Top 5 Dead Or Alive: Lil Kim

Lil Kim’s dedication to Hip-Hop is apparent. Appearing on some of the most revered contributions to the genre, The Queen Bee, has shared bars with classic contemporaries. She’s invested over twenty years into the culture. A respected and provocative reign has solidified her relevancy.

Hard Core 2014 is the latest project. Chronicling a lifetime appreciation for Hip-Hop, Lil Kim, delivers her list of  the greatest five(ish) greatest MCs.

The Notorious B.I.G.

“Of course, you know, Biggie. See, I would say Ready to Die, it’s a class. That’s hard [picking my favorite album], you know, when you say, Biggie, that’s like saying, Michael Jackson. You can’t pick one favorite album from Michael Jackson; you can’t pick one from, Biggie. I would say [that] because Life After Death had more songs on it you have to go with Life After Death. It has more songs on it. But as far as the classic album it would definitely be, Ready to Die. B.I.G. made two huge classics before he left this world. I think Life After Death is also a classic.”

Eminem

“Eminem is one of my other favorite rappers. His first [commercial] album [The Marshall Mathers LP is my favorite].”

Jay Z

“He comes from the same world that I come from. We grew up in the same neighborhood. I knew him since—I actually knew Jay Z before I came into the industry. I’ve known Jay Z since I was 14 years old. So, a lot of things that he says are facts. That’s just pointblank, and it’s just like me, a lot of things that I say are facts. We know each other.  You know, he’s just a hustler by heart. He’s a hustler I just had to say that.”

Rakim/KRS-One/Nas/Big Daddy Kane/ Queen Latifah

“I also put people like Rakim, KRS-One, Nas those are also my favorites. You know what I mean, Big Daddy Kane, was one of my favorites. I mean , I can name a lot. When I was a baby listening to Hip-Hop—man, I can go on and on. But I had to narrow it down; so, I gave you that. As far as the women, we have to give the women some thought. There’s Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, Roxanne Shanté—everybody—I grew up on all the females that were in the game. So, shout out to all the females who emcee.”

Drake

“Now, I would say, Drake. I can’t even front. He definitely would probably never be a friend. I don’t really like him as a person. But, he’s definitely my favorite artist right now. Drake’s got it, point-blank, period. He has that all-around factor. He has everything. He’s the complete triple threat, if you ask me.”

    Terrible List.
But understandble… she wants to work with Em and Drake…. cause them niggas aint it at all. This is what gets these kids gassed. See “they co-sign Em as great”…. nah little nigga … she trying keep the lights on.

Em and Drake got maybe 1 and half classics albums between them …..
and they both Em’s. MMLP and SSLP(maybe)

Idk I think “The Eminem Show” was a classic to “till I collapse” is probably his best song ever but everything he put out after that wasn’t that great. But I agree Drakes bitch ass ain’t got no classics I think she only put him on that list because he probably the hottest rapper out with all his corny repetitive fake love songs.

TES has some super corny beats and concepts he did already on previous albums but I respect ur opinion.
        Peace God.

White America, Square Dance, Buisness, Soilder, Without me, Drips, Hallie, Sing For The Moment, lol the whole album has new concepts. The only song with the same concepts were superman and Cleaning out my closest. And on top of that “Till i Collapse” was the hardest he ever went. The critics and mass majority of hip hop and hip hop blog say his first three albums are classic meaning TES is a classic album. But like you said ur opinion is opinion and ill respect it too.

Alot of those records have corny ass beats. nothing classic about them.
        Blessings.

Okay i think im done arguing with you its clear you dont want to give Em the proper respect he deserves i understand if people say he sold out or he hasnt been the same since rehab but to say his first three albums arent classic is hip hop blasphemy. Hey but your opinion is your opinion but facts are facts. Tbh i used to hate em when i was a kid just cause he was white but then when i got older i started realizing how dope he was

” you give Em the proper respect he deserves”

Dude … its my opinion. I aint hating EM stuff just sounds mad corny to me. I love all colored rappers from Terminology to Action Bronson.

Any way – to you and yours. Peace God.

I personally think you’re watering down “classic”. If The Eminem Show is a class is then Illmatic is a super duper classic. Classics have dope beats, dope rhymes, and was significantly influential. Of course it’s all subjective though…I’d say the MMLP is a classic but that’s it for Em.

      • keepitswizzy

Yea but what makes a record a classic? The beats or the lyrics? I have hated a beat on many different artists songs but to hear the lyrics I deal with the beat.

      • 5% Hov

Both. Mainly lyrics. But if it was just lyrics every nas album would be classic.

    ★Nas
    ★Slick Rick
    ★Kool G Rap
    ★Jadakiss
    ★DMX
    ☆Sean P, Immortal Technique,
Vinnie Paz, K-Rino, Sick Jacken, Jaysaun (boston), Smoothe da Hustler

25 years of being obsessed with hip hop. I honestly cant do a top 5.

    • cricejr

I fully agree…I really can’t pick a true top 10 from #10 to #1. Also, are we talkin about MCs, lyricists, albums, etc? It’s all a matter of aesthetics….to me Phonte of Little Brother would be on that list and some would be like “who?”.

      • hoeyuno

i agree. And everytime I try to put a list together I think of someone else or forget about someone..Too many Emcees in the last 30 yeasr for a top 10 list.. Phonte is dope!! I caught on to him late though. I got Charity Starts At Home but in your opinion whats his dope ish that im missing out on??

  3. Nyga07

lol man why nobody feeling Drake, I mean lets not front, forget him being weak, not from streets and the tv show shyt. I’m no Drake fan like that , but as of right now and over the past few years he is the most diverse artist just about that I’ve heard especially of the NEW gEN…hELLZ NO HE NOT CRACKING MY TOP FIVE when i have to already go thru jay, big, pac, nas, rakim, etc etc etc etc
but dude deserve some credit…..being associated with Weezy hurts bcuz if dude was with jay im sure he would get a lil more just a lil more respect..

  4. Immortal

    1. Rakim
    2. PE
    3. KRS
    4. Jurassic 5 / Nas
    5. Dilated Peoples
Grandmaster Flash and Furious Five, RUN DMC, Pharcyde, PRT, LL in his early days, Kool G, BDK, Em, so many more, but I’m biased to the early 80’s through early Y2K artists. Very few newer artists would make it because of longevity. How many of them are going to be bumped 20yrs after they dropped? That’s what I’m looking for. Just Ice is in heavy rotation right now with “Goin way back”.

  5. water_ur_seeds

LOL @ putting Drake in for good measure so she can get some work with a relevant rapper… That pic is mad tacky to…

Even though she did have skills back in the day, even if she didnt write all her rhymes… I wish she didn’t fck herself with all the surgery…

  6. Guerilla♢Cle

Anybody hating on Em and saying he’s not a great is flat out hating. I’d put Em up against anybody from any Era. Lyric for lyric ppl please stop it. Em snaps on features and everyone knows it

  7. Splatter

Lmao Em first commercial release was Slim Shady Lp. She loves to hype Big like its a huge choice to pick his best album, dude had 2 albums. Death really leaves you a legacy in hip hop, no disrespect to big but people need to be real that big had unlimited potential but his work was not extensive as Stan’s make it. 2 albums and a bunch of remixed verses.

  8. Guest

She also mentioned Queen Latifah & Roxanne Shante in her interview to make sure and have women representatives….but I see AHH doesn’t care to report that. lol
