On September 13, at the 2009 MTV Music Video Awards, Kayne West graced the red carpet of the yearly show with a big bottle of Hennessey and his girlfriend Amber in tow. He’d been chugging the liquor all night and even shared it with his friends. When pop princess, Taylor Swift gleefully strolled on stage to give her acceptance speech for Best Female Video, Kanye bum-rushed the set, snatched the microphone and blurted out, “I’m sorry, but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time.”
Camera one panned to a shocked Beyonce. Camera two shot a teary-eyed Taylor Swift and a then-unfazed Roc Star, who gave his infamous “Kanye Shrug.” The world gasped, people talked, pontificated and joked for months and months. Even President Barack Obama had an opinion.
We’re still talking.
It’s been months since the VMA’s and Memphis Bleek has a unique view on the whole fiasco, including the notion “What if Memphis Bleek did what Kanye did?” Bleek believers his former Roc-a-Fella label mate may have been party in a publicity set up and he’s got history on his side.
AllHipHop.com: What were your thoughts on the whole Taylor Swift/Kanye West situation?
Memphis Bleek: I think that was staged man. Because if that was me with a bottle of Hennessy on the red carpet, first of all, with no bag over it – Jail! Before I even got in, to take the mic. Jail! Then I go in there witt the bottle and then I get on stage and take [the mic]…Jail again! Everything thing that happened, if it was me in that situation, jail is involved. Like he just go on stage, they blogged about him, put him on every late night show and she blows up? He just really solidified her being the princess of America. She’s America’s sweetheart now.
