds of preschoolers (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704462704575590231467452448.html) and 3) the NFLs push to grow its fan base with children under 12 (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703860104575508293696582522.html) it becomes clear that Soulja Boy is far from the worst enemy of Hip-Hop and actually could end up being its best friend.
While his music is not my personal favorite, I see nothing but redeeming qualities in Soulja Boy when I look at the big picture.
And in 2010 how can anyone leave entrepreneurship and technology out of the picture?
My 13-Year Old Adviser concurs, not only aware of SayNow but also an admirer of Soulja Boys staying power in the midst of criticism telling me (by text), I like him because he is from down south, and for him to make it to New York and still be big now is really good.
Lyrical content is very important, but it is not the only way a rapper can teach, or be positive.
Soulja Boy can lead us

WIZ AIN’T HAVE 30 POUNDS!!!
There was a huge rumor running around with the recent arrest of Wiz Khalifa. That rumor was that Wiz was found with 30 pounds of the sticky icky icky. Well, I am getting word BACK that is was nowhere near that. A full 30 pounds of weed is like a small Christmas Tree. So, I definitely want to clear that up. The young’un was formally charged with felony counts of drug trafficking, maintaining a dwelling/ a place for the sale of a controlled substance, and misdemeanor offenses of possession of drug paraphernalia.
KID CUDI UPSET BET!
I don’t know what happened, but I heard BET brass is not happy at all about Kid Cudi because of this interview.
I didn’t think it was that bad.
SNOOP AND BILLY DEE WILLIAMS: WHAT DO THEY HAVE IN COMMON?
I heard Snoop is going to be the new face of Colt 45! LOL!
Here a commercial:
C. MILLI GOT SHOULD BE CALLED 4 MILLI!
So, I did a lil research and there is nothing formal on these guys divorce, Christina Milian and The Dream. But, I did get some good rumors. But first, they say that CM is very happy with the outcome. That means she caked up. Secondly, she supposedly got about 4-5 million in the deal and about $5,000 in child support! The crazy thing is these guys were only officially married for a short time. Nevertheless, they said that The Dream somehow coerced her into doing some things she did want to do as she was dealing with her pregnancy. Maybe the judge didn’t like that.
AMBER ROSE CHEATED ON KANY – AND HE CHOKED HER OUT!?
These are the lyrics to “Blame Game.” Kanye is a cold playa! But Amber is a pimp!
You werent perfect but you made life worth it?Stick around, some real feelings might surface?Been a long time since I spoke to you in a bathroom gripping you up and choking you? What the hell was I supposed to do?I know you aint getting this type of dick from that local dude? And if you are I hope you are have a good time?Cause Ill definitely be having mine
WHAT HAPPENED TO 50’s ARM?
He went into a taping of Chelsea Handler’s show in a sling. What’s up with the music anyway?
DAMN, THEY ARE HAPPY!Mr. and Mrs Swizzy were at a GQ event looking extra affectionate.
BIRDMAN: “KIM ASK FOR IT”
Real talk, but maybe Kim asked for it. Usually we dont try to make money like that thats not our theory. We make great music. We have never been the type to make songs about motherfuckas. I think Nicki is speaking in general, not just Kim personally. A lot of motherf*ckers have been hating on her success. To me, they are all asking for it. I dont think any of them has as a talented clique as Nicki. We a movement. Birdman recently told Vibe.
JEEZY ON THE BEEF: “I’M LOOKING FOR IT”
This between Rick Ross and Young Jeezy don’t seem to be cooling down like I thought. Jeezy and his crew were steady mobbin in the streets. Jeezy didn’t say any names in a recent video so lets hope this isn’t the renewal of their issues.
But he sure looked like he was on a hunt and reppin’ Crip extremely heavily. This will not get him a meeting with Obama. LOL. Speaking of Obama, didn’t Jeezy say he’d go ridin’ on people if they messed with O? I think that time has come.
ILLSEED’S QUICKIES
Fantasia ha dumped her married boyfriend for going on a trip with his ex-wife or wife. Whatever she is!
When he gets out of jail in 11 months, TI will not be able to leave the state of Georgia FOR A YEAR under the terms of his probation! DAG! That’s harsh!
Rumor has it pop singer Pink is preggers.
I am hearing there is going to be a full documentary on Nicki Minaj. You may have heard that too.
Bossip is reporting that Trey Songz has a man that works at Roc Nation. SHEESH! They are even naming names. They say dudes name is Brandin Deida.
Faith Evans and Misa Hylton Brim have their own reality show! Uh, that’s nothing that we should really get hype over. But, I used to like both of them back in the day.
N.E.R.D. flopped badly. They sold like 18k units in their first week.
I have been informed that we need to be concerned about Charles Hamilton. Dude is rumored to be suicidal. Hope that is false. He doesn’t seem to be the type to fake that.

(AllHipHop News) T.I. is being sued by an audio engineer who claims he was beaten and held hostage for 12 hours by one of the rapper’s employees, who was searching for a missing necklace. Norris Gresham, who is employed at Echo Studios, claims he was attacked on September 8th by a variety of men associated with Grand Hustle, including Killer Mike aka Mike Bigga, rapper Spodee, Mac Boney and Cortez “C Rod” Thomas, who was with T.I. when he was arrested in Los Angeles a few weeks prior to this altercation. Although T.I. was not in the recording studio when the assault took place, Gresham claims that the rapper was aware the assault was taking place because he was sent emails, text messages and videos of the incident as it unfolded. Gresham says that Killer Mike lost a diamond encrusted necklace and pendant, resulting in the the 12-hour-ordeal.When the necklace and medallion were found hidden in the ceiling, Spodee allegedly produced a gun and threatened to Kill Gresham. Instead of shooting him, Gresham was pushed down stairs and beaten, resulting in two of his teeth being knocked out. Video of the assault was allegedly sent to T.I., “who did nothing to stop the attack,” the complaint reads. T.I. started an 11 month prison sentence in November, for violating the terms of his probation, after he was arrested with his wife Tameka “Tiny” Cottle and C-Rod in Los Angeles, in possession of ecstasy.
(AllHipHop News) And like that, it was over.
MC Hammer has declared that the beef between he and Jay-Z has now come to an abrupt ending.
As a responsible veteran of twenty something years of this [Hip-Hop]. I can’t leave it out there with tensions, MC Hammer told AllHipHop.com exclusively. I am reading comments on both sides, it’s not about that, I have seen all of that before. There is an opportunity to say at some point. We onto the next thing. You know, Jay took his shot and I answered. Now let’s move on.
Hammer also told his nearly 2 million followers on Twitter that he was ready for peace.
7 Days is enough. I’m Accepting Jay Z at his “Word” and moving on. I made my point. #KingHammer, he tweeted. Jay-Z denied that he was dissing Hammer in recent interviews, stating he was only being lyrical on the Kanye West track “So Appalled.”
Furthermore, Hammer told AllHipHop.com that other matters were commanding his attention, those in his native Oakland.. The recent case surrounding Oscar Grants murder and the controversial two-year sentencing of the officer that killed him was one matter. Of the case Hammer tweeted, “The Justice System failed again. Oscar Grant (RIP) was an unarmed victim slain by the court today.” Even more recently, another unarmed man named Derrick Jones, 37, was shot and killed by police in Oakland.
Hammer recently sent out a picture of himself, Oscar Grants family and other members of the community (seen at the bottom of the article) after speaking out at an event.
Of the Jay-Z beef, while it is over, Hammer said that he simply wanted to make sure Hip-Hop was educated on who his is now, not only from the late 80s and a 90s.
I already know that this [beef] was going to go down like this. I know the Hip Hop audience. Aint nobody more aware than me, he concluded. Photo by Reginald James: Elaine Brown, Oscar Grant’s uncle Bobby, Beatrice X, MC Hammer and Keith Muhammad
Artist: Kanye WestAlbum: My Dark Beautiful Twisted FantasyRating: 10 out of 10This is the album that we have been hearing about for months. Anyone that was anybody had leaked comments to the rest of us about how good it was how Ye was back and how this album cleared his name. One year ago Kanye West was an exiled American name. Now? He has returned with a crash that has shaken the Hip Hop world; G.O.O.D Fridays has upped the benchmark for established artists everywhere. You cannot deny a hit record this is a saying that Kanye West should very well live by. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is a true testament to Kanyes magnificent ability to craft and create music. MBDTF is Mr. Wests fourth studio album and may very well be his best. The self-entitled Dark Fantasy opens the album softly; acting as a scapegoat for the gritty, hard, The Infamous-esque beat that soon follows. The song escalates throughout as Kanyes verses grow increasingly smarter and impetuous. (Kanyes rhymes have become brasher and sharper while still retaining its lyrical value). Just as you are leaving the feelings Dark Fantasy left you with, quickly you are thrown into Gorgeous featuring Kid Cudi and Raekwon (closing out the song). The beat is something to be felt with a guitar that evokes such raw comparisons to 1970s Rock. Raekwon comes to bat too (listening to that beat switch up will never got old). Other notables included the obvious releases, So Appalled, Monster, Power and of course the ensemble driven All of the Lights (the better We are the World of 2010). The All of the Lights Interlude actually turned into one of the best placed tracks on the entire album. MBDTF actually turns out to be a story in its own right which narrates itself perfectly. Common was not needed to tie any of the songs together – the placement and selection solves that on its own. Many balked at his use of auto-tune on 808s & Heartbreaks but it makes a comeback here – Runaway includes 3 minutes of Mr. West in almost inaudible auto-tune supported by majestic chords. Lost In The World features the same auto tune combined with a happy segue album which has a very tribal dance feel. Kanye Wests album is stadium music. The tracks are all big and epic thus allowing these to be feasible to perform for a dome full of people. In each of Kanyes previous four albums, there was always one track which stood out amongst the rest College Dropout Through the Wire, Late Registration Diamonds from Sierra Leone etc. MBDTF is no different in its presentation of Blame Game easily the best song on the entire album. A gripping tale about love lost, it again plays with your emotions. At first it tells a terrible story of a fallen relationship but then rounds itself into a monologue from Chris Rock. Never has a 180 degree turn been so accepted – Chris Rocks monologue not only completes the song, it adds to how great the song is. Kanye Wests affixation with the Phoenix has to be a metaphor for his career. In one year his career flourished, died, and resurrected itself in a way that only a mythical creature – or a really talented musician can. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is a redemption album in the best description. The amount of work put into this album is almost immeasurable only the music can quantify what we already know Kanye West is back.

(AllHipHop News) Geto Boys member Willie D. has broken his silence regarding an upcoming prison sentence and is planning to drop a new single before serving a year in prison for wire fraud. Willie D. has recorded a single titled “Cell Block Ready,” which will address his upcoming prison sentence for wire fraud, after he was convicted of scamming tens-of-thousands of dollars from European victims through a company called Texas One Wireless. “Somebody did me wrong somebody stole my phones,” Willie D. told Houston’s Fox 26. “And so I did the same thing to somebody else. I didn’t necessarily steal their phones, I took their money and didn’t ship them their orders. And I felt justified at the time. Of course now I realize I was wrong.”The rapper explained that the arrest has opened his eyes and has allowed him to change the direction of his life, in a more positive direction. “To be honest I was grateful, it could have been a whole lot worse,” Willie D. said of his prison sentence. “I sincerely thanked the judge He could have been a whole lot harder. “I tell you what, next to dealing with the loss of my mother, [telling me kids] was the hardest thing. Again this was a blessing in disguise. Would I have have chosen this route, no of course not. But it did allow me to take inventory of my life and get my act together.”The interview with Willie D. is below:

(AllHipHop News) Big Truck, a former member of Busta Rhyme’s entourage who feuded with the rapper in 2008 is attempting to appeal a September conviction for assault and robbery in Albany, New York. Big Truck, born William Robinson, was recently convicted of a violent encounter in Albany in January of 2010, shortly after moving to nearby Schenectady, from his hometown in Long Island, New York. The rapper, 37, was accused of slashing the face of Richard Garcia and giving the man permanent scars, during the violent altercation. During his trial in September, Big Truck testified that he reacted in self-defense, when two men attempted to rob him in the early morning hours. New testimony from two men, including the victims nephews, has surfaced, which could allow Big Truck to walk free. According to the Times Union, Jalil Miles, 17, is Richard Garcia’s nephew. He claims that Garcia, admitted that he was slashed in the face several times after he and another man attempted to rob Big Truck and bashed him on the side of the head with a pole. “My uncle asked me to help him find the person who cut his face and get revenge,” Miles said in the court document. “I refused to help him because I knew that what he tried to do was wrong and that the facial cuts he got were brought on by my uncle by his own wrongful actions.”Miles, 17, is currently jailed on a murder charge. Another man claimed that Garcia, who has an extensive criminal record, had a similar conversation with him as well and both men are willing to testify. Big Truck is slated to be sentenced to 8-25 years in prison, unless the new evidence is considered and the judge orders a new trial. At one point, Big Truck was a member of Busta Rhyme’s Flipmode Squad, but the pair had a falling out. Big Truck, who has allegedly starting recording Gospel rap, has also reconciled with Busta Rhymes, according to reports.
