AllhipHop Classics: Hip-Hop Reflects On 9/11 (2002)

A year after the September 11 tragedy, people had formulated their varied opinions of the matter that left nearly 3,000 people dead. The shock had yielded to reason and reflection. On this nine-year anniversary of September 11, AllHipHop Classics revisits what rap artists like Scarface, 50 Cent, Kool G Rap, Nelly, 8Ball, Skillz, Kimora Lee, Canibus and others thought after some of the dust settled. Originally posted September 11, 2002.On September 11, 2001, masses of Americans witnessed firsthand aspects

of a new sort of war unseen since World War II, but one year later the nation is reflecting

on the attacks on New York City and Washington D.C.

The attack on American soil, the first since

Pearl Harbor and the worst ever, resulted in the creation of a worldwide coalition

aimed at rooting out “terror,” alleged Anthrax attacks via the postal

service, a war of biblical proportions in the Middle East, a faltering economy

and yes, an impending war which seems to have the entire world divided.

Most Americans seemed unaware of the anti-American

fury that brewed overseas, or even more oblivious that it would be unleashed

in such a deadly, destructive manner. “What’s so cold is that s### was

totally unexpected – way outta the normal,” Scarface told AllHipHop.com.

“It let me know anything can happen.”

And for the past year, it seemed anything would

happen. Bush named John Ridge director of Homeland Security, a new position

to monitor possible terror attacks and issue warnings to the public. For the

months after the attacks America, especially New York, was on high alert and

as time passed, many were forced to return to their normal grind.

Scarface continued saying, traveling didn’t make

a difference to him and even revealed that he has a plan should terrorists attempt

to hi-jack a plane while he is riding. “When I get on the plane I take

two Sprite cans and two pillow cases. Now you can’t kill somebody who already

wanna die, but you can adminster some immense pain,” he quipped. “That’s

where the soda cans come into play. I’ma hit him with the pillow cases

and soda cans and get some respect outta his ass.”

Despite his valor, Face isn’t the norm. A recent

survey showed 42 percent of people surveyed reported depression, 21 percent

difficulty concentrating and 18 percent trouble sleeping.

“The big thing in my life is flying,”

Memphis vet 8Ball said. “Before that s###, I used to fly everywhere, two

or three times a week and since that, I think I’ve flown maybe four times.

If I’m able to take the bus where I’m going, if it’s close enough,

I’m doing that first.”

Similarly, Nelly also stopped flying after September

11th and tours the country by bus.

And most people seem to be overcome by a sense

of lingering anxiety.

“I’m in New York now and I was here

last year at the same time and it feels weird. I can’t make up my mind whether

I feel safe or not, because anything is possible,” Skillz of Rawkus Records

said.

“I always get nervous on the George Washington

Bridge,” Kimora Lee Simmons said referring the the New York City landmark that once offered a clear view of the Towers. Simmons acknowledged that she and her

husband, Russell Simmons, no longer fly on public planes. “It’s expensive

and not everyone can afford to do it, I realize that, but it gives us a better

peace of mind, so we do it when we can,” she said.

The Simmons’ were affected by the tragedies directly,

losing their lavish penthouse on Liberty Street, which was right across from

the World Trade Centers. “Yes, on September 11th we lost our house, which

was worth millions.,” she said, “That cannot possibly compare to the

value of all of the innocent souls lost. When I think of what I lost on those

terms, it’s extremely small.”

“I go to sleep and I am horrified when my

phone rings early,” California rapper Mystic concurred. “I don’t want

someone to call me and say something awful has happened.”

While Mystic admits to the anxiety that all of

us feel in some form or another, whether its flying on a plane, taking a train,

riding over a bridge or through a tunnel, she said that the attacks didn’t change

her over all attitude or change her work schedule.

“I went out on tour within two weeks of

the incident and there were very few other groups touring at the time,”

she said. “It felt healing to acknowledge and to talk to people about what

was going on.”

For a short period, even battling rappers appeared

to unite, just at the attacks seemed to united the country. Jay-Z, Hammer, Mystikal

and Young M.C. tossed their weight behind the cause recording songs and freestyles

addressing the attack.

Canibus even recorded a record, “Draft Me,”

supporting the war in Afghanistan. “I recorded that song because I was

angry,” Canibus told AllHipHop.com. ” I truly felt like going to war.”

Nevertheless, more than a year later, hip-hop

is as divided ever and things seem to have picked up in hip-hop right were they

left off.

“N*ggas dont mind, we been gettin f*cked

up, drunk and high this long, why not ride out like this?” Scarface asked.

“We aint did nothin since the civil rights. You can know what’s wrong,

but what you gonna do to fix it? I gotta a lot of respect for a motherf*cker

who is willing to die for what he believe in and no one here is.”

The events of September 11th forever changed

the way people viewed themselves and for most, served as an awakening to what

was going on in the world around us.

“The United States as a whole has been oppressing

people and killing innocent people for a long, long time and these are facts.

You can only beat someone down before they stand up and say ‘hell no,’”

Mystic said.

“What some people are fighting for is much

different than anything we know. We don’t understand what it’s like fighting

to eat, fighting just to live.”

“I feel like our country does a lot of dirt

that’s kept from the awareness of the American people. It jeopardizes the lives

of many citizens when the victims of our own government do things to retaliate,”

Kool G. Rap said previously to AllHipHop regarding Sept 11. “It’s a shame

innocent people have to suffer for their [the governments] actions.”

Kimora echoed the sentiments of G Rap and Scarface

as well. “We’re supposed to be one of the most powerful and we need to

change our foreign policy, because it’s affecting us,” she said.

The actions of September 11th 2001 proved one

thing for certain – it made Americans feel vulnerable and human.

A poll conducted last month said 73 percent of

Americans felt another terrorist attack would take place on American soil at

some point in the future.

“Hell yeah and when we least expect it,”

Scarface said. “They not gonna strike right now, they waiting. They waited,

what, 8 years to hit the Towers again?”

“I think other things are gonna happen.

Things will happen in forms we cant pull together in our minds right now,”

Mystic said somberly.

Conversely, Kimora was more optimistic. “I

hope not, let’s pray nothing more happens. We need to figure out how we can

improve these things and think about how it’s going to affect our children’s

children. We have to bring about change.”

“There are a lot of people who don’t

believe in voting to bring about change,” Mystic added. “I have been

voting since I was 18. You have to try. It’s f**ked up, especially with the

elections of last year, you have to try.”

50 Cent summed his feelings up in one thought.

“Nobody would care if planes hit the projects.

I’m from the bottom so my feelings on 9-11 is ‘sh*t happens,’” the

Queens-bred rapper said.

Pastor Cancels 9/11 Koran Burning; Rappers, Execs Comment

(AllHipHop News) A pastor from Florida has canceled his plans to burn copies of the Koran as part of a protest against a proposed mosque near the site of the World Trade Center terror attacks nine-years-ago today (September 11th). Pastor Terry Jones, who heads the tiny 70-member Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, Florida, had planned to burn copies of the holy book today, drawing condemnation, outrage and protests from around the world.Pastor Jones arrived in New York last night in hopes of obtaining a meeting with New York Imam, Feisal Abdul Rauf, to convince him to move the location of the mosque, which is near the location over 3,000 people from all ethnicities lost their lives in the terror attacks that leveled the WTC’s Twin Towers. “We have decided to cancel the burning,” Jones told NBC’s “Today” show this morning. “We will definitely not burn the Koran.”The news was welcomed by Hip-Hop mogul Russell Simmons, who has publicly supported the three-story Islamic cultural center, which is just two blocks from ground zero. Simmons’ artful expression of his opinion was seen around the world last month, when he commissioned a designer to create a variety of religious and spiritual symbols on the windows of his Liberty Street penthouse, which spelled out the word “Coexist.””It goes against the principles promoted by the prophets,” Russell Simmons told AllHipHop.com. “Burning the Koran is Anti-American and sacrilegious. American’s built this country on the First Amendment. Public figures are [now] engaging in a dialog that [would have] seemed ludicrous to me 10 years ago.”Pastor Jones’ plans also triggered a violent protest in Afghanistan, which left one dead on Friday (September 10th).”Its unfortunate that the pastor is protected by the 1st Amendment – his actions will definitely have repercussions against Americans, especially those who might be in countries fighting against insurgents,” said Muslim rapper Sadat X, echoing the sentiments of U.S. military leader Gen. David Petraeus, as well as President Barack Obama. Today, thousands of mourners gathered in New York to remember the victims of the September 11th terror attacks, which Present Barack Obama vowed to “never forget.””Today, we pause to remember a day that tested our country,” President Obama said. “On September 11, 2001, nearly 3,000 lives were lost in the deadliest attack on American soil in our history. We will never forget the images of planes vanishing into buildings; of photos hung by the families of the missing.  We will never forget the anger and sadness we felt. And while nine years have come and gone since that September morning, the passage of time will never diminish the pain and loss forever seared in the consciousness of our nation.”Police in New York are bracing for clashes between rival groups of protesters fighting for, or against the mosque’s location so close to the attacks.“As a first generation Turkish-American Muslim,” stated Turkkan, “I am saddened by the rhetoric that has taken over the national dialogue about religion since 9/11,” stated twenty-year media relations veteran Leyla Turkkan. “The media does not provide the correct representation of over a billion peace-loving Muslims in the world.”To combat the religious intolerance, Turkkan, who is CEO of the Catalyst Group, will offer pro-bono consultation to organizations that are attempting to build bridges between people of all denominations. “I intend on providing a more accurate portrayal of not only American Muslims, but all Americans who wish to preserve our identity as an inclusive society.  I believe it is imperative we preserve the rich tradition of diversity and religious freedom that has always defined America.”QuestionsView Results

Dr. Dre Settles $1 Million Studio Bill Dispute

(AllHipHop News) Super producer Dr. Dre has settled a million-dollar lawsuit with his longtime recording studio, Paramount Recording Studios. Paramount filed a $1,220,500 lawsuit against Dr. Dre, claiming the rapper and his label, Aftermath Entertainment, failed to pay the studio bill, which ran from April of 2009 until June of 2010. Dre had recorded at the studio for the past 10 years, allowing him to receive a lower rate for the studio’s services. Dre was supposed to settle the bill in July of 2010, but failed to do so. Dre, born Andre Young, recently settled up with the studio in regards to the outstanding balance. Reps for Paramount revealed that they had reached an amicable settlement with Dre, who is working on his album, Detox.

Floyd Mayweather Arrested In Las Vegas

(AllHipHop News) Boxer Floyd Mayweather was arrested on Friday over charges that he physically abused her and stole her cellphone during an argument.

Mayweather was in jail only for a brief period before he was released on $3,000 bail. He now faces up to five years in prison if convicted of grand larceny, reports the Associated Press. Grand larceny is the result of items stolen that are valued at $250 or more.

Mayweather is expected to appear in court on Nov. 9 in Law Vegas.

Mayweather, through his lawyer, has denied any wrongdoing.

Las Vegas Metro Police were called to the home around 5:00AM this morning after a 911 call was placed by Josie Harris, the mother of the boxing champion’s children.

Harris has requested an order of protection against Mayweather, which was granted by a judge.

In a nine-page document, Harris explained her position.

Harris wrote, “He yelled and screamed that he was going to kill me and my boyfriend. Floyd has threatened to have other people do harm to me as well and if [there] is a way I can be protected from that please help me.”

Rapper 50 Cent, a friend of Mayweather, offered his view on the matter via Twitter.

“She has a girlfriend that stays in the guesthouse that floyd is paying for her as child support that is helping fuel the situation,” said 50 Cent. “I speak to floyd every day he like my brother his babys mother did this s### befor in 2003 dragged him to court then said he didn’t hit her.”

AHH Stray News: DMX & Eminem, Kanye West Vs. Taylor Swift, Floyd

DMX has been tapped to open up for Eminem during the Epicenter 2010 Festival in California. In addition to Eminem and DMX, artists like Big Boi, Blink-182, Kiss, Papa Roach, Rise Against, Bush and 30 Seconds to Mars will hit the stage. The general fans won’t see DMX perform, unless they hold VIP tickets to the backstage area, where he will give the exclusive performance. The event, which takes place at the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, will also feature the first Southern California show with a reunited House of Pain as well. The Epicenter 2010 Festival in California takes place this Saturday (September 11th). The executive producer of the VMA’s has shot down reports that rapper Kanye West and country singer Taylor Swift will “reunite” during the awards show this Sunday (September 12th). Kanye West and Taylor Swift are slated to both attend the awards show, which will feature a performance by Kanye West. According to the VMA’s executive producer Jesse Ignjatovic, there is no chance for a duet between the pair. “I hope that we move on from it,” Ignjatovic told Billboard. “It feels like it’s time. It was a year ago.” Other performers include Eminem, B.o.B., Swizz Beatz, Mary J. Blige, Drake, Linkin Park and Justin Bieber. More details have emerged surrounding an early morning incident at the rapper’s Las Vegas mansion on Thursday. According to Floyd’s ex-girlfriend Josie Harris, the boxer allegedly pulled her by her hair, threw her on the ground and struck her in the head. According to TMZ.com, Harris then claimed Floyd began “dragging me on the floor and twisting my arm back … in attempt to try and break it.” Josie Harris claimed that the altercation started when Mayweather became upset over Harris’ new boyfriend. At press time, police have not charged Floyd Mayweather Jr. with any crime. Josie Harris is now seeking a restraining order against Mayweather.

BEST IN TEXAS BREEDING GROUND: Double A – Destroy and Rebuild

[Editor’s Note: “Drinkin'” was the track that let me know Double A had something more than the normal street MC. After meeting and talking with Double A, his knowledge of the industry, his connections and his skills all made me realize he’s Breeding Ground worthy. – Steve Raze]Ask Double A about the Dallas music game and its clear who he feels is best:  “I have a solid vision for [my] music and I feel I simply know how to put songs together better than others.”   While

much of the mainstream music coming out of the Lone-Star state is

classified as party music, Dallas-bred MC Aaron “Double A” Carter, is

seeking to add more substance, more respect, “…[essentially] I’m really

out to destroy and rebuild.”

This may not be a far-fetched goal for the self-proclaimed “Best rapper in Dallas.”  At

23 years old, Double A has collaborated with the best of the best,

released and been featured on numerous mix tapes, appeared on AllHipHop.com’s

“Heater of The Day” all the while maintaining a

solid allegiance to the streets that helped him create the solid

underground fan base that has made him an artist to watch.

Music:Double A Ft. Drake “Slow It Down”

Double A Ft. Inertia “The Untouchables” [Heater of the Day]

Double A Ft. Lil Pooh “Drinkin” [Heater of the Day]

AllHipHop.com: You moved around a lot as a child.  When did Dallas become home for you?

Double A: I was back and fourth from Houston to Kansas City, Missouri but I would say that Dallas became my home back in 1994.

AllHipHop.com: What do you feel sets you apart the most from other artists in your position?

Double A: I think it’s

the fact that I actually know what I’m doing with the art form. I know

how to paint a vivid picture in my songs and I listen to all kinds of music

so I’m not just stuck in one box or lane. I have a solid vision for

music and I feel [that] I simply know how to put songs together better

than others.

AllHipHop.com The karaoke machine played a huge roll in your start in the game.  Did you aspire to rap before your 15th birthday or was this a talent you stumbled upon?

Double A: I’ve always

had a passion for the art form. It was kind of like therapy for me and,

it was a way for me to be creative in a positive way.

AllHipHop.com:When did you decide to make music your career?

Double A: When I was 15

I really made up my mind that I could go at this game full throttle.

Myself, Das Mobster and Lil Pooh started a label called NST (Nauf Side

Team) and we just started feeding the streets with mixtape after mixtape. We started as one group but, as the years passed, we started to

focus on separate obligations and I was left alone by myself to carry

the brand name. I continued and my cousin, J Staccs, [along with] Young

Fava of Real Money, Ent. gave me a shot to actually carry my brand as a

whole.  The rest is history.

AllHipHop.com Who were some are some of your primary musical influences growing up?

Double A: I would say 2pac, Jay-Z, Biggie, UGK, Marvin Gaye, and B.B. King.

The way that they all put music together and let the beat dictate what

direction they should go on a song is epic. They also know how to follow

the emotion of the song [while] taking control of the overall concept

of the beat.

AllHipHop.com: You

have collaborated with quite a few big names, most notably, Drake on

“Asthma Team” and “Slow Down.”  How did that connection start?

Double A: My producers came at me wit that collaboration.  Those

were mixtape records. One day myself and the homie [Drake] will get in

the lab together. The connections are in place; we just have to get it

done. It is coming soon, I can promise you that!

AllHipHop.com: Many artists have gravitated towards social media.  How has Twitter, Myspace and YouTube helped you as an artist?

Double A: It has actually put the face with the music so the general public can better identify with me as an artist.  Everywhere

I go I have the cameras with me so that the fans and supporters can

experience the moment with me. I think the Internet and behind the

scenes footage gives the people more of a connection with me and [allows

them to see] what I do when I’m in their city.

AllHipHop.com: You seem to be a supporter of a few Dallas artists.  How do you think Dallas music has impacted the Hip-Hop scene as of late?

Double A: I’m really

not a strong supporter of the artists that we have in Dallas. There are

only a few that I respect, really will support and listen to their

music. [Artists like] Ray Paul, Inertia, Ace Mitch, B Hardy, Chase Pat,

Fat B, Young Nino, Mr. Pookie, Mr. Lucci, Douski G, and Big Chief.  Everybody

else is just in the way of progress. I don’t really see classic

material out of a lot of the artists because they have already shot

themselves in the foot because of the way they have entered the game.

So, I don’t support the current Dallas movement that is occurring right

now. I support the new movement of rappers in the city that can actually

have longevity. I just feel it is time for something completely new

and I feel I can lead that movement. I have full support of the streets

because that is how most of the rappers and DJ’s in my city know me.  Every city I go to it seems like [Dallas is] the laughing stock of the music industry.  At the same time, everybody comes here to throw parties and make money.  I’m

really out to destroy and rebuild, start a whole new wave of MC’s, and

give people a fair chance without being forced to make dance or club

records to get some kind of recognition. That is why I call myself “The

Best Rapper From Dallas” so I can raise the bar and get people to raise the stakes.

AllHipHop.com: You’ve had quite a few songs make “Heater of the Day” on AllHipHop.com.  Tell us how “The Untouchables” came about.

Double A: First off,

shout out to Baby Boi, Inertia and the whole G4 family for all their

support and loyalty. I received a beat from my producer, Legacy

Beats, and he told me a couple of days prior that he had an epic beat

that he just finished. I heard the record and the beat and I went in.  I felt Inertia, who is a Play-N-Skillz Artist, would compliment the beat and plus, [the collaboration] has been long overdue.  So, I sent him the record and he went in on it and history was made. At the end of the day, that record was so powerful that it went from being just a song and turned into The Untouchable Mixtape.  Inertia and I are simply out to destroy and rebuild.

AllHipHop.com: You’ve

released and have been featured on several mix tapes.  Do you have one

tape in particular that speaks to who you are as an artist?

Double A: I would say the At the Crib 27 mixtape with DJ Slikk.  DJ

Slikk was one of the first DJ’s to not politic, just accept my craft

for what it was and give me one of my first full length mixtape

features. During this time DJ’s in my city didn’t want to do tapes with

me because they didn’t think it would have an impact due to the style of

music my city was used to at the time. DJ Slikk took a chance on me and

we made history together. That tape really gave me a chance to show

that I can give a full body of work that you can enjoy and something

that will keep your interest for sixty-plus minutes.

“I’m most

proud of just being able to have people’s attention and ears on a

worldwide level instead of just a regional radius. The connections that

I’ve made in this game have been a life changing experience.”

AllHipHop.com: To date, what are you most proud of musically?

Double A: I’m most

proud of just being able to have people’s attention and ears on a

worldwide level instead of just a regional radius. The connections that

I’ve made in this game have been a life changing experience. I’m just

proud to be able to put out consistent material that the streets and my

peers can enjoy.

AllHipHop.com: With

the entire buzz you’ve created independently, have you thought about

remaining an independent artist or are you eager to sign with a major

label?

Double A: A major label is the main focus because at the end of the day, if you want to be a big artist you need that big push.  You can only do so much independently and there is only so far you can go.  I

want to be the best to ever do it or at least be mentioned in that

select few. I have five major label offers but I just want to have more

leverage the next time I go into one of those meetings and have the

whole building behind me. My priority is to have my buzz so big that the

major labels have no choice but to make my projects a main priority.

AllHipHop.com: What projects do you have coming up that we should look out for?

Double A: My Destroy N Rebuild Mix tape with Slip N Slide DJ Shaiimillz, the Something Epic Mix tape with DJ Holiday, my street album The Moment and the sequel, Still In The Moment.  I also have

the Rags to Riches Tour coming up with Slip N Slide DJ Sinafold and

their new artist, Mike Bless. When all is said and done, I plan on

re-writing history with music. As long as the streets allow and I have a

demand to create epic material then I will be here.  My

label, NST, which includes: Lil Pooh, H-Dot, KWill, 1word, and Pablo C,

and I will do our part to keep Hip-Hop healthy and alive.
