A man in New York says what seemed like a promising first date with a successful business owner quickly spiraled into one of the most unsettling dating experiences of his life after her ex-boyfriend allegedly tracked her to his home.
On June 24, @icepiesies posted a viral video explaining that he had been talking to the woman for about a week before they met for drinks. “I thought I’d finally found somebody that was maybe compatible with me,” he said.
How Did This Date Take A Turn?
He described her as attractive, well-respected in the community, and the owner of her own business. After another week of seeing her, he invited her to his house, and she spent the night.
“So that next morning at about eight, nine o’clock in the morning, I hear somebody pounding on my door, like straight up pounding,” the man said. “It woke me up.”
He said that when he looked outside, he spotted a red work truck. His date immediately recognized it. “Oh my God, that’s my ex-boyfriend,” he said she told him.
Concerned because he often shares the home with his four children, the man told her he wanted nothing to do with her until the issues with the ex were resolved. About a week later, she allegedly contacted him. She supposedly claimed that everything had been handled. Additionally, she explained that her ex had secretly placed an Apple AirTag on her vehicle to track her location.
What Happened After the Initial Altercation?
Believing the ordeal was over, he continued seeing her. Weeks later, he loaned her his car after her vehicle broke down. Instead, she disappeared for most of the day without responding to his calls or texts.
“She goes, ‘Well, I don’t know where it is,’” he said after asking when she would return his vehicle. “Now I’m starting to freak out a little bit.”
When she finally headed back that evening, the nightmare intensified. The same red work truck appeared on his street moments before she arrived with a state trooper directly behind her. “She proceeds to do about 60, maybe 70 miles an hour down my dead-end road,” he said.
According to the man, officers suspected she was impaired. After she allegedly refused sobriety testing, police searched his vehicle. The police allegedly found numerous open alcohol containers and other belongings that weren’t his, leading to her arrest. He claimed she resisted officers before being taken into custody.
The experience led him to spend the night in a hotel out of fear that her ex-boyfriend was watching him. The following morning, he says that the same red truck allegedly followed him until he drove directly to a police station. There, he claims the officers questioned the driver. At the same time, he sought protective orders to end the ordeal for good.
How Common Are Incidents of Stalking by Ex-Partners?
While the circumstances described in the video are unusual, experts say stalking by current or former partners is far more common than many people realize. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 1 in 5 women and 1 in 10 men in the United States have experienced stalking during their lifetime. The agency notes that common stalking behaviors include repeatedly showing up at a victim’s home, following them, monitoring their movements, and using technology such as GPS devices or Bluetooth trackers to track their location.
The alleged use of an Apple AirTag in this story also reflects a growing concern among law enforcement. Since AirTags and similar Bluetooth trackers became widely available, authorities have documented cases in which the devices were misused by former partners to secretly monitor victims’ whereabouts. Researchers have likewise found that while tracking devices were designed to help people locate lost belongings, they can also be exploited for stalking despite built-in anti-stalking features.
