Common: Hip-Hollywood, The Past & The Present

Common has been one of the most enduring rappers the game has ever come across. Furthermore, the rapper has been able to grow as an artist and expand his artsy wings as an entertainer. Movies? Check! Television? Check! New album? Check! AllHipHop conversed with the Chi-town vet and got  his thoughts on everything from Kanye’s new music to his current relationship with Ice Cube, a man he lyrically warred with in the 90s. Read all about it.

AllHipHop.com: You’ve evolved into quite the actor with roles like “Smoking Aces” and “American Gangster,” among others. How was it working with your co-stars in “Just Wright”?

Common: It was a fun experience to work with those actors. Latifah and Paula Patton they real cool. Latifah is like the queen point blank. She’s like a warm spirit, but still a leader, and she knows how to have fun.  Paula Patton is always having fun, smiling, you know, kicking it, but is very serious about her work. It was some special times on the set, but working with them was so much fun.

AllHipHop.com: Did you need anybody to fill in for you during the basketball scenes from the movie?

Common: That was definitely my game. I have played in one [celebrity basketball game] where I did pretty good.

AllHipHop.com: You were also playing with some of the biggest names in the NBA.

Common: My game is surreal. You see what I was doing against D. Wade, and you know that was Scott McKnight, so obviously I gotta have some skills. I didn’t have no stunt double, like nothing.

AllHipHop.com: Do you think acting is the future of your career in entertainment?

Common: I definitely love acting a lot, and I’m having a lot of fun doing it.  It’s like such a…it’s a career that I can have until I’m 70.   I love what it is- I love the art of acting. Not even just Hollywood, I’m talking about some acting classes, to eventually doing plays, and keep doing film and TV. Yea, I do love it. You know I just did a TV pilot for AMC called Hell On Wheels that I’m real excited about, but when I talk about acting, I definitely am enthused and I know I am very passionate about it, but I don’t feel that that takes away for my passion for hip hop. I’ve just been spending more time doing that because it’s building my career, and it’s a way of life that I want for my future.

AllHipHop.com: Then there is your legendary rap career…

Common: But when I get in the studio and I get to working on Hip-Hop, I feel that feeling where it’s like, “Man I’m hungry and I love rhyming and I love making music.”  So Hip-Hop is always going to be in my heart. It’s like if you got one child then you have another child, you’re still going to love both.

AllHipHop.com: Well, since you put it like that, how do you feel about Hip-Hop’s growth?

Common: Well I mean, Hip-Hop has its phases, and it’s like a human being. I’m 38, and I go through changes as a human being, I think Hip-Hop is like a living organism; it goes through changes- it’s not always going to be exactly what I think it should be.

AllHipHop.com: So, what do you do then?

Common: I just contribute what I can to give it something that I think is pure, something that is quality. I always seek out the artists that I think are clever, and farther, and got some skill. There still great Hip-Hop artists like there like Jay-Z, or Kanye, or I think Lil Wayne is really creative, and I think Drake is saying some real fly stuff. We got MCs out there, so I seek out the good, and the stuff that I ain’t really into, I hear in the club and dance with a girl for a minute, but don’t put it in my psyche too much.

AllHipHop.com: How would you describe the new music Kanye is putting out?

Common: Not majestic, but the word I want to say is like something that is still superstar about it, but you be like damn he still relate to the everyday person, even though it may be like superstar. I think that he hits on different subjects, and each style and says some clever stuff.

AllHipHop.com: Will you be on the album?

Common: Man I ain’t on there right now. I got a couple lines on this new G.O.O.D. music song that just came out, but maybe I will be on the album you know if it’s not done yet, it would be cool.

AllHipHop.com: What about you musically…where is that?

“[Kanye and I are] definitely going to do some music though. Yes, I’m working on [a new album] now…I’m focused, and I believe that the new album will come out in the spring.”-Common

Common: [Kanye and I are] definitely going to do some music though. Yes, I’m working on [a new album] now, I know I said I was working on it before, I was, but then I stopped and did promo for “Just Wright,” then stopped and did this TV show and was doing a couple other things that I needed to do. But now I’m focused, and working and I’m really- in all reality, I believe that the new album will come out in the spring. I’m looking at around April or May for the new album. It’s called The Believer.  I had that title for a while to be honest. The time has come. It’s coming.

AllHipHop.com: And what about your acting? What’s next?

Common: I’m just looking at some film projects right now, but I don’t have anything that I have filmed already. But like I mentioned, I do have the TV show that I’m real excited about. It’s a TV show that takes place in the 1800s, in 1865, so it’s a period piece. It’s about the building of the Transcontinental Railroad. It’s dope; I’m excited about that. It hasn’t got picked up, but if it’s a winner and gets picked up, then that’ll be coming out next summer.

AllHipHop.com: You and Serena were a hot item, but you broke up!

Common: Serena is just a beautiful woman, inside and out. We will always be close. Point blank. I will always have respect and love for her.

AllHipHop.com: Ice Cube and you had a pretty intense rap battle in the 90’s. Where are you two these days since you are both big in Hollywood and Hip-Hop?

Common: I ran into [Ice Cube] at Hip-Hop Honors, and it was all love. Point blank, when Cube and I had beef, I was a fan of his first and for most, I grew up like loving Cube. I still respected him as an artist, but I had to come at him. It’s like a boxer; if somebody challenge you in the ring, you got to go at him. But we all good now, and maybe we can produce a movie together or something.

AllHipHop.com: Anything else you are up to?

Common: I’ve been doing more spot dates. We doing some things like shows, I’m doing something with Diesel, with all these new MCs like Big Sean; it’s a presentation of MCs. I’m doing shows, definitely, but my focus is performing and recording this new album, along with obviously my acting career is definitely a big focus of mine too.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Wale Got Beat Up? Lil Wayne’s Ex Gets Re-Married?

UH OH! Did the Kid Cudi beef take a turn at “Gangsta Lane” and get violent? I doubt it, but that didn’t stop Wale from getting beat up in his native Washington D.C., people say. Rumor has it that he had a party at club Love in D.C. and didn’t get into his own party! Damn! But, here is the rumor…people saying he got beat up outside or something. Mind you, there are people claiming to be eyewitnesses to this. They also saying that none of his friends helped him. True or false? Wale says false. “Woke up to rumors….fret not…all is well in chocolate city,” he said. He did admit that he didn’t get into Love. OK, that is all.

Quick update: other sources say Wale didn’t get beat up at Love, but another place that he went to after that was unavailable. The Love club spot was hosted by Trey Songz so it was crazy. Seems like people took offense that Wale isn’t reppin’ DC the way they want him to rep. Sounds like something dumb if it happened.

LIL WAYNE’S EX MARRIED MEMPHITZ?

I heard MempHitz and Toya (Weezy’s ex-wife) got married over the weekend. Well, isn’t that something. From what I understand, they will take this to the next level and air it on Toya’s solo reality show when it airs. The melding of business and reality are colliding big time! OH, did I mention Toya’s allegedly pregnant too? Yep.

Bounty Killer Accused Of Beating Woman With A Hammer

(AllHipHop News) Dancehall artist Bounty Killer was arrested last night (September 18th) in Jamaica for allegedly beating a woman in his apartment. According to police, Bounty Killer is facing assault charges for striking the woman, who turned up at a police station badly bruised and bleeding, near the artist’s residence in St. Andrews. “She turned up here sometime after six and said that he used a hammer to beat her up,” said Deputy Superintendent, Altermoth Campbell. Bounty Killer, born Rodney Price, will stand before a judge sometime next week to answer the charges. Just this past April, Bounty Killer was arrested by the Constant Springs Police, for striking his girlfriend. He then allegedly called the woman and threatened her in the presence of the police. All of the charges were dropped against Bounty Killer in that incident, because the woman eventually dropped the charges against the artist. It is unclear if the woman assaulted last night is the same woman who was beat in April of 2010. Bounty Killer is also facing previous charges for possessing a firearm, possession of marijuana and other charges. The dancehall artist has collaborated with a number of rappers and artists, including No Doubt, Mya, Wyclef Jean, Busta Rhymes, Swizz Beatz, Capone-N-Noreaga and others.

The Better Trio Of Running Backs: Dallas or KC?

The better trio of RBs…Big D or KC?

The past two years the Dallas Cowboys have had the best running back trio in the NFL of Marion Barber, Felix Jones and Tashard Choice. All three posses different running styles and could be the starter for any other team in the NFL.

Barber is the Walter Payton esque tougher than ninja who has been in prison for ten years and mentally stronger than Big mama. Felix Jones is the scat back who can get through the hole with the quickness and is faster than email. T-Choice is the do everything back with the 20/15 vision. Last year the trio ran for 1,966 yards and 13 tds while averaging 4.9 yards per carry. I like the running back by committee because you preserve your guys for a preserve your guys over the course of several NFL seasons. The trio didn’t get off to a great start this past Sunday night with only 95 yards on 21 carries and no touchdowns. This is Jason Garrett’s doing more so than lack of bad play. The idiot also known as the Dallas Cowboys’ Offensive Coordinator decided to let Tony Romo throw the ball 47 times.

BUT….there is a new trio in town. It’s in Kansas City and is led by Thomas Jones with Jamaal Charles and Dexter McCluster serving as his backups. Thomas Jones is the slithery thumper between the tackles. Sidenote. He still go with Meagan Good? Sorry about that. Jamaal Charles is a poor man’s Chris Johnson but has more moves than CJ2K. Charles went stupid the last four games of last season racking up 658 yards. Last night, he took a run 56 yards to the house. McCluster is the rookie WR/RB hybrid who can catch it, run, and just plain gut your defense. McCluster also took a punt return 94 yards for a TD. Charles went stupid the last four games of last season racking up 658 yards. This trio went for 131 yards on 23 carries and 1 td.

Which trio is better? Sorry Big D, but the boys in Kansas City got y’all. For one, the KC backs have two home run threats that can take it the distance from anywhere on the field and don’t sleep on Thomas Jones he can go too when he has too. They are also better pass receivers out of the backfield. The Dallas trio are much better in pass protection and will beat you up physically over the course of a game. I’d rather deal with three bruising running backs because I have a chance to stop them as opposed to three backs that if we over pursue, miss one tackle, or make any mistake at all it could cost a defense a touch down.

I’m still a Raiders fan and I still hate the Chiefs, but right now they got the best RB trio in the League.

That’s all I got,

Raekwon Visits Facebook Headquarters

Raekwon is mostly known for his ill rhymes, being a Wu warrior and a pair of classic solo albums. However, could technologist be in the future of the Staten Island monster? Perhaps. He went to the headquarters of Facebook and offer fans a peep into the company that has more people on it than most countries. Perhaps, this is the next level for the Wu Tang?

Tattoo Tears of Joy…or Pain?

As if it wasn’t extremely difficult for us already, may I ask, “Why are

we now putting tattoos on our faces?”  Do we not realize that a tattoo

on our face will probably make our scarce options that more limited?

Or are we just so far gone that we just don’t care?

When I was a child, growing up tattoos weren’t a fad in the black

community.  Though I do not recall seeing them often, when they were

viewed it was done with intended purpose, symbolizing a person’s

“travels” and affiliations.  The “travels” that I’m referencing was

likely to prison, in which those “jail house” tats were easily

identifiable and the affiliations that I mention were either

acknowledgments of serving in the armed forces or belonging to a

motorcycle gang.  Needless to say, growing up in the inner city of

Baltimore, I was more familiar with the faded black, nondescript and

colorless “jail house” tattoos.  Though they were adorned minimally,

even then, convicts had enough intelligence to place their tattoos on

areas of their body that they could either reveal or choose to cover up

when they had something very important to do; such as, going on a job

interview as they tried to find work to reintegrate themselves back

into society.

Now I know that some people use their body as canvas to depict their

life story through decorative art.  I’m not opposed to tattoos at all,

nor have I appointed myself the AOTL, the Ambassador of Tattoo

Locations.  As a matter of fact, I have two tattoos myself, but I

decided to place them both in discreet places.  Only to be revealed by

choice.  Easy to be covered when necessary to adorn my dark colored

suit and power red tie, while sitting across the desk from someone

designated for me to convince, “why I’m the best applicant for the

job.”

Let’s be sensible people.  We’re not all going to be NBA athletes or

find ourselves making a living in the performing arts field as

musicians.  We’re not all going to be successful entrepreneurs.  Some

of us will have to eventually grow up and get employed.  And if you

don’t know, please allow me to tell you:  the unemployment rate is

high, affirmative action is now only a term rendered utterly useless by

application and your homeboy can’t get you a job with tear drops, Gucci

emblems, Polo logo’s, gang insignia, and all the other dumb s### that

we now get tatted on our face.  Smarten up people.  Or again, I ask,

are we that so far gone that we just don’t care?

As I stated earlier, when I was a child, tattoos weren’t what we raved

about.  Instead, where I’m from, we all wanted permanent gold teeth.

As crazy as it may sound now, I recall as young as elementary school,

in fifth grade, kids getting gold teeth for their birthday’s or

holidays.  I wanted to be part of the “in crowd,” I didn’t want to feel

left out at the time, so I asked my parents to take me to Dr. Russell,

the local Pediatric Dentist, to have a permanent gold tooth placed in

the front of my mouth.  I envisioned getting my tooth designed with a

champagne glass, tilted straw and three raised bubbles, as if my glass

was filled with the best.  Then eventually I was going to get a second

one beside it so every time I smiled it would look like my teeth were

toasting.  But unlike many of the “cool” parents, when asked, my folks

looked at me like I was crazy.  Still I persisted and I wanted to know

why all of my friends could enrich their smile with gold and I

couldn’t.  I was too young to understand the most logical reasoning’s,

the damage it does to your teeth and how one with gold teeth is

perceived, so my mother made something up that I believed for years.

She told me that as a student preparing to graduate from elementary

school and enter middle school as a sixth grader, I still had my baby

teeth in my mouth.  I was damn near grown before I realized the story

my mother had told me.

Still, I’m appreciative for the story that she told me because I was

deterred from getting permanent gold teeth as a child.   I then lived

long enough to see the damage that gold teeth caused, how people with

gold teeth were perceived by those unfamiliar with the culture, how

challenging it was to find decent paying jobs with gold teeth in your

mouth and the difficulties of having them removed.  I know, everybody

get grown and talk about getting things removed such as gold teeth and

tattoos.  I then ask, “How often do we get them removed?”

I correlate gold teeth of the past with tattoos of the present.  I

understand that it’s a means of expression, which we all have the

liberty to do.  I just want our youth and young people to be conscious

of the life altering decisions that they make.  Unless you have Lil

Wayne or Baby dough, please don’t get any tattoos on your face or all

over your bald head.  And even if you have money like they do, please

don’t get any tattoos on your face or all over your bald head.  I’m

tryna help you, just like my mother helped me.  Now thanks to her, I

don’t have two champagne glasses, with tilted straws and three raised

bubbles, as if my glasses were filled with the best bubbly, on my baby

teeth, appearing to toast every time I smile.  And it wasn’t as hard

for me to find a decent paying job!  Thanks mom!

Hopefully some young person will read what I’ve written, consider what

I’m saying and decide to choose their future over their present.  The

same things that make you laugh and rejoice, could also make you cry.

Tattoo tears of joy.

Jail Time Could Be Inevitable For Rapper T.I.

(AllHipHop News) If a statement released by Atlanta U.S. Attorney Sally Yates yesterday is to be believed, superstar rapper T.I. could be heading back to jail. “We are very disappointed in Mr. Harris’ recent conduct,” U.S. Attorney Sally Yates told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in a statement released Friday (September 17th). “We will make our sentencing recommendation at the revocation hearing.”The rapper and his wife, Tameka “Tiny” Cottle could face up to a year in California state prison, after they were caught being in possession of ecstasy in Hollywood, California on September 1st. To make matters worse, T.I. failed a drug test when traces of codeine were found in his system when he was drug tested shortly after the arrest and he was traveling with a convicted felon named Cortez “C-Rod” Thomas. All infractions are violations of the terms of T.I.’s three-year probation for attempting to purchase machine guns and silencers just before the BET Awards in October of 2007. In an unusual deal, U.S. District Judge Charles Pannell Jr. allowed the rapper to remain free and travel the country, to encourage at-risk youth to stay away from drugs, gangs and violence, as part of his sentence. The rapper, born Clifford Harris Jr., criss-crossed the country and clocked in 1,000 hours of probation time with at-risk youth,  before serving a year in prison for gun violations. T.I. was released in March of 2010 and appeared to be heading for Hollywood stardom, before his latest brush with the law. Judge Pannell ordered T.I. to stand before him and explain the latest charges, but a date for the hearing has not been set as of press time.

People are asking me all about this beef, if you want to call it that. I think its more like pork or turkey. Nevertheless, I don’t think there is any more to it. Its two dudes that don’t need to be beefing BEEFING. I can’t help, but think their is something else going on. This is so petty. NEVERtheless, there’s nothing else to really say about this.

Last but not least, Cudi talks about his coke habit.

Now, that’s crazy.

NELLY DISSES HIS FORMER HYPE MAN

Nelly and his masked hype man Slo Down are beefing. I mean, Slo Down feels he should get paid a lot for what he brings to the stage with his mask. Nelly feels he didn’t do anything, but wear a mask on stage. Nelly drops an ether bomb on his former homeboy.

“At least you could do was start a MASK business.” – Nelly. Nelly is wrong for that one. LOL!

CHARLIE WILSON AND KANYE!

I was on twitter today (@illseed) and I was talking to some people about Charlie Wilson and Kanye. Just basically seeing what was good with their collaboration matrix. They have done several songs and I was wondering what was behind it all. But I wasn’t dissing like some took it. But, I wanted to say that Charlie Wilson’s brother in the Gap Band recently died and Charlie was all busted up over it for obvious reasons. He was at the recent Hoodie Awards by Steve Harvey and he broke down on stage crying over his brother. But he still carried on to perform some of the ill Gap Band records.

Here is Charlie with his brother Robert. RIP.

YOUNG BUCK IS SUING 50 CENT? WANTS $5 MILLION?

Young Buck is trying his best to get out of the deal with G-Unit. Now, as you know, there is a rumor that Buck got out of the deal after he filed for Bankruptcy. But, I guess, I am wondering why he’s still suing unless he’s just attempting to get paid. “Mr. Brown intends to reorganize his debts and pay off the IRS in a timely manner… He will also be filing a lawsuit in the next 30-60 days against his former manager, G-Unit label and Mr. Curtis Jackson.” I’m not mad at him trying to get paid, but you know…we’ll see.

PAGE SIX SAYS:

This is from the New York Post:

Vanessa and Angela Simmons, the fame-loving daughters of Run-DMC’s Rev. Run, thought they could snag 50 Cent’s empty front-row seat at the G-Star runway show at Pier 94 on the West Side Highway. Fiddy was tapped to be a last-minute special guest at the Jay-Z/ Eminem concert, and told organizers he would miss the event. The Simmons kids showed up late, and tried to move from their assigned seats to the front row next to Liv Tyler, Kelly Os bourne, Natasha Bedingfield and “True Blood” actor Joe Manganiello. But organizers sent them back.

NICKI MINAJ THE ACTRESS?

SIGNS THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END?This one bothered me. It broke on Monday and it took me some time to get to it. Can you believe a man purporting to be Martin Luther King, Jr’s FRIEND was an actual informant? Well, this is what happened. The official photographer for the Civil Rights movement was a snitch. Dude was taking pics of all the leaders and then talking to “the man.” Ernest Withers I wish you were still living to hear the fury firsthand. If you see MLK in heaven, I hope he hits you with a right cross. I suspect he’s a few stories under King though. For the record, Withers family disputes this new revelation. I hope they are right.

EPIC FAIL OF THE DAY

Look what I jacked from  Daily Mail UK. A pair of friends test a stab-proof vest and one stabs the other to death. SMH!

A man has appeared in court to deny the manslaughter of his teenage friend who was knifed while trying on a stab-proof vest.

David Baxter, 31, is accused of killing Christopher Baker, 18, who died from a single knife wound to his chest during an incident in the early hours of April 17.

Baxter, of Newcastle, today pleaded not guilty to the manslaughter of Mr Baker, who died in Seaham, County Durham.

Prosecutor Mark Giuliani said: ‘The crown’s case is this is not an accident,  this was stupidity which was bound to result in what did happen.

Baxter’s defence will argue the death was caused by ‘horseplay’.

The case at Newcastle Crown Court was adjourned until November 29 for a five-day trial.

Baxter has been granted bail

Shane Mosley: It’s Not Over

Earlier this month, Sugar Shane Mosley celebrated his 39th birthday. At an age when most fighters are slowly adjusting to life after boxing, Mosley is looking to climb the ladder again after a high-profile loss to Floyd Mayweather back in May. Standing in front of him is a bigger, slick boxer in Sergio Mora, who has his own aspirations of stardom. The fight is a huge gamble, and another example from Mosley’s career that he will face anyone regardless of the style matchup.

Several questions remain unanswered from the Mayweather fight. Was it simply an off-night to a defensive wizard, or has Father Time caught up with Mosley? Can junior middleweight rejuvenate him, or will the young guns there close the book on him? Does he go after the Pacquiao-Margarito winner or a Miguel Cotto rematch after Mora? Whatever he decides, Shane Mosley has one message for the fans.

Don’t count him out just yet.

AllHipHop.com: You’re still a name fighter even after the Mayweather loss. What made you go with Sergio Mora instead of shooting for one of the belt holders at 154?

Mosley: I think he’s fought a lot of solid guys, and he’s coming down from 160 to 154. He’s from LA, and that’ll help to bring in a lot of fans from the California area to the Staples Center. We’re both hometown guys so it’s going to be a very exciting fight.

AllHipHop.com: This isn’t your first time at junior middleweight, but you had moved back down to welterweight a few years ago to get some of the bigger names. When you did that, you said you needed a few fights to adjust. How has your body adjusted to being back up at a higher weight?

Mosley: I think I feel more comfortable now compared to 154. I don’t really have to make the weight. I feel real sharp right now and ready to go.

AllHipHop.com: Will you be jumping back and forth between 147 and 154?

Mosley: I think I can still get to 147 if I wanted to. If there are fights I need to take there I’ll do it. Right now my body limit is between 147 and 154.

AllHipHop.com: After the Mayweather fight you mentioned that you had experienced neck problems during the fight. Was that due to the jabs you were taking from Mayweather or another problem that had to be addressed afterward?

Mosley: Well, it was right up in my neck during the fight. When I looked up in the fourth or fifth round, I was just tight. The jabs didn’t do it, and it unfortunately happened after I hit him with good shots in the second round. It is what it is.

AllHipHop.com: Overall, how would you assess Mayweather’s physical strength and his style in the ring now that you’ve faced him?

Mosley: Mayweather had decent power but it wasn’t like “whoa, this guy can hit.” His ability to move is really good. It just wasn’t my night. But if we fought again, we could assess a little better. There were a lot of things I couldn’t do, and he was just better that night.

AllHipHop.com: If you did get a rematch I’m assuming you’d want it at 154?

Mosley: 147 or 154, it doesn’t matter. I’m even good in the middle at 150.

AllHipHop.com: Strategy-wise, has it been easier preparing for Mora?

Mosley: With Mora he gives more angles. He switches between right-handed and southpaw, so it’s a little different. It’s a little hard to prepare for someone whose style is kind of crazy. But I’m doing pretty good.

AllHipHop.com: The junior middleweight division is getting strong with Pacquiao, Margarito, Miguel Cotto and Paul Williams. Assess the landscape of the division from your perspective.

Mosley: A lot of guys are moving from ’47 to ’54. Overall I’d say it’s one of the best divisions in the sport.

AllHipHop.com: If you win, would you be ready to go right after one of the champions?

Mosley: Yes, I think I can go at one of the world champions right now! But I would have had to sit on the sidelines and I’d rather not wait again. Sergio Mora was the best opportunity right now.

AllHipHop.com: Speaking of sitting on the sidelines, much of that was out of your control like the Haiti earthquake canceling the Berto fight. Being that you’ve just turned 39, how active do you want to be going forward?

Mosley: Next if I can get in the ring soon with the Pacquiao-Margarito winner or a Cotto rematch that would be great.

AllHipHop.com: You weren’t able to get Pacquiao in 2009, but you did face Margarito. How do you see their matchup going?

Mosley: I think Pacquiao comes out on top because he throws a lot of punches and he’s accurate. Margarito is definitely a tough fighter. He’s throws a lot of punches and he’s consistent. Styles make fights and it’ll look completely different from when I fought him.

AllHipHop.com: Golden Boy has been stacking the undercard recently for their PPV fights. Is there anyone you’re looking forward to seeing as a fan?

Mosley: I definitely want to see how Victor Ortiz and Saul Alvarez do as young guys. They are hot prospects coming up. Daniel Ponce de Leon is a good puncher. The undercard will be real exciting.

AllHipHop.com: Victor Ortiz mentioned you as someone that gave him good encouragement after he was upset by Marcos Maidana last year. Do you remember what you said to him?

Mosley: I told him those kinds of things can happen when you’ve fought a lot of fights. But you just got to come back. With that fight all kinds of different things were going through his head. I told him to go home; figure things out and then say what you have to say [to media and fans]. I think he did that and here he is back to fighting.

AllHipHop.com: After such a great career, what is your motivation to keep fighting?

Mosley: Well, I love to fight. I love to do it and I’m in great shape to do it and keep beating these guys. There’s still great fights out there for me, so why not go out there and fight them?

AllHipHop.com: Do you think fans have too much information about the contract issues like what happened with Haye and the Klitschkos and Mayweather-Pacquiao?

Mosley: Yeah I think they should be a little more secretive until after the fight. When fans know about these things it can make one fighter feel slighted if something gets out. So that would help if the fans did not know as much.

AllHipHop.com: The biggest non-fight of the year is Mayweather-Pacquiao. If they did fight who is your pick?

Mosley: That’s a pick ‘em fight, I really don’t know. Mayweather is the better boxer, but Pacquiao has that southpaw stance to give Mayweather problems. So it can go either way.

AllHipHop.com: What strategy is going to work best for Mora? Will you be aggressive and walk him down, or use more a counter-punching approach?

Mosley: I think I’ll have to mix both. He’s a mover so I’ll have to pressure him, too. He’s bigger, so there’s going to be a lot of punches thrown.

AllHipHop.com: Margarito was bigger size-wise than you, but you were actually stronger physically. Do you expect the same against Mora?

Mosley: I’m not sure, but I do know I’ll have more punching power. To me, that will be the difference.

AllHipHop.com: Alright Shane, good luck Saturday night. Any final words?

Mosley: Thanks for everything and you guys make sure you follow me on Twitter @SugarShaneM.

Sergio Mora: Does the Latin Snake Have the Venom to Finish Shane Mosley’s Career?

When breaking broke down this fight, Shane Mosley trainer Naazim Richardson called Sergio Mora one of the most underrated fighters in boxing.  Ever since appearing on the popular TV show The Contender, the fighter dubbed “The Latin Snake” has struggled to shed his reality series image and show fans that he indeed has the skills to be a top pound for pound fighter.

He appeared poised to do that when he scored a decision victory over Vernon Forrest in the summer of 2008 to pick up the WBC junior middleweight title. But the glory was short-lived, as Mora lost the belt three months later in rematch that was hampered by issues making weight. Fight cancelations would keep Mora out of the ring for all of 2009, and he finally returned in April with a tune-up bout on the undercard of Jones-Hopkins II.

Shane Mosley is no tune-up. Even at 39 years old, Sugar Shane represents the biggest fight of Mora’s life, and a chance to put a future Hall of Famer’s career to rest while breathing new life into his own. It’s now or never.

AllHipHop.com: This is an intriguing fight for several reasons. First, a lot of people are speculating if you can even make 154 pounds anymore without being physically drained. What made you comfortable taking such a big fight at a weight you’ve recently had issues making?

Mora: That’s a good question and a legitimate concern, because when I defended my title in my last fight against Vernon Forrest, I had a real difficult time making that weight. I wasn’t given enough time to prepare for it. It was made in like five weeks, so I only had that time to get down to that weight. But for this fight I had 10 weeks and that’s exactly the amount of time I need to make this weight comfortably and strong. I’m very prepared and my weight is fine. [Writer’s Note: At the weigh-in yesterday, Mora came in three pounds overweight at 157. After negotiating with Mosley’s camp and the California Athletic Commission, Mora lost the weight within an hour and came back at 153.6 pounds. He will lose 20% of his purse to Mosley.]

AllHipHop.com: You’ve always had a high punch output, but in your last fight I noticed you were very aggressive in looking for the knockout. Shane’s a better fighter, but will you be approaching this bout the same way?

Mora: I definitely have to be more careful with Shane. Shane’s a powerful, very fast, and experienced fighter. In my last fight, you’re right; I had planned on being more aggressive. I was off for a long time. I had two fights that were canceled with Kelly Pavlik and Daniel Edouard. I was coming off a 16 month layoff, and I was very spiteful and bitter. I wanted to take it out on my opponent. I was rusty for about two and half rounds. It literally came off and then it was on.

AllHipHop.com: A lot of people have written Shane off because of how badly he looked in May against Mayweather. But, it’s really hard to gauge that considering he was in there with one of the best defensive fighters in the world. When you looked at that fight and the previous one against Margarito, do you see any noticeable decline in Mosley?

Mora: I look at the Mayweather fight and see that he took a couple steps back. But he was fighting the best defensive and overall boxer in the world in Floyd Mayweather. Then you include his age and coming off a 16 month layoff. With those factors of course he would look horrible, but he still had a chance to take Mayweather out in the second round.

I think he’s more of a power puncher now. He’s always tried to take you out, but before he tried to do it more aggressively. Now he does it more in a counter-punching kind of way. I think he’s still dangerous; he proved that in the fight before with Margarito. I’ve been sparring with Margarito for over 10 years, and I know how tough it is to hurt that guy. And for Shane to knock him out the way he did, it was destruction! That tells me this guy has a lot left. One bad night doesn’t mean he’s done.

AllHipHop.com: This year I’ve had to talk more about why fights weren’t happening than big fights being made. Because contract issues are being leaked and fans know so much, do you think that’s a detriment to the business aspect of the sport?

Mora: I made this prediction about 10 years ago. I’m not a computer literate person. I think there’s too much information out there. That’s the reason I don’t have a Facebook, Myspace or a Twitter. Privacy is not there anymore. It relates to your question; fans don’t need to know all that.

Before, it was about the mystery of two fighters in camp sweating and sparring. You know who was ready on fight night by the look in their eyes in the ring. Now you can follow them on Twitter, “Hey I’m picking up my groceries.” Then you can go to Ustream and Youtube. You know what they’re doing. Floyd is on 24/7 throwing money around and acting like a fool at clubs.

I don’t like it, you don’t need all that. You just need to prepare and fans should be spectators. They don’t need to follow a person. Boxers aren’t supermen, they’re just normal people. This is our profession. They get too carried away with everything else.

AllHipHop.com: Is this trip back to junior middleweight just for the payday or will you be staying in this division?

Mora: Wherever the money is, that’s where I’ll take the opportunity. I think the middleweight division is suffering. Kelly Pavlik was carrying that division for a long time, and he’s been a disappointment for the last year and a half to two years because of the staph infection. There has been a lot of questions about his determination, heart and work ethic.

The junior middleweight division is very exciting. You got Pacquiao, Margarito, Paul Williams, and Sergio Martinez. I think this is where the money is and this is where I’d like to have my big fights.

AllHipHop.com: Who’s impressed you the most at 154?

Mora: I like [Sergei] Dzinziruk. He establishes pace with the jab. That’s the first time I’ve ever seen him fight although he’s been around the game a long time. Dzinziruk didn’t wow me with combinations, but he definitely impressed me with how he’s been around so long and been a champ. He’s really good at what he does. He has a great jab and is a good 1-2 puncher. He maintains the fight’s pace really well.

Kermit Cintron is off and on. He looks bad then he looks good. He’s inconsistent but he’s still up there.

James Kirkland was on the fast rise up there. I had him in camp for two months, and he’s really tough. I told him when he was in camp with me that his problems were going to be outside the ring. Sure enough, it came true.

Sergio Martinez moved up to middleweight but he’s still a [natural] junior middleweight. He’s a force to be reckoned with.

“K’9” Cornelius Bundrage, I’ve always liked him. He’s a solid fighter with a great work ethic from a fighting town in Detroit. He’s a newly crowned champ and I know what that’s like. But I think he’ll take things serious and surprise people.

AllHipHop.com: You’re a boxer that was able to engage fans with your personality on The Contender, and even in the ring when you do a little showboating. Do you think image is just as if not more important to your success than what you do in the ring?

Mora: Yeah, I believe so. There are a lot of guys who have all the talent, but just have no flavor or style. I’ll give you a perfect example. Paul Williams is one of the best fighters in the world pound for pound. Yet there’s no aura around him, he has no personality and the wrong kind of flash. Paul Williams should be 10 times bigger than he is.

It has nothing to do with his fighting. I don’t care, I like Paul. Me and him fought on the same cards and I love his people. But the mainstream doesn’t accept that. The same way they don’t accept me because I was on a television show. They have a hard time accepting me as one of the best fighters in the division because I was a reality TV star. I’ve suffered the same thing.

AllHipHop.com: How hard or easy has it been to block out your friendship with Shane going into this fight?

Mora: One thing about athletes is that we’re all very competitive. We’re not close friends but we are friends. I’ve known him for 10 years, but we understand that this is a business. This is what we do. This is our education, and how we make a living and feed ourselves. Even though we’re friends, there are people in our lives much more important than Sergio Mora and Shane Mosley. So we have to go out there and do our jobs well to maintain our reputations. Once you start slipping those opportunities become bleaker and bleaker. Those paydays become less and less. So we have to be on our toes that’s for sure.

AllHipHop.com: A lot of this is out of your control and comes down to available dates, but if you had your way how quickly do you want to be back in the ring?

Mora: Well, I’m gonna have my way. I have to have my way. I’m very motivated and focused on this fight. After this fight’s over I need one more fight by the end of the year. So I plan on fighting in December. Golden Boy has a lot of dates, and I hear Amir Khan is fighting in December and so is Bernard Hopkins. I’d love to get on either undercard.

AllHipHop.com: What’s your prediction on Pacquiao-Margarito?

Mora: I think Pacquiao wins it very easily for about 7-8 rounds. Margarito will be cut and bruised up. But if Pacquiao is not careful and gets a little reckless, he can get caught with something late. It all depends on how he reacts to getting caught late, because Margarito is going to land something. More than likely it’ll be an uppercut. And that’s a punch that can land on Pacquiao when he rushes in with his 1-2s. If he can withstand those shots Pacquiao wins an easy decision. If not Margarito knocks him out late. I’m going for Margarito but I think Pacquiao wins a decision.

AllHipHop.com: Khan-Maidana is now signed. How do you see that one?

Mora: Well I’ve never thought much about Amir Khan. I think anyone who can get knocked out in the first minute of the first round doesn’t have what it takes to be great. I do think he has a lot of natural ability, size and talent. He’s like a young De La Hoya. De La Hoya was huge when he started boxing at 135 and 140. He overpowering and outspeeding everyone. That’s where I think Amir Khan is at now.  Once he starts picking up the caliber of fighters with that suspect chin, he’s going to have some problems.

Amir Khan beats Maidana. Maidana has been outboxed before. I think he outboxes him easily. Khan will have problems with guys like Devon Alexander. I think Timothy Bradley beats him. It’ll be guys with a game plan, some pop, and are relentless.

AllHipHop.com: Any final thoughts?

Mora: I’m very excited and prepared to fight another legend in Shane Mosley. It should be a night of unexpected fireworks. People think he’s on his way out and people think I can’t box, so there is going to be some surprises.

AllHipHop.com: Great interview Sergio and best of luck on Saturday.

Mora: Thank you very much.
