Russell Simmons and Jay-Z

Russell Simmons Defends Jay-Z’s “Occupy All Streets” T-Shirt

AllHipHop News) The controversy surrounding the Occupy Wall Street movement has hit the fashion world, thanks to a controversial T-shirt that was supposed to be released by Jay-Z.

Hip-Hop mogul Russell Simmons, who was seen with Jay-Z the night he debuted the “Occupy All Streets” T-shirt, weighed in on the matter in an interview with Billboard.biz.

“What’s wrong with selling goodness? There’s nothing wrong with it,” Russell Simmons said.

“Jay-Z didn’t make a T-shirt [that said] ‘F**k the Bums on the Street,” Simmons continued. “He wrote a T-shirt ‘Occupy All Streets’ – I’m happy, it furthers the movement, it inspires the movement.”

Simmons, who is worth over $250 million dollars, has also been the subject of criticism for his association with Occupy Wall Street.

But the mogul defended his fortune, by noting his track record for consistently giving back to poor and disenfranchised people around the world.

“I’m going to get every corporation that wants to support us to get branding as part of the process,” Russell Sioms said. “No one’s against business. We’re against business having too much control over our government.”

  • Ohh, I want one!

Im against business having too much control over hip hop and all hip hop media.

Think about it, we just got force-fed an album of him and kanye talking about how poor we are and how we never been out of the country and all that shit. and now he is down with us? Jay is using Russell. Russell may be more down to earth and sincere, thats true. Jay-Z cares about the 99%? He got 99 problems and it should be us! This braggard is showing you how dumb the consumers are. When you buy these Tees from him, it will prove that we are so stupid we will support people who are in the 1% who hoard wealth and block competition and look down on us literally (listen to the words). Are we that dumb, probably. Why fight for people who are so stupid they will defend a rich mans wealth and accomplishments as if it were their own? Obsessed fans and impressionable children fuck everything up in the end. Read it in a mag or see it onTV and it gotta be true to a fool!

    Viva “JAY-Z”!!!!!!

If it’s black and successful we (black people) hate it. DENIGGAFY yourselves.

  • Bernie Hardknock

Jay… I like your music but you haven’t been down with the 99% in over a decade…. You can’t be involved in everything… Believe it or not, some popular movements can go on without you….

  • As a local Boston T-Shirt brand we’ve considered creating a n Occupy Boston t-shirt but figure that product should be created (and sold?) By the Dewey Square Campers themselves- since their message is not fully defined they should also determine any merchandise designs and messages, as well as decide if they want to muddy their core message(s) with commerce.

    Your thoughts please…

  • PLEASE READ THIS! Before everyone starts the Fight Fest and Name calling…let’s stop looking to “Entertainers” to do ANTYHING for us. The only thing ALL entertainers care about is the bottom line…how much did I make? And who helps them make their loot? Everyday people who purchase their music, go see their movies, go to see them play sports, etc. Well it’s time that they ALL feel the pinch too. How about keeping your cash in your pocket and do something for yourself, your family or some who could use a hand up…not a hand out. I’m just saying….

  • I really wish CNN & FOX would stop blowing this Occupy bullshit outta proportion like they are, I went past this protest about an hour ago and there’s less then a thousand of them out there…….. The news is making it look like the Million Man March 2.0 to instill fear or summin, I dunno what the agenda is, but thi protest is more of an annoyance then a true threat for those wall street types, the bankers are laughing at them, holding up signs that say “Get A Job” and what not……… They need to pick a new strategy

    • back in the day you would be considered one of the idiots who would vote for HITLER to be president or would vote for them to continue ton enslave your asssss… people like you just love to be held down and want no change in the system…GTFOH with this bullshit.. without protesting for change no one will be given the chance to make any significant money come 50 or so years from now.. this about the future not present.. the gap between the rich is getting real big each year..think about it…

Sounds like a bunch of whiners out here talking about this guys
t-shirt.  Go out there and make it happen for yourselves.  I, by no
means, have a fraction of Jay-Z’s or Russell Simmons’ wealth,
nevertheless, I am not bitter that i don’t.  They made it happen for
themselves.  They did what they did throughout their lives to get them
to where they are at.  Most of you sound like you’re expecting to be
handed all the fruits of labor without putting in the labor.  People
have to understand their mentalities when they were coming up.  They
were hustlers, and I’m not saying necessarily drug dealers.  They
were/are go-getters.  What do you think… Coming up like that at a
young age, hustling, making bread, then get to the point when you get opportunities to
start making some real dough… C’mon.  Stop whining, and make it
    happen for yourselves.

      Herman Cain, is that you?

      • RedBlack

Funny that you, ladynamor, is the one person that replied.  It was your original post that inspired me to write my post.  And no, this is not the pizza man.  Clearly, you have my name.  Nothing to hide.  Again, don’t depend on no one to make it happen for you… Occupy Your Life.

  • off course what is wrong in it? however it is not just a t-shirt…its about what you feel about hip hop..
