His name might be Common, but there’s very little ordinary about him.
The Chicago MC has been a mainstay in the rap industry for over 15 years, but he’s also an actor, a spokesman, and if his longevity is any indication, he’s an extraordinary man.
AllHipHop.com spent some quality time with Common backstage at yesterday’s (July 4) “Welcome America” Independence Day concert in Philadelphia, as he was readying to join industry pals, The Roots and Queen Latifah, onstage for a star-spangled celebration.
Ever the charmer with the words, Common spoke eloquently on the “freedom” he enjoys most (and it’s not his current single status), and he also relayed the message that “being you” is job number one, a point not lost in light of the recent “coming out” of singer Frank Ocean.
Common was also stoked to be in the presence of his peers – including a special surprise guest that AllHipHop.com didn’t know about beforehand, but he spilled the beans on.
And, he was kind enough not to pummel his peers from the past – namely a certain sweater-wearing, bottle-brawling Canadian whom he had words with just months ago. Since that time, the heat has intensified between crews, but ever the gentleman, Common advises that beef is always best kept in the booth.
Check out AllHipHop.com’s exclusive, Fourth of July interview with the incomparable Common, where he talks freedom:

Fading rapper Soulja Boy has inserted himself into the A$AP Rocky/SpaceGhostPurrp feud, and has taken the side of A$AP Rocky, going as far as calling the Miami producer a “p*ssy” and even threatening to eat his face. Huh, where they do that at?
Check out a series of threatening tweets that Soulja Boy sent to SpaceGhostPurrp last night:
“SPACE GHOST P*SSY”
“Only reason I gave @SGhostPurrp a pass was because ASAP Rocky. Now that rocky doesn’t f*ck with you. We gon eat yo face n*gga. Bath salts.”
“I swear to God on my mama, I want yo face n*gga. We gon eat that sh*t. bath salts. p*ssy. @SGhostPurrp”
SpaceGhostPurrp responded to Soulja Boy’s threats, and let him know that he knows where to find him if he really wants it. Check out his responses below:
“Starting twitter beef aint g bruh you know where miami @ RT @souljaboy SPACE GHOST P*SSY.,” he tweeted back.
“These n*ggas childish”
“This n*gga really rapping on twitter right now bruh lol this sh*t funny”
Crying at the BET Awards like a baby and then sending out these tweets – that ain’t G Soulja Boy!
(AllHipHop News) Since Wiz Khalifa and Curren$y teamed up in 2009 to release their How Fly mixtape, fans have been seeking a new project between the two. The wait won’t be much longer as Wiz tweeted earlier this week, “Speakin Of Anniversaries, Iss Been 3 years Since Me and Spitta Dropped How Fly. Aug. 9th We’ll Be Giving You Smthn Else To Smoke To.”
“Its Called ‘Live In Concert,’ he continued, “Now Break Out Your Nuggs.”
Wiz Khalifa is also putting the finishing touches on his sophomore Atlantic Records release, O.N.I.F.C., which is currently set to drop on August 28, while Curren$y recently released his Warner Bros. major label debut, The Stoned Immaculate, in early June.
Several days after the G.O.O.D. Music collective officially premiered their recent single, “New God Flow,” with Kanye West and Pusha T, it has been confirmed that the group’s first single, “Mercy,” is certified platinum. The song, which currently sits at #15 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, has taken the #2 spot on their Hip-Hop and R&B chart and sold an estimated 1.1 million copies to date. Cruel Summer is set to be release on August 7.
Ten-time Grammy Award-nominated producer and singer Pharrell Williams was awarded the Golden Note Award at the 25th Annual ASCAP Rhythm and Soul Awards according to THR. In addition to Pharrell’s honor, frequent Drake collaborator Noah “40” Shebib was awarded the “Songwriter of the Year” award.
Warner Bros. and MMG recording artist Meek Mill performed at the awards show, as did Marsha Ambrosius, Tyrese, and Don Cannon who DJ’ed for a star-studded crowd that included Hit-Boy, No I.D. Wayne Brady, Jordin Sparks, Quincy Jones, and many more.
A few weeks back, boxing promoter Damon Feldman and wealthy entrepreneur Alki Davi offered Chris Brown and Drake $1 million each, if they would agree to fight each other for charity. Neither Drake nor Chris Brown responded to the offer – until now.
RumorFix caught up with Chris Brown while he was leaving a club in Hollywood, and asked him if he would consider fighting Drake. Breezy said YES!! Check out the clip below:
Now, we are hearing that the promoter is offering the winner of the fight $9 million, and the loser will still walk away with a cool $1 million. So Drizzy, what’s up? Are you down to thrown down or what?
(AllHipHop News) The oppressive heat and traffic gridlock didn’t deter several hundred thousand people from converging on downtown Philadelphia last night (July 4) for the city’s annual “Welcome America” festival.
Fourth of July in Philadelphia, the birthplace of democracy, typically means a performance from The Roots. This year was no different, as the city’s lauded rap band, along with Mayor Michael N##### and sponsor Wawa, hosted a nearly five-hour concert held across from the steps of the Philadelphia Art Museum, where “Rocky” once famously cheered himself on.
With The Roots at the helm, opening with a “go-go” flavored set, the evening included performances from some of rap’s most successful, longtime stars, Common and Queen Latifah.
The trio of industry greats volleyed themselves back and forth between sets, chiming in on each other’s hits through the night. The highlight of the night, however, was a surprise performance from Lauryn Hill.
The former Fugees member, who recently plead guilty to tax charges, was in high-energy mode in a frilly, white tu-tu style dress and red boots. She ran through a medley of chart-topping hits from her classic, solo album, 1998’s The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, and the Fugees’ epic, The Score.
Common’s “Go” set the crowd into a frenzy, while his “Act Too (The Love of My Life)” performance with The Roots solidified the lyrical bond between himself and rap impresario, Black Thought. Behind the scenes, he talked his love for Philadelphia and what he most looked forward to during the event:
“For me, one of my favorite artists ever is Lauryn Hill. So, for me to be able to see her playing – especially with The Roots playing along with her, that’s just a high-level of artistry,” said Common in an interview with AllHipHop.com. “And, I know she’s ready to rock. It’s a good feeling.”
From backstage, a svelte-looking Queen Latifah peeked out from her trailer from time to time, unwilling to give many interviews, but happy to smile for the cameras and chat with old friends.
Fans were serenaded mostly in song by the Oscar-nominated rapstress/actress, who came back out later for a surprise collaboration on “Sarah” with soulful singer Darryl Hall of Hall & Oates, but didn’t forget to include her rap classics, “Ladies First” and “U-N-I-T-Y”, in her act.
Philadelphia legend, Jazzy Jeff, played DJ for some of the show, while in between acts, The Roots played emcees and hosts, keeping the crowd engaged in a show that had few snags outside of the sheer enormity of the crowd.
For the teeny-bopper set, Joe Jonas was also on hand to offer some of his solo hits, as well as a few from his successful run as part of The Jonas Brothers.
“Welcome America” is just one of many festival appearances The Roots will make during Summer 2012; however, global fans can see them on August 1 and 2 at Paradiso in Amsterdam.

A.V.I.U.S. of Prime Element, one of the stage’s artists, is backed by Evidence and Fashawn, enlisting the production talents of Shuko for the remix of “Same Ol’ Line.”

It seems like there are more and more dangerous drugs being introduced everyday. The latest to follow in the footsteps of “bath salts” is a Colombian drug called “Scopolamine,” more commonly referred to as “the devil’s breath.”
The drug makes you incapable of making your own decisions, and makes you a slave to the person who has given it to you. It’s the modern day “ruffies,” but with a much deadlier effect.
VICE’s Ryan Duffy went to Colombia to check out the strange and powerful drug. The first few days in the country were a harrowing montage of freaked-out dealers and unimaginable horror stories about Scopolamine. After meeting only a few people with firsthand experience, the story took a far darker turn than we ever could have imagined. Check out the documentary below:
It’s crazy how accessible the drug is.
Game is back at it again, and has name dropped more than a few people in his new freestyle over Rick Ross’ God Forgives, I Don’t single “So Sophisticated.” On the freestyle, Game raps:
“I’m selling out arena’s/Got a bad b*tch and her a** fat/she play with balls like Venus/her a** fat like Serena’s/that p*ssy good like Trina’s”
The Compton rapper goes on to name drop even more, name checking Rihanna and talk show host Ellen DeGeneres. Yes, Ellen.
“Got white girls, Coachella, with Rihanna hair, umbrella/ I pull up in that white ghost with that white b#### like Ellen,” raps Game.
If you’re already tired of the Game’s freestyling, sorry to inform you that he’s not stopping anytime soon. The rapper says that he plans to remix Meek Mill’s “Amen”, 2 Chainz’ “No Lie”, and Ca$h Out’s “Cashin’ Out”.
You can check out Game’s version of “So Sophisticated” below:
