Black History Month Fashion Tribute: Kanye West

Love him or hate him, Kanye West‘s keen fashion sense has made him a style icon.

The rapper/fashion designer is fun, fearless and unpredictable with his ensembles.

You never know if he’s going to step out in some fresh sneakers and a white tee, all black, or statement making furs.

He may have created some signature looks, but he clearly draws inspiration from many sources and never locks in a particular image. He has been the preppy nerd, the rocker, the hip-hop mogul and more.

From the denim shirt to classic Timberland boots, Kanye helped set, re-invent and popularize many key trends.

He launched the highly sought after “Air Yeezy” last year, his hit designer collaboration sneaker with Louis Vuitton, the Goyard “Robot Face” backpack, and is the face of BAPE‘s spring 2010 collection.

Kanye keeps it fresh by mixing up streetwear with high fashion luxuries, and then causes a stir here and there by throwing in some outrageous looks.

“It’s funny to me when fashion bloggers down our outfits and then super jock outlandish sh*t on the runway, but then they dress mad prude and don’t live fashion. We live it!!!”-Kanye West

Check out Kanye showing off yet another one of his fashion related skills – Here is behind the scenes footage of him styling girlfriend Amber Rose for her recent Elle photo shoot.

Nas Pleads Not Guilty to Kelis Contempt Charge

Nas has pleaded not guilty to a contempt filing from ex-wife

Kelis alleging that he owes over $200,000 in child and spousal support.

The proceedings

happened this morning (February 19), in response to Kelis’ lawyer filing the

motion last month.

In December, Kelis was awarded over $50,000 per month in

spousal and child support on the grounds of Nas’ reported annual gross income

of $4 million, and her dependence on him for financial stability.

Kelis filed for divorce last April while pregnant with their

son, citing irreconcilable differences. The child, named Knight, was born in

July, with Nas being refused entry into the delivery room due to intoxication.

Although the split was rumored to be due to infidelity, both

parties remained silent on the situation until earlier this month, when a

leaked version of the Nas/Damian Marley song “Strong Will Continue” contained

lyrics addressing the failed union.

“How in the hell am I supposed to stay comfy /When I pay

child support, alimony monthly?…So I’ve stuck with some married women so

fine/Cheating while their husband rushing on the 40-yard line / Wonder if this

is what my ex did the whole time.”

According to TMZ.com, the contempt hearing has been

scheduled for March 10. If found guilty, Nas will face jail time.

 At press time,

the Queens lyricist’s anticipated collaboration album with Damian Marley

(Distant Relatives) is still slated for an April 6 release.

Manager/Booking Agent Johnnie Cabbell: New Company, Business As Usual

As the booking agent for artists like Gucci Mane, Wacka Flocka, Nicki Minaj and as a manager for Shawty Lo, D4L, Crime Mob and Tamika Scott of Xscape, entertainment mogul Johnie Cabbell has his hands full. Since 1999 his company Hitt Afta Hitt Entertainment garnered a great deal of attention and success due to the fact that many artists that he worked with achieved chart-topping success over the course of the past few years. But as Johnnie gained more success, he also learned some things along the way.

Controversial articles in Ozone Magazine and Creative Loafing questioned Cabbell and his business dealings, including accusations that his artists would book shows and then skip out with the deposits. Johnnie has several projects on deck and has his sights set on delivering for his artists and the people on the streets with his new company, now named HAH Enterprises.

AllHipHop.com: So our readers know that may not know. Can you tell me exactly what you do and how you have been so successful with Hit Afta Hit Entertainment?

Johnnie Cabbell: Well it’s HAH Enterprises now. But, just to let you know this is Johnnie Cabbell, the CEO of HAH Enterprises. I have an entertainment company, which consists of booking agency, management, consulting, marketing, PR, and a TV network. We do a little of everything, I’m more of a one stop shop per say. I’ve been successful with a lot of groups. I’ve been blessed to be where I’m at today. It all started out with Crime Mob, and groups like D4L, Fabo, Shawty Lo, Young Ralph, DG Yola, I worked with Shop Boys, Franchise Boyz, Trillville and Lil’ Scrappy. So the name speaks for itself, you know what I’m saying? I’ve been around on the scene for about 10 years strong now. I have really been blessed and every year has been a bigger year for me. As far as the booking agency, which is the main component of my company, it’s been very successful. At Hit Afta Hit Booking I worked with Gucci Mane, Wacka Flocka, Nicki Minaj, OJ Da Juiceman, J Money, Verse Simmons, Lil Scrappy, Shop Boyz. The list goes on and on. So all the hot groups out of Atlanta, I’m either managing for them or booking for them, or bridging the gap where as I am facilitating a deal type or getting them to the next level. So I’ve been blessed. I got a great team that’s behind me that I put together so it’s not just all about me, it’s all about my team and the people that work with me and behind me that make up the success of HAH Enterprises.

AllHipHop.com: That’s whats up man. So how many people do you have working on your team right now?

Johnnie Cabbell: I have an office manager, I have 2 assistants, I have like 2 or 3 people that work for the marketing department. I have about a total between about 10-15. I do want to also want to shout and let everyone know about my non-profit organization that I have which is called Blessings In The Sky So that been in existence for the last year or two, the last that’s two years.

AllHipHop.com: I feel you man. So how did you get so well connected with all these artists in Atlanta? How did you decide that “booking would be a strong piece of the business I could work with”?

Johnnie Cabbell: To be honest with you, its funny how I fell into the business. I actually started off as an artist in the game to where as I was in a group called Ear Take. I used to get my singing on and do what I do. I did a lot of traveling before a lot of these groups came out like Jagged Edge, and 112, and your Bobby V’s and all that. That’s what opened up my eyes to see that I really, really need to know what going on, knowing what a contract and the breakdown of a contract, and know what publishing means and apart from royalties and different terms like that. As I started reading and getting educated myself I had some people who kind of pulled me to the side and put me up on game. I started getting a lot of hands on experience and I kind of found my niche. Like some people get high off different things, but I get high off seeing the success of others and knowing that I was the guy that was behind this person blowing up or this person reaching this status or reaching this level. That’s my high, that makes me feel good, that gives me a natural high.

AllHipHop.com: You mentioned you worked with Gucci and currently he is locked up. Do you have any plans with him when he gets out?

Johnnie Cabbell: Well you know it’s a very sensitive subject and so you know, I prefer to let it be what it is. Everyone who knows me and knows about Gucci, knows that I have been a big part behind his career as far as the road-wise to touring side of it. So when Gucci gets out, I mean, I don’t have any choice but to continue to do business with him because we have a lot of engagements we need to make up, and also take care of, so we will definitely be working together when he gets out. But I do have plans to continue working with him. I have a good relationship with him, he has a good relationship with me, its more than just making money, but we are friends. He’s my friend, we stay in the same neighborhood.

AllHipHop.com: So you’re from Zone 6 area?

Johnnie Cabbell: Well I’m not from the Zone 6, I grew up in Decatur.

AllHipHop.com: You mentioned that you are going to be doing some work with J Money and Fabo, can you tell us about what plans you may have for those artist’s careers? Johnnie

Johnnie Cabbell: A lot of people have been wondering where Fabo is and we actually launched a campaign called “Where the F is Fabo ?” You can fill in the gap, but he took some time off because he just had a baby and he wanted to spend some time with his son and watch him and see his son take his first steps and grow and get to age where he can start going to daycare and school everything. He’s been well, he’s done a lot of touring overseas and different country’s Kuwait, Iraq, Germany, Amsterdam, Japan. He really stays busy touring overseas and different parts of the country. But now he’s back and ready to re-introduce “The Geek”. He has a different approach to how his fans will perceive him and the average listener. We just dropped a mixtape called “Geek City”, so y’all need to be on the lookout, go ahead and download it.

AllHipHop.com: What about J Money? “First Name, Last Name” was hit in several parts of the country. Didn’t he change his name to J Futuristic?

Johnnie Cabbell: Yea J Futuristic because there were some mix-ups as far as the name and bout that name and who had it. I’ve been doing a lot of work as far as show. Shouts out to Bases Loaded Entertainment. That who he’s working with and as far as that, he’s out here grinding doing what he do and making it happen. But I have an artist called Supplier that just signed with Block Entertainment who is going to be a problem out here. I’m very excited about the opportunity to work with him and I am also very excited about my female rap artist that Im working with right now, that I personally manage and not just book for, she is my little niece and her name is Gloss. She’s putting in a lot of work and she’s having the opportunity to work with a lot of big artists out here we got a cut with Bobby V, Supplier, Shawty Lo, Fabo, Zaytoven, Fat Boy and Tamika Scott (formerly of Xcape) that I’m working with, and she’s coming out and doing her thing.

AllHipHop.com: One thing I was curious about in the booking world is what impact does Ticketmaster and Live Nation have on your business?

Johnnie Cabbell: I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s a competition thing, but it makes me know that if Jay-Z and Beyonce are performing at an area or arena I am going to strategize and try to book at different day and time. I definitely pay attention to companies like Live Nation and Ticketmaster; to my understanding Ticketmaster and Live Nation are coming together on some event or deal and have come together. But I keep my eyes on all that.

AllHipHop.com: As you think about the industry and your business what have you learned or what has this business taught you as you move forward in your other future entrepreneurial endeavors?

Johnnie Cabbell: It tough me to be careful with who I do business with, and all money is not good money. I just need to really watch out who my surroundings are around, and it definitely has brought me back down to really just having the humbleness and really having that true grind and passion for the game and just has made me really watch what I do and what I say and how I say it and knowing that, Its always someone looking at you when you think that its not. And there’s always someone paying attention. What I have learned is, I always have to be on top of my game and be on my P’s and q’s and just know someone is looking at me even when I they are not. I had some bumps and bruised throughout 2009, but overall it definitely a good year, but it definitely opened up my eyes and I am thankful for some of the things I go through good and bad. But, I try to learn from my mistakes. I try to learn from my encounters that I come across that are people that try to come against me and bring me down or team me down. I learn from it. I look at every situation and try to turn it from negative to a positive. So I want to give a shout out to my haters out there. I got to give a shout out to all my haters cause I definitely got a few haters out there.

AllHipHop.com: What is the biggest misconception of you?

Johnnie Cabbell: The biggest misconception about me is that I am just a person that’s out to rob somebody or take advantage of a situation or anything that’s going on. I feel people just go off what they hear and not just going off taking the time to talk or taking the time to go see like “You know what? Let me take a visit to see what kind of business they do at HAH Enterprises to get a true picture of the establishment. Let me take a minute to get in contact with Johnnie Cabbell or to people who have done business with Johnnie to get a true picture of who Johnnie is without doing business with them.“ People judge without getting to know a person or without doing business with them

AllHipHop.com: That’s what’s up man. I appreciate your openness with this interview.

Johnnie Cabbell: Yea no doubt AllHipHop.com. Yea I do want to make sure, sometimes people get a little misconception about who I manage and who I do booking for. I manage Shawty Lo, Fabo, Crime Mob, D4L, Yung Ralph, Tamika Scott, Supplier, Gloss. Those are my artists those are the names I manage. Sometimes people say “Johnnie manages Gucci.” No, people say that because I handled the show business for him. But I book for Gucci, but I book for Wacka Flock, I book for Nicki Minaj. The different between booking and just doing a show, I handle all of their booking, I am their official booking agent.

The Last Word: Michael Jackson’s BK Spot Gets Immortality! Another Quincy Jones Remake! Sober Morgan!

What’s good everybody? Another week has come, another week has gone.  The Chinese government strongly disapproving of the Dalai Lama’s visit with President Obama, Tiger Woods resurfacing to issue his first public statement three months after news broke of his infidelity, a man in Texas crashing his plane and killing and injuring people over an apparent grudge against the IRS and U.N. speculation that Iran may be secretly developing a nuclear warhead for a missile. Just another week in the world we live in.

Shout out to the sounding boards for always finding ways to live when the war is over.

Here is… the Last Word for the week ending Feb. 19, 2010.

1.  Jessica Alba Gets Last Laugh Over Bullies; Throws Catholic Shield Over Film Nudity

Here’s something you can count on. You know you are a bonafide success in Hollywood when your bank account more than reflects your love for your job.

No one knows that better than Jessica Alba, who has managed to get the last laugh over those who bullied her in high school.  Needless to say being the object of many admirers and attached to many a successful movie (Sin City, current box office champ Valentine’s Day), has literally paid off for Alba, who confessed that “making lots of money has made me happy.”

“No one else helped me – I’ve done this all by myself, on my own terms. My dad’s also turned his real-estate business round and (is) doing really well, and my brother acts, models and does mortgages, so we’ve all come up in the world,” the actress told Scarlet magazine.  “Anyone out there who gets bullied should realize that they can take control of their lives and succeed.”And with success and financial independence comes a bit of power. If you’re looking for Alba to go au natural in front of the camera, think again. It’s not part of the plan, the actress said.

“No, I’ll never do a nude scene. I can act sexy and wear sexy clothes but I can’t go naked,” Alba shared with Scarlet. “I think I was always very uncomfortable about the way my body developed, and I remember my grandmother would freak out and throw a towel over me if she saw me wearing just a bra and panties.”

Those looking for a target to blame for Alba’s non-nudity stance can put it all on the former Dark Angel star’s Catholic upbringing.

“I come from a very Catholic family so it wasn’t seen as a good thing to flaunt yourself like that,” she said. “I can handle being sexy with clothes on but not with them off.”2. Brooklyn Subway Entrance Honors Michael Jackson The location for Michael Jackson’s classic video to his hit song “Bad” will be immortalized once more, thanks to the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership.

The New York Post reports that efforts have begun to create an artistic tribute to the King of Pop at the entrance to Brooklyn’s Hoyt-Schermerhorn station. As of right now, the project is in the planning stages. An artist has yet to be chosen by the DBP, which is deciding on the style of artwork for the tribute.

“The art could be the size of a huge mural and possibly rely on lights and projection at nighttime,” said DBP president Joe Chan.

The subway station, which serves the A, C and G train lines, is best known for being the site of the Martin Scorsese-directed “Bad” video, which came out in 1987. The 16-minute clip featured Jackson and Wesley Snipes in a pre-New Jack City role as one of the friends  the hitmaker  takes to the subway station to show he’s still “Bad” after returning  to his “gangsta” –ridden neighborhood from private school.

According to the Post, all of the music scenes for the short film were shot at the Hoyt-Schermerhorn station.

The idea of recognizing Jackson at the station was first mentioned by NY City Councilwoman Letitia James, who proposed renaming the stop after the music legend and hanging a plaque in his honor. Despite opposition from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which claimed that subway riders would be confused with a station named or co-named after an individual, James and the DBP triumphed since the tribute will be displayed on private land on the front of a private office building at 45 Hoyt Street.3. Tracy Morgan Credits Son for Sober Mind State

With his new autobiography, I Am the New Black, and job security with his Emmy-nominated work on 30 Rock, Tracy Morgan has much to be thankful for.

But the success the comedian/actor has pales in comparison to the one thing he is most grateful for, his son.

In an interview on PBS’ Tavis Smiley show, Morgan opened up about the role his teenage son played in getting him clean and sober. According to the entertainer, it all came about after a conversation he had with his son in 2007 after a judge ordered him to wear an alcohol bracelet for six months in response to being arrested many times for drunk driving.

“I’m walking around with a bracelet on my ankle and my son looking at me like I’m Kunta Kinte, like, ‘What you doing Dad? What if I start driving and drinking? Would that be cool?’ And that was it for me. That was the end of it,” Morgan told Smiley. “My son said, ‘What if I start driving drunk and kill somebody?’ That right there just made me look into the mirror, like, I got to step up my game.”

In addition to his son, Morgan cited his father as a source for living life wisely. Prior to dying AIDS when Morgan was 17, Morgan admitted his dad taught that the key to survival was to learn from your mistakes.

“Rock bottom for some people is death,” the funnyman said. “Some people never learn from their mistakes. They don’t learn from other people’s mistakes.”

Evidence of Morgan’s new mindstate can be found on the small screen and big screen with his new movie Cop Out with Bruce Willis, which hits theaters this month.

4. Usher, Tyrese, Robin Thicke and Trey Songz Visit a New Secret Garden

Let’s face it. Remakes in the world of music are a dime a dozen. It’s almost inevitable that at some point in time a classic song will be reintroduced with a modern day spin on what is near and dear to those who love that tune in all its original glory.

And with that comes the opinion that some songs should not be touched at all. Jay-Z illustrated that view this week when he felt that 1985’s star-studded “We Are the World” was not meant for tampering. With one Quincy Jones song remade, there now comes another reinterpretation of the famed producer’s work via Jermaine Dupri’s new take on Jones’ “The Secret Garden (Sweet Seduction Suite).”

If you haven’t heard this tune or used it to create the perfect mood for a night of romance and intimate activity with your significant other, please know that the original version featured baby-making vocals from Al B. Sure, James Ingram, El DeBarge and Barry White.

For the new “Secret Garden,” Dupri has recruited Usher, Robin Thicke, Tyrese and Trey Songz to create the sexual chemistry set by the legendary predecessors.  And while the new line-up is worthy of any composition, JD had to really consider if he wanted to risk messing up something Quincy perfected the first time around.

“It took a minute for me to even think about touching it. It’s a couple of components in that record that you don’t wanna touch — Barry White being one of the main components,” said the beatmaker,  who told MTV how he could not bring himself to eliminate “The Maestro” from his upgrade of the romantic hit.” I had to leave him [on the song]. There’s nobody out there in the world that’s got a voice like his or even sounded the way he sounded. So I had to make sure I could leave that. It’s gonna be interesting for y’all to hear how these young guys sound mixed in with him.”

Look for Dupri’s “Secret Garden” remake to appear on a new album from Jones, the Atlanta hitmaker revealed.  At this time, no release date for the album has been announced.

With new line-up already set in stone, let’s explore the guys who were close to making the final cut, had JD opted to open up the garden to more vocalists.

“…I wanted to put Anthony Hamilton on there, Maxwell on there. But it’s hard, because it’s only a four- or five-man [song]. That was the hardest part for me,” Dupri shared.

So what do you think? Will Tyrese, Trey, Thicke and Usher do justice to “The Secret Garden?” Or would it be better set with Maxwell, Hamilton, Prince or even D’Angelo on the mic? Maybe a female version of the song with Sade, Beyonce, Alicia Keys or Mary J. Blige?

What say you on this? Who would be the best to take care of the “Garden?”

 In Other Words…

Simon Cowell’s imminent exit from American Idol, could be Ashanti’s gain. WENN reports the former Murder Inc. princess is seeking talent for new record label by producing and hosting her own version of the hit Fox show. Although specifics  regarding Ashanti’s show are being kept secret, the singer’s mother/manager, Tina Douglas provided a little of what to expect.

“It’s an unscripted television show that is definitely music related. We’ll be revealing more in the coming weeks,” Douglas said. “She has her own record label, called Written Entertainment, and the show is going to revolve around her label… It’s going to be really big.”

Vin Diesel is coming back to the franchise that put him on the map. Variety reports the actor will star and produce the third chapter in the sci-fi saga that began with Pitch Black and carried on with The Chronicles of Riddick.

Although details on the film’s plot are being kept under wraps, insiders say the third movie, titled Riddick, will be closer in tone to Pitch Black and will focus on the Riddick character rather than the universe he inhabits.

At this time, dates are being worked out for Riddick  so it won’t interfere  with Universal’s fifth installment of Fast and Furious. That film, which Diesel is attached to star and produce, is set to shoot sometime this year.

Lionel Ritchie and Quincy Jones’ “We Are the Word” remake has spun off into a new effort involving an all-star line up of Latin stars. Perez Hilton reports that Gloria Estefan has gotten permission from Richie to redo “We Are the World.” The Spanish version of the charitable hit, which has been completely translated, will be called “Somos El Mundo.”

Among those lined up for the remake are Ricky Martin, Paulina Rubio, Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony and Enrique Iglesias. Proceeds from “Somos El Mundo” will go towards efforts to help Haiti.

New music from Leela James as arrived. The songstress is setting the stage for her return with the new single “Tell Me You Love Me.”

The  Gerrard Baker-produced song, which James co-wrote with Andrea Martin and Gordon Williams, will be featured on the singer’s forthcoming album, My Soul, which is due in stores on May 25.

You can now count Jennifer Hudson among the stars sporting a milk mustache.  The Oscar-winning singer/actress, who has joined the Got Milk? campaign, will promote healthy living as well as the benefits of drinking milk in two newly released ads.

For Hudson, the chance to promote milk strikes a personal chord, considering the drink was “definitely a part of my upbringing for sure.”

News of Hudson’s Got Milk? Involvement comes as she works on the follow-up to her self-titled debut album, which is expected to hit stores in late Spring/Summer 2010.
