Jay-Z’s Target-exclusive Reasonable Doubt vinyl has fueled boycott calls, but a look at the past two years shows many of Hip-Hop’s biggest artists have released exclusive editions through the same retailer.

Jay-Z‘s decision to release a Target-exclusive vinyl edition of Reasonable Doubt for the album’s 30th anniversary has re-ignited calls for a boycott and, if nothing else, has sparked intense debate within the culture. But while the criticism has been loud, many have started to point out that the retail strategy itself is anything but new.

Target has faced boycott campaigns from activists and the Black community over claims regarding the dismantling of D.E.I. (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion), company’s business relationships and even investments connected to Israel. As a result, artists and brands that partner with the retail giant have been targeted as well.

As he celebrates 30 years of his rap career, Jay-Z has found himself at the center of that scorching hot debate. Roc Nation announced the commemorative Reasonable Doubt vinyl would be sold exclusively through Target. The release celebrates one of Hip-Hop’s most influential albums and is part of a larger rollout, likely years in the making.

Still, many argue the outrage has been selective.

Industry insiders cite the likely reality that record labels rather than artists themselves. These deals are designed to guarantee premium shelf space, drive promotional campaigns and help labels recoup manufacturing and marketing costs. While artists may approve releases, distribution strategies are often part of broader label agreements that have existed for decades. But, this is Jay-Z.

More curious critics contend Jay-Z has received far more intense criticism when numerous major urban artists have participated in nearly identical Target-exclusive campaigns – minus the backlash.

The list is here simply to demonstrate how pervasive retail partnerships have become across the music industry, especially with Target. Target exclusives have become a common marketing tool. The details of his deal have not been made public and the mogul has not addressed the furor no matter how viral it has become.

For supporters of the ongoing boycott, the retailer itself remains the issue regardless of who negotiated the agreement. Some say, “Just continue as you were regardless of Jay-Z’s business.” Share your thoughts in the comments and read some others, outside of the culture, have partnered with Target. For perspective.
