Jasmine Mans Explains “The Mis-Education of a Barbie Doll”

Last week, spoken word poem Jasmine Mans released a poet that garnered her the adoration (and scorn) of the internet when the video virally spread across social networks and websites alike. In this exclusive editorial to AllHipHop.com, Mans explains, her poem “Nicki Minaj” (often called “The Mis-Education of a Barbie Doll”) was not a diss. It was a “dare.”A Dare.I do not want Nicki Minaj to be the next Lauryn Hill or MC Lyte, I want her to rap as if women like Assata Shakur and Toni Morrison exist.“The Miss-Education of a Barbie” is a call to action not only for Nicki Minaj but to all women in the entertainment industry. My poem targets Nicki Minaj because I am a long time fan and follower of her work. I recognize and applaud her lyrical abilities and the affect she has on women older and younger than myself. If we, as an audience, do not hold up a mirror to our artists, then who will? The “Miss-Education of a Barbie” questions the message that Nicki Minaj is relaying to her listeners. If Nicki Minaj seeks to simply entertain audiences with shallow concepts then my poem can be written off as irrelevant to her and her fans alike. However, if she seeks to make a difference in musical history and in the lives of her fans around the world then my piece questions her methods of doing so.Her “Barbie” image is an objectification of womanhood. How can we expect our male rappers to pay homage and respect to women when the voice that is representing us is tainted with sexual innuendos and “child’s play?”Most rappers say in response to this “look, I didn’t ask to be anyone’s role model, I am just doing me like always.” for Nicki, this isn’t true, she did ask to be famous. She engineered herself to be more marketable so that this could happen. Now that it happened, what will she do with that power? Will she be self-serving at the expense of her fans? Or will she be both entertaining, sexy and socially progressive for women? We don’t want the Nicki we know to go away, we want the Nicki we know to be 3 Dimensional.W.E.B. DuBois said all art is propaganda and should be used to uplift and challenge the African American community, and if art does not do such it is useless. Nicki Minaj is too powerful to be useless. My piece is not a “diss,” it is a dare.I dare Nicki Minaj to be a PHENOMENAL WOMAN and not a phenomenal “Barbie.”-Jasmine Mans

Lil Wayne First Artist Since Tupac To Have #1 Album In Jail

(AllHipHop News) Rapper Lil Wayne has become the first rapper since Tupac Shakur to have a #1 album on the charts, while serving time behind bars, after police found a loaded handgun on his bus in 2007. The rapper, who is currently finishing an eight-month prison sentence on Riker’s Island, has the #1 album in the country with his latest release, I Am Not A Human Being, which has moved over 323,000 copies since its release on September 27th. According to Billboard, the feat marks the first time a rapper has topped the charts from behind bars, since Tupac Shakur did it in 1995 with the release of his classic album, Me Against the World. Lil Wayne’s feat behind bars impressed former Death Row Records head Marion “Suge” Knight, who signed Shakur to the now-defunct, legendary label, after the release of Me Against the World. “It was great that they had that communication with fans,” Knight told Billboard, while adding that due to technology, during the 1990’s, “the world stopped” for an artist serving time behind bars. According to Bryan “Baby” Williams, Lil Wayne’s continued presence while he was incarcerated was a part of a carefully thought out strategy that was executed by Cash Money Records, Young Money Records and Lil Wayne’s management team. “The challenge was to make sure you feel like he never left,” Williams said. “We came with a good strategy, and it worked.”While Lil Wayne was incarcerated, he stayed in touch with fans through radio appearances, his fan site WeezyThanxYou.com and on a “Riker’s Remix” to “Light Up” featuring Drake and Jay-Z. Lil Wayne is scheduled to be released from Riker’s Island on Thursday (November 4th). The rapper is planning to release The Carter IV in addition to publishing his memoirs, which he penned while he was incarcerated.

MC Hammer Drops Jay-Z Diss ‘Better Run Run’

(AllHipHop News) Hip-Hop veteran MC Hammer has respond to lines in a recent Kanye West song titled “So Appalled” that featured rap star Jay-Z.

Hammer, an Oakland native, took offense to Jay-Z’s lines in the song which the Brooklyn wordsmith rapped:“And Hammer went broke so you know I’m more focused. I lost 30 mil so I spent another 30, cause unlike Hammer 30 million can’t hurt me.”

Hammer’s agitation was displayed to his 1,900,000 – plus Twitter followers in September, when he labeled Jay-Z “Hellboy” and promised a reply was in the works for Halloween night (October 31st). Hammer, born Stanley Kirk Burrell, dropped the song “Better Run Run (Official Jay-Z Diss)” early this morning (November 1st).

The video features a masked figure chasing a Jay-Z look-a-like through the woods by a devil. On the track, Hammer continues to insinuate that “Jay Hova” worships the devil and needs to find God.  He even takes small shot at Beyonce Knowles.

“The Devil said ‘I’ll give you the world’ ‘I’ll take it plus give me a girl. Mister devil can you give a sign he said throw the rock up, that’s one of mine'” During the 5-minute video, Hammer berates Jay-Z and threatens to “knock him out.”

At the end of the video, Hammer, who is an ordained minister, catches the Jay-Z look-a-like and baptizes him.

“We fought ‘Hell’ to get this out,” Hammer tweeted just moments before the video was released to the Internet.

“Better Run Run” –MC Hammer (Jay-Z Diss Track) Official Video

MC Hammer has released his response to Jay-Z’s verse on “So Appalled.” A new song, “Better Run Run” accompanies the video, which depicts the devil throwing up the “Roc” sign.

” During the video, the devil is seen as pursuing the Roc Nation CEO and helping write rhymes. At the end of the video, Hammer takes an actor playing Jay-Z and…well perhaps it is best to just watch the video.

Guess what I know that you don’t know? Credit illseed with this rumor if you will. Jay Electronica is going to be signing with Roc Nation this week. My sources tell me that the mystic homey is expected to sign on the dotted line as of Tuesday. Not only is is supposed to sign, he’s also release a new song/duet with Jay-Z, I’m hearing. The name of the song is “Rendezvous At Tiffany’s.” Apparently, to pop off the song and the partnership, the two titans are supposed to perform at Tiffany’s diamond store or something in New York City. That’s the extent of it right there, ya’ll. This could be incredible. Some of my sources have expressed that Jay Electronica is as unpredictable as any rapper they have ever seen and there is always the possibility that he won’t end up signing with Jay-Z after all. Apparently, he was very close to signing with Diddy too and it didn’t happen.

DID MC HAMMER ABORT THE ORIGINAL MISSION?

Honestly, I don’t know what to think here, nor do I know what is really going on. According to sources, it was impressed upon me that Hammer was going to lay out some really heavy data against Jay-Z on Halloween Night. It was my understanding that it was going to be some form of a movie that outlined Jay-Z’s affiliation with the Dark Side, if you will. But, it never happened. At the end of the day and after a MONTH of waiting, MC Hammer presented a youtube video from a Christian rapper named Bizzle. He’s been on AHH before and the video was about 10 months old. What happened?

WHAT HAPPENED? WALE VS BOSSMAN?

Wale has a couple beefs in the past, but check out the recent diss from Baltimore’s Bossman. He’s dissing Wale for some reason. For those that don’t know Wale is from the DC/PG Maryland area, which makes these guys “neighbors.”

Any idea what’s going on? Shout out to Chaun Lee.

Rhymefest: Why I’m Running For City Council

When Hip Hop first started, it was a local movement of artistic expression and social commentary. Hip Hop artists and lovers challenged the status quo by scratching records, tagging buildings and defying gravity. Those who had been ignored and forgotten grabbed the microphone, hopped on (and sometimes off) stage and ushered in what would become a global, billion dollar industry. The debate over content has been an ongoing one, as has the debate on the role that hip hop artists and businessmen should or shout not have in addressing social ills.  When Hip Hop first started out in the early eighties, there was a generational divide between the youth who were consumed with the culture and their parents and grandparents who were still clinging to ballads and funk. Fast forward twenty years and those children who once crowded the playgrounds around boom boxes are now parents and grandparents. Some of the artists who were young back then, are now in their forties and fifties. Members of the “Hip Hop Generation” are now entrepreneurs and both blue and white collar professionals. We’re practicing law, administering surgery and teaching and researching. We’re making money, making babies and some of us are making trouble but one thing we are not doing on a large scale is making policy and many of us are not voting. Many rappers have foundations and should be commended for the positive work they are doing through those foundations around the country. Throughout my career I’ve lended my name, my work and my money to countless foundations in order to help various causes but after the lights went out and the crowd disappeared, I wasn’t quite sure what would be done with my contribution. Despite living all around the world, I always manage return home to Chicago and it seems to get worse. People are unemployed, children are killing each other and there is an overall sense of doom and despair. My neighborhood which is located in Chicago’s 20th Ward has 30,000 registered voters and a little over 7,000 came out to vote in the last aldermanic election. That means about 23,000 people are not engaged and because of that our community is often ignored and not taken seriously.  All politics is local and if we are to improve our social and economic ills, we have to return to the “village” concept. While it may be a foreign concept to many, my grandmother speaks about a day when neighbors were familiar with each other, people supported businesses within their local communities and people came together to solve problems rather than working alone; isolated. There is no shortage of social welfare programs. There is no shortage of people who are disappointed and frustrated with their lives as they stand. But there is a shortage of rappers and high-profile people returning to their neighborhoods to help make them better. It is time for hip-hop to be used as a tool, rather than a weapon. When I walk the streets of my hood, MOST young men, when asked what they do with their free time or what they want to be when they grow up respond by saying either hoop or spit (basketball or rap).   When I announced my candidacy for Alderman of the 20th Ward on Thursday, October 22, from a small business, I did so because I know that hip hop has the power to transform and unify. We have the power to educate people, especially shorties on how to make their lives better. We have the power to build bridges between those who do not have money and those who do. We have the power to use our fearlessness and our strength to literally transform the hood – one block, one child, one family at a time.  For more information visit http://www.friendsofrhymefest.com or http://www.aim20.com.

“Roman’s Revenge” Nicki Minaj feat. Eminem

Here it is. Slim Shady meets Roman Zolanski on “Roman’s Revenge.” Nicki Minaj is spitting coolly, viciously and deadly all at the same time over a Swizz Beat track. Only thing is, it sounds more like Eminem and much less like Slim Shady. Nevertheless, Nicki goes hard at her detractors without naming names. Peep.
