Rodney ‘Darkchild’ Jerkins –“R&B is on its Way Back!”

The true definition of a super producer,

Rodney ‘Darkchild’ Jerkins is the man behind some of the biggest

R&B songs of the last decade. Having produced hit singles for the

likes of Michael and Janet Jackson, Destiny’s Child, Jennifer Lopez,

Mary J. Blige, Brandy and The Pussycat Dolls to name just a few, the

industry veteran can boast more production credits and a far more impressive

resume than his mere 32 years would suggest. With his latest effort,

pop sensation Lady Gaga’s new Beyoncé-assisted single ‘Telephone,’

already climbing up the charts ahead of its official release, he seems

to be starting this decade with just as much promise as he did the last.

      Having

spoken with Darkchild as he was putting the finishing touches on ‘Telephone’

for Gaga, who he praises for her “character” and writing abilities,

his incredible knowledge of the music industry and love of creative

experimentalism became immediately clear. It really is no wonder why

this year seems destined to mark yet another chapter in his already

impressive success story. “R&B is on its way back,” proclaims

Jerkins passionately, his excitement clearly fueled by the plethora

of the pioneering projects that he is currently working on. The genre

is certainly taking a new direction and Darkchild’s musically diverse

productions will undoubtedly play a major role in its development.

      When

asked what he has learned from his experience working as a producer over

the past 15 years in the industry, he explains that he has learnt the

importance of creating well-rounded productions. “I learned that at

the end of the day the one thing that matters is the song,” he

elaborates. “It’s not about a beat. We have a lot of beats and it’s

easy to go in there and make a beat, especially now because of the technology.”

After all, as he quite correctly points out “beats don’t sell, songs

do.” Darkchild has dedicated his career so far to attempting to make

“real songs and songs that have to stand the test of time.” In fact,

rewind the clock back about ten years and it becomes immediately clear

exactly why some of his productions have become R&B classics. Jerkins

was already establishing himself as an innovative and experimental young

producer but few realized just how much of a mark he would leave on

the industry over the coming decade.

      In

1999, inspired by music he had heard in a club while working with the

Spice Girls in Europe, he created Destiny’s Child’s international

cross-over breakthrough hit. ‘Say My Name’ incorporated traditional

R&B elements with the syncopated beats of 2-Step Garage, popularized

in the UK at the turn of the millennium by artists like Artful Dodger

and Craig David. After the group initially expressed their dislike of

the original erratic, 104bpm 2-Step beat, Darkchild returned to the

lab to rework the track but insisted on staying true to his original

concept, at least to an extent. “The day that I fixed the song, I

listened to it and was like ‘they were right, that beat is whack!

What am I doing? What was I thinking?’” he recalls. “Then I changed

it and flipped it into 72bpm, created a whole new track and it became

a smash.”

      ‘Say

My Name’ soon went from being a cut that very nearly didn’t make

the final tracklist for The Writing’s

on the Wall to arguably the quintessential Destiny’s Child anthem,

even winning two Grammy awards in 2001. It has since been described

by Beyoncé as an “amazing, timeless R&B record” and “one

of the best songs we ever had.” Jerkins explains fondly that the track

is his “favorite still out of everything because what I’d say to

any producer or songwriter is never give up on something that you believe

in. If I hadn’t have listened to myself I wouldn’t have won a Grammy

for that song.”

      A

pioneer in the use of concept songs in modern R&B, Jerkins understands

the importance of telling a story and maintaining a plotline within

his songs, an art that sadly seems to be on a decline in the urban music

industry today. He also feels that there are not enough of these collaborative

‘event records,’ as there is not enough competition in the scene

at the moment. “It’s only one artist emerging every year, like last

year was Lil Wayne’s year and this year is going to be Drake’s year.

It’s not enough!” he explains passionately. “There should be no

reason why Beyoncé is competing with Beyoncé.” He then reflects

with a hint of nostalgia, “What happened to the day when you had Run

DMC and LL Cool J, two artists running it at the same time?”

      Interestingly,

Darkchild was actually the man behind probably the most-successful ‘event

record’ in R&B history. A co-production between himself and

Dallas Austin, ‘The Boy Is Mine’ pitted R&B stars Brandy and

Monica against one another in a fictitious love triangle, exploiting

media assumptions of a rivalry between the two artists. The concept,

which seemed to capture the imagination of a whole generation, ensured

that the 1998 release was a great commercial and critical success. “We

need more of that with this generation now,” Jerkins suggests, before

adding, “It has to mean something though. If you’re going to have

a [release] with two people on the same record, then there needs to

be an event.” As he then adds, even Beyoncé and Shakira weren’t

quite able to achieve that with their 2007 collaboration ‘Beautiful

Liar.’ “It didn’t mean anything; it was just a record that they

both just jumped on,” he explains. “Two big, iconic stars jumping

on a song and it wasn’t a crazy smash, it wasn’t a concept that

everyone was like ‘whoa!’”

      According

to Darkchild, the Hip-Hop scene could also benefit greatly from more

collaborative event records, especially with the beef-culture in the

game today. “Think of all the Hip-Hop artists that are going at it,

they’re beefing, you know? You’ve got 50 Cent and Fat Joe; they’re

just beefing back and forth, back and forth,” he elaborates. “Get

on a record together and do it, then we’d really be able to tell who

wins.” He also feels that many features on Hip-Hop records tend to

lack any real meaning and therefore fail to enhance the song. “To

have somebody just rap on someone’s album as a feature is just pointless

to me,” he adds. “If you’re going to do that then make the best

of it. That’s all I’m saying, make it into something special.”

Making sure that he practices what he is preaching, Darkchild did confirm

that he currently has one in the pipeline himself, stating “I’m

working on Janet Jackson’s album and I’m planning on creating an

event record. We’re working on something right now.”

      The

project is just one of many that Jerkins is currently working on, having

to maintain a balance between his productions and developing his venture

Darkchild Records. “I think if you have a production company, the

next level should be your own record company,” he explains, displaying

his signature ambition and entrepreneurial nature. “If you can run

a successful production company, you should be able to take some of

what you’ve learned from that and turn it to a record company.”

Darkchild is currently doing just that but is taking his time to develop

it properly rather than rushing into anything. “I’m in no rush to

just sign a bunch of artists tomorrow. I want to make sure I get the

right artists,” he elaborates, before adding that his priority artist

Verse Simmonds is “the right artist for me.”

      Jerkins

passionately describes Verse as a “triple threat,” explaining that

he was first attracted to his songwriting abilities and his unique sound.

Having grown up in the Virgin Islands, Simmonds describes his signature

blend of traditional R&B with a Caribbean flavor as ‘Island B.’

His infectious new single ‘America,’ – a Darkchild production featuring

Pitbull – is the lead single from his forthcoming debut album Stories

of a Bachelor, which is scheduled for release this summer on Darkchild/Interscope.

With Verse’s Island B sound beginning to make some waves in the industry,

2010 should prove a busy year for Jerkins and Darkchild Records. “I’m

constantly working. I’m in the studio almost every day with different

artists. I’m just trying to stay focused on all of the music that

I’m working on,” he explains. “I’m just focused. I want my 2010

to be a great year.”

      With

everything he has already achieved, you would think that Darkchild would

be content with his success in R&B so far. He reveals, however,

that he “won’t be happy until [he has] a chart-topping Hip-Hop record.”

When asked about his thoughts on the scene today, he answers “I like

where it’s at, but I think it’s going to have to go back to real

Hip-Hop, you know like Nas, the Illmatic

album. When it gets back to that place, I think people will be excited

again.” In fact he also expresses his desire to work with the Queens

veteran. “I think I would want to work with Nas if I could. I like

Lil Wayne too; I’m a fan of Lil Wayne.” He then jokes, “It doesn’t

matter because once I do one; they’re all going to come anyway.”

So, is a chart-topping Darkchild Hip-Hop production really on the horizon?

Jerkins believes it may well be; “I want it!” he exclaims before

adding an open invitation to the genre’s finest.  “Any Hip-Hop

people, I’m here and ready for a number one, so you need to get at

me! I can almost taste it.”

Eight Teens Shot After Waka Flocka Concert; Police Say Rappers May Have Incited Violence

(AllHipHop News) Eight teenagers were shot after a performance by Atlanta rapper Waka Flocka Flames late Friday evening (March 5) in Gary, Indiana.

Waka Flocka Flames performed at the World of Skates skating rink. During the event, a fight broke out, prompting security to order all patrons to leave the venue. As 200 teens waited in the parking lot, a gunman or gunmen opened fire on 200 teenagers who were waiting for their rides.

“Our kids are kids. “They’re teenagers that came to a venue and saw a rapper perform and then went home. As far as I’m concerned, my kids have nothing to do with what was going on,” World of Skates manager James Sisson told the Post-Tribune.

The wounded teens were taken to St. Catherine Hospital, Methodist Hospitals and Saint Margaret Mercy in Hammond, Ind, where they were treated for non-life threatening wounds.

Police accused Waka Flocka’s hype man of inciting the crowd by pitting the “East side” against the “West side,” which may have started the fight Police Cmdr. Michael Mallett told the Post-Tribune. “The kids have separated themselves into east and west sides,” Mallet said. “They’ve been doing it for many years now, but it’s gotten worse, especially when you have entertainers making references to East Side vs. West Side. The youth in our community have taken it to heart.” No arrests have been made as of press time.

Hip-Hop Rumors: D’Angelo Gets Arrested For Blow Attempt, Bone Thugs Arrested? Waka Flocka Show Shot Up!

All content within this section is pure rumor and generally have no factual info outside of what the streets have whispered in our ear. Read on.

D’ANGELO GETS BUSTED

Damn D! It’s like this, huh? As us fan await his return, the police have another thing in mind. D’Angelo was arrested for soliciting a police woman for prostitution. According to reports, D was driving his struck and offered an undercover $40 for a blow. D’s  not hurting for money, but he may be hurting for something else. Dude was driving an ill Range Rover and had $12,000 in it when he was arrested. They say the thought it was a prostitute. EH, there is something strange about this. D’Angelo should still be good with the ladies. He was arrested Saturday at about 2:30 am.PULL IT TOGETHER, BRO! WE NEED THE MUSIC, NOT THIS!

GURU’S NEPHEW IS ON THE LIST

Peep this. I got it sent from the AHH staff. This Guru situation is getting reallllllly real. I am going to give you the abridged version, since I am sure this will be in the news. Apparently, Guru’s nephew came to NYC to go on the livefromheadqcourterz radio show. Well, you know about Justin Elam-Ruff…the dude that made the video about Guru. ANYWAY, he gets escorted to see Guru, his uncle…basically he bumrushes the hospital. And according to the, livefromheadqcourterz blog, Guru IS still in a coma…not sure if that’s confirmed. Why? There are two lists at the hospital, they say. One list is for approved guests and the second lists is for guests that MAY NOT see Guru. Guess what list Justin was on. That’s right…the second list.

Here is Statik Selektah on the situation.

BONE THUGS ARRESTED?

I heard there was a “Welcome Home Show” for Bone-Thugs-N-Harmony the other day. They reportedly came home to Cleveland to the peoples’ delight…and the cops. When they got there, it seemed that some gangs were being active and a fight broke out. Police pepper sprayed everybody, I was told. It appeared to a source of mine that Wish Bone was in handcuffs and possibly arrested. While Layzie Bone looked on it appeared they sprayed them too. I am hearing that a rapper that used to be cool Layzie Bone and his Mo Thugs Records now has a beef. The concert never went down, from what I understand. So, this is where it goes, eh? Wackness upon wackness!

WAKA FLOCKA’S SHOW GETS FLAMED UP

Jeez! I know Wocka Flocka is crunk, but this is crazy. Eight teenagers were straight up shot at a concert for Mr. Flocka. The police are blaming Waka’s hypeman for making two warring sides of Gary, Indiana fight each others. Waka never even hit the stage. Kids ranging from age 14 to age 18 were shot. Hmmmmmm….maybe some of them should not have been allowed to go to this event in the first place. Step your parenting game up. But person that did the shooting was outside the venue and had a rifle. Nobody was killed, thankfully.

EPIC FAIL OF THE DAY

Look at these shoes! LOL! They look like something Lady Gaga would wear.

D’ANGELO, WE LOVE YOU!!!

They keep us talking, but if we stop talking about them then they should worry!

DJ Premier Speaks on Guru, Clarifies Previous Alleged Statements

After several back and forth statements from Solar and the Elam family, DJ Premier recently revealed his feelings regarding his old partner Guru and the controversy surrounding him.

On his HeadQCourterz radio show last night (March 5), Premier advised that he had previously made no official statements on Guru’s situation, despite numerous quotes over the past week carrying his name.

“First of all anyone that’s been seeing any statements from me, it’s all false,” Premier explained. “If it wasn’t told to someone directly, it’s not coming from me. I have never made a statement until today, and I will not make a statement until all the facts are given from the proper people. And the proper people are not giving the facts, so there’s nothing to say until we get that.”

Producer Solar broke the news on Tuesday (March 2) that his rhyme partner Guru (Keith Elam) had successful surgery, and was expected to make a complete recovery from a massive heart attack.

A statement purported to be from Guru himself soon followed, stating that Solar is “the only person who has accurate info on my situation.”

On Thursday (March 4), Guru’s nephew Justin Nicholas-Elam Ruff accused Solar of lying about Guru’s present condition, and using legal means to prevent the rapper’s family from seeing him.

That allegation was flatly denied by Solar the following day, who told AllHipHop.com that Guru’s brother, sister, and niece have been visiting him regularly.

“Guru’s family dynamic and who he wants to look out for his interests is Guru’s business and best left to Guru to discuss. I will state that Guru wanted this matter to be kept private to protect his loved ones and fans from this ordeal and from it becoming a circus, which it is becoming.”

DJ Premier did not address any of Solar’s statements directly, but made it clear his allegiance was with Guru’s nephew, whom he praised for speaking out about the situation.

“Shout out to Justin Ruff, a true soldier and a warrior that took on his own initiative to truly let m############ know evil lurks in Guru’s life still, and that s### will cease eventually. ‘Cause God don’t like ugly like they say, and love always conquers the devil.”

The legendary producer also added that his only concern is seeing his former collaborator back on his feet and healthy.

“It’s not about me it’s him, and the Gangstarr legacy,” he said. “Without him there’s no me, and without me there’s no him. Again, Guru we love you my G, stay strong my dude.”

At press time, Guru has released no further personal statements since Wednesday.

Knockout Nation: Darchinyan Tonight! Mayweather Clowns Mosley, Bradley Calls Out Pacquiao, Spinks, Holyfield-Tyson 3?! Hopkins Speaks On Monzon Mythical Matchup

Vic Darchinyan Headlines Showtime Card

Outspoken knockout specialist Vic Darchinyan looks to continue to put pressure on Nonito Donaire for a rematch with a showcase bout tonight against Rodrigo Guerrero.

Darchinyan has been simmering for a return bout with Donaire since being on the wrong side of a knockout of the year candidate back in 2007. Following the bout, Darchinyan went on an impressive run of 5-1-1, uniting the super flyweight belts with KO’s over Dmitry Kirillov, Cristian Mijares, and Jorge Arce. Now after a failed experiment at bantamweight, Darchinyan is back at super flyweight to defend his belts.

Donaire was never able to capitalize on the momentum of his Darchinyan KO, despite jumping ship from Gary Shaw’s stable to Bob Arum’s Top Rank. He’s won 5 bouts since his big win, with most being confined to quiet PPVs.

“He had luck the first time, and he knows it. He doesn’t want to fight me. I’ve heard Showtime has offered him three times the money he’d get from anyone else, and that he won’t take it,” Darchinyan boasted at a recent press conference. “That says he doesn’t want the fight. I want to prove how strong I am. Boxing is all about patience, I’ve learned, not rushing the big punches. Look at my last fight. I wait my time, and hit. People love my style. People come to my fights from Armenia, a 15-hour flight, and they keep coming. I will show what I always do, with the speed, skill and power. I will knock [Guerrero] out.”

Darchinyan’s last fight was a devastating 2nd round KO of Tomas Rojas in December 2009.

Bob Arum is also not one to mince words, and flat-out denied Darchinyan’s claims that he’s being ducked.

“The problem with boxing is that everyone talks too much and nobody reflects on what they say. We’re ready to do the fight,” he explained. “For the kid to say Donaire is ducking him is absurd. Let’s see what numbers Showtime is offering us to telecast the fight, sit down and discuss everything, and see where we are. That’s how you start.”

If Vic takes out Guerrero in impressive fashion (which he should), expect a Donaire-Darchinyan rematch before the end of 2010. It’s the bout that makes the most sense for each fighter, financially and legacy-wise.

Darchinyan’s fight airs tonight on Showtime at 9PM.

Mayweather Getting the Better of Mosley Outside the Ring

While fight night may be an entirely different story, Floyd Mayweather has remained one step ahead of Shane Mosley in the verbal jab department on their recent press tour stops.

The normally reserved Mosley has been taken out of his element trying to retaliate against Floyd’s jabs on everything from Shane’s suit, recent divorce, and admitted past use of steroids.

As usual, it was all fun and games and led to the expected “scuffle” when the two future Hall of Famers had their faceoff.

But as we all know, the fight is won with fists, and not words. On Mayweather’s end, he believes his recent antics have gotten him a definitive mental edge over Mosley. The welterweight champ dismissed this notion, revealing his animosity will only be reserved for fight night.

“We’ll dislike each other before May 1. And actually, I’m not even sure I dislike him now,” Mosley told the Associated Press. “But after May 1, we won’t dislike each other unless we have to fight again.”

So far the fight is getting a lot of mainstream press, even eclipsing next week’s Pacquiao-Clottey fight. Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer is so confident in the pair’s box office ability that he proclaimed a record 3 million PPVs could be sold.

“These fights come along once in a lifetime and this is going to be one of the most promoted fights in the history of the sport,” Schaefer explained. ‘We are here to set new records and set new standards. We have NASCAR-like sponsors. This is going to be the most promoted fight in the history of the sport.”

Bradley Not Impressed By Pacquiao-Clottey

Junior welterweight champion Timothy Bradley is anxious for a showdown with the best boxers in and around his weight class. And his first target is the man considered by many the #1 fighter in the sport, Manny Pacquiao.

In the March issue of RING Magazine, Bradley derided Pacquiao’s selection of Joshua Clottey as an opponent, questioning why the Filipino icon is taking time to fight an opponent coming off a loss.

“It’s not even about the money. I want to fight the best fighter in the world and I want to see if I can beat him.  Manny is human just like I am,” Bradley said. “All I ask is an opportunity. I worked my butt off to get to the number-one spot just to fight him. I don’t want to see Joshua Clottey and Pacquiao. It’s a joke. Miguel Cotto beat Clottey and Pacquiao crushed Cotto. So what do you think Pacquiao will do to Clottey?”

Bradley also had words for Floyd Mayweather. Immediately following the collapse of the Mayweather-Pacquiao bout, there was speculation that Bradley was an option before the Mosley bout was secured.

“It’s a matter of time that the guys who don’t want to fight me will one day fight me. If Floyd Mayweather doesn’t retire before I fight him, I’ll be the first man to beat him. I don’t want to be cocky; I’m just being real.”

You have to admire Bradley’s determination. Unfortunately, those two guys will certainly not look his way anytime soon. However, that doesn’t mean Bradley doesn’t have exciting matchups in his own division. Guys like Amir Khan, Paulie Malignaggi, and possibly Edwin Valero moving up in weight are all excellent matchups.

In my opinion, the young champ should at least stick to junior welterweight for the next year and a half before considering a move up to welterweight.

Holyfield Shoots Down Rumor of Tyson Rubbermatch

Over the past several days, rumors spread those former champions Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield were in talks for third match.

Their two respective bouts in 1996 and 1997 were blockbusters and record-setting PPVs. Holyfield shocked the world with an upset TKO in the first bout, and won by disqualification in the rematch following Tyson savagely biting off his ear.

Evander Holyfield gave a statement to the Las Vegas Review Journal advising that there hasn’t been any talks, but he’ll still continue to chase his dream of winning the heavyweight title for a 5th time.

“No one’s presented anything to me,” Holyfield confirmed. “I hear things about Tyson all the time. But he keeps saying he’s through with boxing, and me, I’ve moved on. I’m trying to win a championship and Tyson doesn’t have a belt. Right now, it’s a joke.”

Tyson and Holyfield were last seen together on Oprah reconciling in their first sit-down since the infamous 1997 ear biting rematch.

Cory Spinks Returns on March 26

Resilient slickster Cory Spinks (37-5, 11 KOs) will defend his IBF junior middleweight title later this month against another veteran in Cornelius “K’9” Bundrage (29-4, 17 KOs).

After losing the welterweight title via KO to Zab Judah back in 2005, Spinks has had many up and downs personally and professionally. That same year, his now ex-wife Kimberly Calvin was charged with domestic assault for stabbing him in the shoulder and abdomen.

Spinks won the IBF junior middleweight title in 2006 against Roman Karmazin. But he then lost a close decision to then middleweight champ Jermain Taylor in 2007, and dropped his IBF belt in 2007 with another hometown loss, this time to Verno Phillips.

Spinks found redemption last year, when he spoiled what was supposed to be a changing of the guard bout versus a young St. Louis fighter in Deandre Latimore. After getting dropped badly and nearly stopped in the first round, Spinks abandoned his usual style and fought Latimore tooth and nail in the trenches. Spinks’ courageous stand would earn him a split decision win and a new reign as IBF junior middleweight champ.

If Spinks, who’s been out of the ring since March 2009, hasn’t slipped any further, he should boxed circles around the powerful but limited 36 year old Bundrage, who’s lost to the best fighters on his resume (Steve Forbes, Sechew Powell, Joel Julio, and Kassim Ouma).

Mythical Matchup of the Week: Bernard Hopkins vs. Carlos Monzon

The middleweight division is of the blue-collar class. Unlike the flashiness seen in many fighters of its fellow original weight class, the welterweight division, middleweight champs are almost always no-nonsense men.

Through the decades, legends like Bob Fitzsimmons, Stanley Ketchel, Dick Tiger, and Harry Greb epitomized the rough and tumble demeanor of the elite middleweights.

Two notable pugilists from that cloth are the late Carlos Monzon and Bernard Hopkins.

Monzon’s career began unassumingly in 1963, with him going 16-3 over his first 19 bouts. It wasn’t until 1970 that he hit the national radar by breaking down a game Nino Benvenuti over 12 rounds to win the WBC and WBA titles. He annihilated Benvenuti in a 1971 rematch, this time in only 3 rounds.

The dominance continued. Monzon became the second man to stop Emile Griffith, another Hall of Famer, in 1971. The rematch saw Griffith lose a clear decision.

All-time great welterweight Jose Napoles could do no better, receiving a thorough beating in 1974 before retiring in his corner. Monzon would fight on until 1977, beating his young rival Rodrigo Valdez twice before retiring with a final record of 87-3-9, 59 KOs. For years, he held the middleweight record of defenses at 14.

A notorious woman-beater, Monzon received an 11-year sentence in 1988 after murdering his wife by throwing her off a balcony. He was killed in a 1995 car crash on his way back to jail following an approved weekend furlough with family. Speculation persists that the crash may have been suicide.

Hopkins, still active at an astounding 45 years old, is the fighter who broke Monzon’s record by posting 20 defenses, and being the oldest man ever to hold the title.

Hopkins served 5 years in prison on robbery charges, and picked up boxing upon his release in 1988. Like Monzon he struggled early, losing his first bout at light-heavyweight.

He then reeled off 22 straight victories before losing a competitive unanimous decision to Roy Jones in 1993 in his first title attempt.

He would not lose again for 12 years.

In 1994, Hopkins would finally win a title by KO’ing Segundo Mercado to win the IBF belt. He made 13 defenses through 2001 when he achieved his signature win, a dominant 12th round TKO over Felix Trinidad at Madison Square Garden.

He made 7 defenses before losing a highly controversial decision to Jermain Taylor in 2005. Since then, Hopkins has gone on to move up and win the light-heavyweight championship.

The high pedigree of both Monzon and Hopkins is without question. Monzon was a calm assassin, controlling his opponents from a distance with a long, wiry jab. From there, he rained home an extremely accurate and long straight right hand. When fighters did breach the outside distance, Monzon had a stunning right uppercut. There was no flash with Monzon, just precision punching.

In his younger days, Hopkins was very aggressive and loved to carve up fighters in the trenches. Hopkins was equally adept at out brawling his foes on the inside and forcing boxers there by countering them. Before age slowed him, Hopkins was a very active puncher and overwhelmed many opponents into brutal KOs.

Hopkins’ mission will be to continually avoid Monzon’s deadly jab-straight right combo, and force a contest of wills up-close. Hopkins is the superior in-fighter, and Monzon would be at a disadvantage trading shots with the faster Hopkins.

I don’t see a knockout for either man, but Hopkins would not be deterred by Monzon’s punching power. Hopkins is usually trouble immensely by speed, which Monzon doesn’t possess on his shots despite their amazing accuracy.

Assuming we have  a lenient ref, Monzon would likely being the man constantly in retreat and fighting while pinned on the ropes by Hopkins, who matches up very well physically at 6’1.

It would be close, but I feel a younger Hopkins (circa ’97-’03), would outwork and wear down Monzon in the later rounds for a close but clear decision. There would be several very close nip and tuck early and middle rounds.

When I spoke with Bernard earlier this week to hear his opinion, he argued that he would not only beat Monzon, but stop him.

“I think Carlos Monzon is a straight up fighter, tall fighter that can be broken down to the body,” Hopkins told Knockout Nation is his upcoming exclusive interview. “I would’ve knocked him out. I see myself beating him based on breaking him down with my vicious body attack. And taking him out of there with speed, accuracy, and like I said the body shots. [It would be] the left hook to the liver like I hit Oscar [De La Hoya] with.”

Swedish Rapper Dave Monopoly Sentenced For Pedestrian Killing

(AllHipHop News) An argument with a pedestrian in Los Angeles has resulted in prison time for Swedish rapper Dave Monopoly.

The 35-year-old entertainer (born David Moses Jassy) was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison on Thursday (March 4) for second-degree murder and other crimes. The court ruling concluded a case that stemmed from a heated encounter Jassy had with 55-year-old John Osnes in 2008. According to prosecutors, Los Angeles-based jazz pianist banged on the hood of Jassy’s rented SUV when it stopped inside a crosswalk in Los Angeles.

The confrontation turned violent, according to authorities, as Jassy punched Osnes in the face, delivered a “brutal kick” to his head when the activist bent down to pick up his glasses and ran over him as he drove away. The confrontation proved fatal for Osnes, who died in November 2008.

Jassy, who was convicted in February of second-degree murder and assault and battery, testified that he never intended to hurt Osnes. According to the rapper, he was defending himself and his girlfriend after Osnes banged on the hood of the SUV. Fearing for his life, Jassy stated he got out of the SUV in order to see what happened to SUV. In his eyes, Jassy believed the encounter with Osnes was “going to be an argument, not a fight.”

Although witnesses had tried to stop him, police stated that Jassy drove away from the scene of the incident. The rapper was eventually arrested after authorities traced him through the rented SUV’s license plate.

During the course of the trial, Jassy became emotional as he cried when telling the court he did not know Osnes had died until police informed him the following day.

Despite the convictions, Jassy was acquitted of two other counts, including assault with a deadly weapon. The entertainer claimed to have sung with and written several songs for High School Musical star Ashley Tisdale as well as worked with Swedish, German and other international pop artists.

J-Kwon Alive and Well; Rapper Weighs in on Disappearance Claims from Former Record Label

(AllHipHop News) Reports of J-Kwon being missing are false.

The rapper spoke on the reaction generated from claims of his alleged disappearance, which was reportedly made public on Wednesday (March 3) by his former record label, Gracie Productions. The label revealed that J-Kwon had disappeared for nearly 30 days and requested help in locating the rapper.

News of the rapper’s disappearance caused fans and supporters to make calls, e-mails and prayer requests for the entertainer’s safe return.

Despite speculation over his status, the J-Kwon admitted he was unaware of what was going on until he received calls from family and friends several hours after the alleged disappearance. It was at that point the St. Louis native and his manger, Keith Matthews took steps to defuse the situation. The pair maintain the actions of claiming J-Kwon’s disappearance were completely independent and did not involve them.

“When we were contacted of that situation, we were reaching out to fans and other people that support J-Kwon to let them know it is not real,” Matthews said a statement. “It did not have anything to do with us, it did not come from our camp.”

According to J-Kwon, the situation was unnecessarily elevated to a level it should not have been.

“Things get taken out of hand. On top of that, there are other families that are really missing people and my heart goes out to them. I’m not trying to promote anything,” the rapper added. “I just prayed about it and moved on.”

In addition to letting family, friends and fans he was doing “just fine,” J-Kwon notified the St. Louis police department about the situation as well as clear him of any wrongdoing.

As for the motivation behind Gracie Productions’ announcement, Matthews believes the action may have stemmed from a business situation involving J-Kwon and Gracie Productions.

“We did a non-exclusive situation with them and then that was it. We started off with a good relationship,” Matthews said. “I think it was a miscommunication when it came to them taking actions on their own. I do not know why they did not reach out to us or to me to do something like that. I was shocked that they did not reach out to me or call someone. They have not returned any phone calls or e-mails, not the management or anyone.”

Although he may not know the real reason behind Gracie Production’s announcement, Matthews is quick to say the disappearance had nothing to do with attracting attention for J-Kwon. “At the end of the day, J-Kwon was successful in his career,” stated Matthews “He is an established artist. It did not do anything to enhance his career because he has a good career. There was no reason for them to do that.”

Putting the ordeal behind him, J-Kwon is reportedly continuing work with his Kwon for Kids organization as well as pursuing new projects and building his company, Hood Hop Music, which signed a new pop artist and fellow entertainers Gino Green and SOC.

Prior to the disappearance situation, Gracie Productions mentioned that J-Kwon was preparing to release a new self-titled album this month.

CHANCE ENCOUNTERS

Chance hit me with these rumors yesterday…my bad!

KANYE CHECKS IN

Have you been wondering what’s been going on in that mind of Kanye’s???  Well he checked in yesterday and spoke on creating art, how his life has changed since College Dropout, relating to Alexander McQueen and a bunch of other stuff.  It’s a long read but it’s good…a few jewels in here…especially about the pyramids (you’ll see):

“I’m on the plane listening to [his 2004 debut LP] The College Dropout,” the post reads in part. “It brings back so many memories.” He then talks about the deaths in his family since that time, and the early days of his career. “We were the underdogs,” he continues. “I never feel like I’m not the underdog. I never felt completely comfortable. I’m tormented by the need to create. With the loss of McQueen I feel like we lost one of the faces of modern creativity’s Mount Rushmore. … Maybe McQueen felt his job was done because his last collection was the greatest of the decade. We are all so hurt. I know we’re selfish because he brought us so much joy and inspiration. I know how it feels when the night demons come. We can’t let them control our hands and feet. … I was blessed with the opportunity to bring my and others dreams to life. It’s like performing magic or something. It’s surreal. We bring the unrealistic to reality. … When I wake up in the morning and brush my teeth and look in the mirror it’s like I see Michael [Jackson, presumably] and my mom and Malcolm [X, presumably] … Who’s that African in the background Mom? Oh, he created the original layouts for the pyramids, but he was written out of the history books and his MTV award was given to ‘Aliens.’ … Everything is an opinion. The way you dress is an expression of your opinion. Your religious beliefs are your opinion. The music you turn up loud is your opinion. For most people it’s easier to just agree. For me the hardest thing is to ‘just’ agree and that is what sparks creativity. The feeling that something can be better, the feeling that something’s missing, the feeling that something’s needed.”
